Locked Music Folder/Disk/No Permission

My itunes recently froze and wouldn't respond to the Force Quit command. I logged everyone off of the computer, including myself, and logged back in. Itunes had been shut down during the log off. I tried to start it back up again to see what the problem had been only to receive an error saying that I either had a locked music folder, the folder was on a locked disk, or I didn't have permission to use the music folder. The whole program shuts down when you press the "Cancel" button (the only button available to press)
How on Earth do I fix this problem? I have no idea how anything was locked seeing as I didn't lock anything and the other users on the computer don't know how to lock a folder or disk. I don't know how I couldn't have permission since none of my admin powers have been changed since we first bought the computer and i've never run into this problem before.
HELP!

In Windows 8 I received the error iTunes Library .iti file is locked on a disk or you do not have permission for this file. I can open itunes in the compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3.
I've tried changing permissions and sharing - nothing seems to work. mat be a Windows 8 issue???

You also need to make sure you have both read and write permission for the file, or for the whole iTunes folder for that matter.  That's also done in Get Info for the file or folder concerned.

  • Locked songs after restoring music folder

I am running 10.3.9 with iTunes 7.0 on an iBook G4. The hard disk just died and needed to be replaced. Fortunately I had a back up drive, so I have been able to restore nearly all the data, but with one big problem. My daughter's iTunes music folder has over 2,000 songs in it and most were purchased from ITMS. On both the back-up hard disc and on the restored laptop all the songs that were purchased are "locked." If I go down to the individual file and open it (not from iTunes) it makes me log into the music store and "reauthorize" the song. I have already reauthorized the machine. The AppleCare folks said my only alternative was to do this one song at a time! There has to be a better way - any ideas? I've heard you can restore a library from the iPod in iTunes 7.0, but everything I've read indicates you need to do that by moving a music folder with the iPod basically serving as a back up disc. That won't work here because all the songs in the folder are already locked.

You posted on the iTunes for Mac forum and I'll request this be moved as sometimes the answers will vary on the different platforms.
Did you only copy music, or did you copy the whole iTunes folder (I hope very much you copied it all as it contains the library files that form the core of your collection management)?

  • Adding music folder from hard disk to itunes causes the original music  to vanish

what is causing itunes to delete original music folder from hard disk when selecting add folder to itunes

iTunes doesn't have any automatic way of re-creating your directory structure in terms of folders and playlists in iTunes.   You will have to drag each music folder to a playlist and then arrange these in folders inside of iTunes (which I warn you can can slow down iTunes a lot).   I guess the once chance of speeding this up will be if somebody has written an Applescript to do it, but I don't remeber seeing any anywhere.

  • Can the path to the iTunes Music folder be locked?

I'm trying to simplify the results of my own occasional user error.
Can the path to the iTunes Music folder be locked?
I have my library stored on an external drive that I keep turned off when not in use. If I accidentally start iTunes with that drive off, it recreates the original iTunes Music folder and directs itself there.
Can that behavior be stopped? It seems like there should be a way for iTunes to send a pop up or something, rather than this automated over ride to manual settings.

Yeah, I know I don't have an end of the world scenario here.
But just remounting the drive doesn't do it. I have to go back into iTunes and reset the folder location. Then wait several minutes as it all reorganizes itself.
I know just leaving the drive on is the easiest answer. It causes too much of a domestic dispute about all the blinking boxes I have running all the time. I have convinced her that the green one on the AEBS has to be on if she wants internet.

  • Automatic copy music files in music folder to the data disk storage

I got the shuffle as a Christmas present last year. It was working fine until today. Once I plugged to shuffle onto my laptop, it automatically copy all the music files in my music folder (my hardisk) to my shuffle. It copies them to my data disk storage, as if I want to back up them or transfer them to another computer. I don't know where to change the setting, as it used to work fine and I didn't change anything since then.
Anyone has any idea how to fix this? Basically now I can't use my shuffle as the memory stick.

Yes it is possible, and in fact quite easy.
Insert the flash drive in your computer and open it so it looks like a window.  Over in iTunes, highlight the tracks you want (or CTRL+A to get a whole playlist) and drag to the open flash drive window.
If you normally run iTunes in full-scree mode, make it smaller so that you can do the drag.

  • After moving Music folder to external disk, iTunes and iPhone Apps gone :-(

My 70GB PowerBook G4 needed disk space, hence I copied the Music folder to an external backup drive, and from there to a tiny portable drive, and then deleted it on the Mac (gained 14GB of space).
When I ran iTunes, and changed the location of the iTunes library to the portable drive, none of the music files are visible; worse yet, none of the iPhone Apps shows up. So I don't dare to synchronize, because I am afraid that I may even loose the iPhone Apps on the iPhone.
    Your hints/solutions/suggestions are most welcome.
    Thanks and cheers,
    Veit

Thanks. John, for your excellent problem-solvers.
Since I had already deleted the itunes files on my Mac, I went the "TimeMachine restore way" and it works. Thanks! Good also to know that the iPhone Apps are always available.
Perhaps you know the answer to another iTunes/iPhone question:
On the iPhone I have some iPod music, but I hardly use it. When I sync the iPhone with the Mac, I'd rather just leave the music on the iPhone "alone" and only sync the iPhone Apps. But when I un-check the Sync Music box (in iTunes>Devices>iPhone>Music tab) I am getting a message that if I do not sync the music, the tunes on the iPhone will be deleted. How do I leave the music on the iPhone, WITHOUT syncing it with iTunes on the Mac (while syncing Apps, and perhaps photos)? Any suggestions there?
    Cheers, Veit

  • I've update my music using an external disk; now I uploaded agin the music  but it doesn't appear in Itunes. How can I synchronize the music folder with Itunes?

I've managed my music downloading and uploading it from an external disk; I put the music into the Finder MUSIC folder and copyed it into Itubìnes but it does't appear. What Do I have to do? How can I synchronize the Musice Folder with Itunes?

    Chris, thanks for the reply.
That's what I'm confused about. I did exactly what you said. I copied the entire music folder from the old computer and put it in the music folder on the new computer. I've tried that two or three times now. And, I've checked, and all of the files are there (that's what I meant by 'clicking on Itunes Media'--when I click on the iTunes media folder in music/itunes in Finder, all of the files are there). But, when I open iTunes, nothing shows up--no movies, no music, no tv shows. It seems like it should be so simple, but it won't work for me.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks so much.

  • Deleted My Music Folder

I have lost/deleted "my music" folder from my computer, i can no longer open iTunes without it, the following error message appears when i try to open it-- The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder
i have restored the music files/songs from my iPod onto a different folder, how do i now get iTunes working again without the original "my music" folder or how do i make a new “my mucis” folder. I really like using all the iTunes functions and wish to continue using it. Is there a third party application that will allow me to use the same function as iTunes?

  • ITunes Disk Access Permission Error after Account Migration

We purchased a new mac mini and used the account migration tool to move an account from a g4 Powerbook to the new machine. Everything went fine, but there was a problem with iTunes. It would not import any music from a CD. The error was "You do not have disk permission to write the music."
    HOW TO FIX:
    1/ Go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced
2/ Check the iTunes Music Folder Location. (it is the first window down)
3/ It should say something like:
    Macintosh HD:Users:yourname:Music:iTunes:iTunesMusic...
(In our case, it was still set for the old machine.)
5/ Select "reset" button on right. Click OK.
    That's it.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

I followed the instructions and it opened the itunes application correctly and allowed the user to access itunes account. However when I overwrote the new library folder with the old one the problem re-appeared so the fault lies with this library folder and some sort of permissions issue?. This has happened with a lot of accounts on our system and I am at a loss as to why it is happening. Furthermore it has now started to occur with Apple works files. Any ideas anyone?

  • Recovering "iTunes Music" folder from Time Machine Backup (Permissions Err)

OK, long story, but stay with me.... could be an interesting one here.
So I move to a SSD hard drive in my 24" iMac. New Intel SSD drive is only 160GB, so I'm only using it for the OS, Applications, etc... all of my data is on an external FW800 disk (Western Digital MyBook). I've already relocated my Home Directory to the external drive and that seems to be working great for all my pictures, docs, movies, etc, except for iTunes.
My iTunes library comes up, but I can't locate any of the songs. I checked the preferences and it's pointed to the correct location on the external disk. So, I was trying to do the relocation, but it would appear that the MUSIC folder does not have all the data i copied into it. When I try to open the "iTunes Music" folder I get this error... "The folder "iTunes Music" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see it's content". I've checked my Time Machine drive which obviously has all the music files on it (the space is taken up), but I can't get to them to recover.
Any clue how I can get this permissions error resolved so I can get my music? I have (3) backups of the same directory... all the same story, no permissions. I even created the same user account name when I rebuilt Snow Leopard on the SSD.

I don't think you understand. I need to get my music from Time machine where it is backed up. How do i find it in time machine and how do i transfer it to a seperate HD?

  • Re-installing problem with My Music Folder

I had successfully moved ITunes to an XHD, and the stupid thing crashed. I DLed an "IPod to HD" copy program and copied all the tunes off the IPod back to the internal HD, into a newly created "My Music" folder. I burned them to DVD just to be safe while they were still MP3s, then DLed ITunes. When I try to start ITunes, it tells me "The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location is inside the "My Music" folder." I created a My Music folder in both my internal HDs just to help it find the folder it wanted, but no go. What can I do to fix this, please?
