Locking Mail?

Can somebody let me know if Mail can be locked so that it takes a password to open? Or how to lock a folder etc. If I Get Info on Mail there is a lock box but I cannot check it as it is grayed out.

The Unix and Mac security models have always been "each user has full access to that user's files and no (or limited) access to other users' files". You can create an encrypted disk image, which will require a password to mount (and hence to access whatever you put on it). You'll get something similar to a password-protected folder, OTOH, as long as that image is mounted, all files on it will be accessible. I think you're making a lot of un-necessary work for yourself by avoiding creating separate accounts.

  • Attachments lock mail when attempt to download

When Ii receive an attchment and try to "save as" it locks up Mail. If the attachment is a single image like a zip or multipage pdf, I can select and drag to save. Just happens to single images. Any clues?

Glad I am not the only one. The work around I use is not too difficult. I can open the attached file (Acrobat, jpeg etc) with an app and the do a save to where I need it to be. Just a minor pain since I usually have the apps running anyway. Hope that gets you by like it does me. I am sure it will be addressed with the first update.

  • Cant get Lock Mail box in use. Why this error?

    Hi
I m try to display the mails in the inbox in a web page.
What i m doing is when i click the subject, it should display the content of the
mail. When i m doing it for the first time its working fine.
After that if i go back to the page and click the next mail's subject, i get an
error message like this :" Cant get lock, Mailbox in use."
Now what should i do? how do i display the content of the next mail.

Sounds like the first page gets some kind of lock on the mailbox and doesn't release it. Then the second page doesn't work because of that lock.

  • How to lock Mail on the Dock

For reasons I don't really understand I have a hard time keeping the Apple Mail on the dock. I did hte righ-click option and check "Keep in Dock"  and that did not work.  I am useing OS X 10.8.3 on an iMac.  My wife has the same issue with her Outlook icon on a MBP.
How can I lock the Mail icon to stay on the Dock?

Download the free app TinkerTool from http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html
In the TinkerTool preferences, go to "Dock" and (in "Restricted Dock") check "Don't allow to modify content."
    Then click on Relaunch Dock.
Thereafter, if you ever want to make any modifications to the Dock, you will need to uncheck "Don't allow to modify content."

  • Fetching mail locks Mail app up upon launch

When I open Mail on my iPhone it locks for minutes. It is too busy fetching mail before it becomes accessible for the user. Sometimes I get a few seconds to click on a message to open, but often it goes back to this frozen status. Often I have to get to the home screen and back to 'wake it up'.
I have three POP-accounts (no IMAP) set to fetch manually. Show 50 recent messages. Preview 4 lines. Load Remote Images off.
After a while, when I leave Mail open and put the iPhone away, it becomes usable.
This is particularly annoying when sending an e-mail from another app.
What settings to change? How do you make Mail usable?

This could certainly be caused by a Mail plug-in. Uninstalling a plug-in may or may not be as straightforward as just removing it from the folder where it appears to have been installed. You must read the available documentation or visit the plug-in’s website to learn how to properly uninstall it (and you shouldn’t install any plug-ins that don’t include instructions for uninstalling them).
In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Email from info@ locks mail

I have been receiving emails from info@ . . . When these emails are accessed in iPad Mail, the app is locked.  I can delete others around it, but as soon as that one receives focus, the app is locked.  iPad 1, IOS 5.  I am also pursuing verizon email to acitvate a filter, but that is another story I won't bother with here.  Any ideas?

It is a scam, it's an attempt to try and get your account and payment details. If you still have the email you could forward it to Apple : [email protected] , and then delete it.

  • Mail says another app has locked it and won't go online.

Mail (5.2) stays offline. I get a message saying that another application has locked mail.

You have two devices that access the same email account with POP configuration, this lock the access from another device.

  • Tidying Apple Mail-at my wits end...

I've literally been battling this scenario, on and off, for well over a week now, probably closer to two weeks. All I'm trying to do is save, then delete some emails. But I just cant seem to get it done. Here are some details...
At work, we're using Apple Mail as the front end to a Gmail Account. They're connected via IMAP. A couple of weeks ago, the boss man said his HD was nearly full and Mail was the main suspect. Yeah, I'll say! A 200GB Mail folder is a little excessive. So I decided that I would spear-head the clean-up efforts. We're a photography business. We send / receive a lot of emails and we have a ton of massive attachments all the time. The whole email "system", which pre-dates my involvement with the company, is so convoluted it's scary. I don't even know how many emails we're talking about. We'll over 40,000.
Here's my general tactic so far. I made a Smart Mailbox to show me everything from 2011, including Sent but not including Trash. This was to be my main filter. I made another Smart Mailbox, identical to this one, but I also had it reveal emails that specifically "Contain Attachments". I went into this Smart Mailbox and tried to select all and chose to Remove Attacments. This would eventually lock Mail up, I'd have to force quit and try again. I eventually sorted this on Size and started at the top and would select small clusters of emails and remove attachments. I did this long enough and often enough to eventually remove all the attachments. Although this is where an anomaly revealed itself. When I would bounce back over to the "all 2011" Smart Mailbox, some of those emails seemed to have attachments still. Huh? A lot of them still had attachments. I thought I'd just dumped these attachments? So I did another Select All, in the full 2011 Smart Mailbox and selected Remove attachments. This too choked things down to the point of needing to force quit Mail. Upon re-launching, one of the many times I needed to, Mail acted almost like it had been initialized and needed to be set up again. Not from scratch, but it did want to re-import 35K emails. I waited this out and eventually it seemed to come back to life. Although this is where Anomaly #2 came in. The IMAP account seemed okay. But I also have my own work email in Apple Mail too, a POP account. Instead of the 1,500 emails I should have had in my own inbox, there were essentially none. No drafts (should've been a dozen.) No Sents and about 6, very recent, emails in my inbox. So my account got toasted along the way! Great. This was days ago. I'm delirious from struggling this with for so long...
After nearly pulling all my hair out, I was finally able to archive all of 2011. The general process was to
    1.) Make 2011 Smart Mailbox
    2.) Remove Attachments
3.) Save as: Raw Message Source
    4.) Delete 2011 emails
This took our 200GB Mail folder down to around 60GB. Hooray! Though, now it was (is) time to try the same move with 2012.
I tried the exact procedure and found pretty much the same oddities: despite having "removed attachments" for the 2012-with-Attachments Smart Mailbox, when I'd move to the "Everything 2012" Smart Mailbox, there were still (large) attachments floating around inside. Again: huh? This stil does not make sense to me, but a some point I had already given up trying to make sense of a lot of this. But I did the same thing: stayed inside 2012 Everything and tried removing more attachments. I've been doing this crap for another week now as once Mail got relaunched, emails with supposedly removed attachments, were re-appearing with their attachments attached. Stil scratching my head on that one...
So now I'm at the point where I'm over it! I'm done trying to remove attachments. I'm simply trying to do a Save As, Raw Message Source, like before. I don't care how large the resulting mbox file may be. But the issue now is a ridiculous amount of waiting—again. When I reveal the Activity Window I'm seeing long, long waits in a few areas: "updating cache directory" and "fetching headers" to name a few. I'm trying the "Save As" right now, as I type and I'd say in the past hour, the status bar *may* have move .1 %—if that!!
What can I do? Do I just need to wait, what feels like is going to be a year, for this process to complete? What about my, essentially lost, emails. (When I log into gmail, via the web, I can see the emails "labeled" with MY address are still there. At least 1,000 of them.)
I can't express how frustrating this has become. I'm a photo editor. I'm supposed to be editing. But I'm technically savvy and have been using Macs for over a decade so these kinds of tasks also, by default, fall into my jurisdiction. I'm *just* trying to archive some emails. I had no idea it would take TWO SOLID weeks. And. I'm not even done. I'd be different if I spent two weeks to get it completed. I've spent two weeks and I'm not even half way done.
    I'm feeling so defeated.
Any words of wisdom or guidance at this point would be greatly appreciated. I can provide any kind of additional info that may be needed. The system that I'm trying this on is an iMac running 10.6.8. The bosses machine with the clogged HD is a white plastic MacBook running 10.6.8. He also has this IMAP/Gmail account up and running on our Mac Mini running 10.8.3. FWIW, my POP account is not installed on these latter two machines. I just took a look at the Mail folder on the Mini and it's at about 53GB. What can I do to get out of this straight jacket. What sort of tactics should I be employing, more regularly, to not end up in this torture room that I'm sitting in now...
    Thanks for listening!
That top bar, Saving 39027 messages, hasn't budged at all. It's been running for over an hour now...
The one beneath has only moved as far as shown, in the same time—over an hour. Ugh.

Hopefully, it's working. Slow and steady. [S L O W being the operative word.]
But 9 hours later it looks like the Save As process is about half done.
Another week and I might actually get this done.

  • Installing Mavericks produced "a connection error occurred" in Mail and "connection failed" in App Store

    Dear Apple Support Community!
I installed Mavericks OS X on my iMac immediately after it was released. I was soon starting to experience trouble with logging in to Mail and App Store. After contacting Apple Support and trying various tips and tricks to no avail, like re-installing Mavericks for instance, I just decided to wait for an update of the OS X to see if that would solve my problems. Unfortunately, that didn't help either.
I therefore turn to the Apple Support Communities in hope of expert help that will solve my problems.
Here are the actions that result in error messages:
    Mail > Choose a mail account to add > Google > Continue > Name/Email Address/Password > Set Up > A connection error occurred.
App Store > Sign In > Apple ID/Password > Sign In > Connection failed.
I have three accounts on my computer:
System Administrator, Guest Account and Other.
I use the “Other” account as my regular account. When I log in to the System Administrator or Guest Account I don’t experience any problems; Mail and App Store work as they should.
Booting in safe mode does not solve the problem:
I disconnected all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and removed all aftermarket expansion cards. I booted in safe mode and logged in to the account with the problem.
I tested the said actions while in safe mode. The problems were the same.
After testing, I rebooted as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verified that I still had the problems.

I have had somewhat similar problems as Øystein Ange since upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mavericks in January. But fortunately, I have been able to solve many of them after a lot of trial & error, frustration and sweat! I now long for the more than 2 years of previous Snow Leopard usage when problems were small, few and far between, and quickly solvable. I feel as if Apple has cut me adrift and left me to struggle on my own with the seemingly numerous problems of getting the performance of Mavericks to finally stabilize on my iMac.
Øystein's Feb. 8th post asks some of the same Mavericks questions that I still have. It would be very helpful to me, and to others I'm sure, if someone/anyone has specific suggestions or solutions on what one could/should do to fix specific problems with newly installed Mavericks OSs, short of a clean, full re-install of the OS.
I have one admin account plus the guest account on my iMac Mavericks. Does this mean my admin account is a/the root account?! How can one tell whether or not they are logging in with a root account?! What's the distinction between the root account, a user's admin account, and other standard users' accounts?! Could someone please recommend a definitive Apple document describing all the various types of Mavericks accounts, in detail, and how/when/where/why each type should be used before or along with any of the others?
Why is it suddenly a no-no to log on to Mavericks via the root user account, when previous OS versions had no problem with this?! What's the purpose of the root user account if not to use it to log on to the computer?! If it's so dangerous, why isn't it internally safeguarded from inadvertent logins by casual users?! What damage or harm are we talking about, and why weren't personal-use customers given a big warning about this apparent "booby trap" in Mavericks?! Saying NEVER DO THAT is like closing the barn door after the horse has already bolted, and it explains nothing to the casual user.
We can't just do a clean re-install every time something in Mavericks hiccups?! Based on my recent experience, and on what I'm seeing in this thread, I would have had to re-installed it a half dozen times in the past 2 months alone!! That's nonsensical. There's got to be a better way of fixing a newly installed Mavericks OS than doing a re-install over and over again. Why don't the Mac diagnostic and troubleshooting tools work in Mavericks' case, as they have done for me on many occasions on earlier OS versions?! What is it about Mavericks that makes it different this time?! Could it possibly have something to do with integration of Mavericks and iCloud; and, if so, what specific cautions should the casual user observe to make sure they don't jeopardize the integrity of Mavericks by doing something similar to logging in from the root account?!
Many customers need to be brought in out of the dark! Is there an Apple Mavericks expert out there who can advise the customer community on specifically how to apply the existing repair tools to solve specific Mavericks teething problems, without having to revert to multiple OS re-installs?

  • How to lock a single email?

Hello everybody over there. I wonder how can I lock a single email in Mail? I need to lock a three-month account paper sent by my bank because my Mac is used by my girlfriend as well. Any idea?

    Dave Sawyer wrote:
There is no way included in Mac OS X to prevent anyone who has access to your user account from seeing any given message in Mail. If you don't want your girlfriend reading specific email messages, it's probably most practical to just save them somewhere outside of Mail and delete them from Mail. Or as has been suggested give her a separate Mac OS X user account and then log out of yours when you're not using your computer.
And no, there's no way to prevent Spotlight from being able to find any given file in a user account unless you place that file in a secure disk image or use another security utility such as Espionage which says it can also lock mail, though I don't know if can lock a single message (I think it only locks folders which would mean it possible could lock a mailbox, but not just a single message).
    Regards.
There is a way to prevent Spotlight from searching single locations and that is through System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy. I added the mailbox wherein that email currently is. I thought I could lock an email as I can with any folder on my Mac. Espionage is nice, but you are right as it only locks folders, not single messages.
    Thank you.

  • Mac OS 10.7 Lion "Mail Can't Verify the Identity of "-Server-".

This has been an issue for years, but didn't really become a serious problem until another issue (See ~ Massive Deletion of Junk Mail Lockup) conflicted and locked Mail App.  I must force quit Mail to try another tactic.
Upon launching, nothing has kept all the "deleted" messages from all reopening (this takes about 10 minutes) and not being accessible because each account sequentially has pop up windows that are not responsive.
Either the host server's certificate is not valid or Mail doesn't recognize the certificate, so each time I launch Mail, it asks what to do for each account.

Great. I've done nothing else and it has resolved itself. I hate when that happens because I can't conclude what the final fix was. I can only guess that accepting the wildcard SSL fixed it since that was the last thing I did.
So, I can only conclude at this point that accepting the SSL and rebooting(?) fixed the issue.

  • Locking only a few apps?

Is to lock only specific applications? Instead of locking the whole iPod touch, is it possible to only lock Mail, Contacts, and some apps store apps? I don't want to have to unlock the iPod every time I want to change songs, rewind 30s, change the volume (I have a 1Gen iPod)... But if i loose the iPod, I don't want who ever found it to see my contacts, send email as me ...

Thank you the the hint, the double-tap of the home button is going to be really useful. I wish I had known that for a while. The controls don't show the back 30s, but it will help a lot. Is there a way I can suggest the half-lock setup to Apple? Basically, have the full lock, but also setup a half-lock where you can configure a list of applications that are locked instead of the whole iPod. The iPod touch behave as if it is unlock until you try to use one of apps on the list at which time the lock/unlock screen shows up.

  • Chronic Mail Freezing on iPad2

The Mail app on my iPad2 seems to have given up. Whenever it is connected to Wifi or 3G it goes into infinite "Checking for Mail" mode and never retrieves anything. I can't send documents using email and if I select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" in Settings to try to reinstall my accounts, the Settings menu freezes, too.
The first couple of times it did this, I rebooted and it worked OK. Then I had to use Restore to put the problem right a few more times. Now even that doesn't work.
I'm getting a bit frantic - anyone any ideas?

Mi new iphone 6 running latest version of iOS 8 Has locked Mail. I did a hard boot and it worked for 5 seconds. Can't do anything with Mail at all.  i am using a third party mail app too. It works, but is limited. Bluetooth cannot find any devices, it found my Mac, but it doesn't work. I think ios8 has some serious issues. Mail worked on 5S on latest version of OS
