Log and transfer keeps "stalling" when trying to import clips

Hello folks- I managed to copy the contents of my P2 card to the external hard drive where I have the scratch card for Final Cut Pro (6.0.6) by copying the contents folder and the necessary .txt file to my appropriately named/set up project folder in the scratch card folder.
When I launch Final Cut Pro I actually SEE the files ready for "Add Clip to Queue", all being well in that I can even preview the clip, set ins and outs etc. When I "add clip to queue" it appears to work (in that the wee wheel goes around in "status") and then it stops. Clicking on "status" reveals a red exclamation mark which in turn reads "no data".
Here is a screen shot: http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/9652/finalcutproblem.jpg
What am I not doing right?
For anyone's information- The footage was shot on a Panasonic HVX201 with P2, using 1080i/25p on DVCPRO50. The initial problem I appeared to have is that I didn't know what to set my Final Cut Pro up for to recognise the camera which is why I transferred the data from the card which DID show up on my desktop using a tutorial I found. The previous thread (about the communication issue, detailing actions which lead to this) is here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2518674&tstart=0
I hope that someone will see what I don't know and be able to at least point me in the right direction- *what is wrong with the way I set up/imported data or whatever which is causing the Add Clip to Queue to fail?*
Thank you so much, one and all, for your kind attention.

Sigh- no responses permitted, no point having it!

Hard Drive:  The Hard Drive is on my camera (Sony Handycam)
Just needed some info on what is going on with your particular system.
Knowing the exact camera model will also assist us.
If this camera is standard AVCHD you should be able to connect with USB to Mac with FCE open and use Log and Transfer without all the fiddling around converting etc.
What FCE does during ingest is convert files to AIC. (Apple Intermediate Codec)
FCE cannot read the individual files in the BDMV folder, that's why all the converting is required when you use that method.
BTW: regards formatting drives/cards/memory on cameras; it is wise to use the actual device to format rather than a computer. This is a prime cause of read/write goof ups with solid state media. This applies to still or video cameras.
Keeping the COMPLETE card/memory structure in tact is vital for successful transfers.

  • Log and Transfer with error when adding to queue

I transfer video to Log and Capture from Canon Vixia HF S11 AVCHD fine in FCP 7.03. When I try to log the selected clips (Add Selection to Queue) they do appear in the window of logged clips but each with red circle with exclamation point, Unknown error. The effect is that the clips do not get logged to the Browser.
I trashed FCP preferences without effect. This problem appeared now. Before, Log and transfer worked fine. I see only one similar issue in the forum with recommendation to be sure to have scratch disk set, which I do.

connect the camera and go to applications:  utilities:  disk utility and see if the camera shows up.  I think it usually shows up as a drive called "untitled" although it may have some other name.  If it doesn't, it may be a problem with the camera or the cable.  You might try restarting the computer with the camera attached.  I've found that some cameras are a little tricky to connect and it's usually the way the controls on the camera are manipulated.  Once you get the camera to mount on your computer, copy the entire contents of the "drive" to your computer and then log and transfer, pointing to the containing folder.

  • Log and transfer keeps going on idle... and won't load my clips

Final Cut Express has my video footage on there. But when I try to log and transfer it, it will have the spinny arrow thing that makes it look like it's loading clips but then it will stop and go on idle.
I have no idea what to do. I just put Final Cut Express on my computer the other day and this is the first time I am using it on this computer.
I already trashed my preferences, thinking that was the problem but I am totally at a loss. Please help. Thank you!!

There is lots of existing info on this forum about capturing AVCHD from Canon cams. Try a search.
Usually the trouble is in the Log and Transfer window settings.
Switch to Plain Stereo rather than the default Matrix setting.

  • Log and transfer causes FCP to crash with long clips

Hi. I am trying to import a few 2 hour+ clips using Log and Transfer from my Sony NX5. Once the destination clip has reached approx 60GB, FCP crashes every time. There is plenty of disk space left.
I have tried trashing preferences and also changing scratch disks. I am turned off time machine. I am really worried that I wont be able to get this footage onto my machine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

In the end Clipwrap saved the day on this project.
This did happen to me again though on yet another project, where the files were around an hour long this time. In the end I got it to work, not sure the solution but tried the following:
    - Selected a different easy setup (choose PAL) - this fixed the problem for a colleague of mine, even though it doesn't seem logical
    - Used my internal drive as a scratch disk instead of my firewire drive (normally this is not a problem)
I haven't tried this with the really long clips, as Clipwrap saved me.
    Many thanks for suggestions.

  • Final Cut Log and Transfer Red Exclamation Mark Error on Longer Clips

Hi Guys, I am getting the dreaded red exclamation error while importing from my Canon HF S100 into FCP 6.0.1 via Log and Transfer. I've had no problems with clips under 5 minutes they transfer over fine but clips longer than that will not transfer. Anyone else had this problem, any possible solutions?
    Thanks

My scratch disk is an external WD drive. I never did format it.
Is there a way for me to break the clip into 3 or 4 parts and then import it to FCP directly without log and transfer?
    Thanks.

  • Mac keeps freezing when trying to import video

When I try to import video to my i5 iMac 21.5" it gets to about 5 seconds and then freezes the copying file tab has been on the screen constant now for 2 days, it plays all the video directly from disk but I am trying to put them on an external HDD which is formatted as per the reccomendations.  This is happening virtually everytime I try and copy any files including to the local drive.  Also whilst Im on the subject I installed a printer and for some reason it keeps dropping the printer so I have to install it every time I want to use the printer.  Both the HDD and printer are compatible with apple mac and all the files as I said earlier run from CD/DVD.  Im running OSX Lion and apart from the files I am trying to import and the printer software its a vanilla build.

Try trashing iMovie preferences. They are in your home library>preferences.

  • Problem with imovie crashing when trying to import clips

I just purchased an imac, connected my video camera (panasonic hd camera) and opened imovie, it shows my two movie clips in the preview window within imovie and then crashes (says relaunch, quit or ignore). Any suggestions?
Should I just install the drivers that came with my video camera? I thought Imovie would just detect my camera (which it does) and then work properly without crashing the program). thanks for the help!

This worked for me with a Panasonic HDC-SD9:
Check Software Update under the Apple logo in the menu bar. If you see Quicktime 7.5 update, install it. After installation, go into Software Update again. If you see iMovie 7.1.2 update and iDVD 7.0.2 update, install them. Try downloading clips again. If it still does not work you will have to reformat the card which will destroy any clips. Good luck!

  • Premiere Elements 7 keeps crashing when trying to import video from webcam, can i fix it? :s

I'm running it on my Sony Vaio laptop I got as a desktop replacement, specs aren't a problem, it runs perfectly with anything I  do except for when I try to import video footage from my webcam under Get Media From.. Webcam or WDM Device. Every time I try, it just crashes. The webcam is built into the laptop and works just fine on any other program.
Any help would be very much appreciated

    Welcome to the forum.
What is the format of those Webcam files?
Also, along with the format, it would be useful to know the CODEC used by the capture software. The great, free utility, G-Spot, should be able to give you that info. Here's look at the G-Spot screen, w/ an AV file loaded:

  • Unknown Error when I Logging and Transfer P2 Card files in FCP 6.0.6

I have been trying for the past two week to Log and Transfer P2 files to my external hardrive using FCP 6.0.6 unsuccessfully.
Originally I tried to Log and Transfer directly from the Panasonic HPX-170 in between my shooting. The first time it was a success but from then on I always get the same Unknown Error when attempting to transfer. When I encountered the Unknown Error during the second transfer I went on to create folders with the P2 contents on my external Hard Drive.
When I drag any of the P2 folder content on the Log and Transfer window I can see all the clips. I can successfully transfer small B-roll clips I have but any big size file (all my interviews) return an Unknown Error symbol at the end of the transfer. I believe this is probably why I didn't encounter any issues during my first time.
I tried deleting the preferences in FCP and then Logging and Transfer and it works if the systems settings are set for the Mac Pro but not for the external HD. The problem is I don't have enough space on my Mac. I have cleared 45GB of space but my P2 files total 54GB. I tried the same process with a Mac Power Book with FCP 5.1.4 and again in encounter the same problem.
The external HD is a 1TB Western Digital that I have used before with FCP for editing but never before with P2 files. Its in good working order and has 79GB free space remaining. Both the camera and the P2 cards (16GB and 4GB) are also performing as expected.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

  • Whole clips not tranfering from log and transfer into FCP studio 2

720p 24p clips from P2 get cut short when transfered from log and transfer. I can play the whole clips in the log and transfer window to verify they are there but once they are brought into my project they play about half way through, then the sound drops out and the clip stops short of where it really ended. the clips in the canvas window or on the timeline when played all the way to the end are not the complete original clip? i have tried switching every setting i can think of but to no avail. any ideas out there? thanks a million

no, no in or out points set in log and capture. what's wierd is that clips shot at 24 fps are the ones running short and clips shot at 60 fps come in fine (the slow motion isn't happening but i think i can change that with cinema tools?) anyway, thanks for the suggestion

  • Log and Transfer from Canon HFs100

I have connected my Canon HFS100 via usb cable to my mac and am able to use log and transfer to import/convert most of the clips. The problem I have is that it will not convert about 10% of the clips for some reason.
I am able to view and play the clips that are not able to be converted in the player in the log and transfer window, but when I add them to the queued section to convert them it tries to convert them and then fails. I get the Red Stop sign with exclamation point.
All video was shot one after another and nothing different was done.

    Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
Note: For FCP 7 the file will be called "Final Cut Pro 7.0 Prefs", obviously.
When you have a stable set of preference files, download [Preference Manager|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to back them up. I

  • Log and transfer MTS file and audio slip issues

I'm having 3 issues with a  30 minute project in FCE HD.
    1. When I create clips in log and transfer, sometimes my footage chatters when I watch in in the viewer or place it on the timeline.  It didn't chatter in camera, I checked, and it doesn't chatter in log and transfer. I can re-cut the clip in log and transfer but I'm trying to save time!
    2. When creating a clip in log and transfer or just transferring a full clip, FCE trims the last 3 to 4 seconds off.  I need these 3 to 4 seconds!
    3.  When trimming and razoring a 9 minute+ clip on the timeline, the audio begins to slip and continues to slip the longer I trim.
If anyone has answers to my three issues, please help.  This project is frustrating in content and now it's frustrating in editing!
Thank you in advance for all your help!!

Sorry it has taken so long for me to get back to you.  Again, thank you for taking the time to help me.
Your first question, these clips came from my Panasonic HMC 150 camera.  I filmed at 24 fps. I downloaded the files from my SD card to my laptop, then use log and transfer to bring the clips into the project.
FCE only offers 25 fps or 29.97 fps. So, there is a discrepancy there.  I'm not sure how to fix that when I want to stay with 24 fps.  Yes, I can film at other frame rates, I just prefer 24 for what I generally create.  Is there a plugin for more frame rate choices in FCE?  Or is that just available in FCP?
Your second question, I always use insert.  I only use overwrite for my title cards.
And finally, your third, I am aware of the destination tabs.  I understand how they work.  My issue with having so many tracks is that I am working on a laptop without a mouse and sometimes when I move a clip the timeline jumps and creates the extra tracks when I place the clip.  I just need to be more careful when moving clips.
Now, as to my final issue and that is the trimming of the clips through log and transfer.  FCE trims off the first and  last couple of seconds and will not allow me to bring them into the project.  Is this a setting problem or just inherent of FCE?
I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Log and transfer with Canon cameras

Hello. Using Final Cut Pro 7 to edit my project.
I've been importing footage successfully from my Canon 7D using the Log and Transfer plugin.
I tried to do the same with new footage from my Canon Powershot S100.  I receievd this error:
"contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."
I transferred the files from camera --> external hard drive keeping the original file structure.  is there another way I should be importing footage from a non-EOS camera?
    Thanks!

I'm not aware of any plugin that Canon has for the S100 but you may want to check on that. If they don't, it would be best to convert the footage to ProRes 422 prior to importing into an FCP project.
