Locking up and random SBOD - memory related.

Hi All,
I am relatively new to macs, but consider myself a veteran with PC and other electronic troubleshooting. That out of the way, I am hoping for some experienced opinions.
New g5, 2.5GHz DP, 2.5 GB RAM, etc. Fresh install of tiger after I took it out of the box. Minimal apps (MS Office, Firefox, iLife 05, etc) - nothing out of the ordinary.
I run MacJanitor and clean my caches regulary. Oh yeah, and repair permissions.
so....
Intermittently, for no apparent reason, I get crashes (Application Terminated Unexpectedly etc) or if not a crash, it will freeze (say while typing this email - nothing taxing) and the CPU fans will go full tilt and the Beachball makes an appearance. 5 - 10 seconds later, back to normal and i can resume typing.
So... i run the full Apple Hardware Checker and it tells me that the memory in J13 is bad. Fine, so i replace that, and everything works great for a few months. Had to do some clean up and disk repair due to the constant crashing, but there you go.
Now, it is doing the same thing and seriously damaging the carefully cultivated mac reputation here in the household. I run the test and whaddya know - the DIMM in J13 is bad again. Just removed the extra 2G and it works better now with 512 than it did with 2G.
So.. on to my questions:
1. anyone else have this come up?
2. is it likely to have been 2 bad sticks, or is it likely to be a problem with the system board causing them to go bad (same DIMM slot remember)? AHC showed system board fine.
3. besides the "party line" does anyone know for a fact whether it is detrimental to run different brands of RAM in matching slots, as long as they are spec'd the same and show up the same in system profiler?
4. If i suspect a problem wtih J13, can i just skip 13/14 and go straight to 15/16 if i reinstall? That was probably a dumb question.
I would surely appreciate some guidance here - I don't want to keep throwing RAM at it, if this is some known problem that needs to be addressed at the system board level.
I should mention that when the issue first showed up, i swapped the DIMMs from J13 and 14, and the problem followed the original stick when i reran the checker.

are original Apple equipment, it would be OK to get
an additional set from say Crucial and put that in
with those? As long as they match within their bank
pairs, right?
Correct. As long as the pairs from Crucial are matched, you should have no problem.

FF4 in Vista giving brief black screen on new tabs, then locking up and eating through memory like crazy - happening repeatedly.

FF4 final running on Win Vista 32bit. FF 3.6.15 was faster and completely stable as is my OS. With FF4, opening a new tab usually causes the screen to black out very briefly, and then sometimes (not always) totally lock up - even when it's an empty tab. The memory usage then climbs rapidly. Have had to kill it multiple times now and using Chome because it is incredibly stable. Please sort this out ASAP - I've been a loyal FF user fan for years.

This (may) be related to Google Instant...not sure yet though. Either way, not a good feature. I am really unimpressed with FF4.

Lock ups and dumping psyical memory!!!

Hi i have just installed a new pc most of the stuff im useing is from my old computer so i know they work fine im running a:

My computer locks up alot when running intense games (games have worked before no problem) i also get a error saying dumping pysical memory, i have looked about and tried to solve this myself, i found that someone was haveing the exact same problem as me and he fixed it by turning the FSB down as his memory wasnt compatable with his motherboard if doing that works how do i do it ?

Flappa, Your memory " clock" is fine and there is no need to "underclock it" as long as you did not mess with the Bios.
I had the same problems. I could not even get thru a Clean install of windows as it would Blue Screen
1- are you running in " Dual Channel Mode"?
2- If so is your memory a " match Set"?
some times memory even thought it has the same markings is not matched . Dual channel sets are matched and made to run together in "Dual Channel Mode"{
( Even though I had the same manufacturer memory my set would not run in Dual Channel without " Blue Screening" I bought a Matched Set of Kingston Valueram and have not had a problem since
3- If it is not a matched set, pull one stick out and run it for a while , if it still bluescreens try the other stick
4- raise your memory voltage to 2.7 or 2.8 ( which ever is the lowest that it runs stable)
5- If all this does not work , run MEMTEST to see if there is a problem with both sticks
6- you are running a Bios Version that supports the " Prescott Microcode" right?

Oracle SQL Developer freezes and locks up computer randomly

I attempted to find a solution to this before posting. I looked through the first 40 pages of this forum and on Google, through the Developer documentation, etc. with no luck.
The problem: while using Oracle SQL Developer, the computer randomly freezes. Things work, but it hangs too often and for too long to use. This is random - it can happen every 10 seconds or every 2 minutes. The mouse will lock up, and the keyboard buffer will get all messed up. For instance, if it happens to freeze while I'm hitting "backspace", it will delete many lines of text (I've lost a bit of work because of this in the past). The freezing will last about 2 to 20 seconds, and the only way out of it is to ctrl+alt+delete and kill SQL Developer.
If SQL Developer is running, and I'm in a different window - it will freeze the other windows as well. Again, it's impossible to use unfortunately. My coworker doesn't have the same problem, and he's connecting to the same database with the same version using Windows Vista. It must be something on this computer. I reformatted about 1 month ago, so it's a pretty fresh install and I haven't installed much of anything yet.
I'm using Windows Vista Enterprise 32-bit w/SP1.
This was occurring with older versions of SQL Developer (1.2). I'm using the newest install that included the Java JDK. I've completely removed Java, my Oracle installs, and a host of other attempts to fix this, and nothing changes. I've tried running the .exe in the bin directory as administrator as well.
Currently using Oracle Developer 1.5.1.54.40.
Any ideas?

I tried dumping the contents, but the java dump wasn't showing anything at all, and it would never freeze while I had the console window in focus, so it wasn't very helpful unfortunately.
I fixed this issue by uninstalling the Java runtime on this machine and installing the Java JDK 6 Update 7 from java.sun.com/javase/downloads . I then downloaded the SQL Developer 1.5.1 version without the Java runtime included, and pointed it to the Update 7 .exe file upon first load.
I was using JDK 6 Update 6 previously, and it must have been behind the errors. Note that the Update 7 has to be downloaded from that website as it's a new version that hasn't been posted on the regular java.com site yet.

Satellite Pro 6000 locks up and the screen has weird random pattern

I recently bought a SP6000 second hand advertised as having "graphics problems". After 10 minutes or so use the laptop locks up and the screen has a weird random pattern all acorss it. The speakers also make a strange buzzing sound. i have to shut down the laptop and reboot.
I updated the bios and the videocard drivers from the toshiba site but it is still doing it. Can anyone help?

You need to make sure that you have a very steady hand and you have a .4mm soldering tip. The joins are very close and surface mounted, one slip of your hand and you can end up soldering 3 or 4 of the connections together and then spend 30 minutes trying to desolder them.
Just like the page said, use a dental pick, or a small plastic pin and see if you can move any of the pins around. I must warn you though, the more you press down and flex the laptop to turn it on the more damage you have probably done to the pins, you may end up with about 8 of them disconnected from the board. Dont use a high wattage soldering iron either...10 to 15watt iron should do the trick. Tin the tip, let it heat up and tap the join between the board and the pin for 1 or 2 seconds and it should do the trick. Easy way to know is you should have a nice shiny bead of solder connecting the pin to the board. If you have that then it has taken. if you see only a dull grey colour then it hasnt taken and is a "dry" solder joint.
One thing you should do before soldering, take some non abrasive rubbing alcohol, dip a cotton swab and rub all along the joins in the top and bottom. Solder oxidises after time...if you dont take the oxidisation off your more than likely to suffer from dry joints. The pins on the right of the connector (front of the laptop facing you" will probably be the ones which have came loose...check them first on the top and bottom of the connector.

To back to the normal scale you have to disable the parallax.
Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Reduce Motion (turn off)
You won't be able to put the wallpepr out of frame as ios 6 (earlier), but it stop to putting the annoying zoom.

The lock button does not turn OFF the iPhone. It will give you a screen with the option to turn OFF the iPhone. Possibly the battery is faulty. Make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple store for free battery diagnostic testing and evaluation.

Touchpad randomly locks itself and wont unlock on Satellite P50-A

Don't know if anyone can help me out but i recently bought a P50-A laptop and i am having issues with the touch-pad.
Basically what is happening is that every now and then my touch-pad randomly locks itself and then wont allow me to unlock and will unlock once I have reset the laptop.
I have checked the drivers and everything appears to be working fine and there appears to be no hardware conflicts.
Has anyone else had this happen to them?

I have experienced recent system lock-ups and I am require to shut down with the power switch could this be a OS problem or software related using LION with latest updates

Whats up with the system lockups just frustrated as to why. I could be checking mail, surfing the web or using PS Elements 9. Makes no difference what I am doing it occationaly locks up and requires a cold boot (windows talk).

I don't think so, Lion with the latest updates is running fine for most of us.
Post the log for your next lockup or the previous one if you can isolate the timeframe.
/Applications/Utilities/Console > system.log

Mds randomly starting and using all memory

My system slows down abruptly and when i check the Activity Monitor, it shows that mds is using about 150mb real memory and 1gb virtual memory. Could someone tell me what is going or how to limit the memory used by a process?

well, after cataloging, isnt it supposed to stay put? i can understand this happening when a new program is installed or a lot of files are added - spotlight then becomes unavailable and shows that its indexing. but what is it doing after that? this never happened before - it takes 5sec for the dock to show up when it runs, i hope you get the idea of how slow it is.

HP 505B locking up and kicking out a frozen white screen. Hard reboot seems to fix it for awhile

So I have an HP 505B running in our office with Windows 7 Pro 32bit, intergrated nvidia graphics, and 4gbs of memory. Product number VS882UT.
It will randomly hard lock and display a white screen on the monitor. I have tried reseating all cables, replaced the monitor with a known good ( when the issue happens...still no go), replaced cables, updated the graphics drivers and also the bios. checked event logs for major errors (other than the hard shutdown event after coming back up...not much else is listed).I've also ran the onboard diags and they come back as passing. plus i've ran my own memtests over an extended period of time.
The issue doesn't happen all the time, I could go 2 weeks without an issue. No particular program ever seems to cause the issue. I have opened and cleaned all the fans and they all seem to be functioning normally. I have also reseated memory and reinstalled the OS from the factory partition.
I've ran into this issue in the past with another 505b, went through all the steps above contacted tech support and eventually had the motherboard replaced. Sounds like a good fix....it wasn't the last desktop ended up doing the same thing a month or so out. I'm running out of options to try other than going with another manufacturer. I have a lot of these desktops and i'm afraid at some point it's going to happen to all of them. Hoping maybe someone out there has had this issue as well and can recommend a permanent fix.

I'm IT support at a law firm and we have ... I don't know...at least 20 505B desktops. I think they came with Windows 7 and we downgraded them to XP.
In the past 2 months, I've had at least 5 or 6 of them all start having this issue! Its like someone set off a time bomb!
The only fix thus far has been to order a standalone PCI video card and disable the onboard video.
I've tried updating the drivers from both HP's website and the Nvidia website, which does not help.
I really do not like having to keep buying new video cards for a computer that should work fine....and is out of warranty! (conveniently for HP...)

Problem:
System can lock up at random time, even during startup or in BIOS screen. It accompanied by screen with artifact. (will show pic)
Testing done:
Clearing CMOS thru Clear CMOS button, as well as taking out the CMOS batteries out for a minute
Check voltage in BIOS and they looked fine
Changing BIOS setting from (Integrated Graphic Adapter) PEG to IGD
Reseating the CPU, even though the CPU never hit above 37 degree at BIOS screen
Tested individual RAM module in each slot
Ran Memory-Z and passed the test; Didn't tried Memtest86+ because I doubt the system will last the entire run
Tried replacing the PSU with an Antec Basiq 430W
Unplugging everything and leaving only the CPU, CPU fan, 1 module of RAM, and HDD
Observation:
When system locked up with the artifact on screen, the mouse is dimly lighted and flickered when it's clicked.
All 4 CPU Phase LEDs lit up, but the three on the right are dimmer than the one on the left and it appears that they are flickering.

Is the mobo the problem? I doubt this system will use more than 300W peak without a discrete GPU and no OCing. Appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks.

Lock-Ups and Freezes PLEASE HELP

Hello everyone..
I come here to see if anyone can help me... Ive done it all and nothing is working.
I just recently started having problems with my computer, im not sure why this happend but ill try to explain everything as best as I can.
The problem started a few days ago while I was playing SWG's. I was playing and all of a sudden my machine froze, the screen locked-up and then after about 2 min the entire system restarted. I then logged back into my windows and after a while a system froze and restarted yet again. I though it was a SWGs issue but then the computer would freeze while browsing the net and doing other tasks.
I have formated my machine, re-installed my drivers, and re-installed the hardward. Nothing has worked.

If what you are saying, and I am reading correctly:
The machine and game was working just peachy and all of a sudden the problem manifested itself?
Did you do ANYTHING to change your system prior to this happening to possibly have an effect?
the fast that you said you have re-loaded the OS and removed and re-installed the hardware with the same result tells me that there may be some sort of hardware failure and this could get difficult to troubleshoot.
First things first, try a memory testing software like memtest86 to see if you get any errors.

SQL: System locks up and runs slow after performing simple DML record insert

SQL Version: 2008 R2
I am having a serious problem. I ran the following code to perform a simple table record insert which ran successfully. However, after running this code I could no longer access the related table. I couldn't run a query against it.
I tried to delete all the records and that wouldn't work either. When attempting to run any DML statements (i.e. Select * From vPCCertificateTypes) against this table SQL gets locked up and never returns anything and no error messages. I have
to manually stop the query. Now the entire SQL system is running slow.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. The code I ran to originally insert the records is below.

The problem was an open uncommitted transaction against the table as you suspected. I ran your code and it cleared the transaction. In the past I would intentionally leave our the Commit statement and then if the transaction ran fine, I would
simply highlight and run 'COMMIT' and it would close the transaction. Apparently that is not the correct approach. I'll use your suggested code from now on.

That certainly looks like a low memory issue, 2 GB ram is barely enough to run Mac OS X versions from Lion through Yosemite. The high number of Page Outs and killed processes show very high memory pressure.
Try adding memory, but be sure it is high quality, Mac certified memory such as that from OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com
