Log and Transfer slower in FCP 7?

Hi,
Here at my job, we often work with the RED camera. As a workflow, we use Log and Transfer to convert all red files into Apple Pro Res. We used to work with FCP 6.0.6 and when we did, 1 hour of footage took 2h (3h max!!) to convert. This week though, we upgraded to Final Cut Studio 3 (thus upgrading to FCP 7.0.1) and the conversion time increased dramatically!
It's not rare for Directors to use the full 4k resolution with that camera. But for that project, he only used the 2k and 3k resolutions. So I started to Log and Transfer and came back 3 hours after that and not even 1/3 of the batch was converted! What I didn't know with the new version, is that it automatically converts in Apple Pro Res 4444, instead of Apple Pro Res 4:2:2 (HQ), as it did before. So I did some tests. I took 10 minutes of footage and tried to convert them in:
Test #1 - Apple Pro Res 4444 *highest quality possible*
Test #2 - Apple Pro Res (proxy) *lowest quality possible, for offline*
Test #3 - Apple Pro Res (HQ) *2nd to best quality possible*
And to my surprise, those 3 tests gave me the same results. For 10 minutes of footage, the conversion took 1h08 (Actually, 1h08 for test #1, 1h06 for test #2 and 1h07 for test #3). That means that for 1 hour of footage, you'd need at least 6 hours of conversion time! This is crazy. And it's not because we have bad computers... we have Mac Pros, dual quad-cores with 8gb of ram in them. I mean, it takes less time to convert the red files into .mxf files for Avid (approx. 4h for 1 hour of footage)!
So my question is: Why the heck would it take longer to convert Red files with the Log and Transfer tool in the latest version of Final Cut Pro?
Thank you,
André

  • Log and transfer inevitably crashing FCP

We're editing a couple of music video in FCP 6.0.1.
we shot with an HMC150 so the clips are being uploaded from an SDHC in an AVCHD folder via log and transfer. the first video went relatively fine barring several problems with log and transfer (files not matching thumbnails, files corrupting, FCP crashing) the problems seem to be random and inconsistent, as issues like a misplaced thumbnail or corrupted import could be reopened and fixed so there was no way to tell exactly why each thing was happening. eventually it all subsided and work went smoothly.
went on to finish video number two and after several imports the log and transfer feature has decided to be the death of the project. Choosing log and transfer inevitably leads to an almost instant crash of FCP unless all drives it's reading from are disconnected. reinserting any drive means an instant crash. the drives are not corrupt and function just fine with any and all other programs, even imovie.
why in the world can't i get FCP to stay alive when i open the log and transfer? please help.

Right - I've solved this one. It turned out that I'd recorded some 1080p50 footage. The mere presence of this on the card freaked Log & Transfer. The camera doesn't make it easy by hiding that footage when you're looking at 1080i25 (or whatever "normal" mode is).

  • LOG AND TRANSFER not working after upgrade ...?

    Hi ..
    I am running FCP 6.0.5
I am using Mac OSX 10.5.6
I've been using the 'log and transfer' window of FCP for the past few months without any trouble ... until today.
Every time i transfer the clips everything appears to go smoothly, but then when the 'transferred' clip is played back there is an odd 'jumping' or 'glitching' ... IE: the resulting footage is definitely NOT usable.
The only thing that i can think of that's changed is the fact that I upgraded the software last thursday and i probably hadn't transferred any footage since then. Is there an FCP conflict with the latest quicktime or Itunes upgrades?
I have tried re-transferring some clips from last week before the upgrade and the transfers now have the glitches.
I need this working as soon as possible! I have deadlines! Anyone who can help it would be greatly appreciated.

To cut unwanted parts off MTS files losslessly, try final mate for mac. That is the tool to help cut or trim MTS and still export MTS without any quality loss. Look through this blog to know how to make it done.

  • Log and transfer does not recognize footage. Please Help

When i open the log and transfer window in FCP on my macbook it no longer recognizes the files from the Contents folder of a P2 card or the RED ONE files from the folder on my hard drive. last week however, everything was working fine.
does this have something to do with the project settings or the RED plugins? any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

Have you changed your set up or software, or computer in any manner since last week?
And did you trash your preferences and try that?

  • Log and transfer with Panasonic HDC-HS100

I recently purchased the Panasonic HDC-HS 100, that is a hybrid SD card/HDD. I am having problems importing my footage onto my computer. When opening the log and transfer window in FCP, it does not recognize the camera (error messages indicate there is an invalid directory structure). Also, the media has been saved to my computers hard drive. How do I get this footage on my computer so I can start editing! Thanks for the help.

Hi David - I'm actually having the exact same problem:
Have the HDC-HS100, trying to import the internal files into Final Cut Express 4 using the "Log & Transfer" program. I've tried several times to "Add Clip to Queue" but it continuously says "1 clip queued - idle."
And help would be much appreciated. Just got back from a 2-month trip to Central America with some great footage that I can't even touch!

  • Log and Transfer with Panasonic HD

Recently I purchased the Panasonic HDC-HS 100, which is a hybrid SD card/HDD, (AVCHD). I use the Mac OS X (10.4.11) with Final Cut Pro 6.0.5. I am having problems importing my footage onto my computer. When opening the log and transfer window in FCP, it does not recognize the camera (error messages indicate there is an invalid directory structure). Do you have an external card reader? Or are you playing back from the camera? When you copied the contents of the card to the computer, did you copy the whole card, or just the video clips? You have to copy the ENTIRE card, as is. Create a folder on your external hard drive and name it P2(name of project)#. So if you have 3 cards you used for the project "My Haircut" you would have 3 folders named
    P2myHaircut-1
    P2myHaircut-2
    P2myHaircut-3
That is just a sample naming scheme. You can use what you want, just be consistent so you can find your footage easily. Then, mount your SD card on the desktop, open it, select all, and drag to the appropriate folder. Make sure you select all. Then, open Log and Transfer, go to the upper right corner of the Log and Transfer browser and click on the drop down button. You will see a choice that says Create Custom Path. Click that, then locate the Folder you just created. Click once on that folder and then "choose". DON'T choose the internal folders, just choose your P2myHaircut# folder. You should see your clips pop up in that browser. If this doesn't work, you may be missing a component for that camera. Honestly, I don't know anything about your camera, but that is the process for Log and Transfer.

  • Can't access the Logging Items section of the Log and Transfer window.

Yesterday I was able to select and ingest clips and rename clips from my Canon Vixia SFH11 camcorder using the logging items section of the log and transfer window in FCP 7. Today, that section of the L&T window is gone! and every time I try and change a clip name or rename a clip it either ignores the change or it tries to save the new clip with a higher numbered name (ie. Clip #102, Clip # 103).
I know if must be a setting that I am missing or a procedure I skipped.
I want my logging items section back!
I've restarted and tried rebooting to no avail. Anybody have a clue?

    Hi -
If you are missing both panes of the Log and Transfer window, you may have swiped the dividing bar over to the side to display one pane only.
Place your cursor over the bar on the side (you'll see the cursor switch to a reposition indicator)

  • Log and transfer debauchery!

At first, log and transfer just crashed FCP on my MacBook Pro (just purchased this week). Then I was able to at least keep FCP up but log and transfer would not "see" any AVCHD footage I had on the computer. Then, log and transfer could see the footage but when I tried to add it to the queue, the clip render never started, became idle...then a red exclamation point appear where the status arrows circle around.
I have uninstalled FCP several times using FCP Remover and then reinstalled. Either I am not installing correctly or my software is bunk! I installed my original FCP (4) and then the upgrade to Studio 2 each time. Am I missing something obvious?!?
    Thanks in advance!

I installed my original FCP (4) and then the upgrade to Studio 2 each time. Am I missing something obvious?!?
You don't need to do that. Just install the upgrade and enter the serial # that came with it. It will then prompt you to enter the serial from the full retail copy of FCP 4.
Then, log and transfer could see the footage but when I tried to add it to the queue, the clip render never started,
Is the directory structure of the AVCHD card completely intact or do you just have the folder with the clips in it? You need that full directory structure. In other words, the entire contents of the card.

  • FCP 7 crashes in log and transfer (NSMallocException)

FCP 7 crashes about 50 minutes or so into log and trasfering my AVCHD footage. It throws a "NSMallocException" error as follows:
    Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSMallocException', reason: '*** -[NSConcreteMutableData appendBytes:length:]: unable to allocate memory for length (73874)'
*** Call stack at first throw:
Is there any way around this painful problem
Or are there alternative ways of transfering AVCHD clips into pro res without using FCP log and transfer?

The capture scratch is to an external Raid with about 2TB free.
Clip2Wrap2 looks great, I'll give it a try. My main concern is that it might be slower than FCP. I've got two weeks of filming to do, with 6 programs a day. I'm trying to the footage copied to the computer, then have it transfering into final cut while the next section is being filmed. So it needs to transfer fairly quickly. I've tried a few other AVCHD converters, but they're painfully slow.

  • Log and Transfer Very slow

I am just curious if it always takes a VERY long time to log and transfer clips? I moved the files off of my SDHC cards and onto my hard drive. It's about 55GB of 1920x1080/60i footage. From a Sony HXR-NX5U/NX5N. And on average it will take a 5 minute clip about a half-hour to 45 minutes to transfer into FCP. Is this a normal thing?

Not normally, no. But the NXCam cameras employ yet ANOTHER flavor...non-standard flavor...of AVCHD. This makes importing slow and difficult. I had good luck with clips 5 min or less, but longer...and it would take from 2-5 hours!
The solution is to use a third party application...ClipWrap2. www.clipwrap.com
The good thing about that solution is that ClipWrap will import the timecode from the camera...because it does have timecode that it records. But FCP...AVID...they can't find it (Sony likes to hide things apparently). But ClipWrap found it.

  • Unknown Error when I Logging and Transfer P2 Card files in FCP 6.0.6

I have been trying for the past two week to Log and Transfer P2 files to my external hardrive using FCP 6.0.6 unsuccessfully.
Originally I tried to Log and Transfer directly from the Panasonic HPX-170 in between my shooting. The first time it was a success but from then on I always get the same Unknown Error when attempting to transfer. When I encountered the Unknown Error during the second transfer I went on to create folders with the P2 contents on my external Hard Drive.
When I drag any of the P2 folder content on the Log and Transfer window I can see all the clips. I can successfully transfer small B-roll clips I have but any big size file (all my interviews) return an Unknown Error symbol at the end of the transfer. I believe this is probably why I didn't encounter any issues during my first time.
I tried deleting the preferences in FCP and then Logging and Transfer and it works if the systems settings are set for the Mac Pro but not for the external HD. The problem is I don't have enough space on my Mac. I have cleared 45GB of space but my P2 files total 54GB. I tried the same process with a Mac Power Book with FCP 5.1.4 and again in encounter the same problem.
The external HD is a 1TB Western Digital that I have used before with FCP for editing but never before with P2 files. Its in good working order and has 79GB free space remaining. Both the camera and the P2 cards (16GB and 4GB) are also performing as expected.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

  • Device not working with Log and Transfer in FCP

I am trying to get some footage off my camera into final cut pro, but Final Cut Pro does not recognise my device when I try to use Log & Transfer
The camera is question is a Cannon Legria FS20, here is a link
    http://www.canon.co.uk/ForHome/Product_Finder/Camcorders/flash_memory/LEGRIAFS20/
I have looked around but can't seem to find any plug-ins to get it to work with Final Cut Pro, does anyone know any way I can get it to work with Log and Transfer
Upon inspecting the hard drive, it saves video files in .MOD format with an .MOI file (which i assume is a metadata file
How can I get it so that my device works with log and transfer?
    Thanks

    Hi -
I did a little Google searching for information on your camera and it appears that it is a Standard Definition Camera that records in the MPEG-2 format.
Log and Transfer only works with High Definition material.
You will need to convert your video clips into a format that will work with FCP.
I know nothing about working in PAL, but you want to download an free application called MPEG Streamclip from
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
This application will convert your MPEG-2 files into a format that you can use directly in FCP.
Once you have converted the files to Apple DV-PAL, with the correct frame rate (25fps?) and field dominance you can either simply drag the converted files into FCP or import them using File > Import.
    Hope this helps.

  • FCP Crash when opening log and transfer with some AVCHD footage on a card

    Hi,
I'm using a freshly (re)installed version of FCP 7 on a brand new macbookpro loaded with 8gb ram and equipped with a small 2ghz Intel Core i7
I get footage shot on Panasonic ag-hmr10 minicams coming on SD cards as AVCHD footage. Sometimes the files are quite big, 17gb of compressed footage.
When I go to log and transfer, to convert the footage in apple prores, the l/t window opens, I see a preview of my footage, than the spinning beach ball of death shows up and FCP crashes every time. I've tried deleting the preferences and reinstalling the software. Still, it keeps crashing. Now the same file on a different computer equipped with FCP will be processed, slowly but surely.
Now I know I can work around this problem by going to toast as an encoder, but I want to fix this issue so I can operate from FCP. I've seen this problem posted before but never found any good solution.
    Any suggestions?

Have you tried setting the L&T AVCHD audio conversion prefs to plain stereo?
    Open the L&T window.
Click on the gear icon towards the upper center of the frame.
Select "Plain Stereo" For the AVCHD plugin.

    the error message reads:
The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly after it was relaunched. The problem may have been caused by the SonyXDCAM plug-in.
I have tried to get rid of it and obviously failed because i keep getting that message which tells me it's still there.

Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • Log and Transfer Crashing FCP

Not sure what is going on. Been using Log and Transfer for 8 months to capture video from P2 Cards in Panasonic HVX200 recorded in 720p60. Haven't had a problem before. Today, went to capture new footage (only about 15 minutes worth) and the first time I briefly saw the dialog window before FCP crashed, but since then, after restarting, closing the open files, creating a new project, making sure software was up to date, etc, it keeps crashing before even showing the window. I just get the 'spinning beachball of death' for about 5 seconds before the crash.
I also tried just transferring the files to the local drive first than running the log and transfer, but that didn't work either.
I don't have FCP tricked out with any plug-ins, with the exception of Flip for Mac, but that has been running fine for all 8 months.
    Any ideas?
