"Locked" iTunes on desktop

For some reason, when I try to open iTunes on my Mac is says "locked" and I "dont have write access" or somesuch. It wont let me access iTunes at all.
Ive been using iTunes on this Mac for 2 years with no problem ... and have changed nothing. This problem literally developed out of the blue.
Any thoughts?

Navigate through Finder to ./Users/YourUserName/Music/iTunes
Open an Info window on that folder
Expand "Ownership & Permissions" as well as "Details" underneath.
Make sure that you can "Read & Write" then hit the "Apply to enclosed items..." button

  • Can you "lock" iTunes Media Folder location?

One of the things I hate about iTunes is that I keep my music collection on an external hard drive with mirrored RAID array. Songs I buy are automatically transferred onto that drive. But sometimes, the hard drive will go offline, for whatever reason - a power issue, bumped by someone, whatever. When that does happen, iTunes doesn't give you a warning, it just defaults to the internal Music folders. Until you realize that the hard drive is offline, every CD you rip, every song you buy will go straight to the iTunes folder on the Mac. When you finally reconnect that hard drive, and redirect iTunes to the iTunes Media Folder on it, you're hopelessly lost, with your music collection distributed between the two drives.
First off, WHY can't iTunes notify you that it can't find the designated iTunes Media Folder? It'll notify you about just about every single other bloody thing that happens in the computer?
Second, is there a way to LOCK the iTunes Media Folder onto another drive, such that iTunes can't find the iTunes folder on the Mac HD?
Third, is there an easy way to scan the library on my Mac HD and on the external HD to find out which files are missing from the external HD and need to be manually added to the library?
    ks in advance!

Hi Jonathan, it annoyed the heck out of me too. Answers to your questions:
No idea, it’s probably trying to be “helpful”.
I don’t believe you can lock iTunes the way you want, but you CAN stop iTunes from running WITHOUT THE DRIVE YOU WANT I got sick of manually transferring songs when this happened to me too. In my case my library is on a network server (NAS). I wrote the following AppleScript to deal with the situation and it will work for any externally connected drive, network, USB, FireWire etc.
So to explain the script: I’m asking Terminal to list the directory contents of the iTunes Library folder on the external drive. If it can, it makes iTunes start. If it can’t (the “on error” bit), it beeps at you and displays a dialog box that tells you it cannot start. I then save the script as an App, and give it the same icon as iTunes has, but a different name (‘iTunes Custom Launcher” for example). Then I remove iTunes from the Dock and put my custom launcher in the Dock instead. Doing this means the only odd thing you will see is that when the launcher starts iTunes, there will seem to be two iTunes icons in the Dock, but only while iTunes is running.
    — Start of script
    tell application "Terminal"
              try
do shell script "ls \"/Volumes/Music/iTunes Library\""
                        tell application "iTunes" to activate
              on error
      beep
display alert "iTunes will not start until the Network Music Library is available"
              end try
    end tell
    tell application "Terminal" to quit
    quit
    — End of script
In order to use the script, you will need to replace the folder location of the iTunes Library. If you’re not familiar with Terminal, see what Finder says the name of the Disk (or network share) is when it is connected. Assuming your iTunes Library is called “iTunes Library”, the format of the third line of the script is:
do shell script “ls \"/Volumes/<disk or share name>/<folder>/<sub-folder…>iTunes Library\"”
If, like me, your iTunes Library folder is at the root of the external drive, you only need to replace <disk or share name> with the drive name and forget about the <folder>/<sub-folder…> bit. If you’re not sure what to do to the script let me know and we can do more Q&A to see exactly what you need to make the script look like.
    So, the main steps:
Open the AppleScript Editor and copy/paste the script into the blank window
Save the script as “iTunes Custom Launcher” and choose to save it as an Application.
Copy/Paste the app into your Applications folder using Finder
To give the new app the same icon as iTunes has (optional), in the Applications folder, select iTunes and copy it. Do a “Get Info" on your new app and select the little icon in the top-left of the info screen so it has a blue outline, then do command-V (paste).
Remove iTunes from the Dock and add your new app.
For your question 3, I would just go into the music folders of whoever logs on to your mac and manually move whatever folders for artists/albums/songs are there; it should be the last time
Let me know if you need more help

  • IPod Classic won't Restore and FREEZES/LOCKS iTUNES! Help.

    Hi. First, the specifics:
I have an iPOD Classic (120GB).
    I have Windows Vista R2 (64-bit).
I have the latest version of iTunes, yes, for 64-bit.
With that out of the way, I started seeing issues with my iPod not being able to play certain songs. I'd find the song, hit the play arrow, nothing would happen. The time would not move, song would not play. Here's what I've tried to do initially:
    Re-install iTunes, re-sync.
Still wouldn't play these songs.. Not all, but many songs.
    So, I tried to Restore.
Initially, it looked like it was restoring properly - - but took way longer than usual. Like 2 hours. At the end, I got an error "Could not sync this song, Could not sync iPod."
I looked at iPod, had to set it up, choose ENGLISH as language, etc.  Search iPod, found NO MUSIC, NO VIDEOS, etc.
    Tried simply re-syncing, wouldn't work.
So, I disconnected, restarted my computer and tried to RESTORE again.
I connect it via a USB 2.0 and the iPod cable. I have been doing this for years and years and this iPod has worked for the 3 years I have had it.
I have had iPod since their inception, so I'm not a rookie. I also have an iPhone and an iPad2.
So I connect the iPod as usual. NOW, it basically FREEZES iTunes. I CONTL-ALT-DEL and find it's always iTunes (NOT RESPONDING).
This happens EVERY TIME... I tried restarting several times, same issue.
So, I unistalled all components of iTunes > RESTART COMPUTER.
I re-download the latest version of iTunes, yes the correct one.
I tried syncing or restoring. DOESN'T RECOGNIZE iPOD, FREEZES/LOCKS iTUNES.
HERE'S OTHER THINGS I have tried:
RESTORING from DISK MODE. (DID NOT WORK, LOCKS iTUNES)
I downloaded the Windows Update for Vista that helps not corrupt iPod when disconnecting too early.
Downloaded update, did NOT help with the issue.
Un-installed iTunes again. Restarted computer. Re-installed newest version of iTunes.
ONE THING TO POINT OUT, when I connect my iPod, iTunes launches if not open and I get a WINDOWS box that says:
    MICROSOFT WINDOWS:
Do You Want To Scan And Fix Errors on Steven's iPod (L:) ??
I tried both options: YES, Try to Fix, NO - Continue
That doesn't work, and iTunes still freezes regardless of option.
Again, tried DISK MODE, tried Regular mode...
    Nothing works...
    PLEASE HELP...

Guys, if you all having the same problem as Steven, then do the iPod Disk Diagnostic, as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but helps in troubleshooting.
Main cause is the iPod Hardisk is dying, but if the DD report are good, then it is the USB connection timeout.
So have a go at the Disk Diagnostic first.

  • Locking iTunes on computer

Is it possible to lock itunes so when you click on the icon it asks for a user and and password before you can view the library or even have different accounts?

Just clarify a couple things for me, please.
Your kids both share a user account on windows xp AND they share an ipod? If this is the case, the best thing to do would be to have ALL of their music in the library. Then you could have each kid make a playlist, with their songs on that playlist. Then when they use the iPod, they can go to their playlist.

  • How to transfer iTunes from Desktop to Laptop

I have iTunes running on my desktop and Mediamonkey running on my laptop. I want to transfer my iTunes folder onto my laptop so I can import my tracks into Mediamonkey as most of my music is now being stored on it. I do not want to use iTunes on my laptop. How do I transfer my iTunes without losing the information?
      Windows XP
      Windows XP

You need to install iTunes on your laptop.
    Then drag the iTunes folder:
    My Documents\My Music\iTunes
to another location eg the laptop's desktop.
Then copy the iTunes folder from My Music on the desktop computer to the My Music folder on the laptop.
This could be done via an external drive, your iPod or network.
This Apple article gives the procedure using your iPod:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
But the method is essentially the same however you transfer the iTunes folder.

  • How can I transfer iTunes from Desktop PC to Laptop?

I have just brought a laptop and I would like to transfer my iTunes over from my desktop PC to my Laptop, does anyone now if this is possible and easy to do? Could I just download itunes from the internet on my Laptop or is it easier and better to transfer it all from my PC. My Laptop is Vista and my PC is running XP. Thank you.

The following article tells you how to do the transfer using an iPod. But the method is essentially the same whatever physical vehicle you use to copy files across. An external disk drive is good.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Be aware that when you transfer files from XP to Vista, you may run into permission issues as the the method involves copying the iTunes folder created on another computer to a Vista PC and vista is fussy about permissions. You need to be sure that your account on the vista PC has full control.

  • Please Help-- 1st Gen iPod not showing in iTunes or desktop :(

My 20g iPod doesn't show up anymore in iTunes or on the desktop, but the iPod itself does say "do not disconnect" when it's connected to the USB port. It's plugged directly into my computer and I've tried switching ports, so it's not that. I was able to connect my friend's nano, so the problem can't be the port.
I've done the 5 Rs without success. I only have OS X 10.2.8, so can't upgrade to iTunes 7. I had iTunes 6.0.5 but changed back to 6.0.4 after hearing that it might help with the iPod problem. Nothing seems to have changed, though, the iPod is still unrecognized by iTunes and the desktop.
I've read a bunch of posts saying to repair disk permissions, but when I open Disk Utility(which does show the iPod) my only options are Verify Disk and Repair Disk. Verify and Repair Disk Permissions are there but are in grey (can't click on them.)...
And my warranty ran out ages ago, so the Apple people won't help me. Great for them, but I'm screwed.
So I know very little about how these things work, and everything I've tried has failed thus far. Any advice you have would be wonderful!
    EMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   Mac OS X 10.2.8

Update: I get this message when the iPod is plugged into the computer:
"You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To use the unreadable volumes, click Initialize. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore."
There are three options: Initialize, Ignore, and Eject, but none of them do anything. ??? I'm clueless as to what to do here.

  • IPod icon not available in iTunes and Desktop

Okay gang here's one for you. While working on my Mac G4, I had ejected my iPod icon as I was getting ready to shut down for the day. Next day after downloading music from iTunes I suddenly noticed I no longer had the iPod icon on iTunes or my desktop.I have the U2 4th generation iPod. I have tried everythintg except standing on my head while doing the five R's. Nothing has brought back the icon. My iPod is fully charged and plays, but I can not place the new music in my library on it. HEEEELP PLEEEEASE!!!!!! Thanks

Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

  • ATV2 Locking iTunes EVERY TIME (5 Units/3 Macs)

Ok this is now just become stupid. I have 5 apple tvs, 3 are the ATV2s and 2 are ATV1.
If I try watch ANYTHING from an ATV2 my iTunes immediately stops responding. I have home share on 3 of my macs and tried all three, same result on each mac. It doesn't matter which ATV2 or which iTunes, it locks up.
It did this about 80% of the time after the last iTunes update and now with 10.2.2 it locks up 100% even with the latest ATV2 firmware.
Do I get support from Apple? NO ... you get nothing, nothing for investing in this much tech. Apparently ATV2s only have 90 day warranties ...
Do the ATV1s still work, kinda - sometimes the sync kills iTunes but at least synced content plays.

I was finally able to fix this - firstly, it was only TV Shows that caused a lockup and not movies or music.
I went into my library (after backing up manually) and deleted ALL the TV Shows, kept original file on disk. A few really didn't want to delete and it took a couple tries. I then added back a season at a time of each show, tested the ATV to make sure it was still ok. I finally ended up with ALL the TV Shows added back but the ATV was now working fine. I'm guessing I had some corruption in the library. What was just odd was why my other 2 macs did the same thing, different libraries and different TV Shows ... but fixed the same way.

  • Transferring music has locked iTunes But I want the music in my account.

I transferred my music files overnight from an older mac to a new iMac using migration assistant.  But it saved the music files in a new account ( from the old computer) which I don't want to use. So I copied and dragged the music file into the new account name files. But then after doing that iTunes won't open. I just get the iTunes locked message. I have checked that the permissions and sharing options for the music files and library are all set to read and write by everyone. 2 days in. Going to cry. All I want to do is move my music to my new computer. I'm about to wipe the new computer, and give up... Any ideas?

The suggested threads took me to someone who had fixed this. Although I thought I had changed permissions, clearly I had not done it for all enclosed files. Thanks..

  • IPod won't appear in iTunes or Desktop until I reset every time

Hi All. Sorry if this has been covered. I read the article on this (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60950), but it didn't help.
    My problem:
I have the 30gb 5th-gen iPod and an Intel 1.83 Mac mini (10.4.8). Recently, every time I plug in the iPod, the computer refuses to mount it. The iPod screen displays the "Do not disconnect" message, but the computer and iTunes don't see it. If I perform a soft reset (middle button + Menu) the computer will then recognize the iPod, but I have to do this every time!
I looked at and tried the suggestions in the Apple support document listed above, but none of them resolve the issue. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I have a similar problem well its more serious though -- I accidentally unplugged my 80 GB video iPod prematurely from my Intel based Mac Mini without ejecting it in iTunes and now the iPod is stuck on the Do Not Disconnect screen even after it was unplugged -- plugging it back in does not help any.
I have tried restarting my Mac Mini with it plugged in does not help at all -- tried pressing the hold switch back and forth on my iPod a 5th generation video version nothing -- iPod does not appear on my Mac Desktop, any Finder windows nor does it appear in Disk Utility or iTunes.

    I have a MAC OS X Version 10.3.9
My generation 3 Ipod won't appear on ITunes or my MAC desktop.
I have tried all of the suggestions on the page everyone kindly directs me to (docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60950).
I have borrowed several cables to no effect.
I can't restore my Ipod ( because it won't communicate with my MAC)
I have a 100 GB external HD with firewall.
The last time my Ipod worked it was plugged into the external HD.
Should I buy a new cable with a USB plug?
Do I have dead "plug-ins" on my MAC?

    Thanks

I have tries the cable on another Mac and my ipod did appear. So the problem lies with the Mac and not the iPod.
