Locked nano

I one and half year old Nano has a Lock icon in the upper left and will not unlock no matter what I do. It somewhat responds when I plug it in to the computer USB. It's charged fully, I was able to reset it, but now I cannot set the language because the dial will not respond to any input.
any ideas?
Thanks O'Niell

The HOLD switch (that slide switch on the top left as you're looking at the nano from the front) is ON or stuck in the ON position, thus the little lock icon and the fact that you cant use the click wheel.
Slide it back and forth a number of times and make sure that it shows white to the right and NOT orange to the left of it.

  • How to lock Nano v6?

One of the things I miss on the 6th generation Nano is the ability to "lock" the device to prevent any button press from doing anything.  As a runner, biker, and dog walker, I find my hands constantly in my pockets when it is cold.  It is really easy to knock the Nano off its current program onto something different.  Then I have to stop, go through a bunch of different steps to get back to where I was before the inadvertent knock.
Is there some special keypress sequence that can be used to lock the touchscreen and prevent it from acting on inadvertent touches?

Once the screen display "times-out" (after about one minute) and goes black, you must press the on button to get the display and controls to reappear. In other words, after the display disappears, you cannot "accidentally" fast forward or adjust volume without first pressing the on button. I use the Apple remote and mic earphone cable ($29 from Apple) with mine to control volume, song selection, pause, etc. while exercising which gets around the problem.

Suggestions?

    - After charging for 1/2 hour or so, does iTunes see the iPod?  If yes, restore the iPod from backup.
    - If no, se if placing the iPod in recovery mode will make it visible so you can restore the iPod.  For recovery mode see:

I downloaded the latest version of itunes and now my ipod nano won't sync.  The sync process appears to lock up on the 2nd song and will not continue to sync. I let it run all night the first time and it never went past the 2nd song.  I unchecked the 2nd song so a different song would be 2nd, no benefit; reset my ipod nano; shut down laptop and restarted a different time; shorted the number of songs to sync; all without benefit.

When you connect your ipod up to the computer. It should show the device, usually with the name of the device, in my case 'jordan's ipod'. This should be on the row which shows 'songs', 'albums' e.t.c on the far right. There when you click on it it should go to a different screen showing a picture of your ipod along with two buttons - Update and Restore. Click update and it should take a 2 mins while your ipod is updated to the latest version of Ios.
After updating te ipod see if there is a change in results.
PS: make sure the device is active while syncing so keep tapping the screen.

  • Ipod nano is not recognized by itunes.  it is also locked and no password known

Ipod Nano 4th generation (the slim colored one) - the screen is locked - didn't set a passcode.  Also will not sync with itunes so can't reset that way.  When plugged into computer cycles between being 'connected' to the black Apple screen.  I have Windows Vista.  Works with other ipods registered.  This is the original computer for the troubled ipod.  Please respond with any possible solutions.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1350
    Unlocking iPod
You can unlock iPod in one of two ways:
Enter the combination on iPod using the same controls you used to set the combination. If you do not enter the correct combination, the digits onscreen flash red. When you enter the combination correctly, iPod will unlock and return you to the last viewed screen.
Connect iPod to the primary computer you use it with (the first one iPod synced with), and open iTunes. When you disconnect iPod from the computer, it will no longer be locked.
If you can't unlock iPod using either of these methods, you can restore your iPod to factory settings. Please note that this will erase all data on your iPod. Afterwards, you can add your music and data back to iPod.

  • Ipod Nano Locked Up PLEASE HELP!!!

Ok, I purchased a second generation 4gig green Ipod nano on Monday. For some strange reason today it locked up. Now it refuses to work at all. It is stuck with the backlight on and the music paused. I do not know what I did worng or if it is my Ipod. It was working perfectly. Then I pressed pause and it screwed up. If nobody can help me by tommorrow I will have to take it back. Also, my computer just managed to detect it. It told me I should restore it so I told it yes. Now it keeps having the error message "There was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "iPod". The requested resource was not found." Somebody please help me.
      Windows Vista

Igor, could you tell me what you did to fix it? My
iPod fell out of my locker and now my iPod's stuck on
    hold!
Are yu saying that the hold switch doesn't work to get it out of "Hold"? Have you tried (with the hold switch in the left or off position) to reset it: press and hold Menu and Select (center) buttons at the same time for at least 6 seconds?

  • Windows Vista Locks out when plugging in Nano 3g with iTunes 8.0

When I plug in my ipod Nano 3g after updating to iTunes 8.0...it locks out my Windows Vista and terminates Windows session. System automatically restarts and will not restart if the iPod remains connected. 5 r's of troubleshooting do not help...I get the same problem. I would probably like to go back to the previous version of iTunes I had, but not sure which one I had? 7.6?

I have the same problem. as soon as I plug my ipod in, I get a blue screen of death., I've tried everything. My 2g nano works fine. tried the umpteen r's to no avail. I hope someone knows what is going on.

  • IPod Nano 5th Gen shuts down when locked

I have the iPod Nano 5th Generation 8GB in Silver. I bought it recently, second hand from eBay. I originally thought that the iPod was broken, until I plugged it in to my PC and it came to life. However, when it is not connected to my PC or charging, it shuts down after 15 minutes of being locked. I have looked through all of the settings, including Sleep Timers, and Reset the settings to default, yet it still happens. I could find nothing wrong in the diagnostics menu (besides the fact that the battery life is less than what it should be) and could find nothing on the internet that had anything to do with my issue. I am considering getting a refund on the iPod unless there is an easy fix for this.
    Thanks in advance

Make sure your headphone plug is pushed all the way into the connecton until no silver is showing.  You will hear a click and feel it snap all the way in.

  • ITunes 9.0.2 locks trying to sync iPod nano under Windows 7 Enterprise x64

I've been fighting this thing for a couple weeks now and it's getting to be very frustrating. I wanted to sync some new music purchases onto my various iPods, but ended up with a 5G iPod Video with just a couple songs on it and which refused to sync. It had been fine before I tried to sync it, with about 45GB of music on it, but now I couldn't get it to work at all. I formatted it, I ran chkdsk, I restored it, but nothing I did would make it sync. I thought the hard drive was fried, so I ordered a new 160GB Classic. After I got it, I found that it did the same thing! iTunes would simply hang trying to sync to it and it would never get more than a couple songs on there before giving up.
What it would do is spin for a couple minutes and then lock up completely. If it was playing a song, it would finish the song but then not go to the next one and just stop. I couldn't bring it up, I couldn't click on it, I couldn't close it. I couldn't even end the task in Task Manager. Even ejecting the drive in Windows didn't make a difference. The only way to get it back was to unplug the iPod. Then iTunes would come back and I could use it again.
Finally, I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, and then both the new Classic and the old Video were able to sync with no problems. I can't tell you how happy I am to have spent that $235 for no good reason!
So next I grabbed my 3G Nano and tried to sync it. No dice, same problem. So I tried all the same things, check for errors, format, restore. All of this was much quicker since it's only 8GB of flash instead of a 60GB hard drive, but still none of it worked. Finally I installed iTunes on my work laptop running Windows XP, imported the iTunes library from my other machine (via .xml), and waited. And waited. And waited. It takes a long time to rebuild the library from that xml file! When it was done, I plugged the Nano into the XP laptop and restored it... and it synced! Like it was nothing at all. Everything went on there quickly and with no fuss.
Now, this is the same content, my music is on a network drive. So there is no difference whatsoever in what was being synced. The only difference is the PC being used.
So, what the heck! I do need to get iTunes working on my primary machine again, as this is the machine I use. I can't depend on my work laptop to sync the Nano since I'd have to re-import the entire library every time to get the changes I've made. Is there some known issue with Windows 7 x64 and iTunes 9.0.2? This used to work just fine! Please, if anyone has any suggestions I could really use some relief.
    Thanks!!

Doublechecking something Emcee. I see you've got Windows 7 x64, so I'm assuming you've got at least 4 GB of RAM. Do you also have an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset on that PC? If so, see the following Microsoft document:
[You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972]

  • 3rd gen nano. Lock click wheel volume control but NOT track control???

My title basically says it all. I have a 3rd gen Nano that I want to use solely for a car and it won't be removed. Problem? The track control has to be done on the iPod itself as the car stereo won't do it, but the volume can be controlled by the car's head unit. That said I want the iPod volume to always be on max. Apparently the volume lock feature isn't what I'm looking for, nor is the hold switch. I want to lock the volume from being controlled by the scroll wheel but still be able to change tracks using the scroll wheel... without having to go into a menu or anything. The iPod will eternally be on shuffle and any track changes will just be skipping songs... and all done blindly just by touch... hence why it's driving me nuts I keep scrolling the volume down. Hope that makes some sense. I'm long-winded and wordy but not always clear. Lol

The system won't seem to let me post this anywhere... it's saying I'm not allowed whatever that means. Exception being this community. So sorry if I pi** everyone off by listing in the wrong location.

  • IPod nano locked with folder and exclamation

I have received today a new iPod nano and it has worked just for an hour. In the middle of a transfer from my pc it got locked. I tried everything but to no avail. It doesn't reset pressing select and menu and it doesn't restore with iPod updater, because it cannot write to it. All I see is the folder with an exclamation mark and the support page ("www.apple.com/support/ipod"). So I am lost.
    Any help?

If you put it in disk mode, then try connecting to the computer and restoring.

  • IPod Nano Screen Lock bug

I think I have discovered a bug in the iPod Nano software. I'm using the latest software available as for today.
I lock the iPod Nano's screen and as expected, the graphical display of a combination lock appears. I insert the iPod Nano on to the Universal Dock and then proceed to control the Nano from the Apple Remote. It works partly. I am able to pause and play music and after a song finishes, it goes to the next one. I am not, however, able to fast forward, rewind, or skip tracks. I am able to play and pause, plus the Nano goes to the next track automatically after it finishes play the current one.
Seems to me a bug! I would imagine that the screen lock is supposed to lock all kinds of control to the iPod except entering password.

connect it to itunes and it will unlock

  • I can't unlock my ipod nano 4th generation.  The screen is still working, I can sync to my computer and I can see when it is charging but it stays in the mode of being locked even after I unlock it at the top.

  • 3rd gen nano locked in connect mode

I have a 3rd gen Nano that was disconnected while charging without being ejected. Now it thinks it is still connected and I can't get it to do anything. I have tried resetting, plugging back in and trying to eject and restarting computer with it plugged in, nothing. Any suggestions?

I did try that but it didn't work at the time. However it seems to have fixed itself.  The way it was locked, it wouldn't even go to dark screen and turn off so this morning when I got up the battery was dead and it reset itself. Thanks for your input and help.
