Log and Transfer - XDCam to Pro-Res

Does anyone know a way to transfer XDCam footage directly to Apple Pro-Res using Log and Transfer?
Thanks,
M

Thanks meg. I'm trying not to have to sync all the rushes in a timeline. All rushes are in the one 58 min prores file. I wanted to, I guess, log and capture the rushes as clips that I logg in the log and transfer winnow and that it would then log and sort out the material as proxy files. I'm guessing I'm just being lazy or it can't be done. Thanks for the reply but I was looking for a differentbway round than a straight import of the whole file.

  • Log and Transfer:XDCAM

Is it possible to set up the Log and Transfer to convert the footage to XDCAM instead of ProRes?
    Thanks in advance.

You will not be able to transcode directly to ProRez, you will just use Log & Transfer to rewrap these XD Cam files into quicktime .mov files. If you are looking for a solution to export from the timeline back to XD Cam then open the File/Export/Sony XD Cam method.

  • A conclusion to ALL the AVCHD/.mts Log and Transfer Final Cut Pro 7 issues

    Hey all! Happy 2011!
So this is my first post here and hopefully when this thread concludes with all your help we should be able to help a lot of people and save them the heartache that I have recently had to endure by stating these things in plain English. I have some questions at the end which I think could be answered very easily! Please, no gobbledygook!
It would be great if people in the know can confirm/deny or comment on my points so those that are in a similar position to me can save their time and just get on with it.
    1) I have a Panasonic HDC-TM300 and it records in AVCHD/.mts files
    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    3) Log and Transfer _*DOES NOT WORK*_ if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do! Im sure that many people have done the same thing as me please correct me if i’m wrong
After a lot of research on the internet I have come up with the following solutions and in brackets my thoughts on them. If anyone has any experience with them please please let me and other people know so I can get on with my life and editing these files.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight. (This could take a while but i think we should do it for the sake of future generations)
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why? (Least desirable option due to requirement for extra program so extra faffing and extra cost).
Thanks y’all and keep up the awesome work!!

    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    Yes.
    3) Log and Transfer DOES NOT WORK if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
This is true of ANY tapeless format.
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
This is due to the fact that most of them have files in those other folders in that structure that FCP needs to access in order to get all the proper components assembled properly. Sure, there are formats that have folders with nothing in them. Doesn't matter, FCP is designed to look at the full structure and work from that.
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do!
The most natural thing in the world is to NOT backup everything? Well, that might be the case, since this comes up so darn often. But, it is wrong. The full structure must be maintained. This is true of many tapeless formats and more than just FCP. Avid and Premiere need this for certain tapeless formats too.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight.
It isn't an oversight. It is designed like this on purpose. You need to learn how to do things right. You obviously know what that is now...keep the full card structure. So now it is up to you to continue to do things properly. Instead of insisting that an NLE conform the way it works to suit your needs.
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
Easy. Shoot a small bit on another card. Look at the folder structure. Recreate that structure in your backed up footage. Often this will mean making folders with exact names, even if they are empty. But if they have files in them, even small ones, then the first backup you did might not work....because those might be some of the small files FCP needs in order to do the L&T process properly. Always worth trying though.
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why?
I highly recommend Clipwrap. Mainly because I haven't tried the others. But also because the author is always following the latest formats, and works hard to make sure his software works with them. It solved an importing issue I had with the Sony NXCam camera...within a week of me moaning about the issue.
Want a tutorial to walk you through the tapeless workflow in FCP? I have one. Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial You might know most of this, but watch it for other tips.

  • Log and Transfer issues

I have a 2GHz Mac Book Pro with 2 GB or ram. I use this quite a lot when shooting and editing with my Panasonic P2 (HPX2000). Usually, I log and transfer DV, DVC Pro and DVC Pro 50 files with no issues. The other day, I shot a concert in 720P and when trying to log and transfer a 40 minute video, it would not finish. It would show the file transferring, but show the exclamation point at next to it, alerting me that it had problems. I was able to transfer over small chunks and edit them together in FCP, but I wonder if this is a ram issue or something like that. Any thoughts?

#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

  • Refresher for log and transfer in FCP 7

    Hi,
I need a bit of a refresher to using log and transfer in FCP 7 what setting do I use for XDCAM ? Do I set it to AVCHD?
    Please help
    Thank you
    Jeff

Have you loaded the xdcam plug in?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2721
Otherwise, I think you have the choice of keeping it as xdcam or converting to prores when you log and transfer. xdcam are smaller file sizes, while prores is generally less taking on the system.

  • Date gone after pro res 422 log and transfer

Is it normal with AVCHD video that after it is transferred and encoded to Apple Pro res 422 that the date and time of the recording it lost? I now cannot search for video by date recorded in my CatDV8 catalog. With my mini DV tape imports, all of that came over.

    Brian --
I'm very much in the same position -- about to start ingesting many hours of AVCHD footage for which I need to retain date & time info for each clip.
It seems the height of absurdity that the browser portion of FCP's Log & Transfer window has a "Date Created" column with that exact info, and yet FCP7 (yes, version SEVEN) apparently won't let you simply transfer that column over and have it be displayed (as well as be a sorting option) in the Browser itself!
If this is some technical limitation of transcoding to ProRes, then ProRes is still Beta software in desperate need of some serious development. And I can't see blaming it on the AVCHD codec, since L&T seems to have no trouble seeing and displaying the Date Created info for each clip.
So the question remains: if Log & Transfer can see it (and since L&T does have several data fields which do show up in their respective Browser columns after import) then why the !@#$%^&* can't something as fundamental and as obviously important as the Date Created info not be transferable as well???
Especially for a documentary, that kind of basic metadata -- and the ability to have your imported clips display in chronological order -- is CRUCIAL.
(I'd send a Feature Request to FCP Feedback, but are they still accepting suggestions for version 3?)
    =================
Sarcasm aside, I have found one very kludgy and inelegant way to have that Date Created info automatically included as part of the Log & Transfer process:
In the bottom right portion of the L&T window, you have to create a new, custom "Name Preset", one that includes the ClipDate (and/or any combination of the ClipTime, ClipMonth, ClipDay buttons appropriate to the time span of your project's footage) into, and -- if needed as a sorting display option in the Browser -- at the beginning of, each clip's "Transfer As" name.
It's ugly, it's awkward, it's limited (you can't have the date display as a compact 091123, for example, or have the time be included without seconds, etc.), but it appears to be as good as we've got -- however pathetically inadequate that may be -- for what should be an obvious and automatic option.
(I mean, do the Log & Transfer development team and the Browser & Clip Import development team work different shifts, and just never get the chance to talk to each other? It's the only sane explanation I can come up with.)

(Still hoping someone can suggest a workflow which allows AVCHD clips to be ingested into FCP7 without their Date Created info being ridiculously tossed in the trash.)

  • Log and Transfer: Options besides Apple Pro Res 422 ?

Hi,  I am now using a camcorder that records files to a card. When I use Log and Transfer in FCP, the resulting files default to Apple Pro Res 422, which are absolutely huge.  Is there a way to set this up to transfer to a smaller file type, maybe of a quality similar to HDV?
    Thanks, BOb

There's a reason HDV files are small - they're highly compressed files.  Final Cut is a professional product - it's built for high quality video, which requires storage space.
In some instances can change Log and Transfer preferences to transcode to ProRes422 LT, which is a lighter weight version of ProRes422.  The files will be smaller, but they probably won't be as small as you're hoping they will be.
Open the Log and Transfer window.  On the upper region there will be a gear, pick that and pick preferences.  Find the camera type you're using and change the Target Format to ProRes422 LT if possible.  As you did not tell us what kind of camera this is it is impossible to tell which one you need to change.
All that said, storage is pretty cheap.  If you don't do a whole lot of editing a 320gb G-Drive Slim for $80 would be a great investment.  If that isn't an option and you really need small files I would suggest editing in iMovie.  I believe it converts everything to H.264, which is very small in comparison to ProRes.  Don't try editing H.264 in FCP.

  • SONY XDCAM LOG and TRANSFER CRASHING FCP

I am trying to log and transfer xd cam footage. every time i open the log and transfer window, FCP crashes. What is the cleanest way to get rid of the xdcam plugin.
    the error message reads:
The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly after it was relaunched. The problem may have been caused by the SonyXDCAM plug-in.
I have tried to get rid of it and obviously failed because i keep getting that message which tells me it's still there.
Can someone give me a step by step on how to get rid of it?

Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • Issue with XDCam log and transfer update

I'm trying to install Sony's XDCAM EX Log and Transfer Plug-in, and only can get as far as the "Destination Select" tab, where I'm informed that it "can't be installed on this disk. Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 or higher is recommended for this software."
I just installed Final Cut Pro 7 yesterday.
... what gives? Do I even need this update to be able to manage the videos from my PMW EX1r? I was unable to use them in final cut pro when I tried earlier, and was led to that "Log and Transfer Plug-in" from Sony and told it was the solution, which now won't allow me to even install it.

You have a number of options, make sure you have the latest Sony XDCAM EX Log and Transfer plug in (v1.2) also grab Sony's XDCAM Transfer (v2.12) which you can use instead of the aforementioned L&T plug in. Plus there is Sony's Clip Browser app (v2.6) for checksum validated offloading of the media from the camera/cards ... and now there is a brand new app called Sony XDCAM Browser (v1.0) which is designed to combine/consolidate the functions of the various utilities into one single handy dandy app. Unfortunately in this first release it has far inferior functionality as compared to what can be managed with the separate apps.
All of the above can be most easily downloaded (requires no registration) from Sony's Canadian website:

    Hope it helps

  • Mavericks and Final Cut Pro 7 - Log and Transfer crashes

Hi all. I (perhaps unintelligently) upgraded to OSX Mavericks on my Mac Pro while working on a project in Final Cut Pro 7. What is good news is that FCP 7 still works for the most part. The bad news is that Log and Transfer crashes.
I have a Panasonic P2 camera and I dump video via FireWire 800. When I first click on the Log and Transfer button, nothing happens. When I click on it again, the Log and Transfer window opens, but then FCP 7 crashes.
Is there any way to get video from my P2 card into the project without Log and Transfer?
Also, would any of these options work?
Trash preferences (working to figure out how to do that on Mavericks)
Worst case, re-format and re-install Lion (Don't have much time to do that)
Please let me know if you have a work around or a fix for this. I need to have this solved TODAY.
I appreciate your help in advance.

I am having the same issue on my iMac that was udated to Mavericks a while back and apparently I haven't tried to log and transfer anything since.
The error comes up everytime I have a my Sandisk High Speed Card in my lexar Fire Wire 800 card reader. The Log and Transfer screen pops up and it starts adding the clips and instead of populating the screen, it crashes. Mine also says FCP quit while using the canonIHL plug in, here's a screen shot of the indication.
I agree, this needs to be resolved ASAP. I'm dead in the water. The only thing I can do is transfer the raw files into a folder somewhere, then import the clips, but then to have them as ProRes files I guess I would have to use compressor before hand. I've done it before, but it never runs as smoothly without it being natively imported.

  • All my settings are Apple Pro Rez 422 but when i log and transfer, i'm getting dvcprohd. what's going on?

All my settings are Apple Pro Rez 422 but when i log and transfer, i'm getting dvcprohd. what's going on?

If your camera shoots DVCPRO HD to P2 cards...like the HVX200, HPX170, HPX500, HPX2000...then it will come in as DVCPRO HD.  Only AVCIntra P2 comes in as ProRes.  DVCPRO HD P2 comes in native.

  • I can't not transfer files in 'log and transfer' of Final Cut Pro. I recorded it in SD card using Nikon D7000 and JVC GY-HM100U.

I can't not transfer files in 'log and transfer' of Final Cut Pro. I recorded it in SD card using Nikon D7000 and JVC GY-HM100U.
I think I need plug-in.  Please let me know.  Thank you.

Well, the Nikon D7000 footage cannot be logged and transferred.  There is no plugin for that like there is for the Canon cameras. Nikon never developed one.  So the footage from that camera will need to be converted with Compressor or MPEG STREAMCLIP.
The JVC should work...what version of FCP are you on?

  • Final cut pro log and transfer

    Hi !
I'm trying to transfer footage from my camera sony HDD.
when i open the window log and transfer, i'm suposed to see my clip.mts, or to be able to drag them but nothing is happening.
how am I suposed to log clip from a cam with an hard disk drive?

FC Pro cant capture stuff from hard drive cameras
you will have to transfer the files to the Mac then convert them
MPEG stream clip can convert many types but that depends on the type they are
