Locked disk icon in sidebar & disk utility no help

I have read of others' problems with permissions. I too am having one now. The disk icon in the sidebar is locked. Get info on disk and click to unlock, verify password. The permissions section says custom access for each user type: .....(Me), (unknown), and everyone.
Then try to use Disk Utility. Will let me repair the disk with no problems found. But repair permissions is grayed out.
Per another thread tried to run Terminal command: chflags nouchg /Volumes/* but got permission denied.
What next? Thanks in advance.

Secondary disk. Startup disk had similar problem but was able to verify and repair permissions.
Ran command and response was:
Macintosh-2:~ paulgraham$ sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/"Help"

  • Cannot write or delete files from DVD+RW after erasing it through Disk Utility. Help.

Hello. I erased (completely not quickly) my 4.7 GB DVD+RW with the help of Disk Utility in which it was successful, it asked me to open Finder, DVD Player or Disk Utility, I chose Finder. Then I dragged a MP4 and burned it, it asked me to name the blank DVD+RW so I named it and then it successfully burned the file onto the DVD+RW, now when I try to burn a file again (as it is a RW) by dragging the file to the DVD+RW window the cursor shows a stop sign with it (the sign which is a circle and there is a diagonal line it it) and it denies to write files again, when I try to remove a file it doesn't do it as well. Please help.
P.S When I secondary click on the DVD+RW icon and click get info it says "Capacity : 4.7 GB" and "Available : 0 Bytes" even when the MP4 file is just 8.3 MB.
Computer: Macbook Pro 13-Inch (Non-Retina) Highest Configuration.
    Please Help.

    Hello Aditya's Apple,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you want to write again to a CD RW or DVD RW disc you will need to first erase it, and then start another burn process.  The only time you can burn multiple times to a disc without first deleting what is on it, is by multisession burning.  The following article explains more.

  • How do I use Disk Utility to help install Mountain Lion after many failed attempts?

I tried to install Mountain Lion from an App onto my MacBook.
First it said that my disk was damaged to i tried to repair it.
    Didn't work.
Then it said I didn't have enough room to install Mountain Lion.
Then I tried to restore Lion.
    Didn't work.
Then someone suggested I reset my PRAM.
Tried that, and now I am stuck.
I can't restore any of my backups from timeline.
I can't reinstall OSX because my drive is now locked.
And I don't know how to use Disk Utility to solve this problem!
Any suggestions welcome... I'm in way deeper than I understand and feel like anything I do is making this worse!

I gather that your computer is in a less than satisfactory state, so the process below will basically start you from scratch, but you shouldn't lose anything.
Okay, can you inspect the Time Machine Backups with the Finder? About two or so folders down you should start seeing your system files. Assuming all your files are present.
    Important^
You probably have an installation disk that came with your macBook.  Boot from that CD and install from the CD.
Run the verify disk utilites and repair utilities if necessary.
You may want to erase your disk from the CD's disk utility. This will erase your Hard Drive (make sure you do not erase your backups, as that would be very bad).
Once the installation is complete, run all system updates. Either look through your backup and find the Mountain lion installation app, or download it from the app store again.
    Run the ML installtion app.
Once everything is up and running, move all files and folders you want from your TM backups and you should be good to go.

  • External Hard drive will not appear on desktop or in disk utility.  HELP!?!

I moved my hard drive from upstairs to downstairs. there is no damage to the drive. Yet, now when I try to connect the drive, it powers up, but doesn't show an icon on the desktop, or an icon in the disk utility. The drive is still under warranty, but I don't want to send it back for a new one without all my info on it.
    a) How can I get this drive to be recognized?
    b) How can I get my files off of it before returning the drive?
    Already tried:
    • Disconnecting and reconnecting after powering off the computer.
    • Using a different USB cable
    • Using a different USB port
    • Connecting to a different Mac
    • Connecting to a PC laptop.

Actually, I did solve the problem myself, for free. To see if the adapter was giving enough power, I used a voltage meter. I found out the adapter I had it plugged into was actually giving TOO MUCH power. (Even though it was a 12 volt adapter, it was measuring 18 volts.) I figured out which adapter came with the drive and plugged it in using that one (also a 12 volt adapter, weird) and voilå - it appeared on the desk top as if nothing had changed. You can bet I'll be making DVD back ups tonight however, as the adapter kicking out too much voltage may have damaged the power board at some point, which may cause it to fail prematurely.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Locked disk. Please Help

I really got myself into a situation here. Following an online guide, I attempted to do a clean install of Lion. From the Lion install App I retrieved the Install.dmg file and copied it onto a USB thumb drive. I erased the main harddrive using the disk utility and rebooted. Upon reboot, I am immediately brought to a Mac OS X Utilities dialog box. There are 4 options, one of which is Reinstall Max OS X. When I attempt to install the OS, the disk drive is grayed out and reads as locked. I am not able to reinstall the OS!!
    Any help please!!
    Thank you

You should see if it does the same thing when you boot to the Restore partition (Command R at boot) and also try booting to the USB thumb drive by holding Option at the startup and choosing your external USB thumb drive.

  • My new ssd doesn't show up in Disk Utility please help

    Hi all,
I had a HDD failure in my mbp (2012). It completly crashed. I was able to make a copy of some files through Disk Utility. (Note: at this point i could only enter disk utility after start up not in the actual OS)
    So i bought a Kingston ssdNow v300.
What i did is the following:
Put an clean Mavericks install on a usb drive.
Put the ssd in the MBP
Pressed the option key to boot through the USB and the mbp didn't see the usb.
Booted up through command + R and the computer did see the usb however it did not see the new SSD.
Tried booting up again with command + R and it did see the SSD in the disk utility (after a long load time of recovering the disk data)
Now i knew i had the reformat the ssd in order to install OS X again.
However all the options are greyed out! I can't choose erase/reformat nothing.
Also i rebooted several times and sometimes the mbp didn;t see the ssd anymore... and sometimes it did.
Also if it does see the ssd in the disk utility and i close and re-open disk utility, the ssd in gone!
So sometimes it is recognized and sometimes it isn't.
I am not able to reformat it through an external exclosure or anything.
Also I tried deleting osx mavericks installer on the usb drive and put Os recovery assistant on it. (Which the computer did recognize)
But also this didn't work at all.
I really don't know what to do anymore.
I was hoping to be able to just simply reformat the ssd through disk utility but it doesn't give me this option.
    please help is appreciated!

You need to use external media in FCP if you're going to work with Motion. Or export the clips you need from FCP.

  • Repair my HD using disk utility, please help!

hi, i performed a "verify disk" in disk utility on my "MACINTOSH HD" and apparently "1 HFS volume needs to be repaired" however, the "repair disk" button is greyed out, how can i fix this HFS volume????
also if someone could tell me what a HFS volume is and if it is important, that would be great!
    Thanks!

    > however, the "repair disk" button is greyed out, how can i fix this HFS volume????
You need to restart using the system CD/DVD and run Disk Utility from there.
    1. Insert system CD/DVD into your PowerBook's optical drive
    2. Restart
    3. Press, and keep pressed, the 'C' key after you hear the startup chime
    4. Release the 'C' key when you see that the PB has restarted into OS X displaying a multilingual selection window
    5. Click through to the 'Installer' screen
    6. From the 'Utilities' menu, select 'Disk Utility'
    7. Select your PB's disk from the left hand panel
    8. Ensure the 'First Aid' tab on the main, right hand, panel is selected
    9. Click on 'Repair Disk'
NB. The "HFS volume" should be your PB's internal drive - and yes it is important (without it you have no drive).

  • Disk Utility/Repair Help Please...

    Hi
I have been having some issues with a Kernel Panic on my MBP. I am trying to solve them with the help of the X-Lab, but when I do the disk utility>repair permissions I get the following messages:
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Permissions repair complete
Does anyone think this may be a contributory factor. If it is unlikely that these are not to do with the Kernel Panic, any ideas as to what they are and what I should do.
    many thanks in advance

  • HT204347 Unable to Re-install mountain Lion after erasing with disk utility! help

I bought my new Macbook pro retina disply 13 inch last friday. played with it some time and try to restore using a time machine back up of my old Mac Air. It worked well but I didn't like it so I restarted and pressed Command + R to bring the restore utility and from there I used the Disk utility to erase my Disk and then after connecting to net I clicked reinstall Lion. First my machine was verified by Apple, then I entered my apple ID, then the mountain lion licence agreement came and i clicked agree and it started installing. Immediatley below the installation bar it showed 50 hrs remaining to finish installation. it was odd because I used to finish it within 2 hrs. Moreover the time appeared to increase from 50 to 51 and more. I waited all day without any use. it looked as if the disk has some write protection, the software is trying to install but unable to write.
What can i do now? I am now without a  OS in my mac.

  • Sold Feb 2008 MacBook to someone. I had Lion and had the drive erased, but now it's asking him to reinstall in disk utility. HELP!

So, I had a friend who is a computer expert erase my computer before I sold it to someone. I had Lion so advertised the laptop as running Lion. It's a Feb 2008 model Macbook.
He has since received it and says it is opening in disk utility asking for a username and password to install Lion. Please help! I'm not the best with computers, and unfortunately I am a student and can't afford much to fix this. I also can't find the original disks that came with the computer.
    Thanks!

Your friend didn't erase the hard drive completely so the mac is starting Into the recovery partition. The buyer needs the original discs, if he calls 1-800-MY-APPLE and provides them with the serial number they can ship him a set of original discs for a small fee. He needs to start up with disc one in by holding the C key and then through Disk Uility delete the revovery partition and reinstall the software. If he wants to upgrade to Lion he'll have to purchase that on his own.

    You've been given some misinformation.
RAM is the only thing in an iMac that IS user upgradeable/installable.
You cannot void the extended AppleCare installing your own RAM modules.
So, whoever told you this, has lied to you.
If you actually opened the iMac's face and attempted to do some other internal work, then yes, you would've voided the 3-year warranty.
But, opening the RAM access area and upgrading the RAM does NOT void the AppleCare warranty.
What type or manufacture of RAM was it?
Macs a very picky about the RAM that they need to use.
Here is the correct RAM specs for your model iMac.
    Maximum Memory
    16 GB
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Plus, whoever installed OS X 10.8 Mountain LIon on to this 2009 iMac should've done so.
OS X 10.8 is a download only OS and is forever tied to some other Apple ID other than your own Apple ID.
I do not use OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, but there should be a recovery partition that you can use to try and reinstall OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
Hopefully, someone with more experience with OS X 10.8 will be able to better help you.
If you need a set of OS X restore discs, then order OS X  10.6.3 Snow Leopard from Apple here.
    It is only $20 U.S.D.

Any theories as to way my OS crapped out suddenly? It was working fine Friday evening when I shut down for the weekend, turned on yesterday morning to have a heap of crap to deal with. Not a good way to start the work week, ya know?
It could be software, it could be hardware.
If it's software, then something got corrupted either before shutdown or on startup.
If it's hardware you may have a failing disk.
    Try running Apple Hardware Test:
    1. Disconnect all external devices from your Mac except the keyboard and mouse.
If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.
    2. Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with your Mac.
    3. Restart your Mac and hold down the D key as your Mac starts up.
    4. When the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen appears, select the language
    appropriate for your location.
    5. Press the Return key or click the right arrow button.
    6. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears (after about 45 seconds), follow
    the onscreen instructions.
    7. Apple Hardware Test displays an error code if it detects a problem. Make a note of the
error code before pursuing support options.
If hardware test does not mount or does not run bring the computer to Authorized Apple Repair.
Unfortunately AHT doesn't do the most through job :-/
I believe DriveGenius has a free Surface Scan you can use as demo, which would be a better indicator.

  • Disk Utility doesn't play on PCs

I recently used disk Utility to burn PDF files and movie files. The files were such that they would open on a PC normally if sent in an email or on a webpage. However, when I gave the disk to my friend, it appeared as a blank disk when she used it in her PC. However, when she tried another Mac, all the files were there. Is this common of the Disk Utility feature? Is there a way to burn the disk with disk utility in order to have the files appear on both a PC and Mac, or do you need something like Toast to burn those sort of files?
    Thank you.

When you create a blank disc image file in Disk Utility a dialog appears. A drop down menu labeled Partitions will be in the dialog. Choose the option for CD/DVD with ISO data.
From the Finder just insert a blank disc in the optical drive. A dialog will appear asking what you want to do. Select the option to mount on the Desktop. You can then copy files to the mounted disc. After all the files have been copied select the disc icon and select Burn Disk from the File menu.
If you use the Mac Help selection from the Finder's Help menu you can locate help on burning CD/DVDs. You will find similar help from Disk Utility's Help menu on using DU to burn CD/DVDs.
