"Locking" layers view in InDesign

I'm not even sure how to describe this, so forgive me if there's something out there than answers this question.
I work with layers in both photoshop and illustrator quite a bit, mainly because I work with things that have displays and those displays depend on different settings. When I have just one or two graphics it's easy enough for me to flatten and use jpegs but oftentimes I have probably 20 layers/images in one file.
What I'm encountering with this is that sometimes my InDesign updates and uses whatever happens to be visible at the time, so I end up with 20 pictures that are all alike. Now, I do know that I can go in and manually update each linked image, but again, that's a time consuming thing when the deadline is super tight.
So...is there a way to make sure that the layer view of a particular image STAY that particular view?
Thanks!

Thanks ... that worked partially for me ... it appears that all columns have to remain the same width unless you drag one column to adjust it (but doing that does not lock the width for that column for later).

  • Password-lock layers in InDesign

Here's the deal: You have a client asking to give them your native InDesign files so they can update and fix texts.
Is there a way, like a plugin or something, that you could use to lock layers that contains elements you don't want them to edit?
It happens often that you get back a file and they deleted or modified elements, without knowing it (they're  not designers...).
Simply locking layers is not enough, the client knows how to unlock layers and "play" with the files...
Plus it'd be a way to secure your work in case you're not making a template for the client and you don't want to show your technique.

At least I now know such plugin doesn't exist. Not sure it'd be popular or not but talked to a couple designers the other day,
they said it'd be really helpful too, they face similar situations with clients not willing to pay for a full job. This doesn't apply to clients who have money to pay for full jobs.
I work with low-budget companies / organizations who're not interested in investing in software or training.
They like, have a license for InDesign and can play around a bit and put out flyers for their office, that's all. They don't even know
they're supposed to pay for fonts so I keep using fonts that are delivered with InDesign. So yes, InDesign is a professional software that some non-professionals can still use a bit. I don't even want to know how they proceed with final files to send to the printers. I guess they (printers) must fix alot!
Working with PDF and commenting is not always possible. When working on a full-job it might be, but when working on a template, it's the client who's going to put the text in the publication, not me. I just prepare a template with styles with a few pages as examples.
That's because humanitarian organizations prefers paying expensive international office staff with no knowledge of graphic design instead of hiring a professional one (locally) to do their jobs. It's total non-sense, but it's how it is and gives us independents some work, even though it's badly paid.

  • How can I find all locked layers (visible or not) and then Unlock All at once?

OK, for anyone who cares here's the scenario.
I was on a tight deadline. I got a massively layered, -- nested folders everything --  .psd
    I'm using Photoshop CS 5.5
I only needed the visible layers.  So, I go to "Delete Hidden Layers" right? Ooops it was grayed out, I could not use it -- Ahhh that was because of the locked layers...
    No problem. Ugh wait.
Then I realized -- in the complicated layer structure I had to go through every single folder, open it, look for a locked layer and unlock it (nested folders inside of nested folders etc.). If the layer was not visible and it was locked, I had to first turn it to visible, then unlock it, and then turn it off again.
Aaaarrggghhh I was on a deadline, and I just didn't have time -- but I had to do it anyway.
This was a painful experience... I'm telling designers from now on NEVER SEND ME A PSD WITH LOCKED LAYERS AGAIN
It would have been so much easier if I could just search for "locked layers", and "unlock all."
Does anyone know of a solution? Probably something I should have known years ago, or maybe a feature request?
    Thanks!!!

This feature is now available in Photoshop CS6. Layers panel has a layer filter option that simplifies the workflow and is designers dream come true! Please see screenshots below:

  • Lock Finder view as list in every Window/File picker

I have my Finder in list view: always and everywhere (except for the occasional pictures folder).
Within Yosemite I encounter a lot of differences. Sometimes a folder opens in icon view. When the file picker windows appear (in Pages for example) it is icons or columns. It changes randomly.
Is there a way to lock every view of files to "list view".
I tried in Finder, View Options, set as Default. That doesn't work.

Thx for that im gonna try it....but is there a way to do it without using toolbar or cmd-c...? i mean using only the mouse?why does it have to highlight the file even though i click a bit next to it....?using icon view i can right click next to the folder and i wont have a problem but with list view that i prefer using it will highlight the whole row.....and i dont find free space to right click cause i got many files

  • Hidden & locked layers appear in pdfs

For some reason, and all of a sudden, hidden (and locked) layers containing content are showing up in Acrobat conversions.
This is a huge pain: I send a pdf version of a graphic to a client, and they can see every layer, even though I have it hidden & locked in AI CS3.
Is this an Illustrator problem or an Acrobat problem?
Any advice would be MOST appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Nancy

This has a great deal to do with the PDF format you are saving to. For example, Acrobat 4 format (1.3 I think) is a flat file format. Much like an EPS hidden objects become visible when the file is flattened. Why? I don't know. I've asked for a warning or something to alert the user to hidden objects/layers for a while now with no luck.
However, Acrobat 5 format (1.4+ I believe) is a layered format that supports transparency. Saving to Acrobat 5 or higher should not make hidden objects visible. In fact, they will be included in the PDF but still hidden. Often adding to the PDF file size (kb).
I generally find it best to Save, Show All (Command-Option-3), Delete, Save as PDF. This reduces the PDF file size and ensures nothing will suddenly show itself in the resulting PDF.

  • What will happen when I lock a view?

When I lock a view using lock table* statement, what will happen?*
    Is the view get locked?
Or all the base tables are locked from which view is created?
    Or no lock is applied?
    :D

    OrionNet wrote:
    Sohil,
Exact what lock statement you are using.
If following statement used, then you will able to query (select) both the table and view.
??? Oracle table lock never keeps other users from querying a table, and a query never acquires a table lock. So I am not sure what were you trying to say. Anyway, locking a view locks all base tables:
    SQL> create or replace
      2  view emp_dept_vw

      4  select ename,dname
      5  from emp e,dept d

  • Flash cs4 deletes frames on locked layers

    Hello!
I have a problem. While I am drawing, and deleting while all other layers are locked except the one I draw on,
flash deletes frames from the locked layers on the timeline randomly.
It is very annoying, because its a bug, and sometimes I need to redraw a lots of my works.

I am having this EXACT same error message, but it is happening whenever I make a movieclip within a fla file. Once I rotate through the error the movie clip appears as only an outline box on my stage, although opening the button (along with the error showing up again) is viewable and editable. Anything I try to do with the clip...edit, move, anything... the error pops on my screen repeatedly.
This all started after I had a major crash and had to reinstall my system. My registration of CS4 Design Premium was messed up so I ran the Flex Licensing app as suggested by the Adobe site. All other programs work fine... just Flash is messed up. HELP!
P.S... I did try the deletion of prefs, etc as suggested here... that did not work. Also, the file I am working on works fine on another computer running the same version of flash, so it has to be related to a missing or corrupted file I'm guessing, but I don't know which one. I even uninstalled and reinstalled flash to no avail.

Here's the solution if you're on a Mac running 10.5.X or later...
QUIT Flash (don't CLOSE the window - QUIT the app completely (Flash menu next to the apple menu > "Quit")
    Browse to Macintosh HD/Users/"your user name"/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Completely  delete the folder called "Flash CS4" or "Flash CS3", depending on which  version you're using. This means empty the trash.
Re-launch Flash app - should be good to go.

  • Can't open Desctop Content Viewer from InDesign CC2014

    Hi everyone,
I urgently need to create one promo app using DPS. I'm using Adobe Creative Cloud 2014 and planned to use InDesign for creating this app. I have downloaded and installed  AdobeDigitalPublishingPatch-CC2014-31.0.1. yesterday. Everything worked fine. Unfortunately, today I can't preview my pages in Desktop Content Viewer as InDesign says it can't find it. When I tried to open Desktop Content Viewer from the folder Ive got this screen.
What do I need to do to resolve that error. Please advise.
    Best regards,
    Jana

I was trying to open and old .pmd Page Maker file that was created in a Windows version of Page Maker.  I am not sure what version they were saved in.  The file was created in July of 2006 if that helps.
It's been a long time since I was up to speed on PageMaker. The pmd file extension refers to Pagemaker 5, right? InDesign should be able to import the output of PM 6.5 and PM 7, but I've found that the PM6.5 import is usually pretty decent, while for some reason the PM7 import is flaky. This probably is a result of changes in the way the documents were build by the, ah, "designers," and has comparatively little to do with the abilities of ID to open PM files of various versions. PM5, however, can't be imported by InDesign, I think.
What happens when you try to open them? Does InDesign crash, or does it fail without an error message, or ??? More details, please.
Is there a way to open this file.  I also have a pdf that I created from this file.  I have Acrobat CS4  Is there a way to export the pdf back to an Indesign file.  Just another thought regarding this file.
Well, there's always the PDF2ID tool, but since PDF is an uneditable container format, the results of running a PDF through PDF2ID is not reliable. Sometimes you get something very much like the source document, but I've found that most often it is faster to rebuild from scratch. I didn't buy PDF2ID, but that is because my clients' bizarro formatting techniques break on conversion. A very simple document might come back a lot cleaner.

  • Outline view in InDesign is missing

    Hi
I wanted to post a feature is missing in InDesign CS3, View Outlines that we have in Illustrator is missing in InDesign.
I was shocked to see it is not exicst, what Adobe has the say about that?
    It's a must feature !!!

Yikes!  Ok, one thing at a time...
First of all, regarding the comment that I lost you on... that was caused by one simple typo. One word was wrong and it changed the meaning of the entire sentence.  I noticed it after I had made the post, but I thought you'd still get the gist of what I was saying.  I meant to use the word "a" instead of "the".
Therefore the sentence should have read, "...without having to edit a placed AI file".   See how that changes the meaning of the sentence entirely?   Sorry for the error.  I see that your spelling is always perfect.... nary an error to be found LOL.   (Just messin' with ya... I know you're super busy trying to respond to all these ongoing discussions).
That aside, I'm glad to see that you're paying close attention to what I'm saying!
In regards to using placed files... it's a shame that this discussion has completely gone down that road.  After working with Quark since the early '90s, I'm only accustomed to using placed files, and that's obviously the only sensible way to work. Quark and ID are simply layout/assembly apps, and there's no need to be creating anything in these programs other than (as you say), the occasional rule line or simple filled shape.
But if you read my text even more closely, you'll see that this is exactly what I said.  The first part of my sentence reads, "It just means that for the occasional simple box or polygonal shape, you actually have the option to adjust the position of a node or two..."
I don't see how you therefore get the impression from that comment that I would  be trying to build actual vector artwork in ID.  There is no need for you (or John) to waste a minute of your collective time lecturing me on the downfalls of this type of workflow!  LOL  This is getting absolutely crazy.  You sound like a couple of grannies!  OF COURSE placing artwork is the only way to go!!  This discussion is purely about the pros and cons of VIEW OUTLINES mode, as per the TOPIC of this string.
But that aside, I see that even you are a little confused as to why ID would have allowed users to copy and paste very complex vector artwork directly from AI to ID. That throws a real wrench in the works doesn't it?  If ID was intended to be strictly a layout/assembly app relying on placed files, why would they then allow this possibility?  It's only going to serve to give new users (who never had the benefit of being thoroughly drilled into using placed files as were you, I and John) the idea that, hey, we might as well just create our drawings directly in ID!!   What fun!!!!  Oh boy oh boy!
Now you and John can really have some folks to lecture!   Good luck with that!!
As for the vector capabilities in Quark 4... that was actually added in response to ID's first release, which included this feature.  Earlier versions of Quark didn't have that capability.   That was part of their effort to fight back!
NOW THAT WE'VE GOT ALL THAT OUT OF THE WAY we can get back to the initial discussion.
Just to clarify, one more time, for the record (John are you listening?), I am not suggesting that we need View Outlines mode so that we can make ID "just like AI".  I'm simply saying that it's a way to quickly see where all your bounding boxes fall relative to your trim marks or template details.  It's like, you're staring at the screen up close, you're trying to adjust positions of a stack of picture boxes relative to your measurements.... you don't want to be looking at boxes full of content or fills while you're doing this, and you don't want to have to contend with stroke widths.... you just want to eliminate all that confusion quickly, line things up accurately, and then switch back to preview mode.  It's just an efficient way of working.  What else can I say?  Plenty of apps have optional ways of doing things, which cater to various users' preferences.  I have assembled hundreds of packaging layouts in AI over the years, and having the option to View Outlines is absolutely indispensible.
With all due respect, I don't believe you've done a lot of AI layouts which are destined for print, otherwise (as I have said), you would totally understand just how valuable, efficient and handy the View Outlines mode is.
Anyhow, it's very simple, and it really doesn't warrant this much discussion.  It's clear that more and more people are wondering why this was never added to ID, ESPECIALLY when you consider that Adobe is perfectly willing to allow us to paste AI vector files directly into ID.  (Maybe you should go over there and give those programmers heck).
As a highly experienced professional designer/layout artist, etc. etc., I contend that View Outlines mode would be a very practical addition to ID, and I would like to remind you that the only reason I even joined this discussion was because I saw you ripping into that poor Talgut guy, who was also simply stating the obvious.  And there are many more besides him, and there will continue to be many more.
Being able to turn off all the fills and strokes instantly, and simply see your pure mechanical structure relative to your template in an instant is super handy, especially when you have stacks of bounding boxes.  Oh sure, you can hold Shift and start clicking through them, or you can make sure every box is on it's own layer so that you can click layers on and off in order to see where everything sits, but why  go through all those steps when you should be able to simply VIEW OUTLINES.  That's my whole point!!
Further, how hard could it be for the Adobe app developers to simply make it so that we don't see the fills, content and strokes.  I can't imagine that would be a huge programming issue, especially when you consider that they've made it so that ID can totally accept pasted AI files!
I only brought up these issues of ID being similar to AI in some ways because back in the beginning, at the inception of ID, that was one of the ways it was being touted.  That was one of the angles they were using to woo us all over from Quark.  Don't you or John remember any of that?
Anyhow, I've spent way too much time discussing this already.  You're clearly very set in your ways, and it's because you've never spent years doing print layouts in AI.  We did that often, instead of using Quark, largely because we were able to View Outlines in AI.  Why build your packaging in Quark if you can build it in AI and ensure super precision accuracy?  We only needed Quark for multi-page files.
Dang I sure hope some other old timers stumble across this thread.  I need some backup here!!  This is hard work.  You are one obstinate fella!  LOL

  • Wireframe view in indesign like coreldraw

    Hi all,
I have a query. i.e., is there any way to view the pages in wireframe view like coreldraw, as it makes easy to view all the objects and texts in the page.
Or else is there any other way we can view all the objects placed in a page, behind or with transparency etc., just for checking purpose that any unwanted objects is there, which can affect while printing.
    thanks
    regards
    karthik.r

Well, I work for a huge, global company and we frequently have to edit OTHER artists' files. Some artists have very strange ways of building a complicated file and revealing layers is not always enough to discover what "junk" is hidden on a page.
I work in translation & localization, and I have seen everything, from files created by designers in "huge, global" companies all the way down to the mom & pop print shop down the street. I've handled InDesign files that started as idml written out of a database, InDesign files that started as PageMaker 5 files that were incrementally updated over the years, you name it.
I think that a wireframe view would be useful to people like you and me, but may I suggest an edit to your commentary? A classic copyeditor's comment: change from passive to active voice.
"It IS needed" -> "I NEED it."
If you want to trade tips on forensic disassembly & reassembly of crazy InDesign files, I'm game. But fighting with these guys over what the priorities of the engineers over at Adobe ought to be is a losing proposition for all parties. Who signs the paychecks for those engineers? It's not anybody in this thread, I think.
(OTOH, this thread led to the words "Bob's Software & Tanline Company" being posted. That was definitely needed.)
