Locked up with apple only on the screen, no reset happening, only apple!!!

In mexico on vacation and have limited access to wifi, as i was changing my settings to get off the free wifi i saw a software update and clicked on it. it started the update but in the same time the wifi turned to no service with an apple on the screen. now my phone only has an apple on the screen and won´t reset or go to home screen. i desperately need the phone for camera and i am not getting a response from verizon after emailing them. i cant call them due to charges and also phone wont work. does anyone the trick to get it back to home screen? i have held the top button and circle at the same time but it only turns the phone off then turning it back on only shows the apple. its like it is stuck in a download but without the wifi on it cant finish it and is locked up!
please someone out there please help!

I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to have a frozen phone on vacation. Let's get this fixed so you can get back to enjoying your vacation.

Please use the reset through iTunes and retest.

I try to get log on to the itunes store, says accessing store that the screen goes white and only the apple symbols is in the top box...nothing else...WHY

okay i have been trying to access the itunes store from my computer and after i click the tab the words accessing itunes store scroll across screen the the screens goes white and only the apple symbols is in the box.....WHY. Is the store down??

You will probably need to restore using Recovery Mode. You can read about it here.

Or you can follow these Recovery Mode Instructions
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPad, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for iPad to turn off.
If you cannot turn off iPad using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the iPad turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPad. When you reconnect the USB cable, iPad should power on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the recovery mode alert that iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore iPad.

Just a thought, but maybe consider returning the device. Seems it might be a bit too complicated for you.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I had the same thing that my iphone 3gs jammed with the loge on the screen. None of the buttons responded. I just waited till the battery was empty. But the battery wasn't laoding. I waited 48h while my iphone was plugged in. After the 48 hours he just started. The battery was still empty but it started loading.

I am only seeing an Apple logo on the screen even after restarting.

So, my son usually is watching netflix on his AppleTV and comes to tell me from time to time that Netflix isn't playing the videos since the beginning. We unplug or reset and everything is fine. Also if my TV goes to standby from inactivity after the AppleTV turns off, turing the AppleTV on wake up the TV. Well lately when the TV wakes up, it doesn't see anything from the AppleTV. Tonight my son comes out to tell me all he sees is the apple logo on the screen. I think it is updateing, nope. I do everything from unplugging and reset. Nothing helps. I unplugged for a while to cool it off, no help. I am kind of mad that I hadn't looked up the warranty earlier cause it expired 8 days ago. The reason I didn't really think there was too much of a problem when it wasn't showing picture a few times, is because I have had kind of problems with it before due to software issures. So, is this the "apple of death" sign?

Are you near an Apple store? If so make a Genus appointment and take it in.
If you have a micro USB to USB cable you could connect it to your computer to see if iTunes sees it.

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

Sounds like you have corrupt backup data, if this occurs from one phone to another. Try restoring the phone as a new device, without a backup. Try using for a day before installing any other apps, etc. See if that improves the battery life. Then try syncing back applications a couple at a time. Something seems to be locking in the processor which is draining the battery.
Do you live in an area where there are Apple Stores? If so, try making an appointment with the Genius Bar to have the device checked out.

The unit has full WiFi access with no problems, I can access ITunes on my laptop via home sharing no problem.

Reading through the threads my take is
There seems to be something awry with wifi chipset. Typical symptoms are initially being able to connect to connect to a Wifi network then the connection is dropped. Then you see just the 'computers' and 'settings' icons on screen
Power off, reset and factory restore doesnt seem to solve it
Occasionally its nearby antenna cables etc causing interference
One report with convincing evidence it was the HDMI cable, swapping to anotehr cable fixed the problem
Plugging in ethernet works, this is purely a wifi issue
Sometimes plugging in ethernet temporararily wakes up the wifi
Many people seem to have exchanged their units only for the same thing to happen to the new unit a few weeks later. Just wondering if its a fomponent fail or heat issue.

There's a bug with the wallpaper. One thing that helps a bit, go to the photos app, find your pic, 'send' it to be wallpaper. You have a bit more control although not all the function you're used to.
No idea when or if Apple will fix it.
