Log and Transfer import wrong section.

When I import video using Log and Transfer sometimes the video imported it is not the same as the section I marked. What could this be?

Thank you for your response. The problem is not that I can't find the imported footage - the clips import into my project. I have a lot of footage (interviews) so I am picking out sections to import so as not to have to import entire hour-long clips. In Log and Transfer I mark in and out points and then import. Sometimes this works fine but sometimes the clip that I import does not match up with what I thought I had marked in L&T. So for example, in L&T I mark the In and Out around someone saying "XXX" but then once its imported its a different part of the interview "YYY". I though the problem was with the cursor (because it also sometimes acts wierd and won't go to the spot I click on or drag it too - others seem to have encountered this problem too. So I went through the video and wrote down the Ins and Outs for the sections I wanted and entered them in manually. Still, the sections imported did not match.
I hope this clarifies my question.
Thanks!

#36 - One or More files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the camera card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the Log and Transfer Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the Log and Transfer Import window...in the Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

  • Log and Transfer in Background causing big problems

I don't know if you are supposed to be able to have Log and Transfer importing in the background while you edit, but it seems to allow me to do this, but I have found a VERY BAD side effect.
Log and Transfer goes about it's business importing, but if I click around in the the bin, playback other files that are already imported, etc.  Log and Transfer will not fully import the clips it is working on.  BUT, instead of giving me ANY error, it simply thinks it did it's job.  The end results is a clip in my bin that is maybe 10 seconds long and the matching clip on the SD card is 5 minutes!  No error messages anywhere.
At first I thought I had accidently stopped recording on a good number of my clips.  I was freaking out.  Thankfully I found that the clip on the SD card was the full 5 minutes long.  When I reimported it (without doing anything in FCP at the same time) the full clip came in.  (THANKFULLY I had a disk image of the SD card and wasn't just relying on my backup for the FCP files post import).
Now I just make sure not to do anything in FCP while it's importing from Log and Transfer, but it seem like quite a dicey situation that could get people in a log of trouble.

Me too.  I've learned the lesson.  But I thought FCP used to NOT allow this.  It would beep and not let me do anything else.
I'm sad they let you do it, because someone can do it without realizing importing is still going on and mess things up and not realize it until down the road in the edit and be screwed.

  • Log And Transfer - HDR-SR12 - Surround Sound

Hi, is it possible to get surround sound via Log and Transfer in FC from Sony HDR-SR12? I have no problems to get video and stereo, but when I record surround on the camera and try to import it to FC, I get "Audio is mixed down to stereo" message in Log And Transfer Import Setting.
    Thanks.

Shouldn't be the same size of the file in the camera?
    Hey Nicko,
No mate. The camera format is a heavily compressed MPEG4 variant (AVCHD). This is a modern acquisition format, and not a camera native edit format supported directly within FCP. The AVCHD support offered by FCP is through Log and Transfer which transcodes the files to a more edit friendly format that you can work with. The choices at present are AIC and ProRes. You could recompress them again if you wanted to a more compressed (smaller) format, but you'd lose time and quality, and disc space is cheap these days.

  • Log and Transfer - Mystery Clips Appear?

Whenever I go to import P2 media using the Log and Transfer mode in Final Cut Pro 7, I'm getting these mystery clips labled "Clip #1, Clip #2.. all they way up to Clip #344 and it indicates they reside on my external media drive.  Most of the clips have no related media, that is, nothing appears in the thumbnail or name block-- its just black.  Now, there are a few that do have thumbnails representing video clips but when try to view any related media, nothing shows.  It seems they could be from a non-P2 import from a long time ago, yet the media no longer exists. I can click on one of the clips and eject, which makes them all disappear, but I also get the message "This volume cannot be unmounted because it is being used for importing."  Which is strange as I never import from this volume.  Rather, I either import from an internal drive or from a network drive.
If I do a Find (command + F) in Finder and type in Clip #1, it cannot find anything on the external media drive or anywhere else.  I'm wondering if it has something to do with some legacy Prefs but I've dumped those and restarted and still get these mystery clips.  And this is EVERY time I go to Log and Transfer.  I can exit Log and Transfer and, in the same session, go back and there are those mystery clips! Again.
    Anybody have any ideas?  Thanks!

Maybe I wasn't clear:  I have no trouble loading or viewing my P2 card media (which is already off-loaded onto an archive drive and then transcoded-- via Log and Transfer-- to my media drive.)  Its that every time I open Log and Transfer, these mystery clips appear.  If I eject them, I get the error message mentioned.  If I don't, I can still load my P2 media and the mystery clips are listed below the actual P2 media I am looking to use.
And I have dumped my prefs repeatedly and still the mystery clips survive.
I think my issue resides in the Log and Transfer Import Preferences.  If I could only clean those up, as I see one of my options is MPEG2 Consumer Cameras (??), maybe that would help.
    Thanks!

  • Why is there an 'Error: No Data' sign when importing in Log and Transfer?

    Hello,
I am trying to import clips from my Panasonic HDC-SD100 camcorder into Final Cut Express 4. I am using the Log and Transfer window and am able to import most of my clips. However, every time I import there are a handful of clips that are left idle and an 'Error: No Data' sign appears next to them. They have not been imported to the Scratch Disk, and yet there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them because they playback on the viewing screen in the Log and Transfer window. Can anyone help me to determine what is wrong?
    Many thanks.

Some of the descriptions you are using are kind of confusing.
"first 2 controls of each DO line(s)"
"button 1 of DO lines 1 and DO lines 2"
"control 2 of DO lines 1 and DO lines 2"
What is the difference between "button 1" and "control 2".  I am going to assume you mean the same thing when you say "button" vs. "control" but just decided to change terminology in mid-sentence
You need to write out a Truth table to describe what you need done.  The way you have the description written, you are already using the word "OR" to describe the different situations.  That is going to be a key part of your program.
    This shows:
    (DOlines button1 AND button2)  OR
    (DOlines2 button1  AND button2) OR
    (DOlines button1 AND DO lines2 button1)  OR
    (DOlines button2 AND DO lines2 button2)

  • Having Problems Importing Video From Camcorder ( Log and Transfer?)

    Hi everyone
Today i received my Canon HF11
    It records AVCHD format.
I'm pressing log and transfer, and it comes up, however when i press 'add to queue' it will be added, then an icon comes and spins for a few seconds, then it'll stop and turn into a red octagon with an exclamation mark in the middle
A few people have said 'Choosing plain stereo fixes it' - but it hasn't, and i've changed pretty much everything to 'apple intermediate codec.
I've done 'easy setup' and changed it to HD, FPS to all formats.. i'm trying to kind of match everything but it's not working for me
I have a 2.4Ghz Aluminium Macbook, With Final Cut Express 4.0 trying to import with AVCHD
    Please Help

Trash your preferences. They've probably been corrupted changing to the wrong format. There is only one correct setting that matches your media. Select that.

Hard Drive:  The Hard Drive is on my camera (Sony Handycam)
Just needed some info on what is going on with your particular system.
Knowing the exact camera model will also assist us.
If this camera is standard AVCHD you should be able to connect with USB to Mac with FCE open and use Log and Transfer without all the fiddling around converting etc.
What FCE does during ingest is convert files to AIC. (Apple Intermediate Codec)
FCE cannot read the individual files in the BDMV folder, that's why all the converting is required when you use that method.
BTW: regards formatting drives/cards/memory on cameras; it is wise to use the actual device to format rather than a computer. This is a prime cause of read/write goof ups with solid state media. This applies to still or video cameras.
Keeping the COMPLETE card/memory structure in tact is vital for successful transfers.

  • Is there a way to import clips from AVCHD folders I have copied from my camcorder to my hard disk? With FCE I could import these clips using log and transfer.

In FCP-X is there a way to import AVCHD clips from an AVCHD file folder I have copied from my Canon hard disk camcorder to my iMac hard disk?  With FCE I used log and transfer with no problem; but, FCP-X doesn't import them. It will import AIC files that have been created in FCE from the original AVCHD files.  If FCP-X will not import these files directly from the copied AVCHD folder, is there a workaround using other software to convert the files? For example, Compressor? (Canon does not provide any AVCHD conversion software for OSX).

    Hi jphil and Tom
I have exactly the same problem but the answer you (Tom) provided did not help in my case. Trying to "Import ->From Camera" and pointing to the AVCHD folder yields the error message: "(Folder) contains unsupported files or has invalid directory structure."
    Folder structure is
    AVCHD
         BDMV
              CLIPINF
                   .CPI files
              Index.bdm
              Movieobj.bdm
              PLAYLIST
                   .MPL file
              STREAM
                   .MTS files
    AVF_INFO
         3 files (.bnp, .inp, .int)
    DCIM
         101MSDCF
              empty
         MODELCFG.IND (file)
My question is: Is that not a "camera archive" of the type you talked about in the thread? Is it on principle not possible to import the files in that format/directory structure? If not, since the shots were not taken by myself, what should I ask the guy who shot the movies to give me to be able to work with them in FC?
I work with a brand new Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4 (still very clumsy with it) on an iMac 11,3 with MacOS 10.6.8.
I downloaded the latest version of codec updates from the Apple support site but no difference.
    Thank you in advance

  • Import P2 over FireWire like Final Cut Log and Transfer?

    Hello,
The ONE issue keeping me from using Premiere (which came with my Master Collection CS5) is that I can't seem to import files from my Panasonic HVX200 in a simple way.   In trusty old Final Cut I can easily do it using Log and Transfer.  Rename files.  Log them in any way I like.  Then drag them in, converted to the format of my choice.  Cha ching!  If I could get the same functionality in Premiere, then I'd never need upgrade my Final Cut again.
    Thoughts?  Suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Josh

Shooternz, thank you for clarifying.  I see your point.  I'm glad that works for you.  It sounds like you've really found a good way to work in Premiere.  Your advocacy for that way of working is compelling.
Here are my concerns.  Since you asked, "What's the dificulty?"  I'm not a pure video editor.  I'm a multimedia producer who shoots video, photos, creates tons of graphics, audio files, and a million other varied tasks, incuding needing raw files way into the future for edit in many programs.  If all I did was edit video then it would be fine.  Lots of random files, forgotten about later.  No big deal.  But, for me, I'll need those source files again.  And I'll want them when I jump to After Effects, ScreenFlow, or need a single fram to screen cap.  I won't want the whole Premiere Project.  Just one quick file.
Also, I recall very vividly when Adobe dumped Premiere for mac.  So, I have no intention of relying on it as my long-term file management solution.  Once bitten... as the old cliche goes.
Finally, what about Log and Transfer is tedious?  I find it relaxing.  Honestly.  When I said "elegant" I meant it.  It's one of my favorite bits of software.  And don't we all have our little favorites?  There are all the files on my card.  Now I'm watching to see which takes I like.  I name them, drag the winners into the box below.  It's worth any wait as far as I'm concerned.  Then the files are name clearly in my folder.
In the end, my feeling is that if Premiere really wants to play hardball, they ought to step up and help everyone with whatever workflow get files in, using the method they like.  It's a shame because they are 1/2 way there with the File Browser thing.  They could just add on bit of functionality, "Import to 'file' in 'format'."  Cha ching!

  • Hey, I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera, whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there, please help !

    Hey,
I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera.
Whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there,
    please help !

FCE 4.0.1 can only capture DV/HDV which is produced by cameras using Mini-DV TAPES and cameras shooting AVCHD which is a high definition format.
If your camera shoots standard definition on Memory Cards, DVDs or Hard Drives it will not work in FCE.
What is your camera's exact model name and number?

  • Can't Import Sony AVCHD Using Log and Transfer

    HI
I have been importing AVCHD footage from all kinds of cameras, mainly Panasonics for over 4 years now using Final Cut Pro 7.  I just got a new Sony NEX-EA50 but when I try to import the footage using Log and Transfer, it does not show up.  When I try to drop the card folder into the window I get the ""PRIVATE" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media." message.
The only way I can import the footage is using Toast, but that is a pain in the *** because it is a hassle to rename and scan the clips before I import.
Does anybody know whats going on?  Did Sony purposely change their file directory system so it couldn't be read by FCP?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
What framerate did you shoot ?
Log and Transfer will not recognise non standard frame rates such as 50 fps or 60fps. Toast, Clipwrap etc is an option but there is another. If you have the Panasonic AVCCAM importer Quicktime plug in, it will allow you to convert to Pro Res through Mpeg Streamclip or Compressor.
    DM
Hang on, are you pointing log and transfer at the ROOT folder and not the folders inside.

  • Best way to import MTS (AVCHD)/missing clips using Log and Transfer

My footage (Sony HDR 500) of an average project consists of approximately 10 hours film and 1600 clips. When I use the option Log and Transfer to import in FCE not all clips are imported in FCE. All other clips are consecutively numbered and cannot be compared with the numbering of the clips on the camera anymore. As a result it is, with those large amounts of clips, almost impossible to find out which clips are missing.
Importing takes a very long time (is that normal?) so I would like to run this proces at night, but due to this missing clips problem I am afraid to do this so it is not a good option for me. Does anyone recognize this problem?
To avoid all this I now convert all clips with Voltaic to .mov before importing. At least I know for sure that I have all clips imported, but it is so cumbersome and it takes a lot of time too. This proces I do in steps because I am afraid to start everything at once. After converting the project almost takes 120 GB.
It takes days before everything is imported and that frustrates me. If the same material is imported in Edius for example it only takes an hour (tested) so it appears to be an FCE/Apple problem. Is there any way to accelerate?
I am working with an iMac from 2010, 2,8GHz quadcore i7, 16GB intern geheugen met snow leopard.
I hope someone can help me out.
    Thanks, Jacqueline

While I have not seen the exact problem you describe, 1600 clips is a lot of clips to import at once - so is 10 hours of video.
If you are using FCE to Log & Transfer directly from the camera, your clips are automatically being transcoded to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec(AIC) during importing, which explains the long time it takes to ingest the clips.
Also, QT/AIC files are much, much larger than the AVCHD clips in your camera.  If you are shooting 1920x1080 video, 10 hours of AVCHD translates into roughly 450GB of QT/AIC clips.  It is possible that you may be a) running out of disk space, or b) exceeding the scratch disk minimum allowable free space set in FCE > System Settings.  If so, that could explain why not all your clips are being imported - FCE is probably stopping the Log & Transfer process when it hits the disk space limit.
Regarding alternatives, I'm not so sure about Voltaic.  The Voltaic documentation says it only supports H.264 in QT/.mov files, and that would not be usable in FCE.  Check some of those clips to see what codec they are.  I suspect they are H.264.  (Also, you referred to the converted clips taking 120GB space, which just happens to match the AVCHD storage capacity of your camera ... and AVCHD is a form of H.264 video, so they take up about the same disk space.)
In order to edit your clips in FCE, they need to be QT/AIC.  Two alternatives come to mind - Clipwrap and MPEG Streamclip.  Both can convert AVCHD video to QT/AIC, and both support batch conversion.  If it were me, I'd consider Clipwrap first, for this volume of material, since Clipwrap was specifically designed for AVCHD.
The reason importing is so much faster in Edius is that it can import & directly edit AVCHD clips; Edius basically just copies the clips from the camera to your hard drive.  FCE has to convert the clips to QT/AIC first, before you can edit the video, and that takes considerable time.

  • How to import Canon FS100 footage (.MOD) via Log and Transfer?

I have a Canon FS100 video camera. I records in standard definition 480p video, and saves the files in the .MOD format. Lately, I've just been using iMovie to edit my videos because it can easily import to files. Final Cut Express cannot, though, as far as I'm aware. What I've been doing is copying the files onto my computer, then using a convertor to convert the MOD files into .MOV files, but then FCE has trouble editing it. It causes it to have to render after each edit. Is there an easier way to edit my video? I've tried converting the MOD files into other formats such as DV video, but it still has the rendering problem. My FS100 doesn't show up in the Log and Transfer window of FCE. Is there a way I can make it appear? Thanks.

.mod files are a problem. Are you shooting in 4:3 or 16:9 mode?
What app are you using to convert them ... and what are you converting them to?
The .moi files are index information associated with the .mod files that contain the actual video.
MPEG Streamclip should be able to convert the .mod files. You may need the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Componen, if you don't already have it on your Mac. ($20 download from the Apple Store). (You may need to change the .mod file extension to .mpg then open it in MPEG Streamclip.) If you are shooting 4:3 then in MPEG Streamclip convert the videos to QuickTime using Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression (this is a selection on the conversion screen).
