Locking up while backing up/transfering to NAS

I just recently got a QNAP NAS the 419PII.  My MBP's were able to back up to it perfectly fine.  However, my iMac started locking up after about 500mb were transfered.
The machine has an icy dock mb982spr-2s solid state array, with 2 Agility3 120gb SSD.
It ran perfectly since November with this set up, and it only showed up after setting up my NAS.  In my mind, that's just coincidence, because the NAS isn't even wired to the machine.
Disk utility has repaired and verified the entire array.  I have verified and repaired the permissions multiple times.  I reinstalled Lion and the results are all the same.
I am still suspicious that the icy dock array isn't working correctly, but everything I've tried tells me it's okay.  I also tried booting my MBP from the drive externnally, and it seemed to work okay that way, but I didn't run it for an extended period.
I do have just under a year of AppleCare left, but what will they do, if it is the aftermarket harddrive set up?
I'm just over 2 hours from the closest Apple Store, and the nearest service provider *****.  So my other concern is, if I take the machine to an Apple Store for them to check out, I need it fixed the same day, or exchanged, otherwise I will have to make another trip to go pick up the machine.
I was planning on getting a new iMac when they do the next refresh... I just didn't quite make it.

have you disconnected all peripherals while trying to boot from the DVD, Pat?
Sometimes if they require drivers which aren't available on the DVD then startup will stall.
Disconnect EVEERYTHING except the keyboard and mouse.
Cheers

  • HT201250 Anyone have time machine "lock up" while backing up and not completing the task?

I have the drive connected for over 24 hrs and time machine will only back up 25% of the 75Gb it claims to need to back up.
I have re tried and get the same result, and T.M. will show "backing up" even after 24 hrs.
I know it is not the drive being too full or being defective, since a partition set up for a pc works just fine.

Hi, many people have, but I think you need to Repair the TM Partion, & maybe your Boot drive, maybe more.
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imagine something not being covered there.

  • Making Time Machine scan/back up a separate NAS

I'm slowly loosing the will to live in achieving what I believe should be achievable! Would really appreciate any help or advice anyone can offer.
Like most people I'm paranoid about loosing my extensive picture and home movie library and I'm not yet comfortable with cloud solutions given the weeks and months it takes to upload it, let alone recover it.  So my preferred solution is a NAS system hidden and locked in a modified fire proof box attached to a powerline network adaptor in my home.  We've been using powerline adaptors for a while and the data rate is pretty good.
I have 2 x MacBook Air and the wife and I share our iPhoto and iTunes library's which are stored on a separate NAS (i use a TC to look after these) and accessed via Ethernet (they can be accessed wirelessly, but the fragility of iPhoto means we use only cabled connection when playing with pics)
In short my MBA's are nothing more than "interface" machines with all our content stored on 2 NAS and Dropbox.
Now here is my challenge, I obviously want to back up primarily my iPhoto and iTunes folders to my secure NAS, tucked away nice and cosy in its fireproof box.  But for the love of sweet Jesus I can't seem to get Time Machine to see it (the NAS (TC) holding iPhoto & iTunes) in order to back it up to my fireproof NAS which is also a 3TB TC.
Everytine I go onto TM it asks me to select the back up disk, I select my fireproof TC and it begins happily backing up my MBA, which while handy, really isn't that critical to me, given I'm using it only as an interface device to use and consume content rather than store.
I'm sure I'm not doing something and I've been all over google and various forums but I just got lost in messages about using TM to back up to a NAS.
In short, I need TM to scan TC 1 (iTunes & iPhoto libraries) and back it up to TC 2 (nuclear proof back up NAS).
    I'm running a July 2012 MBA with Lion 10.8.
Any help or advice would be really very much appreciated.
    Many thanks

But for the love of sweet Jesus I can't seem to get Time Machine to see it (the NAS (TC)
Unfortunately, Time Machine cannot back up a network drive.  The drive must be connected directly to your Mac using USB or FireWire.
Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper should be able to backup a network drive. Suggest that you confirm with their support folks about what you want to do.

  • While backing up with Time Machine my MBA restarts

I have MBA Mid 2011 and I am using my Go Flex Home Network drive (NAS) to back up my machine. SInce last couple of days while backing up my MBA is freezing with the white screen and going into a Limbo ( Yes like the the move inception it desnt wake up I had to hard reboot to make it working. I guess there is some problem with a specific file while backing up. What should I do now ? Shoul I format the NAS back up completely and start the TM back up afresh ? Have anybody faced the similar problem.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Cant import iPhoto library. Locks up while "upgrading Library"

I have a new macbook air running OS X Mavericks. I tried to just copy the iphoto library from old mac to the pics library of new mac. I photo locks up while "upgrading library"
Tried to use migration assistant and it says I must first upgrade the OS of the old mac. My old mac cannot upgrade to mavericks, it is too old.
    Suggestions?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Finder locked-up while running Garmin map manager

In Maverick OS, Finder locked-up while running Garmin map manager; can't force quit because Garmin 450 is connected.  Also complicated by Sketch-up app trying to install; several license agreement screens on desktop. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, DCC

    Hello saturdaysaint:
I would try a couple of things:
Run permission repair as a "precaution."
Run repair disk from your software install DVD.
Trash com.apple.finder.plist (the finder preference file).
I never let software updates run automatically - I use the software update manually and then back up before any update.

  • On update to 4.0 Firefox locked up while checking for compatability of applications and will not load.

I have HP a6620f, Vista, 64 bit, 2.5 GHz 4.0 GB RAM. Firefox worked great until I upgraded to 4.0 when it locked up while checking for compatability of applications. I have the desktop ikon but firefox will not come up. Task manager shows firefox.exe using 50% of CPU when terying to come up.

I've since updated manually to 4.0.1, but haven't yet tried the full uninstall version, because I have to export plenty of settings first (and/or manually copy them). Also means I'd have to start from scratch with many customizations in No Script.
That said, I'll try the 'Safe Mode' option tonight, thank you :-)!
If I have to uninstall the whole shebang, I'd be more tempted to go back to 3.6.x until a few more of 4's teething problems (e.g. the messy print dialogues, particularly preview, which regularly doesn't even work) have been tackled.
Thanks-1M! for now - keep you posted.

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a thrid-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Copy music
    - The try syncing. If you synced last time with this computer you should not a have a problem.

  • I had all my files, including bookmarks, backed up to my NAS when my hard drive failed. How do I import these bookmarks to Firefox on my new notebook? Is there a single HTML file I should be looking for on my NAS?

I had all my files, including bookmarks, backed up to my NAS when my hard drive failed. How do I import these bookmarks to Firefox on my new notebook? I can easily find the folder "Favorites" on my NAS, but can't get Firefox to "see" this folder, or my bookmarks.

If you open Firefox then Firefox will always use the default profile folder as found via profiles.ini on your system drive.
You either need to import the file in your current default profile or copy the file to your current profile folder while Firefox is closed.
Firefox 3 stores the bookmarks and the browser history in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/places.sqlite places.sqlite] and no longer creates an HTML backup by default.
There are also (five) JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder within the Firefox profile folder.
You can either copy the file places.sqlite to your [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] or import the most recent JSON backup from the bookmarkbackups folder of that old profile.
    See:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
"Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > "View" tab > under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders".
You may want to un-check the box "Hide extensions for known file types" to see the file extensions of all files.

  • Lost audiobooks on itune from iphone 4 while backing up to icloud

While backing up my data to icloud I lost all my audio books on itunes from my iphone 4 running ios 5. How do i recover back the lost audio books.

To add the same content from the iPhone 4 backup, you can only backup and restore using the original Apple ID (iCloud) and password account.
Content cannot be transferred from one Apple ID to another and accounts cannot be merged as noted here.

  • Error while backing up to IOS 5

    Hello everyone!
I'm trying to update my 3GS to IOS5 and while doing the backup, after 1hr.. this happened.
"An error ocurred while backing up this iPhone (-402636788). Would you like to continue to update this iPhone?
Continuing will result in loss of all contents on this iPhone."
I've been reading about errors all day but the one that appeared to me now, haven't seen before. And still can't find it!
    Please anyone out there... HELP!

I tried several times to update one of my iPads and I first received the error 37. I found somewhere in the Apple pages that you needed to switch off the firewall and some virus scanners that could interfere with the process. After doing that I now get the same 402636788 error message. Nothing is working. By the way, the whole process is ridiculous: a backup is starting after I just did a backup and no feedback whatsoever is given. Based on the progress after an hour, the whole process would take 12 hours just to backup. iTunes is full of bugs and almost never worked properly on any of my machines. I backed up a few times today, every time having a few more apps synched. After like 5 tries, the message some apps are notsynched disappeared.... I could start the update with error messages, and now it still does not work at all. I switched to Apple beginning of this year and didn't have any single problem in 6 months... a dream. In the last few weeks, I had huge problems with all my Apple devices. Upgrade to Lion, my NAS is not accessible anymore, my Time Capsule is unusable due to a known bug !, no solution, as a consequence, I cannot go back to Leopard, some software unusable, two machines with problems, impossible to upgrade my iPads (1 and 2). My son lost all his data while upgrading his iPhone. What kind of joke is this ??? My Apple experience just became a TOTAL nightmare. I don't know if anybody can help me....

  • Computer locks up while running safari

I have an MAC running 10.9.2 mid 2010 - computer locks up while running safari - I have reset safari - not sure what else I could do to fix the problem - at least once a day I have to restart my mac

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report—it will be very long and not helpful.

There is no application called "Adobe" - you are either working with Adobe Acrobat or the free Adobe Reader. Open up the preferences for the application (Edit>Preferences), then go to the "General" category and modify the settings for "Scale for screen resolution". You will have to restart the application after you do that. Does that fix your problems?
