Locked iTunes Library file

Suddenly today I can not access iTunes. I get a message saying +"The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."+
I'm totally bewildered and don't know what to do. Advice will be so very, very welcome. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps the version of iTunes was upgraded inadvertently. The computer I'm having a problem with is an iMac running on OS 10.3.0.
I'm just hoping this will be easily resolved and I haven't lost my library.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
Linda

copied this from another post hope it helps you, i am having the same issue now:
You need to check and see that you have both Read AND Write permission on the iTunes Music folder AND on all folders within it. Log in to the account where the library resides and navigate to the music folder thru Finder. Get Info and check your permissions. To change them, you may need to input the Admin password. Also, and very important, make sure that Read and Write permission is applied to ALL enclosed folders. (Check this under details.) Set your pemissions to allow you Read/Write permissions to the iTunes folder (\Music\iTunes\)and everything in that folder.
I had copied over my entire iTunes folder. This included the following:
iTunes Library
iTunes Library Extras.itdb
iTunes Library Genius.itdb
iTunes Music Library.xml
Because they were set to default to the admin acct, when they copied over they retained the admin only read/write access.
I had originally only checked the iTunes Music Library.xml file for access issues.
Thank you for your help!!!

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

    Huh?
Your iTunes library is on your home computer.   That is strictly under control of someone in your house.
Your iTunes account, which can be accessed with your Apple ID and password can be disabled by Apple.    Is this what you mean?

  • ITunes Library File Locked

    Hi,
Have been using iTunes 10.5 on my WinXP machine - no problems.  During a movie download tonight, iTunes crashed.  Tried to reopen and got the infamous error "iTunes Library file locked or on a locked disk..."  Tried several remedies listed.
Verified that MyMusic folder and contents are not READ ONLY.  I am unable to rename, edit, or move the file...she's locked up tight.
Tried repairing the Windows Registry assignment using the Tweak UI utility discussed in another thread.  No joy.
Tried starting iTunes from another account on the PC - iTunes boots fine.
Pulling my hair out (what little is left)...Any ideas out there ???
    HELP !

Fixed.  For those using WinXP...Here's what I had to do:
It was a file properties thing as mentioned in other posts, but to change the file properties...
    1.  Boot Windows in SAFE MODE by holding F8 down during bootup
    2.  Log on as Administrator
    3.  Navigate to the iTunes Libary.itl file (My Music/iTunes)
    4.  Right Click and pull up the file properties
    5.  Under Security, re-add the user account to the file permissions
    6.  Then change file permissions to FULL (Read/Write/Edit...)
    7.  Reboot & Viola !
Once you unlock the write protected status (which got defaulted to the Adminstrator account), iTunes opens just fine.

  • Error: iTunes Library file locked, or no permission

After fighting with what I'm afraid is a toasted iPod (another story), iTunes hung to the point that even Force Quit took several tries to kill it. Upon restart and attempting to re-open iTunes, I'm getting an error message that says "The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file". Not true, obviously.
    Any suggestions?

The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk?

I have my iTunes library on an Netgear NAS.  I have seen this happen when iTunes is Force Quit or the system crashes and the machine restarts, trying to start iTunes again.  The following procedure clears the problem for me...
Unmount the volume containing the iTunes library.
restart the NAS (or machine hosting the remote volume).
Remount the volumes containing the iTunes library.
    restart iTunes.
iTunes will start and popup a dialog indicating it is checking the library.
    iTunes start is successful.
This is possibly due to inconsistencies between AFP or SMB implementations of the two devices (your Mac's OS and the remote device's firmware or OS), or it could just be a flaw in the AFP or SMB protocols.
If your iTunes library is on an NAS or network volume this may work for you.

  • "iTunes library file is locked" message

When I try opening iTunes, I get the message:
"iTunes library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file" message. This is a new thing - I've been using iTunes fine since buying the mac, 18 months ago. Can anybody help?
    Many thanks
    SeanoSean

Dear M, thanks so much for your advice on my query. It worked briefly when I tried it the first of your two suggested ways, but then the 'file is locked' message came back, so I tried your next suggestion of copying an alias of itunes icon onto the desktop etc. Lo and behold it worked (at least, so far). Now I've just got to find out why my ipod isn't charging from the dock (in fact, it drains it!) So I'll go and put that on the board now...
    A big thanks once again

  • ITunes library file .itl is locked

I just got a new PC running Windows 7.  After retoring my music library from Carbonite I now receive the message, "The iTunes library file .itl is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file" any time I try to open iTunes.  Any idea how to fix this?  Thanks!

  • Empty iTunes library and locked iTunes Library.itl file

    Hi everyone,
A few days ago, when I plugged my iPod nano into my PC, it wouldn't sync and my computer automatically ejected the iPod. I didn't think much of it at first, because that had happened before, without any future problems. And, besides that, I could still listen to all of my music through iTunes.
The next day, however, I opened iTunes and my whole library was empty. I tried going over the basics (opening iTunes with shift key held down, trying a few different .itl files; reinstalling iTunes)
I then looked for answers online, but no luck so far. One approach that helped many people (unticking the read-only box for the iTunes folder) did give me some more answers, but did not solve the problem. I found out that the iTunes folder had the read-only box ticked, so I tried unticking it. It went fine for a few seconds, but in the process of making every file and folder non-read-only, I got a message saying iTunes Library.itl was a locked file and that I could not access it.
When I examined the .itl file more closely, I found out that the read-only box was not ticked for that particular file, even though I could not move/delete/cut/copy+past it. The archiving option, however, was ticked (I was told that option should not be on). I cannot untick it, for the file is locked.
When I double-click the file iTunes launches normally, but my library is still empty.
Other things I've tried to retrieve my library:
    - I downloaded 'unlocker', but that did not solve anything.
    - I uninstalled my last.fm scrobbler.
    - I tried making a new library, then imported the .xml file from my old library, but the library stayed empty.
    - I used AVG to scan my computer for malware.
I hope someone can help me fix this, because having to import all of my music all over again is going to be quite a drag!
    Thanks in advance.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
If you're still having problems accessing files right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows Vista/7 shouldn't be too different.
If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownneship from an account with administror privileges.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unkown error occurred [-1450]

Has anyone encountered the following iTunes error,
" The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unkown error occurred [-1450] "
Whenever I shut my iTunes down the next time I start it up the library seems to be lost. I can do an Add Folder to Library from the File options, pick my iTunes Music folder and copy everything back in. However the whole repeats when I close iTunes down again. Have tried re-installing iTunes but this did not work.
    Has anyone got any suggestions,
    Thanks.

Well, I installed the latest iTunes this AM, works perfectly.  Although for some reason it did lock up after playing a song today.
Horror stories?  That's a bit overly dramatic.
    No, it isn't.
The issue you are experiencing is one that has occurred in multiple versions of iTunes, a simple search would have revealed this.
A simple search was conducted, no one seemed to have an answer.  Do you always adopt such a haughty attitude?  Or was I just lucky.
