Locking data in oracle spatial

Is it possibile to define a priori some policies of oracle spatial data? Or does it depend only from sql statements used in custom applications? for example select for update, and so on...

General Database Discussions
To answer your question, you can lock rows any way you need to. I try not to ever lock rows, unless absolutly required (few and far between). If you are comming from another database you may find, after reading the above, that there is no need to create locks in Oracle to do the same thing as the other database.

Uploading bulk data in oracle spatial

Hi,
I need to upload a map data in (input is ESRI File geodatabase) in Oracle Spatial using ArcSDE.
I have Oracle spatial 10g, ArcGIS desktop 9.3. I am able to connect the oracle spatial data using arcsde and i am able to view those maps in arcmap. Also, i am able to upload small esri shape files in oracle spatial using esri arccatalog through arcsde.
I would like to know, the steps to be followed to upload a road network for North america (around 15gb) data as SDO. If there is any document available it will be more useful for me.

Yikes,
You won't require 150 gig of undo to load your data with ESRI tools. Noel might need to start a new thread to discuss that issue as his bulk loader may need some tuning. :p
All ESRI bulk loaders use a rather modest auto-commit. ArcCatalog is 1000 records and sdeimport is 2000 records by default. So after loading that many records the tool does a commit and thus avoids much undo at all. You can easily change this number to tune performance (higher for point data, lower for huge honkin' polygons) in the parameters.
At this point I would say the heck with all these torpedoes and give your load a try. You stated in the very first thread that you have loaded shapefiles successfully into Oracle Spatial so the assumption is you have your dbtune keywords setup and are all set with the issues of mapping ESRI coordinate systems into Oracle Spatial. So full steam ahead! Another idea would be to load a small subset of the data and make sure its correct to your needs before doing the whole thing. My opinion is I don't think you need to worry about the 15 gig size of the load. Yes it will take some time to do but I would bet whatever problems you run into are the same you would face with a 15 meg load.

Web map server - data in Oracle Spatial

We are searching for "web map server" which take data directly from Oracle Spatial (Locator). For this project the tools like ESRI ArcSDE, ArcIMS are too expensive. What are other product on the market? It should provide basic map navigation, spatial querying (klick on the map shows atribute data of features in active layers), serching by atributes.

If You are seeking for reference data for Asia, then You need to find it for every country. I doubt that exist for entire continent.
If You have Your own table and want to extend it with conty, street etc, You can use simple ALTER statement, like:
ALTER TABLE <table_name> ADD (
state VARCHAR2(25),
county VARCHAR(25)
);

Representing Smallworld network in Oracle Spatial

I'm trying to determine the network capabilities of Oracle Spatial. We are discussing whether it has equivalent capbilities as the Smallworld data model.
Is there currently a translator that can convert Smallworld data into Oracle Spatial, without loss of functionality.
Can anyone give me any info on this?

Oracle Spatial NDM is a means to persist graphs and perform graphical analysis like shortest path, minimum spanning tree etc.
It isn't an application or domain specific solution.
You would use NDM to build applications such as vehicle routing, trace out in an electrical network etc.
The NDM white paper on OTN describes this in further detail.

Hi,
It sounds like you are using Oracle Maps - i.e. the javascript API of Oracle MapViewer. In that case you are better off posting on the MapViewer forum:

As for looking for a development environment, JDeveloper is likely to be your best bet for integration, but that really depends on what type of application are you developing? Is it Oracle APEX? BI? ADF? .NET? etc.

Oracle spatial... how to begin...

I'm new to oracle spatial and for begining i want to make very simple database with spatial data, and map for that, but it seems to be problem. i have basic information how to insert lines, points, polygons but i don't what with that. I have installed mapviwer but i have problem to run demos. I have seen some examples on net, the sql's are very simple but below examples always i see very complicated maps. So question is how to start with oracle spatial, how to build simple database and map for that, where to begin with reading... Any information is welcome. may be is funny but i'm very confused with oracle spatial... :(

The best way to start is to
1) look at the documentation - for 10gR2 start http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/portal.portal_db?selected=1, click on 'Unstructured Data', select "Oracle® Spatial User's Guide and Reference", and work thorugh the examples in Chapter 1 and 2.
2) Get Ravi's book (http://www.amazon.ca/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=oracle+spatial&x=0&y=0) and work through the examples
Since you are a beginner, I suggest "Pro Oracle Spatial" by Euro Beinat, Albert Godfrind, and Ravikanth V. Kothuri. (Not the 11g one for a newbie, as the first one does a better job in general 2D spatial. The 11g has excellent material, especially 3D and the additional capabilities, but sets aside some of the in-depth basics.)
3) Go to the Spatial forum, buried in the 'More...' section of the Database category in the Oracle forums.

Import GDF - ORACLE Spatial

How can I import TeleAtlas GDF-AR 3.0 data to ORACLE Spatial without having to write an own import application. Is there any support by ORACLE or does anyone know of some freeware.

I'm not aware of any freeware, however, there are several possible solutions. There is, for example, a german Teleatlas partner (CISS TDI) who can provide GDF data for loading into Oracle Spatial. Another company, logiball (Herne), have developed a solution which is available on a project basis. From Q2 on Navtech will provide GDF data ready for loading into Oracle Spatial, too.

I am totally newbie in Oracle Spatial and to GIS in general. I have started playing around with Oracle Spatial and did an example which is to store a couple of polygons in Oracle and my question is: how to view/display the stored data (in my case the polygons) using Oracle?

thing is, most of the GIS data out there are in SHAPE format so does it make sense to convert [between formats]Depends.
If you're a data producer that wants to ensure a single version of the truth across your company, then maintaining a central repository makes imminent good sense. The alternative would be people working on likely outdated snap-shots of data – stored on their PCs as well as duplicated on file-servers -- bumbling along creating derivatives and passing on the results as if they were valid... Anyhow, spatial analysts would also benefit from a single version of truth.
Data consumers who just want the latest mashups may not want to be bothered with the translation in/out of a database.
Then there’s a grey area with transformations: I've seem instances where it was more expedient to pull data into ArcMap for a massive transformation than performing a similar operation within Oracle.

(I'm sure you've already found it, but you can right-click on a legend entry on ArcMap's Table of Contents and find the Export to ShapeFile option on the context-menu.)

Acquiring Oracle Spatial Data through WFS

Hi,
I have been researching for awhile and am slightly confused.
I have Oracle Spatial 11g with geometry data and would like to be able to retrieve that data through a WFS to serve to a viewing application.
Here's where I am confused:
1) Spatial has a WFS service which needs to be configured. If I were configure that, would I be able to access the data through URL getFeature commands? The documentation I see for them has the getFeature requests in the form of XML files so I am not sure if I can do that. Also it seems like the service is returning .log files but I think I would want GML...
If this is the option I should take, the tutorial to setup OC4J and the Web Services are for a Linux machine (http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/11gr1_db/datamgmt/spatialws/spatialws.htm) -- Is there one for Windows 64bit?
2) Do I need another "application layer" to enable this URL support? I know MapServer can use URL requests.. can I just run this against the data in my DB and forget about the Oracle WFS?
3) MapViewer seems to work with WFS Themes and handle requests through Java and SQL.. is this another option?
I am basically confused as to where everything sits and what I should be focusing on to get my Spatial data out of the DB through a WFS. Any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Data Retrieval Speed in Oracle Spatial vs. ESRI ArcSDE

I would appreciate any opinions regarding data retrieval
performance between Oracle Spatial and ESRI ArcSDE. Would an end-
user (using ESRI software) experience significant differences in
data retrieval speed depending on how the data were stored in
Oracle (MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY verses ESRI Binary/Blob formats).
Knowing that the ESRI binary formats are tailored to their
software front-end apps (ArcGIS, ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and
ArcInfo), wouldn't this be a "non-issue" until the spatial
dataset gets "large", and even then, wouldn't performance be
(almost) equal if the spatial indexes were created properly?

You can't do that type of query in sql from sql*plus using
SDEBINARY. HOwever, you can perform spatial queries in ArcMap
if you are using SDEBINARY.
You can use the query builder to perform point-in-polygon type
queries.
Hope that helps.
For my two cents, I think SDO_GEOMETRY gives you a more robust
database to work with, because you have the added power of
Oracle Spatial functions. If you are using SDEBINARY you are
limited to only what you can do thru ArcGIS.
If you are concerned more about performance than accessibility,
especially with a large number of users, then SDEBINARY might
be the better choice.
I love Oracle Spatial and am hoping that the performance issue
will not be a serious one when we start putting ArcIMS developed
apps into production.
