Log and Transfer File Naming

When AVCHD files are imported with log and transfer, it designates a file name number sequence that includes the "#" sign both in the browser and on the external hard drive that it copies to. How can I eliminate this "#" sign and have it still assign a different number for each file?
Thanks in advance to any and all help

The clip number us assigned in the camera. You would have to manually remove the # mark in the log and transfer window before the shot was transcoded.

  • Final Cut Express Log and Transfer files not playing audio on another mac

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro for video editing for work, and am having some issues with it. Previously i was working on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.11, on Final Cut Express 4.
I used Log & Transfer to get the AVCHD videos from my Canon HF 11 onto my mac, and had no issues. Where my problems started was when I moved my video files to my new Mac Pro running OS 10.5.6. Now when I open those video files in either Quicktime or FCE, the VIDEO plays but _not the audio_. I thought maybe the video files were bad, but when I tried the original files on the new Mac, they still didn't work. I don't know if there's some codec that isn't on the new mac or if there's some other problem... I just know that my new amazing machine cannot play the files that my 3 year old one can. I'm not new to computers, but I'm not an Apple guru. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I can try trashing the files, but I can't log and transfer the files again, as it's months of footage that aren't on the camera anymore. But i did find something else out. The files that were recorded with the camera's built-in mic recording is fine and with sound, but the files that I used my wireless mic setup had no sound. I don't know why that is, because they worked fine on the MacBook Pro. I tried log and transferring a new clip on the Mac Pro wit;h footage using the wireless mic, and still no sound.

  • Canon T2i log and transfer, file size HUGE

Hi everyone. I need help understanding why my canon t2i files are so large in fcp 7. i've downloaded and modified the script for canon os plugin for tcp, so i can use the log and transfer feature. i have the preferences set to apple 422

This is a question for the Final Cut Studio forum. Your clips are being transcoded to ProRes, which are much larger than the original H.264.

  • Log and transfer files from sd card?

Is it possible to utilize log and transfer form the SD card shot on a Canon DSLR in FCP to transcode to ProRes 422?  Is there a plug in plug in?

I downloaded the canon software and it works like a charm on the MacBook Pro but I seem to be having an installation issue with the plug in into FCP on the Power Mac G5 ... it doesn't show up as an option when in Preferences in the log and transfer window.  I am using a usb card reader and the card is mounting on the desktop and there are no photo images on the card ... Are there issues with the G5 - OSX 4.11- FCS 6.06 or an external usb sd card reader?

  • CANNOT LOG AND TRANSFER FILES FROM PANASONIC P2 CARD

I rented a Panasonic Ag-hpx170 to shoot footage for my son's high school today. After filling two p2 cards with video, I transferred the content to my hard drive (exactly as described in Tom Wolsky's book, and as coached by the video rental company). I have two folders on my drive from the two p2 files, but when I try to bring them into FInal Cut Express (4.0.1) , I get the message:
"HUNTER INTERVIEWS CARD 1" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
There's a whole day of footage in there, and I'm panicked that I've lost it (and that the next two days' shooting will be ruined, as well).
The footage was shot in 720x25. I set the "easy settings" on FCE to the Apple Intermediate codec format, using HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720p25.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I'm starting to really worry I'm going to disappoint a lot of kids!

Well, this may not be the same for you, but I think I had a similar problem with my Canon FS200. It was a hassle, but I was able to get the footage. I bought an Apple Product, it was called something along the lines of Quicktime Converter Mpeg-2, it's an upgrade for final cut and it works automatically. But in addition to that, I downloaded a free software from the internet called Mpeg Streamclip. You then open the file with that software, and hit "Export to quicktime". That SHOULD work for you, it did for me.

  • Canon Log and Transfer problem

    Hello all,
I'm trying to upload some HD files from my Canon HF20 on the latest edition of FCP to my iMac 10.58 and running into a problem.
FCP recognizes the video captured on the internal memory. However, it does not recognize the video captured on the SD card in the camera.
    Any ideas?

Well, I'm connected to my iMac using a USB. (iMac is running version 10.58 of Leopard). I'm using the latest version of FCP 7.0.2
I can log and transfer files "taped" to the internal memory of my HF20. Files show up fine and import fine.
However, the files that are on the SD card in the camera don't show up in the Log and transfer. ( I put the SD card on a card reader and still no luck.)
I put the card back into the camera and hit the "Add volume" on the top left of the log and transfer and I can see my Canon drive and the other drive which is called "No Name" (I'm assuming simply because I haven't named it anything) I'm also assuming the No Name Drive is the SD card. However, I may be wrong. All the files are grayed out on this drive.
Not sure what else I need to add to give you more info. Let me know if what other info needed and I'll post it.
    Thanks again!

  • Log and transfer inevitably crashing FCP

We're editing a couple of music video in FCP 6.0.1.
we shot with an HMC150 so the clips are being uploaded from an SDHC in an AVCHD folder via log and transfer. the first video went relatively fine barring several problems with log and transfer (files not matching thumbnails, files corrupting, FCP crashing) the problems seem to be random and inconsistent, as issues like a misplaced thumbnail or corrupted import could be reopened and fixed so there was no way to tell exactly why each thing was happening. eventually it all subsided and work went smoothly.
went on to finish video number two and after several imports the log and transfer feature has decided to be the death of the project. Choosing log and transfer inevitably leads to an almost instant crash of FCP unless all drives it's reading from are disconnected. reinserting any drive means an instant crash. the drives are not corrupt and function just fine with any and all other programs, even imovie.
why in the world can't i get FCP to stay alive when i open the log and transfer? please help.

Right - I've solved this one. It turned out that I'd recorded some 1080p50 footage. The mere presence of this on the card freaked Log & Transfer. The camera doesn't make it easy by hiding that footage when you're looking at 1080i25 (or whatever "normal" mode is).

  • Log and transfer - E1 plugin

I downloaded the Canon E1 plugin for my Canon 60D, but it doesn't seem to work in FCP 7. The log and transfer screen brings up nothing. Do I need a card reader? I go straight from the camera and it defaults to iPhoto. What should my setting be in FCP's Easy Setup? So many format/codecs..Clueless. I'm shooting 1080 24fps.
    Thanks!

    Shane,
I'm having the same problem as Schmoel...  I have a 60D.  When I plug in the camera, it does not show up on the desktop.  And the EOS plug-in doesn't allow me to log and transfer files.  I watched your video twice, and though you mention at the start that you will talk about a hack for the T2i, I don't see it in the video.
    Can you help?
    Thanks!

  • I need to know best way to edit MXF files, with least rendering, is that converting the MXF or Log and Transfer? the end product is dvd, but I have lots and lots of these projects to do.

I am about to comence my Edit, and was told of Mpeg Streamclip, however this doesn't seem to work with my Canon XF305 Clips, the reason I was told to use it was so I wouldn't have to Render in Final Cut Pro all the time.. I do have the Canon Disc with the Plug in Utility and the update from their site.
Is it best to Convert these MXF files first and import them into FCP or use 'Log and Transfer', so far I am unable to do either!!
The projects on the timeline will have introduction .Movs already on it as a Template to re-use again and again with the new Footage ( MXF Files ) to be added and edited with transitions etc..This process is repeated again and again but with different MXF clips each time.
I am looking for the quickest and best way for workflow as there are 80 or more projects to do, each with 10 or so clips to be added to the timeline and Exported for DVD...Will I have to then Compress to fit onto DVD's??
I know Streamclip is an Mepeg 2 app but I thought the Canon XF305 Shot as mpeg2....
Is Log and Transfer my only Option?
Basically I need to know the quickest for Render purposes, and of course, the best way so the files aren't so huge etc etc.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly received....

We only work with PR422 files in FC7.  We use Shane's workflow with all 5D & MXF footage.
Make your life easier and stick to the ProRes family for your footage and edit sequences. Avoid H264 & convert any you have to ProRes.
Unless you are considering Blu-Ray the only way to deliver video on a DVD is to convert it to SD.
Depending on the length of your show you can make a Blu-Ray in Compressor but you have very limited authoring options when compared to DVD Studio Pro.
Compressor can also convert your HD to SD mpg-2 & Ac3 files. The best results usually come from setting the frame controls in the mpg-2 setting of Compressor to best. Depending on the the length of the show and your Qmaster settings this can take quite a while.
I personally find Compressor's HD to SD DVD conversion varies. Sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes not so much. I prefer the following as it is usually is faster and very consistent.
Export a quicktime movie (not QT conversion) of your final sequence
Import the exported HD file back into FC.
Create a SD 16x9 sequence and then drop in the recently exported HD seq and render. Rendering the sequence basically has FC doing the HD to SD conversion. Export the SD sequence and then convert to mpg-2 & ac3 in Compressor. While this does take time I still find it faster than Compressor with Qmaster utilizing all cores.
Another option is using jobs in Compressor
    http://pixelcorps.cachefly.net/macbreak-154-540p-h264.mov
In this workflow you would have Compressor convert the HD file to SD and then through jobs convert the SD file to mpg2 & Ac3.
In theory the jobs version could be faster (based on a number of variables- length, Qmaster, etc) but I haven't had time to compare the two.

  • Unknown Error when I Logging and Transfer P2 Card files in FCP 6.0.6

I have been trying for the past two week to Log and Transfer P2 files to my external hardrive using FCP 6.0.6 unsuccessfully.
Originally I tried to Log and Transfer directly from the Panasonic HPX-170 in between my shooting. The first time it was a success but from then on I always get the same Unknown Error when attempting to transfer. When I encountered the Unknown Error during the second transfer I went on to create folders with the P2 contents on my external Hard Drive.
When I drag any of the P2 folder content on the Log and Transfer window I can see all the clips. I can successfully transfer small B-roll clips I have but any big size file (all my interviews) return an Unknown Error symbol at the end of the transfer. I believe this is probably why I didn't encounter any issues during my first time.
I tried deleting the preferences in FCP and then Logging and Transfer and it works if the systems settings are set for the Mac Pro but not for the external HD. The problem is I don't have enough space on my Mac. I have cleared 45GB of space but my P2 files total 54GB. I tried the same process with a Mac Power Book with FCP 5.1.4 and again in encounter the same problem.
The external HD is a 1TB Western Digital that I have used before with FCP for editing but never before with P2 files. Its in good working order and has 79GB free space remaining. Both the camera and the P2 cards (16GB and 4GB) are also performing as expected.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

Hard Drive:  The Hard Drive is on my camera (Sony Handycam)
Just needed some info on what is going on with your particular system.
Knowing the exact camera model will also assist us.
If this camera is standard AVCHD you should be able to connect with USB to Mac with FCE open and use Log and Transfer without all the fiddling around converting etc.
What FCE does during ingest is convert files to AIC. (Apple Intermediate Codec)
FCE cannot read the individual files in the BDMV folder, that's why all the converting is required when you use that method.
BTW: regards formatting drives/cards/memory on cameras; it is wise to use the actual device to format rather than a computer. This is a prime cause of read/write goof ups with solid state media. This applies to still or video cameras.
Keeping the COMPLETE card/memory structure in tact is vital for successful transfers.

  • Not all files work in log and transfer

Hoping maybe someone has found a fix to this issue...
When editing an HDV project not all my .m2t files (all in the same folder) want to transfer using Log and Transfer.  Most of the files will transfer correctly but sometimes it skips a file and puts a red exclamation mark in the status.  Not sure why most files work and a few don't when they are all from the same folder and from the same shoot.  The files will open fine in other 3rd party apps so the files are ok.
Thanks in advance for any help!

FCP may be a bit more discriminating on the file structure or header integrity, dunno, never shot HDV myself but we've seen similar posts for years. Try copying the files to your drive first and then ingesting.
Side note, ust because other apps can open the files doesn't mean they are intact or useable. You don't mention what these apps are but if you can export form them, do that and then ingest the new file which might have all of its glitches reparied to suit FCP.

  • Log and Transfer - what happens to the source files?

I'm an experienced FCE4 user, but am using Log and Transfer for the first time with my new Canon Vixia HF M30 camera. Icons for the converted files are showing up in the Browser in FCE4, but where are the underlying converted flies? I didn't copy them from the camcorder to my hard drive when I started the process.

Log and Transfer behaves the same way as Capture. The files are transferred to the Capture Scratch folder on your scratch disk.

  • Hey, I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera, whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there, please help !

    Hey,
I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera.
Whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there,
    please help !

FCE 4.0.1 can only capture DV/HDV which is produced by cameras using Mini-DV TAPES and cameras shooting AVCHD which is a high definition format.
If your camera shoots standard definition on Memory Cards, DVDs or Hard Drives it will not work in FCE.
What is your camera's exact model name and number?

  • Efficient way get FCE4 Log and Transfer to read .mts files stored on drive?

    Hi All
I've searched the FCE discussion forum and not found an answer verified by more than one user to this question: What is an efficient way to get FCE4 (via the Log and Transfer window) to see .mts files from an AVCHD camera stored on a drive (NOT via the camera -- directly from the drive)?
I am trying to plan the most space-efficient system possible for storing un-transcoded .mts files from a Panasonic AG-HMC151 on a harddrive so that I can easily ingest them into FCE4. I am shooting a long project and I want to be able to look at .mts files so that I can decide which ones to transcode to AIC for the edit.
Since FCE4 cannot see .mts files unless they have their metadata wrapper the question is really 'how do I most efficiently transfer .mts files from the camera to a storage harddrive with their metadata wrappers so that FCE4 can see them via the log and transfer window?'
Nick Holmes, in a reply in this thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10423384&#10423384
gives 2 options: Use the Disk Utility to make a disk image of the whole SD card, or copy the whole contents of the card to a folder. He says he prefers the first option because it makes sure everything on the card is copied.
    a) Have other FCE users done this successfully and been able to read the .mts files via Log and Transfer?
In a response to this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10257620&#10257620
wallybarthman gives a method for getting Log and Transfer to see .mts files that have been stored on a harddrive without their metadata wrappers by using Toast 9 or 10.
    b) Have any other FCE4 users used this method? Does it work well?
    c) Why is FCE4 unable to see .mts files without their metadata wrappers in the Log and Transfer window? Is it just a matter of writing a few lines of code?
    d) Is there an archiving / library app. on the market that would allow one to file / name / tag many .mts clips and view them prior to transcoding into space-hungry AIC files in FCE?
Any/all help would be most gratefully received!

I have saved the complete file structure on DVD as a backup, but have not needed to open them yet. But I will add this. As I understand the options with Toast you are infact converting the video to AIC or something like it. I haven't looked into it myself, but I can't imagine the extra files are that large, but maybe there are significant, I don't know. The transcoded files are huge in comparison to the AVCHD file.
A new player on the scene for AVCHD is Clipwrap 2.0. As I understand this product. It rewraps the AVCHD into a wrapper the Quicktime can open and play. This is with the MTS files only, the rest of the file structure is not needed. The rewrap is much faster that the transcode to AIC. So you have the added benefit of being able to play the files as well as not storing the extra files. The 2.0 version (which is for AVCHD) was just recently released. I haven't tried it and don't personally know of anyone who has. You might want to try this, there is a trial version as I recall.
