Locked External Drives, Please Help!!!!

A few weeks ago I had to reformat our new external studio hard drives because they used the GUID formating from the factory and since I have Mac OSX 10.5/PowerMac G5 for Pro Tools they had to be reformatted to Apple Partition Mapping. Put a former session on it when it was done and opened PT. Session came up and ran fine, recorded fine, etc. This past week we got a DVD from one of our clients with the PT sessions we will be working on for them and dragged all the file to their client folder on one of the new drives. Now we can't record to, change, edit or unlock ANYTHING on these hard drive. I found out by checking the Workspace Browser in PT, the drives are set to "P" play only, tried to change to "R" record and that's when I get the message that the drives where locked and how I first was informed of this whole mess. From there I went to "Get Info" for the drives and all the sharing and permission info is grayed out. The studio account IS the administrator for the computer so we should have full access and privileges. I can't get a straight answer to figure out the procedure to COMPLETELY unlock the hard drives and all the files on them. I also want to know how to prevent this from ever happening again. Can anyone here help me?

  • Disk Images and External Drives - PLEASE HELP

    Hi all,
I've got to a point where i can't afford to keep buying expensive drives to work form with Final Cut Pro X so decided to just work from several high spec drives and then back them up on other cheaper drives, reformat the high spec ones and start again.
Not really understanding how disk imaging works I hoped I could carbon copy mountable and read and writeable drives (in this case a thunderbolt lace SSD)  on to a cheaper mass storage, wipe it and start again. I hoped it would then appear on the drives top level just as the drive appears on my desktop, and that I could access it if needed or port it back to a single drive at a later date? Is this possible? Can anyone help? So far everything I've tried has failed.
One thought I did have was to create several partitions on the cheaper mass drive and duplicate it on to there? But I can't find any help or instruction for this online and need to make sure its write before I go deleting old projects.
Attached are a picture of what I have (the disk image file) and what I was hoping to create (a mountable replica of a working drive on an external HD)
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Robin

You can research the terms disk image and back up for several hours. That might not help.
None of the back up routines I am aware for for video and large media files use any compression or bundling systems like .dmg. I think your best bet is to make one-to-one copies of your files to your cheap drives. If you need the older projects, you copy them back to your working drives. That's pretty much how it's always been unless you are have a nice NAS RAID with mirroring to another rack of drives.
The problem with cheap mass storage is no that it's unreliable. It's just not QUITE as reliable as more expensive systems. Having a copy of your work on a disk that might or is likely to fail is almost the same as not having a backup at all. but there is a point of diminishing returns for all of us in this business. This trend toward 4k and 8k, and FCPX's inability to manage media efficiently, means we all must add TB of storage for every project. A friend of mine includes a couple of TB drives in his fees. The client pays for and gets the drives.

  • How to point Itunes to a new location where music is stored Cannot locate music now it is on an external drive PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Background Info
i have recently got rid of my Windows machine an am now using my MacBook as my main machine
On the old windows Desktop   i had my music set up as follows
    Itunes libary information:
    C:\Documents and settings\Lee Robinson\My Documents\My Music\
all of the Music files were stored on the PC as follows
    G:\Music\My Music
Before i got rid of the machine i backed up all of my music and my iTunes libary files as follows to a External USB Harddrive that is now connected to my mac
    Music Located @
    /Volumes/AFRO-PORT/My Music
the iTunes Libary is located at the following
    /Volumes/AFRO-PORT/My Music/iTunes
what i then did was to copy  my itunes libary files at  /Volumes/AFRO-PORT/My Music/iTunes  to my local Mac machine .....
    /Users/Afroboy/Music
    Problem
Now when i fire up Itunes, i have all my playlists, ratings abum art etc...... but the problem i have is that itunes cannot locate any of the files. I guess that this is because my entire libary is still pointing to
G:\Music\My Music -  as on my old windows PC
How do i tell itunes that this is no longer where i keep my music and for the actual MP3 files itself it needs to look at the following path
    /Volumes/AFRO-PORT/My Music
... all file structures within these 2 file directories remain the same
I would really appreciate the heklp-  my music collection is quite big and i dont want to loose any of the work i have done building it up over the past 5 years
    Cheers
    LR

Hi  - thanks for the response
yes thats right, i have always kept my itunes folder and the directory containing all of my actual media seperate
all of the Music files were stored on the PC as follows:
    G:\Music\My Music
    Itunes libary information:
    C:\Documents and settings\Lee Robinson\My Documents\My Music\
Your quite right, doing the above method that i have, turns it really messy when you  when you try to move your entire collection. i saw this article earlier today
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
..........wish i followed it before hand
The only Semi work arond i have found is to go to File> Add libary.... and brows to what is now my new external drive with all my music on  /Volumes/AFRO-PORT/My Music/ .
Once the import was complete it effectivly dupicated my entire libary -  So i then went to
File > Display Duplicates to show duplicate items, sorted by date and removed all the duplicate items
.... So far seems to have worked ok however i have lost my play lists, their all on my iPod anyway so all seems fine now
As you said iTunes wants you to do thinngs in a certian way and it certianly makes you pay if you dont. So now my question is, so i dont have this problem in the future..... do i
    A) Manually move all of my Music files to my iTunes Liabry and have everything in one folder (If i move manually where do i need to copy all my files to?)
    B) Start from Scratch and let iTunes do it, so i have everything on the external disk

I have macbook pro 13" I want to know how to copy files from my mac to the external Toshiba Hard Drive. I can't even delete files from my external hard drive. please help me my macbook HD is almost full and I have to copy my images to the Toshiba HD

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
    Ciao.

Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!
The WD My Passport, I purchased back in early December 2013 & I just used it the other day after I updated my Macbook... & of course it says in the online manual it works for Mac Lion, Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard but not this new Maverick update. Is there anything I can do?

I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on some Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

You apparently aren't listening or don't understand English well enough to understand the responses you're getting.
An unlocked iPhone will remain unlocked. Updating a legitimately unlocked phone does NOT affect the locked/unlocked status.
It will only lock IF the phone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock it.

  • Lost write privileges to external USB hard drive- please help!

    Hi,
I've got an external Western Digital 250GB USB hard drive that has been chugging along just fine until about a month ago, when somehow I seemed to have lost write privileges to the top level directory. I"m not sure if this happened when I installed an Mac OS update, or what, as I use the drive as backup and didn't notice it for a while.
The drive appears in the sidebar with a tiny lock icon, and when I try to copy a file from my internal HD to the external (top level directory, or drag the items right onto the icon), the following things happen:
Dialog box says "The item "foo" cannot be moved because "External HD" cannot be modified", with an authenticate button, which I then click.
After I authenticate, I get the error msg "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."
But I *CAN** copy files directly into a folder that already exists on the external drive, but I cannot create new folders in the top level directory.
I have tried the following, to no avail:
    1) "get info" on the external drive, checkign the permissions. In the Ownership and Permissions section, it says "You can Read & Write", and under details:
Owner: my account (dimmed) and access level is "read & write".
Group: my account (dimmed) Access: Read only
    Others: No access
Ignore ownership on this volume (unchecked).
The fact that my account was named both as owner and group seemed odd, since in Group the access was "read only". I clicked on the little lock icon next to Owner, authenticated, and was allowed to change the Group settings. I changed the Group access to "read & Write", but it's not "sticking" -- when I close teh details field and reopen it, or close the get info window and reopen, the Group access settings go back to "read only".
    2) I've also, of course, tried repairing permissions on my internal startup drive, which did not help the matter. Also in Disk Utility, I verified/repaired the offendin external USB drive (no problems), Verify/Repair permissions were dimmed for this drive (I assume becuase it doesn't have MacOS X installed on it?)
    3) Searched the forums, Western Digital support, etc. and I cannot seem to figure out what has gone wrong.
    4) When I connect the drive to another computer (my iBook) the situation is the same. Also, when I create a new admin user account and try to access the drive from that account, I still cannot write to the drive.
Thanks, I appreciate any tips or pointers.

The drive appears in the sidebar with a tiny lock icon, and when I try to copy a file from my internal HD to the external (top level directory, or drag the items right onto the icon), the following things happen:
Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and enter the following:
    chflags nouchg
followed by a space; next, drag the disk into the Terminal window and press Enter. The lock should now be gone.
The fact that my account was named both as owner and group seemed odd, since in Group the access was "read only".
Recent versions of Mac OS X create a group with the same name whenever you create an account from the Setup Assistant or System Preferences. The Group permissions don't apply in this case.
I changed the Group access to "read & Write", but it's not "sticking" -- when I close teh details field and reopen it, or close the get info window and reopen, the Group access settings go back to "read only".
Did you get an error message after doing this?
Verify/Repair permissions were dimmed for this drive (I assume becuase it doesn't have MacOS X installed on it?)
That is correct. The Repair Permissions mechanism uses data from the /Library/Receipts/ folder on a disk to function, and this data is only present on disks which have Mac OS X installed.

  • Problem running Itunes from external hard drive- Please Help!

So, last night I transferred my entire music folder over to an external hard drive. It copied all the files and I then proceeded to tell itunes where my new music folder was located. The problem I ran into was when I actually deleted the music files from my internal hard drive my library won't automatically find the files. When I click on a song it comes up with an error message saying, "original file cannot be found, would you like to locate file?". If I tell it yes, I can then manually tell it where the file is, and it will play. I'm really hoping there is an easier way around this issue because going in and doing this for every song in my library would take years. Should I clear out the library and then drag it from the external hard drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.
    Sean

I am experiencing a similar problem. I already had all my files on an external drive, where I had transfered them a few months back, and everything was working fine. I have now moved them, again, to a larger external drive, did everything the same, but now receive the message "original file cannot be found, would you like to locate file?" I was advised to use the "add to library" button under "FILE" in the menu bar and all the music was finally imported into iTunes, but the problem now is that the new data on the music files is missing all the metadata, and I am still stuck with all the original files with the "!" in front of each file that is going to have to be manually deleted one file at a time, all 30,000 of them. I would like a way to start over and get it right the first time. Anyone have any solutions? I have found a program, "Super Remove Dead Tracks" which should solve the problem of eliminating the "!" tracks, but so too all the metadata. Ideally I'd like to be able to locate the original files with all the attached metadata and get back to where I was 24 hours ago.

  • Time Machine has locked my external drive. HELP

Time Machine hosed me again. After several unsuccessful attempts to backup on my PowerMac G5 dual 2.33 Ghz, I was able to complete my first full backup to an external 2 gig DROBO (USB 2.0 interface). It took 20 hours to do 180 gigs.
Now I have just discovered that Time Machine has made that external drive READ-ONLY! I cannot write to the drive and neither can Time Machine.
Does anybody know what is up and how to fix this short of using root UNIX shell which terrifies me. I just want to take it off and cut my losses, but the drive also has a ton of music on it that iTunes uses.

Okay Jeffery, I think I've found the solution, especially if you are seeing the "Unknown" user in your Get Info window's Sharing & Permissions setting for your drobo.
I had written earlier about my work-around for getting my drobo to work right after getting the "read-only" error from Time Machine. But unfortunately it was a temporary and temperamental fix. There were times then I had to eject the disk and launch Disk Utility to run a repair on the disk which would take more than half an hour on my drobo. But all the while my permissions had this "Unknown" user. Well I decided to "Go UNIX" and see if I could fix this problem once and for all.
I opened up Terminal and typed "*ls -la /Volumes*". This gives me a directory listing of my mounted drive volumes. I noticed that all of my drives, internal, external, USB and FireWire, all had "root" as the user and "admin" as the group, _EXCEPT for my drobo!_ So I forced it to conform by changing it manually by typing "*sudo chown root:admin /Volumes/Drobo\ Backup\ HD/*".
sudo = temporarily enables root mode by asking for your password before executing.
    chown = changes ownership to...
root:admin = "root" is the user and "admin" is the group.
*/Volumes/Drobo\ Backup\ HD/* = My drobo drive is named "*Drobo Backup HD*", but UNIX sees spaces as command separators, so you have to use the "\ " to signify spaces within a name.
After doing this over a week ago, _I have not had any other problems_ with using my drobo as a backup drive. It has never come up with the "read-only" error in Time Machine, the Sharing & Permissions setting do not have any "Unknown" users or groups, I don't even need to wait for my drobo before logging in like I did in the past. I just boot my Mac and everything with my drobo and Time Machine just works... No problems!
It seems to be permanently fixed for me, so if you are willing to try this solution, I'm sure it would work for you. If UNIX terrifies you too much, and you do not trust yourself editing the commands above, let me know the name of your drobo drive on your desktop and I will post a message with the EXACT UNIX commands customized for just for you, so all you have to do is copy and paste them into your Terminal window to do it. But like I said, I've done this over a week ago and I not had one single problem.

  • This is Bad - Locked External Drives

Adobe Photoshop CS3 would not open RAW files so I tried to update. The updater said I had to have Admin permission to use it. I entered my Admin password and it repeated the dialog endlessly asking the same. I repaired permissions, Then checked permissions using <get info> from the root path all the way to the updater application and it was all set to ME <read and write>. Tried to uninstall CS3 Suite, using their utility, for reinstall with the same results. To make a long story short things went downhill rapidly. I've been using Apple since 1994 and this is the most disturbing and bizarre thing that has ever happened to me. All of my external Firewire disks were locked! The <Get Info> dialog shows every user access status as "custom". I am listed but I cannot change the access to <read and write> or anything else. I can't change any of the other users status, including Admin or System, delete or add users, or make any changes at all after unlocking using my valid password. First I did an Archive and Install and now a Erase and Install. The disk status remains the same. These drives have never given me any problem whatsoever. I hoped a reinstall might fix the problem. Apparently when the system went down it locked these drives. Why or how, don't have a clue.
One is an Archive and one is my Backup. I desperately need the data on these drives. I desperately need to unlock these drives. Is there any way to simply unlock the drives?
    Someone please help...

I've got half a dozen OWC Mercury type drive cases. One thing I noticed after 10.5.4 is that some that I had made backup clones now had the "Ignore Ownership" flag set to on - something that I always check and which would prevent a proper backup or restore and wouldn't allow repair permissions.
So in some way, 10.5.4 did do "something" to those FW drives, but not sure how or why the ownership would be changed. And of course I had to unlock to turn Ignore Ownership off.
I wonder if Batchmod would help? Leopard Cache Cleaner -> Maintain has "Repair Home Folder" and "Home Folder ACL" which might get your boot drive and home folder working normal.

  • My time Machine keeps saying, "Time Machine could not complete the backup. This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74 GB but only 289.80 are available." I have already excluded files. I have a 1tb external drive. HELP!!!

For over two weeks now I have been frustated and not having my TIme Machine back up to my 1tb external drive. I dont understand why now its a problem.  It keeps saying
"This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74GB but only 289.80GB are avialable.  Time Machine needs work space on the bakup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a large backup disk or make the bakup smaller by excluding files." So I have already excluded almost all of my files, and even deleted the backup disk yet, that quote still keeps popping up. I am truly at a wall with this. I have a Mac OS X version 10.7.5. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE????

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

  • Lock cell formula Please Help

    Hello
I have been setting up prices for a new business in the latest version of numbers. I was having no luck on iCloud making a formula that linked sheets by clicking cells I had to put each one in individually. I then downloaded it to my macbook and got that to work (any help there would be great but not essential) I managed to do my formulas fine once it was on my hard drive but there is one formula which is a combination of 2 sheets. The formula works fine which is in sheet 2. However, in sheet 1 everything is A-Z and if the formula for example is regarding cel B2, if i insert a new row and that cell then becomes C2 my formula is messed up. I have tried using the preserve tick boxes and manually insert the $ but it is not locking it. I want the cell to know that if I move cell B2 anywhere it still keeps that information.
    Here is the actual formula
    =SUM($Price $'Sugar)'÷$Price Per $'Sugar')×$B$6
    Price = cell B2 in Sheet 1
    Price per = B2 in sheet 2
I have tried with and without $
Please help I am trying to get a business plan together and the last thing I want is to change something without realising it has altered the formula.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Egor,
It would be clearer if you turned off "Use header names as labels". Even so each cell needs a column and a row designation.
    Price = cell B2 in Sheet 1,  Price per = B2 in sheet 2
    These statements cannot be true.
That said, there are some things that are clear.
If you are dividing one value by another you do not need the SUM() function. As far as I can tell you are not adding anything.
There is an extra ")" in your formula.
Whats with the quotes around 'Sugar'?
What does your formula look like without the "Use header names as labels" checked?

  • HP dv4t not detecting hard drive, please help!

Hello, its been just a little over a year since I've bought my HP dvt, and of course the problems start as soon as my warranty has ended.. It's been working fairly fine most of the year, and then just all of a sudden while not even doing anything of importance on computer last week I got a blue screen error..
Ever since then I have had so much problems. At first it just started out with closing the screen and reopening it crashed the laptop in a couple minutes..
The main problem now is, it just does not detect the hard drive when booting up! Sometimes (rarely) it does though.. I thought it was a windows problem, so I did fresh clean install of Windows 7 and reformatted the hard drive. Then I ran CHKDSK and it did it stuff and said volume clean at the end.. It worked perfectly for a couple of hours, was able to close screen and open with no problems. I downloaded "Hard drive sentinel" to monitor my hdd health, and it said 90% which is apparently excellent. Yet as I was installing adobe reader, it crashed, got the blue screen of death and has not been able to boot up since
Can anyone tell what is the problem with it? Anyone else have similar problem? I've tried to reformat again with CD but it doesnt even recognize any drive to install on..
Important thing to note is that, in the BIOS screen when i run the HARD DISK TEST, it does recognize it! So i dont understand why it doesn't load the operating system or cant see the hard drive anywhere else!!
What is at fault even? Is the motherboard dead? Althought the bios screen loads fine so does that mean its OK? Is it the hard drive? CHKDSK and the hdd health monitor thing said it was ok right before the crashes..
Please help, I have my first computer science lab in like 2 days with my laptop breaking just a couple days before it with barely any money left to buy a new laptop

    "computer always freezes at 56%"
Time to replace your Hard Drive. BACK UP NOW!!!
This will be the 3rd HD in a new HP HDX 18 for me (6 months old).
Open up the HD bay and take a look at the model of the HD.
If it is a SEAGATE MOMENTUS 7200.4  they are known to fail in as little as 1 month from install, and do not last more than 6 months.
Google the brand and you will see that most people are reccomending that you remove the SEAGATE product ASAP (data recovery is next to impossible) and replace it with something else.
I had just finished setting up the PC as I wanted it, OS, programs / Bios, software upgrades, then without warning the 2nd HD went.
I lost EVERYTHING in my C drive, was just preparing to do a full BU and Mirror Image after deleting both from my D and External Drive.
HP is replacing one piece of crap with another, I will be shopping for a different brand for the C drive after the laptop comes back from repair.
There seems to be no end to this BS with SEAGATE drives.
    DO A FULL BU NOW!!!

  • Somehow lock my ipod, please help

It all started when I was taking a walk the other day and I don't have a holder for it so I put it in the hold position so that the volume wouldn't go all over the place in my pocket. I try to press the button and nothing happen and when I try to switch it back to unhold postion, I notice a pad lock symbol on my ipod on the left top corner. when i plug it to my computer the time is corsponding yet the pad lock is still there, try the 5 Rs still nothing, even try to restore it, but when it get the language screen on the ipod I can't click to english, the button won't work then it fade out, yet i still see the pad lock. plus everytime I plug my ipod to my computer, it will charge but I can't connect to the internet as it is charging, i ahve to wait till it's done and reset my computer to get to the internet. please anybody please help

I assume you have tried everything here?
    iPod: Cannot restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439
It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.
