Locked partition that won't unlock

a friend of mine who works for a school system got an ibook provided by the school. it came with two partitions, the first has the OS on it and is fine. the second appears in the finder with a lock superimposed on the disk icon. i can view the contents and it appears the partition is owned by system. if i try to copy something to that partition, it asks for authentication, and after entering the password it gives an error 120 and says that i don't have permission to finish the operation.
he is the only user in the accounts window and is an administrator. i ran verify permissions on the first partition, but it woudl not let me do repair permissions on the second partition.
any way to unlock the partition?

John,
The "root" account is not needed for troubleshooting or fixing this problem.
First, let's determine that we should be doing anything with this partition. What is currently on it, and how much disk space does it represent? Open a Getinfo window for it and look at the "capacity" and "available" figres for disk space. We need to determine whether or not the school district has locked this partition for a specific reason, keeping in mind that your friend does not own this computer.

  • My iPhone is locked to a Carrier that won't unlock it for me :(

    The carrier (Meteor in Ireland) said they currently have no unlock codes for the iPhone 4, to contact Apple, but the website is so confusing!! Please help!
    When I bought the phone they assured me it would work when I moved to New Zealand but it didn't.
    After 3 months of emailing them & getting passed around several departments & getting the same answer, same wrong answer 5 or 6 times they eventually told me they currently can't unlock it.
    I took ou an 18 month contract because I was told by the guy in the shop there network had romaing in NZ but they don't Please anybody I'd appericate it so so so much

    Only the carrier to whom the device is locked can authorize it's unlocking.  Apple will not unlock the device for any customer, only at the request of the carrier.
    If the carrier cannot/will not/ or simly is being difficult about unlocking the device, there is no official way around it.

  • Locked now it won't unlock!!

    Everytime I lock my iPod it won't unlock.
    The only time it will unlock if I reset it.
    A couple a days it got wet (I waited 5 days) and now it's play music fine but that's the only problem. I already resetted it using iTunes and still it's like that. Is it cuz my iPod got wet??

    Yes it is. How long did you let it dry before you tried to use it?

  • Number lock key (F6) won't unlock

    I don't remember pressing this key down, but it is locked and the green light is on...and I can't unlock it no matter how many times I push it or hold it down. So, the keyboard will only type numbers right now
    I tried rebooting, but it didn't reset.
    I also tried going to preferences and resetting the keyboard to default, but that didn't work either.
    This is basically the first problem I've had with the computer in 3.5 years.
    Any suggestions on how to 'unlock' the number lock?

    Hi, Rachel, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
    A Num Lock light that stays lit is sometimes a symptom of a deeper problem. Try resetting your Powerbook's Power Management Unit. Does that help? If not, run the Apple Hardware Test from your Powerbook's original Install & Restore DVD, and let us know what AHT reports.

  • How to fix Boot Camp partition that won't boot

    Soooo...coming new to this thread, after reading of it on NERDR.COM.
    Have new iMac 27" and have been TRYING to load and use Win 8.1 Enterprise (MSDN) on BootCamp in Mavericks 10.9.3.
    Could not even get setup to load until after I removed my three external G-Drives, finally got it to load, and actually got Windows pretty much configured and activated, and loaded Office 2013 and VISIO. But, I have an increasing number of BSOD (I assume it is) issues with kernel_security_check_failure which stop the computer, nothing works, and I have to power off.  This has caused drive issues, and while I've been repairing them, I can no longer boot into Windows.  Tried repairing that with the original Win 8.1 DVD, but, Automatic Repair can't fix, and I was unsure if using BootRec was a good idea?
    So ran the three SUDO commands on my Drive 0, and here are the results (had to paste a screen shot, as, SOMETHING in the middle (blue) text won't allow me to post it):
    Question is, should I go ahead and use the gdisk utility to repair things, or...something else?
    And...if there is some kind of issue with using Boot Camp when you have external drives attached, what can be done to get around that?
    Thanks!

    The fdisk output shows that it is a single GPT disk. Has any disk manipulation been done, like resizing or repartitioning.
    Your GPT looks correct. If you create a Hybrid MBR via gdisk and include partitions 2,3 and 4 and make 4 bootable, does Windows partition show up in Startup and as a separate volume in Finder?
    Please see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5641066 for Hybrid MBR creation.

  • Unlocking items that won't unlock

    I can't unlock a .WAV item on my desktop! I think its a sound clip from a camera. When the info is brought up the lock option is ticked but I cant untick it as its not highlighted. Any solutions?
    Thank you. You help would be greatly apprecited!

    Well, normally a folder on the desktop should be unlocked. It says something is wrong with your permissions, or some background application is running that has assumed ownership of the files. To force all such applications not to be running restart the Mac holding the SHIFT key. Also try repairing permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility -> select hard drive in Disk Utility's window and select First Aid.
    If after repairing permissions you can't at minimum send the file to the trashcan, and rebooting with the SHIFT key held down doesn't help allowing you to move the file to the trash, then:
    1. Backup your data*
    - 2. Remove any network connection.
    3. Dismount and physically disconnect any data devices that are not boot devices (drag their icon to the trash).
    4. Open Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    5. Type at the terminal window WITHOUT hitting any return key:
    sudo rm
    5. Drag an offending file into the terminal window. You can do with this folders too, but additional commands and risk needs to be assumed. Make sure there is a SINGLE space between the file path and the word "rm" by using the left/right arrow keys to navigate the cursor. Put the curser immediately after the path of the file with no spaces after the end of the path. Hit return.
    This will force delete the file once you enter your administrator password.
    Do this for each offending file.

  • Erasing a drive with a locked partition

    I have a drive with a locked partition. I can unlock it no problem, but I would now like to erase the whole drive and repartition with only one partition before I pass the computer on to someone else. Does anyone know how to reset the drive to a single unlocked partition. Thanks very much.
    All the best,
    Tom

    Tom,
    What happens if you boot from an installer disc? How did you "lock" the drive? Do you know how to "unlock" it? Did you unlock it first? Is this your startup volume on the internal drive or is it an external drive?
    If this is a startup drive and you are running Lion or Mountain Lion, and if you want to erase the drive, repartition, and reinstall Lion or Mountain Lion
    Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
    Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
          left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
            the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
          the Erase button and wait until the process has completed. Now select
          the second partition, click on the Delete [-] button. Grab the sizing handle
          in the lower right corner of the remaining volume and drag it to the bottom
          of the rectangle. Click on the Apply button.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
                because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Volumn that won't mount or repair

    When copying a folder from one volume to another the mac froze.
    Had to turn it off to get it to do anything again.
    When it restarted one of my main volumes did not mount.
    When I ran disk utility on that volume it ended with an error
    and a line that said it has an "Invalid sibling link"and it will
    not repeir that volume due to an error.
    HELP!
    How do I fix this to get this volume mounted again?

    Can you boot to the OS install disk? Does the Disk Utility (from the Utilities menu of the Install disk) see the partition?
    If DU sees the partition, try "Repair Disk". If errors are returned, but repair cannot be completed, try again. I would try 3-4 times.
    If, after 3-4 tries, DU still reports the device/volume cannot be repaired, then your best hope is to use DiskWarrior.
    There is one other option, and that is to use Terminal, and get the path to the partition that won't mount. Once this is known, fsck can be used to run repair on the partition. It is a bit involved, but if you a willing to try, use this guide to perform the task.
    Specific to the invalid sibling link error, instead of "-y" use "-r". This article explains.

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
  • How do I fix my animation presets for text that won't load? It seems to get locked in loop and I am forced close Adobe Bridge.
    How do I fix my animation presets for text that won't load? It seems to get locked in a loop when I click on one and I am forced to "fore close" Adobe bridge which After Effects uses to locate the presets. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
    What is your exact workflow? The proper procedure is to select your text layer in AE, find the text preset you want to use, then drag or double click that preset to apply it to your project.
    It also helps  if we know your version of AE and OS down to the decimal point. You didn't give us much to go on.
  • HT4623 I have never had a passcode to lock  my iPad. Now that I have updated it with IOS7 it is asking for one and is locked. How do I unlock this without having to reset the whole thing through iTunes????
    I have never had a passcode to lock  my iPad. Now that I have updated it with IOS7 it is asking for one and is locked. How do I unlock this without having to reset the whole thing through iTunes????
    Unfortunately, if the iPad is insisting that you use a passcode, there is no way around it other than to restore the device using iTunes on a computer, or by erasing it in iCloud.com via Find My iPhone.
    You could try resetting the iPad and cross your fingers and hope this is just a blip on the radar....hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
    Something may have corrupted your User account permissions. Whatever it was that did that is likely to do it again, and will require further investigation.
    To reset your User account permissions perform the following. It may not fix the problem but it will not make it any worse:
    Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac.
    When the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities > Terminal.
    In the Terminal window type resetpassword and press Enter. A window will open behind Terminal that looks like this:
    Do not enter a new password.
    Select your startup volume at the top. From the dropdown below it, select the user account with the problem.
    At the bottom of the window, you will see Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs.
    Click the Reset button.
    Quit Reset Password
    Quit Terminal
    Quit OS X Utilities and restart your Mac.
    Back up your system before doing anything else because disk corruption is another possibility that has to be considered.
    How can I unlock an IPod with a locked screen that says Will open in 21,889,406 minutes? It was in our companies lost and found a couple years ago. Was never claimed. If I could unlock it, I could possible find out whose it is/was or at least use it. Not sure what model or what operating system it has. Was lost in 2010 in the fall of that year.
    You would need to go to an Apple Store (make an appointment) and take the phone, her father's original invoice when the phone was purchased, and a copy of his death certificate. Only with these will Apple unlock it. If you can't get these, the phone is permanently unusable.
