Locking Files or Folders -- Password protected access?

I know how to simply lock a folder or file so it can't be altered or deleted, by selecting 'Locked' in the file or folder's information box. But is it possible to lock a folder or file so it requires a password to be accessed, without having to use a third-party program? A simple OS X password protected locking feature.

The only built-in way you can do this is by creating an encrypted disk image from the folder using Disk Utiility. When you create the image, make sure you select type "encrypted", and when you first enter the password, make sure not to select "save password in keychain". And test opening the image with the password before you delete the original folder, just in case.

Share Excel File that is password protected

Hello all
I have published a workbook in our shared area at work. It's massive and also has another workbook linked to it.
Both are password protected so are only available for viewing. But tons of people need to see them particularly the source file which is no problem because they can't change anything so can choose 'read only'.
However the problem is when I need to go in there to make a couple of alteration, I have to wait until they close it or of course as is typical, they will leave their desk and forget to close it!!
I haven't used the sharing workbook option although I've tried it and shown one of our departments to use it basically.
I was wondering if this would be possible on a file that is password protected and is locked on every sheet.
That way I can just go in when I need to even if someone's in there.
This is an extremely important file that
can not go wrong. (I do have a backup)
What are your views on this option and what is the best way to go about it?

Would you like to tell me which Excel version are you using? According to your description, I recommend we try the two methods:
Method 1:
Excel has a feature "Protected the sheet", we can assign the different password to each sheet.

Share the Excel workbook, and assign the edit range/permission to users. We can allow specific users to edit ranges in Excel. Here is the steps:

SAP version 4.7 Email pdf file that is password protected.

We have a requirement:
Email pdf file that is password protected.
Once the user receives the email, clicks on the attached pdf file,
     it should ask the password. Note that Password value should come from SAP.
What we have done is get the spool number and by using function module CONVERT_ABAPSPOOLJOB_2_PDF, it converts the spool document to pdf.
On this function module, there are no parameters to make pdf as password protected and
also include the password. This is the problem.
Question:
   (a) Is there a way to make pdf password protected that will be emailed?
        What function modules, etc to be used? (sample coding if available)
   (b) Somebody mentioned the that Adobe LiveCycle Policy Server should be installed together with SAP.
        If this is installed, how then would be the abap coding be in order to make the pdf password
            protected?
        How is the new policy server gonna be linked to SAP and how do the abap coding gonna be?
           (sample abap coding if available)

No. None of the iWork apps on any platform will open a password-protected Office file. You have to remove the password in Office first.

Remember username when connecting to password protected Access DB

We have an applet which connects to a password protected Access DB using JDBC. In IE, NS, and VAJ VM's we can connect to the database with the password without giving a username.
Now I have tried running the applet against the Java Plugin 1.4 VM and the Microsoft driver reports that the password is incorrect.
However, I figured out that if I connect with "Admin" as user name things work out fine.
Thought someone would like to know.
Should this be reported to Sun, or is this sufficient?

You're comparing apples and oranges.
Dropbox is a "cloud" application that allows you to share files or folders of files with others.
Adobe Reader is a "reader" application that lets you view a PDF file.
Why are you trying to stop people from viewing a PDF in Reader? What's your workflow?

Is there a way to password protect access to apps

I want to be able to restrict access to app folders or to applications themselves...would prefer to just put apps into a folder and password protect it before it opens the folder. is there a way this can be done without jailbreaking the phone...I know there are a few with jailbroken phones though I really dont want to jailbreak phone. And everyone always wants to look at phone etc but I do have info in apps etc that are personal/private and dont want them accessing those while looking at phone.

Sorry, but it is not possible to restrict use of specific apps other that the few restrictions provided in the Restrictions settings, not unless the app itself provides some sort of lock. If you don't want your child playing certain games, the only answer is to not load them on the iPad he uses.

Making specific folders password protected in Public folder

If I have two subfolders in the Public folder of my iDisk - each containing images for a different person - can I specify a different password for each folder?

You cannot password protect an ordinary folder. A "disk image" is a special kind of folder that you CAN password protect; on the desktop that 'folder' has the icon of a volume because it actually is a temporary volume. Use Disk Utility to create as many such disk images as you need, each with its own password, and each with a meaningful name ("JonsPics", "stuffforMary", whatever) so that you don't get confused. Put the appropriate files into each disk image and give the appropriate people the password they will need.
Where you then put those disk images (files with suffix .dmg or .sparseimage), on an iDisk or anywhere else, is immaterial.
Try an experiment. Use Disk Utility to create a disk image (with encryption) on, say, your desktop. Drag some files into the temporary volume that has appeared (the 'folder'). Now unmount the temporary volume via a Finder window's sidebar 'eject' symbol or by dragging the volume to the trash - (which is equivalent to closing the folder). You will have a xxx.dmg or a xxx.sparseimage file on your desktop: it contains your files, but hidden from prying eyes - double-click it - it will ask for a password... Those .dmg (or .sparseimage) files are what you will upload to your iDisk.
You can mount a volume from a .dmg or .sparseimage file as often as you like - just as you can open a folder as often as you like -- but with these kind of "folders", once you have closed/unmounted them, you will only be able to remount/reopen them with the correct password.
Don't lose a password - Disk Utility warns you that without it you will be unable to access your files... which is exactly what you have been asking how to do!
Do try it -- you will find it a lot simpler than trying to follow my explanation!

1. Open Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
2. Go to New menu -> select new below the New Window -> Disk Image from Folder
3. Select the folder in question you wish to password protect
4. Below the window where you select the folder, change Compressed to Read/Write, unless you want it Read only in which case you would select Read Only
5. Encryption select AES-128 (recommended)
That will let you password protect the folder.

Run Schema Exporter on password protected Access 97 mdb

I'm trying to generate the Microsoft Access XML file required by OMWB. The MS-ACCESS 97 database that I want to migrate is password protected. When I attempt to use the MDB, I must put in an id/pw. When I try to run the "Database Schema Exporter" (version 10.1.0.2), I receive "Error 3033: You don't have necessary permissions to use path\to\access\mdb".
There is no way to enter an id/pw from the Database Schema Exporter. Is there any way around this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Anyway � what I have found out is �wait for it
Access passwords are limited to 20 characters, but there is no audio feedback to show you have reached the limit. So if you look at the keyboard when you type (like I do) you are blissfully unaware the last four characters of your password have not been accepted!
Therefore as the Exception caught by my application said; my password was wrong!
Maybe this will help others out in the future - although I have a sinking feeling that maybe I am the only one here who could be so dumb!

Why can't I save my password protected file in a password protected folder?

I've just encrypted my folder which contains password protected files. I've attempted to save a new password protected file (Word document) but have had to save it to my desktop because when I try to save the file to the folder I receive a message: "Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full [which it is not] or write-protected [which it is]". Sooooooo. Does this mean I can only password protect the folder and not the files? Which is really annoying because I really do need the two levels of security. Please can someone help?

File Vault is not in Disk Utility. It is in System Preferences/Security/FileVault.
