Locking a folder

my iWeb site files are on my iDisk in my Public folder. i want to keep my files and folders as safe as possible without password protecting the site. would it help to lock the folders? i'm thinking it might help because that way when someone follows the path they see in their browser, they can see what my folder is called, but they can't view the folder's contents or access the files directly. do i have this right? if so, how do i go about locking individual folders without locking the whole site?

OMG i can't believe it's that simple! thank you. ok one more question - some of my files are banner ads that require both an html file and a swf to play. from public this works because i can link to the html file and have the swf in the same folder and the files find each other. but when i link to a file the way you described, i link to the html, and the only way to get the swf in the same folder on web/sites is to put it there manually. this won't work in the long run because every time i republish the site, all the files placed in web/sites manually that aren't directly linked to something in the site vanish. is there a workaround - where i can have the swfs in there along with the html files?
Don't put them in Public then, put them in the "Sites" folder in your iDisk. The link will be homepage.mac.com/username/filename

You can't. The OS doesn't support password protecting files and folders. The encrypted disk image route is superior to what you want to do. Why don't you?

  • How To: Lock a folder to prevent it being deleted but still access it?

How can I lock a folder to prevent it from being moved or trashed but still have access to move/add folders within that folder?
The scenario is that we have a daily jobs folder and a final jobs folder. The daily jobs folder was accidently moved into an active job folder. I want these folders locked down so this cannot happen but when I use the lock feature nothing can be moved in or out of that folder.
Under OS9 the locked box specifically said "cannot move, rename or delete this item" yet you could add or delete items to that folder all day long.
If I try this with OSX I need to authenticate each bloody time! I just want to lock a folder down and have it accessable by anyone, anywhere, anytime without the need to type a password 80 times a day. HELP ME PLEEZE
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Read only access will prevent the addition or removal of items in the folder you set the permissions on; the folders below that one have different access settings, which can be less restrictive than those for the folder you set it on.
For example, if folder A contains B and C, and B allows Read & Write access but A allows Read Only access, items can be added and removed from B, but B itself cannot be moved out of A, and other items cannot be moved in to or out of A. If a folder your account has Read access to is inside a folder which your account doesn't, you can use the Finder's Go to Folder command in the Go menu to navigate to it if its path is known.

  • How to lock a folder with password ?

Please tell me how to lock a folder with password (to keep personal files)

Keep looking it can be done. I have a folder on my hard drive that requires a password everytime I try to open it. I found how to do this in an old "Mac OS - The missing manual" but don't remember off the top of my head how I did it. I remember you have to partition a portion of the hard drive, I think I did like 10 Gig of my 1 Teribite external drive and then you give it a name and make up a password. The password is NOT changeable and if you lose it you can't get back in that folder. It appears as a standard folder but needs a password to open it.
Email me direct if you can't find any info and I will try to look it up - [email protected]

  • Can I lock a folder so that I cannot rename it

Hi everyboy, can I lock af folder so that I cnnot rename it, but still can edit and create files within it?
The problem being that I keep changing the name of a dropbox folder, which then needs to sync again.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rasmus Henriksen

Copy and paste this command in the Terminal and leave a space after it.
Then, drag your folder onto the Terminal window.  It will expand the path out for that folder. Hit return.
    chmod +a "group:everyone deny delete"
This will add the Access Control Entry that prevents anyone from deleting the folder, which also prevents renaming. It will still go to the rename mode, but will require you to authenticate to complete the rename.

  • How do we lock a folder in documents so it opens with password?

How de we lock a folder in documents so it can only be open with a password?

The short answer is, you don't. Your account belongs to you and is passworded. In theory if you want to keep things secure you log out or shut down. Or in the Security tab of System Preferences set the computer to require a password after waking up and put the computer to sleep.
However I understand that sometimes the most convenient thing is to password a folder - which we cannot do. But what we can do is create an encrypted disk image using Disk Utility (it is in the Utilities folder). It may not be quite as convenient as a passworded folder but it works quite nicely.

  • Locked Music Folder/Disk/No Permission

My itunes recently froze and wouldn't respond to the Force Quit command. I logged everyone off of the computer, including myself, and logged back in. Itunes had been shut down during the log off. I tried to start it back up again to see what the problem had been only to receive an error saying that I either had a locked music folder, the folder was on a locked disk, or I didn't have permission to use the music folder. The whole program shuts down when you press the "Cancel" button (the only button available to press)
How on Earth do I fix this problem? I have no idea how anything was locked seeing as I didn't lock anything and the other users on the computer don't know how to lock a folder or disk. I don't know how I couldn't have permission since none of my admin powers have been changed since we first bought the computer and i've never run into this problem before.

Not sure what you mean by a locked System Folder.
If you changed the permissions for it, you may want to repair your permissions.

Depending on what "lock" means, one (very messy) solution might be to open every file in the directory for writing. That would keep people from mucking with the files, at least. Note that I don't think this is a good idea... and you can still create new files.

No it isn't possible, you can only lock your entire phone by setting up a four digit passcode.

  • Can I Lock a Folder?

Hi, I have a Folder on my desktop with some Microsoft Word documents in it, I would like to lock the Folder with a pasword. I wondered if this can be done?
Thank you for your help in advance.
    Glenn

    Hi Glenn,
Another method for you to consider is creating a blank image that is password protected and store all your sensitive documents/folders within the image. You can achieve this with Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder). Do the following:
    1. Fire up Disk Utility
    2. From the menubar select File->New->Blank Disk Image...
    3. A New Blank Image window will appear where you can enter a name for the image and select what size you want it to be.
    4. Once you have entered a name and made your selections from the drop down menus click on the Create button.
    5. After a couple of seconds a Authenticate window appears. This is where you enter a Password for accessing the image. Click OK.
    6. The image is created and mounted on to your desktop.
That's it. Simply copy the files to the mounted image. Whenever you want to access those files simply double click the .dmg file; you will be asked to enter your password, the image will mount and you have access to your files.
One thing to remember. Never forget your password. If you do forget, you will not be able to access your files.

  • IPod nano locked with folder and exclamation

I have received today a new iPod nano and it has worked just for an hour. In the middle of a transfer from my pc it got locked. I tried everything but to no avail. It doesn't reset pressing select and menu and it doesn't restore with iPod updater, because it cannot write to it. All I see is the folder with an exclamation mark and the support page ("www.apple.com/support/ipod"). So I am lost.
    Any help?

If you put it in disk mode, then try connecting to the computer and restoring.

  • Is there a way to prevent or "lock" a folder from being copied on a mac?

I am Copying over a few folders to a friend of mine and I would like to "lock" out the folder to prevent him from giving out and sharing the contents of that folder. Is there any way to make that happen? Maybe something that will "require" a password when you want to copy the folder?
Creating an encrypted .dmg is not an option.

If I were to create an ecrypted .DMG the folder will not automatically show up. I would have to give him the password which would defeat the purpose. unless i can encrypt it and make it read only?
I tried to lock out the folder but it will not lock.
Im a DJ and I Sold him/traded alot of my personal video and audio remixes I've made and I would not want him to give them out to other DJ's in the area. That's basically my biggest concern.
