Locked topics, etc.

I created a topic in "Using Mac OS X" earlier this week, and found it locked. What exactly does "locked" means? (Other than that you can't post replies).
Also, sometime after I initially posted, I got the following message added to my origianl post:

Anyone know what this is? I have no clue since my topic was a new one.

Threads that wander off-topic or morph into unrelated conversations are often locked. Bear in mind that Discussions are dedicated to technical problems and solutions. The message about locking your thread implied this. Don't worry about this. It happens frequently.

Archived vs Locked topics?

Hello all,
Did I miss something? I hadn't seen this before and was wondering if this is a new feature here in Discussions.
I came across this topic and this was the first time I had come across this.
Why is the topic archived and not just locked? What is the difference (in reference to this topic)?

Ah, I didn't know that. I don't think the OP understands either if they are asking for further comment to the topic. That's what confused me.
Is there a purpose for being able to reply to the archived topic by the OP? I mean what reason/s would an OP have for replying to an archived topic? I guess they might post back with a solution to the old problem or such? I was just thrown by the fact that this particular OP posted back with a further query about their original topic if no one else is able to respond.

PS. It's confusing without an indication in the topics list (such as the lock icon does for locked topics). I as a user, just go to the topic, and start reading and then try to reply (not even noticing the heading at the top of the thread that it is an archived topic). All I saw was no reply icon on the posts.

Animated gifs -- broken feature; locked topic

Hey -- what gives?
Why is the main discussion in this forum of Mail's baffling inability to send an animated gif file been locked, with no further replies allowed?
Is Apple so embarrassed at the absurdity of this simple feature being broken for so long that it can't bear to see any further discussion of the matter?
I wanted to post that not even the "append selected file" workaround suggested within that thread worked on my machine (with the current 10.4.7 OS), and ask if any other users had any other suggestions. I also wanted to join the chorus of users who are saying: yes, this broken feature is a small thing -- which is precisely why Apple should have fixed it long ago.
Meantime -- any user suggestions for what should be a simple, straightforward procedure?

That thread certainly drifted off topic: it was not about sending animated GIF's in the first place but about receiving them in viewable form in Mail. The answer effectively was given: the feature apparently doesn't work for anyone, so it is currently broken. The remainder of the pots went off in several directions: how to send one, why would Apple break or not repair the view feature, when would they fix it, even some conjecture about philosophical reasons for & against having the feature at all.
Some of these things are off limits for Apple Discussions because the terms of use prohibit them, others are threadjacks. As the moderator suggested, start a new post for "your issue" -- which still has to follow the terms, including not speculating on Apple policy or when a feature will be added/restored to its products.
You topic & the subjects that you wanted to address in the locked one are only partially admissible under these terms. I suggest you steer clear of policy issues here & use there forums to determine if an issue is known or if a fix exists. Feature requests should instead be directed to Apple Feedback, conjecture to web sites & forums that allow or encourage that.
For the technical aspects of your issue, it would help if you would outline what you have tried & how you have tested it.

Lock ups, etc.

I have had my first generation IPod for about 1 1/4 yrs. Just recently it has started acting up frequently and requiring me to reset several times daily and eventually leading to a restore at least once a week (getting the 'you must restore IPod' message). By acting up, it does several different things: locks up between songs, screen goes blank, screen gets crazy (starts fading, or shows everything backwards).
I saw something in a post about restoring it in disk mode and how that might do better than a regular restore because it updates the firmware? I got it in disk mode, but what next? What's the difference between doing the restore normally and in disk mode? Do you still use ITunes?
Any help with this or any other suggestions on how to keep an aging IPod going is much appreciated.

i suggest you call apple and take it in to have it repaired, it could be a corrupt hard drive, and fixing it usually costs fifty bucks, so give apple a call. they should be able to help you.

After Hotsynching a Palm Treo 680, its Hotsynch stuck in loop, lock ups, etc.

My father is having problem with his Palm Treo 680 (unlocked). Before the incident, he Hotsynched between his Treo and his Dell Optiplex machine (Windows 2000 SP4 with all updates; USB connection).
The PDA went stuck in a Hotsynch screen on the PDA even if it is disconnected and hard resetted (battery removal since there is no hole). Eventually, the issue stopped (don't know what he did). However, there are still random lock ups and the looping Hotsynch again (no specific times and patterns). Also removing the extra memory cards didn't help either. Also, he reported that his phone didsn't ring either from incoming calls.
Does anyone know what's going on? Is the PDA dying since he uses it daily all almost all day when he is awake? His warranty expired already, he said. It seems like a lot of people had problems from my Google searches.

TS4006 Find My Phone... send sound, message, lock or erase? All I get on the site, and the app is the map. My issue is "How To" send sound, lock, erase, etc

How do I send a sound? Lock? Erase? On iCloud web site Find My Phone link there is only the map. No links or any other instruction. Please tell me where to find this information. If I lose my phone I need to be able to use my computer to go to iCloud.com and use these features not just locate it on the map.

Just my $0.02 worth - relying on remote tracking to lock an iPhone after it goes missing is completely false security. The time to put the passcode lock into effect is now, while you have control of the devie. Once it is gone, by the time you log in and try to lock it, it may be far too late and someone will have had complete access to your device and all its content for some time.
According to the FBI, one of the greatest reasons for growing smartphone theft is identity theft and the content on the device, since theives know that statistically, most smartphones are not secured at all - wide open to them the minute they get their hands on them. So, then they steal your identity, sell or use it, and sell or use your iPhone. Doubly good payday for them.

i have to use and what inputs i have to pass. I already checked with "COM_PRODUCT_MAINTAIN_STATUS" it is not working properly.

Hi,
Its good that u pasted the complete log file. In your environment you have to run this upgrade tool only once from any of the middle tier.
And with respect to your error that u got in precheck is quite simple. All u have to do is just run this script from by connecting to portal schema using sqlplus.
Run dropupg.sql
Location-------- /raid/product/OraHome_1/upgrade/temp/portal/prechktmp/dropupg.sql
Later you re-run the upgrade tool and let me know the status.

Spinning wheel, freezing often, locking up, etc...

To start I work in a K-12 School System and we use AppleWorks for our K-8 students. We are experiencing some pretty consistant issue with AppleWorks.
My machines are Mac Minis running 10.3.9, AppleWorks 6.2.9 and a managed student account. They can not open certain applications, but they have full ability to save and all that.
Our issues are not strange at all, since AppleWorks is a carbon-based app and runs in OS 9 and OS X. But, they are getting progessively more and more consistant.
If a user is working normally and just typing a document, it is fine, but then the next user comes into the computer lab (30 machines) and uses either spreadsheet, db or word processor and when appleworks launches it will lock up, and spinning wheel of death until we need to FORCE QUIT.
After force quitting allows us to get out of the issues, we run a applescript that i wrote which deletes (recursively and forcefully) the following
~/Documents/AppleWorks \User\ Data
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.appleworks.plist
~/Library/Preferences/Appleworks/
It seems to be fine for the next user, the BOOM, the user after that, same thing!!
Does anyone have any similar issues? Have you had issues before like this? what solves this? ANYTHING??
I've called Apple about it and the answer was there is no answer. This has been going on for a year and right now it is WAY OUT OF CONTROL!.

cm752004 has given the answer, although sometimes a full AutoSave folder can also be a problem. This is the most complained about bug in AppleWorks 6 - known as the "Recent Items bug." There are three articles in the User Tips Library dealing with Recent Items. Since you already are using an AppleScript to delete preferences, you might want to use one of the AppleScripts written by Dale or Yvan that they mention in their user tips.

Since I installed the latest version of Firefox, my Google search system has forgotten about my past entries and is not adding on each search topic etc as I search. Is this a GOOGLE or a Firefox issue?

Example. I searched for NYT.COM. In past the system remembers and when I start typing ny it immediately fills in nyt.com and other options related to nyt.

Have just upgraded to Lion. In all applications a box now appears that encloses topics, etc on the screen. It is a problem as it also randomly moves around the screen. Have no idea what the purpose is and want to get rid of it. Scroll does not work.

Just upgraded to Lion. Scroll does not respond. Have tried altering preferences. Will not fix. In all applications, including this page, a box appears and seems to randomly move around the screen, resting wherever I begin to work. How can I turn this off and get scroll to work normally?

Ipad Screen Black but can still hear locking sounds etc.

i just got my ipad today,and i was playing a game then right in the middle of it the screen goes black but looks like its shut down ive tried everything to get it to come on an nothing. i dont know if the screen has went out or what. any suggestions on how to fix this problem? and i purchased it somewhere they don't take returns. so please someone help.

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank power On again in the normal way.] It is absolutely/appsolutely safe!

My Topic Got Locked, what does THiS mean ?

_Well, I never intended to incite a scene or a scandal, but my topic from this morning has been locked, and that's not explained in Terms of Use, the glossary, or AnYwhere.

The Moderators generally lock topics when the topic either:
• Drifts off-topic for more than a couple of posts, i.e. goes off on an unrelated tangent.
• Begins as, or becomes, a chat or a rant.
• Does not pertain to a specific technical issue of the type addressed by the Discussion in question. For example, asking why a topic was locked (a question about using the Discussions) in a Discussion concerning "Using Tiger" (a forum for technical questions related to using Mac OS X 10.4).
• Turns into a flame war or otherwise becomes "toxic" or violates the Terms of Use.
I appreciate your position, but it's best not to question these decisions. Generally, having one topic locked for non-toxic reasons won't result in you losing your posting privileges, but making a habit of authoring or causing topics to be locked can result in one being banned. Flagrant violations of the Terms of Use can result in an immediate ban.
FYI: In the future, I recommend posting questions about using the Discussions — such as why your topic was locked or other issues concerning Discussions policy or terms of use — to the Discussions Feedback Discussion. That's the right place for questions about the Discussions themselves.

I'm in Safari, and can do a search,but the bottom half of my screen won't move and I can't tap on any of the results, it appears to be locked, what do I do to fix?

I'm in Safari and the ribbon at the top is bright and I can do a search, but the remainder of the screen is highlighted and I can't move around in Safari or select a topic etc, it appears to be locked. Does anyone know how to fix?

Tap Settings / Safari. Clear the History, Cookies, & Cache.

MSI HD6950 Frozr III 2gb screen lock up

Hi I'm asking for help before I have to return my MSI HD6950 Frozr III 2 GB graphics card.
I Have a self built system that comprises of the following: ASUS M4A88 T-M motherboard
AMD Phenom 955 Black Edition Quad Core Processor (not overclocked)
8 Gigs of Corsair 1600 RAM - Windows 7 64 Bit all windows updates
750 watt Antec PSU
1 TB Samsung F1 Hard Drive
(Had 1 GB Nvidia GTS450 - the system has run beautifully since I built it in August, no crashes, lock ups etc)
Bought the beautiful HD6950 and installed it ok, installed the latest Catalyst 11.10 drivers, it ran ok for a short period of time, but then in games it started to lock up, this resulted in a beige coloured screen with very thin vertival dark lines, could not CNTL/ALT/DEL out of it, had to reset. Windows then will not run up normally, so I have to try safe mode. Safe mode comes up, but attempting to system restore ends in failure and after applying all the saved data it sits there with a blank screen. This then results in reset and safe mode yet again.
I have been on AMD's website but this just results in dozens of possibilities dating back 3 or 4 years. One of the moderators suggested your site as it is MSI equipment and thought it more useful in attempting to find a fix for this issue.
I have while in safe mode deinstalled the graphics card and relaunched the system, Windows will then come back up again using windows generic drivers, I then re-install the latest Drivers from AMD's site, and when prompted to I restart the system, this then sends me back into the cycle of failing to load up Windows yet again. And has gone on like this for several days now, I have done loads of suggested things to attempt a fix, all to no avail, Virus checked, even bought a new PSU in case my old 550 watt unit was lacking power, I have reseated all RAM and checked my RAM in windows, reconnected all power cables, reseated my graphics card, all to no avail.
I was now starting to doubt my system, so in desperation, I deinstalled the HD6950 and put back in my GTS450, what a difference, the system is stable and a joy, its how I was expecting the system to behave with the HD6950 in, obviously I would ideally like the extra graphics clout of the HD6950 in but I'll settle for stable and rock solid instead. One clue I may have is I noticed that it tended to lock up when the GPU's fan increased in speed, from its low and quiet mode of operation. Please help as I want to give you 6950 the best possible chance, but I cant go on with it like this.....
