Log and transfer in Final Cut Pro (final cut pro discussion wouldnt open)

Hello, I am having trouble importing files from my HVX200a into FCP. In the log and transfer window everything plays fine and in realtime. However, after I add them to my Queue and try to play them back in the preview window of FCP they play back in slow motion and half of the clip has disappeared. Some of the clips play back fine, others do what I just described...any ideas? Thanks!

#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
In the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

I can't not transfer files in 'log and transfer' of Final Cut Pro. I recorded it in SD card using Nikon D7000 and JVC GY-HM100U.
I think I need plug-in.  Please let me know.  Thank you.

Well, the Nikon D7000 footage cannot be logged and transferred.  There is no plugin for that like there is for the Canon cameras. Nikon never developed one.  So the footage from that camera will need to be converted with Compressor or MPEG STREAMCLIP.
The JVC should work...what version of FCP are you on?

  • Log and Transfer: Options besides Apple Pro Res 422 ?

Hi,  I am now using a camcorder that records files to a card. When I use Log and Transfer in FCP, the resulting files default to Apple Pro Res 422, which are absolutely huge.  Is there a way to set this up to transfer to a smaller file type, maybe of a quality similar to HDV?
    Thanks, BOb

There's a reason HDV files are small - they're highly compressed files.  Final Cut is a professional product - it's built for high quality video, which requires storage space.
In some instances can change Log and Transfer preferences to transcode to ProRes422 LT, which is a lighter weight version of ProRes422.  The files will be smaller, but they probably won't be as small as you're hoping they will be.
Open the Log and Transfer window.  On the upper region there will be a gear, pick that and pick preferences.  Find the camera type you're using and change the Target Format to ProRes422 LT if possible.  As you did not tell us what kind of camera this is it is impossible to tell which one you need to change.
All that said, storage is pretty cheap.  If you don't do a whole lot of editing a 320gb G-Drive Slim for $80 would be a great investment.  If that isn't an option and you really need small files I would suggest editing in iMovie.  I believe it converts everything to H.264, which is very small in comparison to ProRes.  Don't try editing H.264 in FCP.

  • Log and transfer not working with Sony NX5??

Hello to all knowledgeable Final Cut Pro users!
When I first got my Sony NX5 I would shoot and plug the SD card into my mac book pro, select log and transfer in Final Cut (6.0.6), and there the footage would be! And it would transfer and all was wonderful. On my most recent job I was alarmed to find no footage showing up in Final Cut and no apparent way to get it off the card through FCP. Ever since this stressful event I haven't been able to get the footage off my SD cards through FCP and I really need to start editing this footage by tomorrow!  Sometimes it says error with the file structure and other times it says nothing and just won't open any files.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Why it would be working and then suddenly stop working? Any ideas how to fix it? I've seen a few people talking about having to download other programs but they seem to be hit and miss too.
Any advice will be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Maia

    Hi Shane,
I'm having this same issue but I have 7.0.3. FCP keeps crashing when I try to open the PRIVATE folder into the L&T. I posted my case in another thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3621089?tstart=0
Do you know why? Could you help me?
    Thanks a lot,

  • Log and Transfer - panasonic HDC-SD5 - quits on startup - AVCHD

    Hi Guys,
When an SDHC (4Gb) card or HDC-SD5 (via USB) is connected, and I bring up the Log and Transfer window, Final Cut Pro quits without a message. I have been struggling with the same issue with iMovie '08. Please see this thread for details:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5526463&#5526463
Configuration: FCP 6.0.1, Pro Update, QT 7.1.6. OSX 10.4.9. MacPro.
I no longer know what to do with this issue. I've tried using Disk Utility to make an image and then mount it...same result. The SD reader is not the issue as the result is the same even if I connect the camcorder via USB. I noticed that I if I don't apply the Pro Apps Update and keep FCP at 6.0, it doesn't crash but fails to recognize the Panasonic's AVCHD structure on the SD card.
What I did notice, however, was the manual mentioned that SD cards, whether it be 4Gb or 8Gb are formatted with FAT32 and everything below 4Gb is formated with FAT16. Perhaps this can be the root cause? Is there anybody suing a SDHC 4Gb card , formatted with the Panasonic AVCHD structure having success with FCP 6.0.1 (and or iMovie '08)???
I also read that QuickTime 7.2 can be the issue, reformatted and installed 7.1.6, again, same result.
Please any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Max Average, thanks for your reply but you suggestion does not work. I copied the contents of the SD card to a directory on my main volume, opened FCP, went to Log and Transfer, clicked the Add Folder button and then navigated to aforementioned directory -- and still FCP quits!
The directory structure as it appears on my panasonic formatted drive is:
    DCIM
    MISC
    PRIVATE
    |_AVCHD
    |_AVCHDTN
    |_BDMV
    |_CLIPINF
    |_00000.CPI
    |_INDEX.BDM
    |_MOVIEOBJ.BDM
    |_PLAYLIST
    |_00000.MPL
    |_STREAM
    |_00000.MTS
Is this a standard across all AVCHD manufacturers?

  • Problems importing through log and transfer

anybody know why i cant import canon elph 100HS video files through log and transfer in final cut pro 7?
    thanks

Does Canon have a plugin for working with that camera and FCP like they do for their larger DSLRs?  If so, download and install it and then try Log & Transfer again.  If not, you'll need to convet the files from the camera using other apps like MPEG Streamclip or possibly ClipWrap.

  • No I/O points in Log and Transfer

For some reason when I use Log and Transfer in Final Cut Pro 6.0 the set In- Out points won't show up. Can't use the keyboard shortcuts either. I have tried trashing the preferences and a full re-install but still nothing. Anyone have any ideas??

What footage are you logging and transferring? Not sure if this matter, but just curious.
Might try installing FCP again...on top of what you already have. This can clear up things. Make sure to update it fully to.

  • Log and Transfer won't take P2 contents...

I tried following Shane Ross' P2 workflow video exactly, but when I attempt to open the folder containing the "Contents" folder and the text file, the media doesn't show up in the Log and Transfer browser. Nothing happens at all; I click open and the browsing window disappears and the Log and Transfer window is left as it was when I first opened it.
I had initially thought that the problem was that the drive I was trying to look at was NTSF formatted. I normally wouldn't check the formatting of a drive because most of the people I work with are Mac people, but I ended up copying everything to an OS Extended drive and the workflow still won't work.
I'm new to P2 material, the director doesn't know anything about and she hasn't been able to get in touch with her friend, from whom she borrowed the camera.
Do I need to download some third party software to make this work?
By the way, I'm using FCP 6.0.3 on a MacBook Pro (2.66 GHz, 2 GB RAM) with the media on a G-RAID drive through FW800. The footage was shot on an HVX-500.

Shane, thanks for the follow up.
Yes, that did turn out to be the problem. I saw the thread on DVXUsers. Of course they attributed the discovery of the problem to you.
By the way, the tutorial you did, after I fixed the FX Factory problem, was great. I'm really enjoying this method of logging and "capturing". After trying this out, I want to smack everyone that's ever made me capture HDV.
    You're the man, Shane!

  • Mavericks and Final Cut Pro 7 - Log and Transfer crashes

Hi all. I (perhaps unintelligently) upgraded to OSX Mavericks on my Mac Pro while working on a project in Final Cut Pro 7. What is good news is that FCP 7 still works for the most part. The bad news is that Log and Transfer crashes.
I have a Panasonic P2 camera and I dump video via FireWire 800. When I first click on the Log and Transfer button, nothing happens. When I click on it again, the Log and Transfer window opens, but then FCP 7 crashes.
Is there any way to get video from my P2 card into the project without Log and Transfer?
Also, would any of these options work?
Trash preferences (working to figure out how to do that on Mavericks)
Worst case, re-format and re-install Lion (Don't have much time to do that)
Please let me know if you have a work around or a fix for this. I need to have this solved TODAY.
I appreciate your help in advance.

I am having the same issue on my iMac that was udated to Mavericks a while back and apparently I haven't tried to log and transfer anything since.
The error comes up everytime I have a my Sandisk High Speed Card in my lexar Fire Wire 800 card reader. The Log and Transfer screen pops up and it starts adding the clips and instead of populating the screen, it crashes. Mine also says FCP quit while using the canonIHL plug in, here's a screen shot of the indication.
I agree, this needs to be resolved ASAP. I'm dead in the water. The only thing I can do is transfer the raw files into a folder somewhere, then import the clips, but then to have them as ProRes files I guess I would have to use compressor before hand. I've done it before, but it never runs as smoothly without it being natively imported.

  • I'm trying to log and transfer from a pro res file (HQ) final cut s7 is telling me it is an unsupported format. What the?

i have a 58 min pro res hq file that is a .mov. it is in a folder on my hdd. i'm trying to syn rushes by logging and transferring clips from this file but i cannot bring the said file into log and transfer. final cut putsup a window that tells me the file is in an unsupported format. and to bring in a file with a supported pathway. this i do not understand. any simple explanation as to what i'm missing?

Thanks meg. I'm trying not to have to sync all the rushes in a timeline. All rushes are in the one 58 min prores file. I wanted to, I guess, log and capture the rushes as clips that I logg in the log and transfer winnow and that it would then log and sort out the material as proxy files. I'm guessing I'm just being lazy or it can't be done. Thanks for the reply but I was looking for a differentbway round than a straight import of the whole file.

  • My Log and Transfer window is not displaying properly in Final Cut Pro 7.0.3

I installed an add-in to import files from a Canon FX-100 camera.   When I tried to work with some files that had been recorded on this camera, the left panel of the Log and Transfer screen disappeared.  Nothing that I have tried - stretching or expanding the window, restarting the Final Cut, or the Mac have worked.

This forum is for FCP X only.
You need the Final Cut Studio forum for legacy FCP.
Try trashing the preferences with this free app.
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP  stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP , open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP   is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP .

  • Final Cut Pro- Log and Transfer goes idle

I just shot a project on P2 cards on the Panasonic HVX200 and now when I'm trying to download my files into Final Cut 6.0 via Log and Transfer it goes idle. I can play the clip in the viewer, but it won't download, the wheel turns for a second and an orange exclamation mark pops up. I've tried trashing the preferences and have double checked the Audio/Video set-up countless times. Does anybody have any advice?

And your scratch disk? Formatted MacOSextended?
Have you turned off "put hard disks to sleep when possible" in your energy saver preferences.

  • Final cut pro log and transfer

    Hi !
I'm trying to transfer footage from my camera sony HDD.
when i open the window log and transfer, i'm suposed to see my clip.mts, or to be able to drag them but nothing is happening.
how am I suposed to log clip from a cam with an hard disk drive?

FC Pro cant capture stuff from hard drive cameras
you will have to transfer the files to the Mac then convert them
MPEG stream clip can convert many types but that depends on the type they are

  • A conclusion to ALL the AVCHD/.mts Log and Transfer Final Cut Pro 7 issues

    Hey all! Happy 2011!
So this is my first post here and hopefully when this thread concludes with all your help we should be able to help a lot of people and save them the heartache that I have recently had to endure by stating these things in plain English. I have some questions at the end which I think could be answered very easily! Please, no gobbledygook!
It would be great if people in the know can confirm/deny or comment on my points so those that are in a similar position to me can save their time and just get on with it.
    1) I have a Panasonic HDC-TM300 and it records in AVCHD/.mts files
    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    3) Log and Transfer _*DOES NOT WORK*_ if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do! Im sure that many people have done the same thing as me please correct me if i’m wrong
After a lot of research on the internet I have come up with the following solutions and in brackets my thoughts on them. If anyone has any experience with them please please let me and other people know so I can get on with my life and editing these files.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight. (This could take a while but i think we should do it for the sake of future generations)
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why? (Least desirable option due to requirement for extra program so extra faffing and extra cost).
Thanks y’all and keep up the awesome work!!
    K*

    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    Yes.
    3) Log and Transfer DOES NOT WORK if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
This is true of ANY tapeless format.
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
This is due to the fact that most of them have files in those other folders in that structure that FCP needs to access in order to get all the proper components assembled properly. Sure, there are formats that have folders with nothing in them. Doesn't matter, FCP is designed to look at the full structure and work from that.
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do!
The most natural thing in the world is to NOT backup everything? Well, that might be the case, since this comes up so darn often. But, it is wrong. The full structure must be maintained. This is true of many tapeless formats and more than just FCP. Avid and Premiere need this for certain tapeless formats too.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight.
It isn't an oversight. It is designed like this on purpose. You need to learn how to do things right. You obviously know what that is now...keep the full card structure. So now it is up to you to continue to do things properly. Instead of insisting that an NLE conform the way it works to suit your needs.
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
Easy. Shoot a small bit on another card. Look at the folder structure. Recreate that structure in your backed up footage. Often this will mean making folders with exact names, even if they are empty. But if they have files in them, even small ones, then the first backup you did might not work....because those might be some of the small files FCP needs in order to do the L&T process properly. Always worth trying though.
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why?
I highly recommend Clipwrap. Mainly because I haven't tried the others. But also because the author is always following the latest formats, and works hard to make sure his software works with them. It solved an importing issue I had with the Sony NXCam camera...within a week of me moaning about the issue.
Want a tutorial to walk you through the tapeless workflow in FCP? I have one. Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial You might know most of this, but watch it for other tips.
