Log and Transfer .dmg is on hard drive but wont mount

Hi All,
I have search the forums for a resolution to this but I couldn't find one. I am a home user for video so I will try to explain what happened as best I can.
I have a Canon Vixia HF20 and I created a disk image from disk utility and placed the image on a separate hard drive that I store all of the images on. I have done this numerous time with this camera in the past.
today I created an image as normal and opened up Final Cut Pro (7.0.3), opened up the log and transfer window, opened up the custom path window and double clicked on the image I created today. the first time I did this, the image opened and I was able to view the video in the log and transfer window. I just viewed the video, did not transfer or add anything to a queue. I then closed FCP.
This evening I tried the exact same thing, but the disk image will not load into FCP. I can see the .dmg on my hard drive, but when I try to open in in FCP to view the video, it will not load now.
Any suggestions? I have repaired permissions on my main hard drive thinking that might help. No go.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Kyle P

Thanks for your help goldfish. I have tried all of that to no avail. I think I found out that when I created the .dmg I somehow used the wrong path. Now when I open up the new .dmg it mounts and image of the entire hard drive with all of the slips except for the new one.
I have done some test video and imported them correctly, but I am now sure I used the wrong path. However, this still does not explain why I was able to see the video the first time I created it.
Anyway, I have no learned (NEVER) delete the video from the camera until you are sure you have the correct disk image. Thankfully the video was not important.
Thanks again for your help.

    - Have you tried the troubleshooting here:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - You can try disabling the camer notification

    - Do you have any camera, scanner or similar software installed?  That may prevent iTunes from seeing the iPod.

  • Can I clone and transfer from the internal hard drive to an external hard drive ?

I got an intel duo iMac, the machine is very good even if it is almost 3 years old. But with the internal hard drive having 320 Gb I am running out of hard drive space. I have looked into changing the internal hard drive but that involves having to send the machine away to have that done. So I was wondering if I could just transfer all the Mac OS X and all the applications and settings within three user accounts to say a 2 TB external hard drive, and boot from that, using cloning software.
Alternatively, is there a way to transfer the iPhoto and iMovie libraries to an external hard drive. That would free up space. I do not know how, if that is possible, although I have managed that with iTunes. My iMac is running Snow Leopard.
              Regards from John5801

    John,
USB should be fine for general computer use, but media may add a little too much for the sustained rate that USB2 provides. In a previous career I did a lot of video editing. Firewire was much preferred in that task because of its stability at higher rates. I can see why the SuperDuper! people might suggest it.
When I cloned the wife's iMac, I had replaced the HDD on the MacBook Pro with a USB pocket drive that I've kept the original MacBook's installation mounted on. I've booted directly to that external drive, so you should be okay if you can make the clone across the USB. When I cloned the wife's machine I booted the MacBook Pro with a fresh HDD in Firewire target mode and connected it as an external Firewire 800 drive. Firewire 800 is much faster, but you'll need the cable and everything to be right.
Firewire has a better reputation among people running a lot of media from their drive. I would suggest that you try and get an external drive kit that can support both. I think your iMac supports both firewire 400 AND firewire 800 along with the 3 USB2 ports. I'm guessing based on my wife's 24" imac. The fastest would be the Firewire 800, but that standard is about to be pushed aside in both cases.
    Hope that helped.

  • I have recently bought a Seagate Goflex satellite mobile wireless hard drive. I have converted some of my AVI movies to mp4 and transferred them to the hard drive, but when I play them through my iPad 2 I can hear the sound but not see the movie. Help???

I have recently bought a Seagate Goflex satellite mobile wireless hardrive , i have converted some of my AVI movies to MP4 and loaded them onto the hard drive, when I try and play them through my I pad2 I can hear the sound of the movie but not see the film, somebody please help, what am I doing wrong as I have spent a lot of time converting these movies to be able to travel with my iPad and watch them. Thank you

Unfortunately, the drive is pretty much restricted without hacking it. That is, you can't stream its content via standardized protocols like UPnP, SMB, FTP and the like. This makes you won't be able to access its content from any third-party apps otherwise capable of playing back AVI files from UPnP / SMB / FTP / WebDAV etc. sources.
While this is certainly not a recommendation (I can in no way be held responsible if anything goes wrong): you may want to consider extending the capabilities of the drive by installing the hack: http://www.hackseagatesatellite.com/wordpress/welcome/
It'll "open" the drive for third-party, AVI-capable multimedia apps like GoodPlayer, It's Playing etc. to directly play the files over the network.

  • HT1751 Can I consolidate my iTunes library and transfer to an external hard drive while my computer is in safe mode?

Laptop died, only works in safe mode.  Am wanting to transfer everythign to an external hard drive and do a reset to if I can save it.

See this migrate iTunes library post. Depending on the layout of the library you may simply need to copy the entire iTunes folder using Windows Explorer without ever firing up iTunes.

  • I transfer iTunes to another hard drive but ipad can't syn with the software

I bought a new computer with Windows 8 installed. I used "Home sharing" to transfer my itunes folder from my older computer to my new computer and that seem to work. Please note on my new system I had to installed the lastest itunes software for my computer.
As always when you first open up iTunes it selects the default location My Music (C:\users\Owners) but I came across a problem. I have a Solid State Drive 120GB but because of all the unnecessary junk they install on your new system, I had to transfer itunes folder from the default location and installed it to my D Driver (3TB).
Now when I transfer from my old computer I went to Edit/Preferences\Advanced and check off "Keep iTunes media Folder organized" and the selected "Change" and select the new location which is my second hard drive "D". Everything seems to transfer ok and yes I did "Authorize the new computer" and "DeAuthorize" the older computer.
I rebooted, updated the software. When I plug in my ipad2 the software seems to recognize it because it shows on the left pane "Gord's ipad". When I go under "info" and selected most boxes that need to be syn it seems to stay stuck on "Contacts" as it shows the bar moving  but nothing is happening.
Then Outlook 2013 pops up an  error stating that "Outlook can't open properly and to click on repair, which it does but everytime I try to syn Outlook error pops up again.
I obviously did something wrong that I can't get my ipad2 to communicate with my new computer. Any suggestions out there.
    Thank-you.

  • Is there a way to transfer files from a hard drive that wont boot up?

my hard drive wont boot up. even when i try to reinstall it says that it cant be reinstalled on the drive, is there a way to get the files off before i wipe it clean? (assuming i can even do that)

If the MacBook has a Firewire port then you could connect it to another Mac with Firewire and use Target Disk Mode to access the drive and transfer files assuming the drive is accessible. Or if you don't have Firewire ports then you can remove the drive, install it in an external enclosure, connect it to another Mac and transfer data if the drive is accessible.
If neither of the above are feasible then you can try using recovery software. Recovery software comes on bootable discs, but you will need an external drive to which the recovered files can be saved.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Installed new version of itunes and now my toshiba external hard drive won't mount

All of my music and photos reside on this Toshiba hard drive. I successfully had itunes find the hard drive for the library. After I installed updated itunes to mac, the toshiba doesn't mount to any of my computers. (I've tried it on more than one) The light on the drive comes on, but I never see it on my desktop. Thank you for your help.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on anoterh computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Just bought a power mac g5. The machien will start up to the install of 10.5 that the orginal owner has but will not boot into the install cd of 10.4, or 10.5. I tried reseating the ram and removing some with no help. I also tried booting from firewire and usb but the machine will not recogonize either of these when i hold down "option".....when i go to try and boot from the cd it will pop up with the string of Kernal information and tell me to reboot. but then if i take the cd out it will boot into the orginal OSX just fine...

    Hello,
What are the 2z691-****-A numbers on the 10.4 & 10.5 Discs?
Are they gray machine specific discs, or the Retail versions?

  • Device not working with Log and Transfer in FCP

I am trying to get some footage off my camera into final cut pro, but Final Cut Pro does not recognise my device when I try to use Log & Transfer
The camera is question is a Cannon Legria FS20, here is a link
    http://www.canon.co.uk/ForHome/Product_Finder/Camcorders/flash_memory/LEGRIAFS20/
I have looked around but can't seem to find any plug-ins to get it to work with Final Cut Pro, does anyone know any way I can get it to work with Log and Transfer
Upon inspecting the hard drive, it saves video files in .MOD format with an .MOI file (which i assume is a metadata file
How can I get it so that my device works with log and transfer?
    Thanks

    Hi -
I did a little Google searching for information on your camera and it appears that it is a Standard Definition Camera that records in the MPEG-2 format.
Log and Transfer only works with High Definition material.
You will need to convert your video clips into a format that will work with FCP.
I know nothing about working in PAL, but you want to download an free application called MPEG Streamclip from
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
This application will convert your MPEG-2 files into a format that you can use directly in FCP.
Once you have converted the files to Apple DV-PAL, with the correct frame rate (25fps?) and field dominance you can either simply drag the converted files into FCP or import them using File > Import.
    Hope this helps.

  • USB2 Hard Drives will not mount under 10.4.11

I have a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MBP, with 2 GB of RAM. Using the 10.4.9 OS and earlier, I had no problems at all mounting and using an external USB hard drive that I use at both work and home. When I updated to 10.4.10, the drive stopped mounting, so I took it and the computer in to the Genius Bar. The only solution he could think of was to roll my OS back to 10.4.9, which worked immediately. The drive started booting again without any problems.
I took my MBP in for an unrelated issue and the Genius at the Genius Bar (same guy who rolled it back, I think) suggested I upgrade and that the USB mounting issue wasn't a problem any more. I upgraded to 10.4.11 and once again, my USB hard drive won't mount.
I have no problems getting it to mount on my XP machine at work and our G4 Mac Mini at home has no trouble with the hard drive either, so I'm positive the drive is fine. The problem is with the OS update to 10.4.11.
My iPod mounts just fine (which is also USB2) and my thumb drives seem to work just fine, but I do have an older drive that has stopped working. Like my external HD, it mounts just fine on other computers.
Does anyone have a fix? The Genius I spoke with when this problem first started suggested I ditch the drive and get a Firewire one, which is a nice thought, but I shouldn't have to replace hardware that works just fine, because something in the OS updates isn't working. Do I have to roll back to 10.4.9 again?
I have to say, this is a bit frustrating, as I already dealt with the problem, was assured it was fixed, and then ran into it again.
    Robb

I recently had a similar issue (different conditions, same issue) and here is what I posted, maybe it can help you:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1638087&tstart=0
I didn't mention another possible solution mentioned somewhere else: replace certain kernel extensions in your 10.4.10 or 11 installation with those present in 10.4.9: "IOHIDFamily.kext", "IOUSBFamily.kext" and "IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext" (using Pacifist).
An update to this post: now my external disk doesn't mount again. I'm pretty sure the disk is OK, as it mounts in different machines and it works fine thru the USB 1 interface (keyboard hub).
I tried the solution's point two (deleting kext caches) and it worked pretty fine... Until the next restart. Doesn't work anymore. USB Prober (point three) no go. I think I'll try replacing the kernel extensions. It was reported as successful, but I'm currently running 10.5.4 and I don't feel inclined to use 10.5.3. I would use better 10.4.9 ones, which were mostly reported as OK, but doesn't seem a pretty safe operation.
Anyway, my external HD was working fine under 10.5.4 in a different machine and doesn't work in this new one (also 10.5.4), so I'm not sure about the results, but I won't trash this external HD, as it works fine in every other machine except for this one
Already many posts regarding USB issues, I hope Apple fixes this ASAP, as most of peripherals today are purely USB-based. I think this issue regards usually to external HDs. Surely some simple lines of code mangled across the various OS updates

  • Log and Transfer to edit... How do I save to a hard drive?

I have a new Canon XA10, and I use Log and Transfer to download my videos to my computer and edit. How do I save them onto an external hard drive as to not take up so much space on my computer?

I was going to say to set up your scratch disk, but you are using FCPX, and this is the FCS forum... I don't know how the other program functions so you'll want to post in the correct forum.

  • I can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name

can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name. My original external has an error and needs to be reformatted but I dont want to lose this informations its my entire Itunes library.

Sounds like the source drive is formatted as case sensitive and the destination drive is not. The preferred format for OS X is case insensitive unless there is a compelling reason to go case sensitive.
Why can't you change the filename? Is it because the source drive is having problems?  If so is this happening with only one or two or a few files? If so the best thing would be to copy those over individually and then rename them on the destination drive.
If it is more then you can do manually and you can't change the name on the source you will have to reformat the destination as case sensitive.
Btw this group is for discussion of the Support Communities itself, you;d do better posting to Lion group. I'll see if a host will move it.

i have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk through disk utilities without erasing data (but will it delete my programs such as photoshop, office, creative suite?

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.
