Locking Aperture Setting in Movie Mode - Canon T4i

I recently bought a T4i to use for shooting short videos, some of which will require me to zoom in during filming. I noticed that if the scene is properly exposed and I zoom in, the image becomes darker. This is not much of a problem sinceonly a short amount of footage will be seen before the zoom starts, so I can just expose the image so that it looks fine after the zoom.
The issue is the when I zoom in, I noticed the camera is automatically adjusting the aperture. I'm using the Manual mode, not Shutter Speed Priority. The ISO doesn't change and the Shutter Speed doesn't change, so why is it compensating by adjusting the aperture? Is there any way to lock the aperture setting in Manual mode? Is there is an auto compensation feature that needs to be turned off? As far as I can tell, Scene Intelligent Auto is off, as is the Auto Lighting Optimizer. What am I missing?

This depends on the f-stop and lens being used.
You didn't mention which lens, but the "kit" lens that comes with the camera (if you buy the camera as a kit) is the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6.
A lens normally lists it's WIDEST possible aperture, but notice that the focal ratio for this lens (f/3.5-5.6) is listed as a range.
This means that the widest possible focal ratio is variable and depends on the focal length. At the 18mm end, the lens is able to provide an f/3.5 focal ratio. But as you zoom in, this ratio increases to f/5.6.
If are using a low focal ratio such as f/3.5, then yes... the focal ratio will increase and the image will get darker as you zoom in. That's the physics of the lens. There are better lenses such as the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. That lens is able to provide an f/2.8 focal ratio (which is even brighter) and can do so at all focal lengths. The f/2.8 focal ratio collects considerably more light (the lens is physically larger).
If you set the aperture on your variable focal length lens to the higher f-stop in the range (e.g. f/5.6) then the lens CAN provide that focal ratio at all focal lengths... hence it will not get darker as you zoom... this assumes you have enough light.

If you are on the trial version (assuming this is CC7) drag a clip from the Project window into the New Item Icon (lower right bottom of the window)

Set Movie Mode

What distinguishes "Set Movie Mode" (in Marker List) from "Lock SMPTE Position"? I'm very curious about this!

there's a good technique for doing it in logic too, although it doesn't 'do it for you' like in DP. i wonder though...it's probably useful a lot of the time, but sometimes its good to keep things loose so that the first focus is music and natural tempi and tempi changes, then gradually tightening up hitting the cut with finer adjustments.
its what you used to i suppose. even if the feature was incorporated in logic i think i would still be working 'the old way' quite oftn. it would depend on the material too.

You can lock them to a Smpte time so yes they are useful.

Canon T5i - How would I turn continuous AF in movie mode? My current settings require me to push the shutter button to adjust focus. I can also push the video screen to adjust the focus point, but then I still have to push the shutter button. Thanks!

How can I best prevent from automatically refocusing during movie mode recording?

I believe my camera is automatically refocusing using the AF, and it's causing intermittent blurring within the playback.
The lens that I am using with the Canon EOS 70D is the EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM
When I playback the recording, I can physically see the actual camera adjusting focus automatically, and it causes a major distraction since spur of the moment blurring is involved and in each case, it's about 1 second long. I'm unsure what to do. It seems like it occurs during low-light conditions more (especially if the low-light is in the background).
Should I try increasing the IOS? I understand it goes up to 6400 for movie mode.
I shoot using a Manfrotto 504HD,546BK Video Tripod Kit with 504HD Head and 546 Tripod - Black. Some of the subjects are moving (camera is panning either while I am reporting or not moving as a stand-up reporter from a fixed location). I shoot both inside and outside.
I've tried using a Manual Focus before but I suffer the consequences when shooting outside as I don't get the best focus when trying to manually adjust the focus. Perhaps I should switch between MF, then AF and back to MF again to have the best possible picture, as switching it back to MF again would carry over exactly from the AF I would imagine without any needed adjustments if I'm already ready to shoot the target I setup for. I work in both high, medium and low light and the problem persists.
Please...any help would be greatly appreciated.

I should preface with stating that I don't shoot video, and as such my knowledge of the details on dSLRs when in video mode is limited. I'm making a lot of assumptions based off my use of them as still cameras.
When shooting stills, and not in live view mode, cameras have several autofocus points, some of which are more precise and have better low light capabilities than others. The center point is usually the best and many cameras have a center point that benefits from using a lens of 2.8 or faster. These points can lock focus in less light than a point rated at say 5.6. So your camera wouldn't be able to take full advantage of the 2.8 center point with the STM lens. That said, if the camera simply can't decide which subject to use as a focus point and is flipping back and forth then having a faster center point doesn't make a difference. Nor does it if you're using the outer points. Of course, I think this whole conversation is moot since I believe the camera is essentially in live view mode when shooting video which means it's using a completely different AF system (contrast detection). I just thought I'd mention it as a point of conversation. You can always try the 24-70 and see how it performs, but to your point, the STM lenses are designed for video.
Adjusting the ISO won't affect AF performance. So continue using the lowest ISO that you can get away with.
If I was in a situation where the camera was bouncing around AF and I didn't have external lighting, I would probably try to get the camera to set focus on my subject and then switch to manual. Short of that, I don't think there's much you can do.

T440s TouchPad - Tap and Drag - Where is the "locking drags" setting?

On my ThinkPad X220 TouchPad properties there is a Tap & Drap setting for Locking Drags (see below). When this is enabled you can tap twice on an item (and hold on second tap) to engage drag and then this will be locked until you tap again. The benefit of this is it is possible to use multiple discrete touchpad movements to move an item across the desktop without having to engage drag mode each time.

This feature is not specific to my X220. I find it on lots of laptops and I find it extremely useful.
However, on my T440s I can't find such a setting. Am I missing something?

I was looking for this setting too. It's extremely helpful when you need to select text. After googling around and finding little to no information I figured it out on my own. I grabbed my old laptop and compared the registry before and after checking the "locking drags" setting. All what you need to do is find the key:
HKU\S-1-5-21-*a-bunch-of-numbers*-1001\Software\Synaptics\SynTP\TouchPadPS2TM2668,
and change the value of "Gestures" from 3 to 7. There is another similar key named TouchPadSMB2cTM2668. I was lazy to find out what key will affect the setting so I changed the valuge of "Gestures" too. After that log out / log in again or restart. It works perfectly for me.

Enable Eye-Fi in Canon T4i

Dear Friends,
I have Canon T4i and purchased Toshiba Wireless Flash Air 32GB card for my T4i. I am not able to find 'Eye-Fi' settings in my camera, tried seraching for it in P mode while setting Image setting as Raw+L. However, Eye-fi settings is nowhere to be found.
Can somebody please help me in enabling Hidden Eye-fi setting in T4i, so that I can use Toshiba wireless Flash card, which would going to let me share picture wirelessly with my Laptop/Mobile.

The Toshiba works in ad-hoc mode in the camera and can transmit the files to a wifi enabled laptop.
Only a genuine Eye-Fi card will enable the features in the T4i.
All of the issues discussed above will apply.

Movie Mode in Markers Window.

Any one have any idea what Set Movie Mode/ReSet Movie Mode is and how it works. I can't find any documentation of it anywhere... How is it different than Lock Marker to SMPTE?

Locks the marker to SMPTE which is also what the lock marker to SMPTE function does. If you use the find cuts function to automatically find the cuts in movies the markers will default to this type.

What can you do with a Canon T4i? Look at this!

Here is an amazing scene of the Milky Way. It is shot entirely with a Canon T4i and a 10-22mm f3.5-4.5mm Canon lens. The lens was set at 10mm.
This was done by a good friend of mine that I worked with at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City for nearly 40 years. His name is Tom Martinez. He was a master of the darkroom not to mention a great photographer.
Since retirement he has devoted his time to astro-photography. He gives lectures and classes on how to do it. He has built over a dozen telescopes of different designs culminating with the 30” at our Powell Observatory near Warrensburg, Missouri.

Very nice job. It's so hard to find dark skies that can show the Milky Way anymore. I have to drive several hours to find a place with "ok" dark skies (not fantastic... but decent enough to see structure in the Milky Way.)
Even more amazing is that he managed to get three (mostly) cloudless nights in a row. That's something that hasn't happened for me all year -- not that I'm bitter about it or anything. ;-) (The weather in Michigan has _not_ be kind to us astronomers. Let's just say no parts on our telescopes are in any danger of wearing out due to excessive use.)
I appreciate that he put his exposure info at the end. Last year I used a 5D II and the EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM to take some Milky Way shots at the Great Lakes Star Gaze. I found I could take exposures up to about 45 seconds with no noticeable elongation of the stars. At about 1 minute I could see a tiny bit of elongation (stationary tripod... not tracking.) This year I have a 5D III and am looking forward to using that to do more imaging.

Itunes screen display seems locked. Scrolling only moves the bottom part of list, top of list doesn't move

Itunes music list displays but won't scroll the whole page. When scrolling throught the list, the bottom of part of the on screen list moves, but the top portion of the list says locked on the top part of the screen. (Example; Like in an excell program where you have locked cells that dont' move as you scroll through the rest of the cells)
Any ideas?

I get erratic loss of input capability into my Touch. On some days in the browser ,the W key doesn't work but the adjacent Q or E keys work just fine when I slide my finger back and forth. A few hours later, it works just fine. Last night I was entering a new location in the weather, the keyboard worked fine but after a search, it would not let me click on the new location to set it up. I could get a blue background but it would not click to complete the entry. Again, I tried it 20 min later and it worked just fine. Same thing on iTunes, there are occasions when the screen is unresponsive to my input and other times when it works just fine. I have one of those plastic covers sold at the Apple store to protect the screen and maybe that's the problem. However, recent rollerblade fall proved the worth of the protector as the cover was deeply scored but the screen was fine (was erratic before fall, not caused by fall). Touch is not jailbroken. Don't want to give up the protection film but I'm not sure whether there is a problem with my iTouch or just with my touch.

You might lose your place, but shouldnt be too hard to find it again...

Trouble importing from canon t4i into imove

So I have a canon t4i and I've been having trouble importing my videos from my memory card to imovie, and iphoto wont even let me upload it. I tried converting it to AVI (which took a few hours) and It's still not doing anything. I don't know what to do and it's really frustrating.

X-Fi with D PLII Movie Mode Speak

Hi,
I have an X-Fi soundcard (Fatalty one) and Logitech Z5500 speakers. They have several modes. When watching movies with a DTS soundtrack or a 5. soundtrack is it best to use the D PLII Movie mode or the 6 channel mode. I also have a mode for music D PLII Music mode. I don't really understand what the modes do and when they should be used or how I should get the X-Fi to decode DTS soundtracks. Help on this would be useful!

The Pro Logic II mode on your speakers is for two things:
) When you're connected in 6 channel mode and are playing back a stereo clip (which is probably Dolby Surround or PL II encoded) and need the speakers to upmix it to 5. channel audio.
2) When you've connected digitally (either via coax or optical SPDIF) and need to set it so that when a Dolby 2.0 or DTS 2.0 signal comes through it gets upmixed to 5. using positional cues in the audio.
Generally since you've got it in 6 channel direct mode, you shouldn't need to use PLII unless the video/audio software you're using doesn't have its own PL II decoder.
In 6 channel mode, the PL II option will cause the front two channels to be upmixed via PLII decoding into 5., ignoring the the other channels (surround, centre and sub).
