locked out - permissions problem - List Fetching instead of my name under Get Info - can nott unlock files and some apps

For 10.7, hold down Command R at Startup and you get recovery Mode Utilities.
Choose Disk Utility. Select your Hard drive. Check the SMART Status for "Verified. Select the Boot Volume, by default it is "Macintosh HD".Run REPAIR disk. If it completes without incident, run Repair Permissions as well.
You can also hold down Option at Startup, and Choose Recovery HD as the boot device. It gets you to the same place in Utilities.

Any ideas how I can get around the password and login. I tried the method where you go into single user mode and type in commands, however that method uses some of the letters that are not working on my laptop.

You didn't mention which version of OS X your running but there are password reset utilities provided OS X: Changing or resetting an account password (Snow Leopard and earlier) - Apple Support  or  OS X: Changing or resetting an account password - Apple Support
Alternately you can use an external keyboard to log in and change the password. Make a backup if you don't have one, it's likely that your problems aren't over. If that water continues to migrate downward and fries the logic board your macbook will be toast.

  • I got locked out of Mac os 9 and now I can't get into OS 9 or OS X.  All I see is the Macintosh SE and a finder face and text that says "mac os 9.2 welcome to mac os".  I can't get into COntrol Panel to reset the password to allow me to get in.

Do you have OS X and OS 9 installed on your Mac? If so, startup with the Option key depressed. This will open the Startup Manager window. Select the OS you want to start from & click the right arrow.

  • Delete a genre under "get info" genre list

Under "Get Info", how do I remove a genre from the list of genres? The list has become large and unwieldy...!

Your answer shows how to remove a genre that shows up on an ipod. I believe that the question being asked is how to remove a genre from the pulldown list in itunes.
At any rate, I'd love to know if there is a way to remove genres from the pulldown list on itunes, assuming that there are no songs listed under the genre that I want to delete.
It is my understanding that a couple of years ago, this was not possible. If that is still the case, does that apply to just the genre names that come in the list or also with genres that I added, but now want to delete?

  • When will there be a fix for the permissions problem in iTunes 11.1.1? I get a list of three or four-hundred when I run the repair program.

Likely someone does but Apple has not stated if/wehn.

Then don't use the repair program unless you are actually having an issue.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes.

  • Is there a way to change permissions on an external drive (formerly internal) other than "get info"?

The internal drive on my Macbook pro died recently, so I replaced it with an SSD and purchased an enclosure for the drive that was my former internal drive.  So far, I have been successful at retrieving some of the data, however, some of it will not copy over and seems to have permissions issues.  The "get info" route does not seem to be working.  The Privilege section is not greyed out, however, I still cannot adjust anything.  The lock is unlocked...
    Suggestions?
    Thanks!

Select the volume icon in the Finder and open the Info window. Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your administrator password when prompted. Check the box at the bottom marked
              Ignore ownership on this volume
    Close the Info window.

  • Problem changing information under "get info"?

I am using windows vista which I know has a lot of compatibility problems with itunes right now (including the fact that my ipod wont even work properly with it) but I'm not sure if this is causing the problem or not:
When I go into "get info" to change information about a song, its totally not working! when I try it for multiple songs at once, it looks like it will work (I can type the new name or whatever in) but then nothing happens/ the change doesnt save. For one song at a time, it wont even let me type in any of the fields! Help!

The Mac Mini and 3 NAS devices are all wired connections.  All connections are 100MB full duplex and do not have issues copying files to or from the NAS devices or Mac.  It is a home network with1 mac mini wired, 3 NAS wired, 3 laptops (wireless with 2 of them rearley on), 2 Apple TVs wireless, and one Windows desktop wired in.
At the time of editing no movies or music is beign played and not other major network traffic is going on.
When iTunes locks up i get the pinwheel and can do nothing else in iTunes.  I have left it for over an hour with no change.

  • User Accounts Permissions Problem!

    Hi,
Have a new MacBook here with 2 user accounts on it. Both users are administrators. I tried copying a folder of files from the User A's desktop into the Drop Box of User B. That went fine. But when I logged out of User A's account and into User B's, User B could open the folder and files but couldn't change/write to them.
So, I tried changing the permissions of User B's home folder, by clicking Get Info. User B's home folder AND enclosed items are now:
    User A - Read & Write
    User B - Read & Write
    everyone - Read only
This solved the problem of modifying that folder and files that came from User A's account. However, now some new problems have emerged. For example, User B now can't trash widgets from their dashboard.
Have I done the wrong thing? What are you supposed to do so that BOTH users on the same computer automatically have the permission to read and write to files and folders they exchange with each other?

Open up a Terminal and type "ls -l /Users/" (without the quotation marks; the stroke means "ell" not "I" as in "I think, therefore I am"). The output should be a list containig a line similar to
    drwx------+ 31 <your user name> staff 1054 17 Mai 08:54 <your user name>
The important part is "drwx------" at the beginning. It informs you that it's a directory (d) and that the owner has (r)ead-, (w)rite- and e(x)ecute-access (the last meaning that you can change to that directory in a terminal using the cd command). The following lines indicate that neither the group "staff" nor anyone else has rwx-access. To grant full access to everybody the line would have to read "drwxrwxrwx". To change permissions in the terminal you can use the command chmod (for syntax help type "man chmod"). Let me know if that solved your question.

  • Can't Read/Write to External HDD-Permissions Problem

I have external Seagate HDD, formatted as FAT32, connected to Airport Extreme Base Station. I am unable to Read/Write to this Drive because Finder says I "Don't have permissions" to do so.
Following are details that may be important:
    1. I was able to read/write to this drive under Leopard but lost the right under Snow Leopard, after upgrade to SL.
    2. In Airport Utility, I set up (2) accounts for the External HDD, "Dad" with "Read/Write" access and "Mom" with "Read" access only. I have Guest Account privileges set to "Read Only". It has been this way for (2) years.
    3. Under "Get Info" in Finder, the only account listed is "everyone" with "read" permission only (this is same as Guest Acount in Airport Utility). I am unable to add new accounts because I get error message "The account name is not valid" even though I am using the account name that I am logged in under.
    4. I can change the Permissions on the "everyone" account (in Finder) by changing the permissions on the "Guest Account" in Airport Utility. When I do this, "everyone" in Finder now has "read/write" access but my two accounts, "Dad" and "Mom still don't show up in Finder.
    5. I also upgraded internal HDD to 1Tb and used Restore from Time Machine. I hhad problems with the restore and did new install of Snow Leopard.
Any ideas on how to make Finder show the two accounts I have set up in Airport Utility?

My apologies for bumping this but I still don't have a solution...any help would be greatly appreciated!
