Locked iPhone loses signal?

I have a password protected iphone, and everytime I'm at my house and it goes idle and locks I lose service. This causes me to miss calls, get text messages hours after they were sent, etc.
However, if I'm sitting down with it unlocked doing something on it, service is restored.
Anyone know why this would happen?
This is for an iPhone 3G that's about 5 months old.

That's interesting, it seems like the when it is plugged in it is helping the signal level just enough to stay connected.
All Smartphone, Ipad and tablets in general have to make the antenna's fit into a compromised environment to start with.
When we set up long range WiFi systems we have to use specialized high gain dedicated antenna's to get outside of the devices.
If your interested have a read up on how S/N (Signal to Noise) ratio's work on RF systems and you quickly find out how compromised our devices are right out of the box. It's the price we pay to have it all hidden in a pretty case
Cheers!

  • Why does my iphone lose signal since upgrading to ios7

Since I upgraded to ios7, my iphone 5 constantly loses signal.  It does so just about every 10-15 minutes.  I have tried reseting my network settings, I switch to airplane mode, I do a hard reset.  And nothing works.  Prior to upgrading I never had this problem, now its constant.  I am going to try to get a new sim card, but since this only started when I upgraded (almost the exact moment), I dont see that fixing it.  I have to try to resend almost every text message, and safari pages never load. I have even been trying for days to post this question, but finally gave up and used my computer.  I would really appreciate any help

    Perfect.
With a iPhone keyboard lag since installed iOS7,

  • Iphone loses signal then cannot refind it.

    Hello,
If my iphone loses its signal for any reason it cannot then refind it, unless I turn it off and then on again. This happens if I use airplane mode, or if I pass through a no-signal area (this happens frequently, unfortunately, I live in a remote place), or sometimes even if there is a brief signal interruption.
Obviously turning off and on is no great hardship, but if I don't notice then I miss calls when the signal is absent.
Is this some simple probelm to solve, or is it a tricky one? Anyone else had anything similar?

Hooray! Seems to be sorted by 5.1

I believe that a software upgrade (if you search these forums) should help you in any case.

  • Why My iPhone loses signal when I had signal in the same place?

My iPhone 4S is locked with a Mexican company named "Telcel" and sometimes when I don't use the carrier network, it lose the signal for two minutes (but twice I had an emergency and I don't had signal). I tried to switch between 2G to 3G and the problem is solved… for a few hours. What's happening?

    Hey thersjoel,
The passkey should be in the documentation for the devices:
Bluetooth headset: Refer to the documentation for the headset to determine the passkey.

  • IPhone loses signal for several minutes?

I had AT&T before I got my iPhone and I know of certain areas around my neighborhood where the signal is weak. My old phone would sometimes drop a call in those areas, but seconds later, the signal meter would start to refill as I drove into a stronger signal area. With my iPhone, it completely loses the signal and displays "No Service" in the upper left of the screen. However, even as I pass into an area that I know has a better signal, it will stay on "No Service" for about 2-4 minutes before it finally finds the signal again! Anyone else notice this?

More information on my reception problems. I am now absolutely convinced that it is a either a tower problem or a SIM problem - AT&T problem not strictly iPhone. I spent several hours today swapping SIM cards around between the iPhone, Nokia N95 and Nokia E61. In all cases I did the testing in exactly the same location within our house. Here are the results:
iPhone: Signal strength varies from No Service to full bars at this single location in a random, completely unpredictable way. While on a call signal strength was 4 bars and during the conversation dropped to No Service and call dropped. Later my wife called and was sent immediately to voice mail. She then called me on the landline and I checked the signal and it showed No Service. When it goes to No Service it sometimes takes a few minutes to re-acquire just like others have reported here.
N95 with iPhone SIM card: Signal strength varies from one bar to full bars in a random, completely unpredictable way. But never actually lost service. I tried several Edge data connections and while slow when signal was low none failed. I do not remember seeing this random fluctuation in signal on the N95 before with my old (pre iPhone) Cingular SIM card but perhaps it was there and since it was still usable I just didn't notice.
E61 with iPhone SIM card: Pretty much the same behavior as N95 except no full bar signal strength showed. Completely usable.
I realize that the iPhone will probably never get as good reception as the Nokias but I think if it would quit the signal strength variation or tower hopping or what ever it is doing it would be usable at even 1-3 bars if the signal remained steady.
As another point of information in case Cingular and T-Mobile are sharing towers at my location, I returned my T-Mobile SIM card to my N95 and tested it in the same location as before and it showed a consistent full bars with no variation and perfect operation.
Unless something good happens to solve this problem soon, I think that when I find a reliable method or service that will unlock the iPhone I am going to do it and go with T-Mobile. AT&T is not ready for dependable operation at my location with the iPhone.

  • IPhone loses signal and dosen't get it back

This problem started maybe 2 weeks ago and nothing has seemed to fix it. In my daily moving around there are many areas where I know I get no signal. At work, in my basement, some other areas of the city, and various other small locations. But it would generally always get the signal back pretty quick when I moved outside of my work buiding or am not in the basement of my house.
Recently though when I move to get a signal nothing happens. I have left it to sit for long periords of time where I know there is full signal and it never get the signal back. I go outside and still nothing. The only method that works is for me to turn it off and then turn it back on.
So far these methods have done nothing to help or solve the problem.
    -Restarting
-Switching to Air Plane mode and then back off
    -Restore
-Turning off edge and then back on
The only thing that works everytime is for me to turn the phone off and then back on. This is a total pain in the *** to have to do all the time. Is there anything else I should try or is it time to call apple?

Yea that is what I figured I would do. Although my iphone is now ~5 months old so will they still replace it? I thought they would only replace them if you were within the 14 day period, and they would only fix it (or attempt to fix) if past that. I guess if there is nothing they can do to fix it then it will get replaced?

  • My iPhone 4 still seems to lose signal even though its at the latest OS?

As you can see from the title the Iphone loses signal whenever the antenna is covered. This problem I thought was resolved with 4.0.1 update? I am now at 4.3.3 and having only gotten the iPhone a week ago it is a big problem. Any help?

No, the phone quite clearly doesnt work fine, if i am on the phone to somebody I lose connection. That doesnt sound fine to me. And theres only one option and that is to spend ANOTHER £30. Could it not be that the antenna isnt set properly? I know apple was giving away free bumpers for a while but thats over now. That suggests I dont need a bumper to fix the phone as it was meant to be a software problem. This hasnt been fixed so im wondering if it could have something to do with the manufacturing.

Battery problem, anntena or motherboard? pleas help.

it could be a motherboard problem. Last month I spilled liquid on to my iphone and since I didn't have warranty for it I had to take it to a "phone doctor". He fixed it but mentioned that motherboard is working fine but he can not say for sure for how long it will last, and that I may experience some wierd problems. I'm having this exact problem the day I got my iphone back.
Well no longer but the solution still seems wierd. I turned on the "location services" because I saw in the "system services" screen that "cell network search" was turned on. I figured if I don't screw with location services, it would be okay. So, after three hours, I terminated the sleep in 10-20-30 minutes and 1 hour intervals, it seems I no longer have the problem but I'm going to sleep over it to be sure. Also make sure to turn on the "auto" option on the "carrier" menu.
I will post the outcome if I don't forget about this page.

Here are some observations and a suggestion.
    1)  I mentioned before, that the number of views of this discussion forum is fast approaching 100,000.  I suppose relative to all iPhones sold that is not a great percentage, but 100,000 still sounds pretty impressive to me.  Consider also that many people probably have this same Sim problem and are not viewing this discussion forum because thay do not know it exists.  How many people are REALLY experiencing this problem?  Who knows.  But I suspect it is more that 100,000.
    2)  To the best of my knowledge, Apple does not consult these forums as a guide to awareness of product performance.  It may be company policy, but most of the time when I speak to an Apple employee they seem remarkably unaware of the "Top Stories" in the Apple Discussion Forum.  This, despite the fact that my personal experience with customer service at Apple is excellent.  So, as much as we of this discussion forum are confident SOMEONE important at Apple is reading all our posts and taking them to heart...I am not so sure.
    3)  I have been told over and over that the best way to gain Apple's attention regarding a problem is to post a comment on their Feedback Site.  One comment about a problem is pretty worthless.  100,000 comments on the same issue, I'm guessing, will really get their attention.
    4)  Some folks have mentioned a recall to address this problem.  Although such a thing is always a possibility, I don't see it happening.  Why?  When the brakes on a Toyota don't work, or that Toyata starts to accelerate without driver intention...well, that involves human life and the stakes are quite high.  For many reasons you would see the automotive industry eventually be forced into a recall program under such a situation.  But, a phone APPEARS to not nearly be such a life and death device.  Or is it?  My daughter's iPhone 4S developed a "SIM FAILURE" on the same day her car broke down in the middle of the very rural area we live at around 10:00 pm.  She is 17 years old and was coming home from high school play practice.  You can imagine the anxiety I and her mother felt when she did not arrive home on time.  She eventually walked about a quarter mile to a house of a stranger and had to ask to use their phone to call us.  Now, I am not saying that strangers where I live are not to be trusted.  But, in addition to being worried out of my mind, I was not happy that an inoperative iPhone 4S caused my daughter to be put in this situation.  My biggest concern now is...when will my daughter's iPhone become inoperative again due to SIM FAILURE?
    5)  The more folks in this discussion forum who post a comment about this issue in Apple's feedback site the more pressing this issue is going to be perceived by Apple.  So, I like others, encourage all of you to do so.  If this seems like a lot of effort, I offer you these few sentences below that you could just copy and paste into the feedback site.
The link to feedback site is:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Feel free to use copy/amend/whatever the following as you wish:
    Dear Apple,
I wish to register a strong concern about my iPhone's unpredictable inoperability due to failures somehow associated with it's SIM technology.  For me, I do not consider this just a significant lack of convenience, but a significant safety issue.  Should I need my phone in an emergency situation where it is experiencing  a SIM FAILURE, I believe the iPhone will have put me at risk.  I would ask you to please give fixing this problem your greatest priority and effort.
    Sincerely, XXXX

Since my iPhone 5C is pretty much the same as the iPhone 5, I am also experiencing this signal? Would we be able to get the Apple Genius to take a look at it once out of Apple Care? This is totally the software side.
Reset Network Setting. Restoring the phone. Using a new sim card. NOTHING AT ALL. I only get signal now once I am outdoor. Very depressing.
