Locked out of external Drives

I hope someone can help me....... after restoring my system from a timemachine backup I had some permission problems, so I opened get info on my HD and set the permissions and applied to enclosed items. I now have my two external hard drives ( 1 a USB 1 TB WD and another a 320 GB firewire(time machinebackup) locked, a small padlock at the bottom left of the icon and I can not access them...... It tells me I do not have sufficient access privileges.
Numerous restores and even a clean erase and install does not remove the locks ........
I can't even change the drives permissions ....... HELP

First of all, NEVER EVER EVER use "apply to enclosed items" any system created folders and the startup drive!
to unlock the drives run the following terminal commands from an admin account for each affected drive.
sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/"drive-name"
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"drive-name"
Put the name of the drive instead of drive-name in the above, keep the quotes.
You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see) after the first command. that's normal.

  • How to unlock a locked folder on external drive when locked checkbox greyed out

I use an external hard drive for Time Machine backups and to store some larger video files in a folder called Videos.  The Videos folder on the external drive is now locked and I can't unlock it.  I go to Get Info, hit the lock icon and enter my password, but the "Locked" checkbox is greyed out in the General section.  In the Sharing and Permissions section, instead of displaying my name, it says "Fetching . . ." and I can't change the Privilege from "Write Only".
Anybody know what's causing this or how to fix it?
    Thanks.

Launch Terminal and copy/paste this command at the prompt…
    chflags nouchg
Then drag the files you are having a problem with into Terminal. It will create the path, then press Return.

  • RAW Support 3 Update LOCKED ALL My External Drives!

OK, Can't get Aperture 2.1.4 to open or create any Libraries since the RAW 3 Support and iLife 09 update yesterday (came in through Software Update).
    Running a PowerMac G5 tower, OSX 10.5.8
The Update worked fine with iPhoto 8.1.1 and I can now open RAW files from my new Canon S90.
I have 8 external FW drives which are now all "Read Only" and the lock is Grayed Out.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks for the response. I decided to try the Bob Timmons approach of shutting everything down for a half hour and then restarting the external drives and then 5 minutes later start the Mac.
    This worked!
All of my FW drives now say "Read & Write" and all is back to normal.
However Aperture 2.1.4 still will not recognize CR2 (RAW files) OR JPEGs from the new Canon S90.
    iPhoto8.1.1. sees both now.

  • IPhoto library locked on failing external drive

I have my iPhoto library on an external hard drive which I also used as a time machine/backup. I did this to save space on my much older macbook, and when I purchased a new macbook it would have taken months for the full iPhoto library to be moved to the new computer, so I left it on my external drive. Unfortunately, that external hard drive has started to fail. I ran the disk utility repair to try and fix the external drive, and I was able to retrieve everything off of the external drive except for my pictures, which are locked in that darned iPhoto library. I have not yet found a way to retrieve or move the pictures or the entire iPhoto library from the failing drive. My MacBook Pro is AOK, my iPhoto is fine- and I think the library would have been fine as well if not for the external drive failing. It hasn't completely crashed, and I'm afraid to do much more to it. I can still hack into the in the disk utility to see the files it's holding hostage. I desperately need to get the pictures back though. Is there any way to rescue my precious pictures? Please help!

Bear in mind that Time Machine will apply ACL's (extended permissions) to the backup disk so it may be completely normal to be unable to access files on that disk. If you are trying to use an iPhoto library inside the backups folder it may not work at all - it must be copied off to another disk to use with iPhoto.
With that said, if the disk is failing or damaged it may not mount in Finder - is that what is happening here?
It is also possible that the failure is the 'external case' and not the actual disk, if the controller is not working the disk may not mount - sometimes you can get a disk to work by using a different external case or a USB toaster
You will need to consider data recovery if the disk is on it's last legs or is corrupted. Frankly this is complex & you should send it to data recovery professionals if you are inexperienced - it is the best way to stand any chance of recovering data on a failing drive, but it is costly. You are also correct to se the disk as little as possible - if the damage is a mechanical issue reading the disk can cause the disk to fail quicker.
If you are intent on doing data recovery yourself you must get another disk that is larger than the disk you need to repair. Then you can use tools like Disk Warrior or or Disk Drill to repair the disk or recover the files.
Provide more info about where the library is & the state of the disk, you may not need to do recovery.

replaced optical drive now locked out of hd start up drive will not mount can some one help me

I didn't ask you if you thought you ordered the correct optical drive...
You opened up the machine. You made a change. Now it doesn't work. Reverse what you did and see if it works again.  I'm assuming that the machine actually worked before you did this, right?

  • Final Cut Pro difficulty exporting QuickTime movie out to external drive

Hi every one I hope some one can help me figure out why whenever I export a Quicktime movie and save it on an external LaCie drive, two files come out with the same name but one has an -av1 extension. And if I delete that file the original movie doesn't play.
    Any one has any idea???
    please help!
    thanks.

Your external drive is probably formatted as MS-DOS. It has a file size limit of either 2Gb if formatted as FAT16 or 4GB if formatted as FAT32.
In either case, reformat the drive to Mac OS Extended. You will lose any material on the drive in the reformat process unless you copy it to another drive.

  • Repair Permissions Grayed Out On External Drive

I was having some strange issues with my firewire disk in Final Cut Pro so I decided to repair the premissons using disk utility. For some reason "repair premissions" is grayed out. I did a repair disk and everything showed to be fine, but repair premissions is still grayed out.
Any idea what's going on? Or what I should do?
    Thanks.

    Rick,
Did you ever solve this problem? I'm having the exact same issue. I have a Late 2011 MBP 17" with the i7 2.5. I have 16GB RAM installed and a Samsung 830 250GB SSD in the original HD spot with a 750GB Hybrid drive in the optibay. When a heavy load is being placed on the 750gb drive, it'll unmount and I will get the "didn't eject" error. I have to turn it off for about 5 minutes then boot it to have the drive recognized again. I especially notice this when I'm running VMWare Fusion along with my Mac and the Windows side is having to do some "hard" work.

  • Login users locked out of hard drive

Performed machine updates, now users logging in do not have access permission to the applications folder or the Library folder in the hard drive. Users can get to their documents, but have no access to applications. The Info screen indicates that the permission level for everyone is Read Only when logged into machine as Admin. Ran Repair Disk Permissions utility with no success.
Following two warnings appear in repair disk permission
Warning SUID File "System/LIbrary/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning SUID File "User/bin/lppasswd" has been modified and will not be repaired
    any suggestions???

the messages in disk utility are harmless and should be ignored. they have nothing to do with your problem. what kind of update are you talking about?
I suspect the group on /Applications and /Library may have changed from admin to wheel. to confirm that run the following terminal command.
    ls -ladeO /Applications /Library
    post the results.

  • My external drive is not being recognized by ITunes library

How do I change either the software, or the hardware drive letter, so that they work together as one?
My WiFi was installed as a K:/ drive and it cancelled out my external drive which was also drive K:/. Now my Itunes software will not recognize my external drive. Any suggestions folks?
Thanks for anthing you may suggest.
    Rich

Plug in the flash drive in question. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. In the lefthand sidebar do you see your flash drive listed? It will appear sort of like this:
Select the topmost listing then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Select one partition from the Partition Layout dropdown menu. Click on the Options button and set the partition scheme to MBR and click on the OK button. Set the Format Type to exFAT from the dropdown menu. Click on the Apply button.
You should be able to use the flash drive on both Macs and PCs.

  • Filevault and backing up to external drive

I have a desktop which I use at my office which contains all of my personal and business data. I am trying to figure out how to secure the data on this computer. I do daily encrypted backups to an external drive using prosoft engineerings data backup 3.0 (which is a very good app) so I have a back up. I had tried filevault but got scared after reading about corrupted data and data loss. My question about filevault is: If I have filevault on and if I am logged in to my account and I back-up to an external drive am I backing up readable data or is it encrypted?

But wouldn't monfriar have to enable FileVault to try? That's an easy way to lose your data.
From what I've heard (I don't use FileVault), FileVault will not back up your home directory files while you are logged in. It will, however, backup your encrypted sparseimage if you are logged out. Unfortunately, I also this it will back up a brand new copy of that sparseimage file each time. You should run out of external drive space in about 3 days.
In any event, if the file system on the sparseimage file is corrupted, that will get backed up as well. I don't see how using FileVault with Time Machine would be better than your current system.
I don't recommend that anyone use FileVault without a good, unencrypted backup. If you are backpacking across Azerbaijan, for example, it might be a good idea to use FileVault on your Macbook you take with you. Just leave an unencrypted copy at home.

  • How can I restore my library that was erased off external drive....

I just accidently erased 90% of my itunes library that was reading off an external drive. The last 10% was recently purchases music that I downloaded directly to my laptop hard drive and remains intact (makes sense?). Basically I wiped out the external drive that my 90% library read to.
I was able uncover hidden files off my ipod and inturn copy my library back to the external drive but the big question is - is there a way to restore all this without having to start over Itunes? Can I reimport it off the external drive from the ipod copyover? One thing I can't do is copy it back onto the laptop hard drive because there's nowhere near enough space. Thanks for you help!

OK first thing you might want to do is read this post of mine from the other day...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6296361&#6296361
because, well I am too lazy to type much of it again.
But the part that really is for you is about half way down, just above the link where it starts with "If it was me, " which is what you want to do. In your case, you would use the "Add to library..." command twice. Once to add all the files from the external, and then again to grab all the ones off the internal, if you want everything located in one location. You can then remove the ones from your internal AFTER you verify that they made it to the external ok.
As noted in that post at the end, but worth repeating, doing it with that method keeps everything all together (database files, media files, etc) in a single folder for your library rather than your database files on the internal and your media on the external or spread across both drives. If you ever need to move the library or want to use your library on other computers, you can simply move the folder or the entire drive and use the above instructions to open your library.

  • 2 of the same external drives showing up in Lr

Yesterday, I mistakenly imported some trash files (html) into Lr. This caused Lr to crash whenever the image came up in the viewer on my screen. Weird, but luckily I was able to get the files out of Lr, and everything seems all better.
However, during the crash, I pulled out the external drive everything is stored without unmounting it. I know know that mac and programs really don't like that.
Now post crash, in my left nav, Lr is showing the same external drive twice. And now when I import, it goes to the second one.
What did I do and is it fixable?
Thank you very much. Image attached,
35,000 images so far, and Lr is very quick. Backing up my backups...
    Lr 2.1
imac 3.06 Core 2 Duo 4 GB SDRAM
35,000 images so far in 1 catalog
    Canon Gear

    You described what you did!
You do have but one drive, and LR is seeing double, so to speak?
I suspect, though, that it's using different folders inside the "doubled version". Use LR to consolidate all images inside of one, then delete the 'other', after double checking there are no images inside of 'it'. This all after a complete backup.

  • Swapping external drive causes new clips to be ingested onto internal Mac drive. Why?

    Hi folks,
I've recently begun to swap my external hard drive (the one I use for ingesting AVCHD video clips) for another, due to many projects on the go. What I'm finding now is that when I ingest new footage, it winds up being ingested onto my laptop's internal drive, even though in the FCE4 settings it says that my scratch drive is the external one. Of course, my laptop drive then fills up very quickly. I then have to copy all the files from the laptop's internal drive to my external video drive and reconnect the media. It's time-consuming and frustrating. Anyone know why this is happening and how I might correct the problem?
    Thanks very much,
    Vic

Both of the drives I'm swapping out are firewire drives. The system picks up whichever is connected and identifies it fine. However, I did notice, the first time I swapped, that when I swapped back to the first drive, FCE created a whole, second set of files for video capture, render and audio; both sets of files are on the one drive; from that point on, any new projects went into the second (redundant) set of capture/render files. Everything still worked fine, so I let it go.
I continued to use the system that way, but when I swapped out the external drive a few more times, the ingesting of new project files started going to my MacBook Pro's internal hard drive. It's as if the computer has become confused because I've been swapping drives.
I read awhile back that it's very important to name external drives with names that are very different from one another, otherwise the system doesn't always know which drive is which. Weird, especially since computers are so very particular about keystrokes! Anyways, I heeded the advice and gave each of my drives names that are in no way similar. I mention this because it could be relevant to what I'm currently experiencing. All I know is I'm baffled. Seems to me that switching out drives between projects seems like a logical way to deal with the huge file sizes involved in HD video.
Anyways, I will try your suggestions. How do I trash the FCE Preferences?
Also, what does Repair Permissions do? Is that, like, some kind of factory re-set?
    Thanks very much Al.

  • Cannot mount external drive on network when no user logged in

We have a few workstations on our network that have multiple accounts for users in order to preserve preferences, etc. An external hard drive attached to the each workstation, holds work done on that station by the different users. When all users are logged out, the external drive does not appear as a mountable device when trying to log into the workstation from another computer; only the internal drives are seen and mountable.
Is there a way to make the external drive visible and available for mounting over the network when no user is logged in? The external drive is set to ignore permissions for that drive in the get info window.
Additionally, when a user is logged in to the workstation and someone tries to log in over the network to access the external drive, the drive is sometimes available over the network and other times not. What causes this inconsistency?
    thx, j

You really want to format it HFS+ wiyh GUID Partition scheme to ensure your data transfers correctly...
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
(On IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Not sure if that'll make it see it or not, but your data will be better. Besides, you should be able to install to that then & maybe boot from it to ease matters.

  • PERMISSION MESSED UP HELP ! LOCKED OUT OF DISKS

I messed up permssions by accidentally changing the get info window on my internal hard disk  - the HD - instructing it to apply the altered & mistaken permissions to everything inside the HD volume. The system crashed and I couldn't boot up.
So, I re-installed snow leopard from the CD and did a restore from the time machine  backup which was residing on an external disk.
But when completed I still had messed up permissions everywhere & was locked out of all my external hard disks - including the one with the backup on.
Although the computer was working, things were wrong and the time machine could not access the external disk to do any more backups either.
In its present state, the computer is unusable as I cannot move anything to other folders without it copying and I have to provide my password a thousand times an hour for doing things plus I'm locked out of external discs.
Does anyone know what to do abokut this ?
I read some old threads from 2009 here which mention lots of people having this problem, but nothing I do has worked  and I guesss those threads are far too out of date to of use.

I've tried everything I can think of and am still locked out of a partition on my computer hard disk where I had stored a previous, older OS & I am also, separately, locked out of a partition on an external hard disk which I think also has an old OS, possibly Tiger, on.
But worse than that is that in the past few days my whole main user account on the computer which I had restored by booting up from the Snow Leopard OS disk holding down the  'C' key is becoming increasingly corrupted. It is painfully slow & unusable because of that, & the time machine backups seem to have gone nuts., One produced a 500 plus GB backup from a computer hard disk which is only 250 GB big. Others time machine backups remain incomplete, others backup really, really slowly and never seem to complete. It's chaos.
Then today safari just refused to load in that main user account although it continued to load and allow it to be used  in another account.
The only solution seems to me to be to completely erase everything, everywhere and  re-install the Snow Leopard OS again after emptying the computer hard disc completely.
And then leaving all my information on the external hard discs and not restore as I did before because that will just re-install the same problems.
I find this ridiculous and now I have learnt a bit more about it and the fact that many people have had this problem when restoring from a time machine backup it seems to me that apple software is just total rubbish and not fit for purpose.
Can anyone tell me what on earth is the solution to restoring default permissions on ALL files. As I mention above the standard solution of booting up in the OS install disc & going to utilities/reset password and then reset the ACL just refuses to work for my main user account, although it did allow reset for the other accounts which had hardly any files in them.
I really & truly cannot believe the way software is written so consistently badly.
