Log in issues and getting worse

My Mac has a clean installation of Leopard; it wasn't an upgrade, and was from the official DVD. Since then I've installed iLife and Firefox, and everything else is user data (pictures etc.)
Since installing the 10.5.4 upgrade it became horribly unstable. Firefox especially crashed every few minutes, and iMovie and iWeb weren't much better. Having no idea why or what to do I continued to battle on.
Then I was using FrontRow to listen to some music when it unexpectedly crashed - completely froze. I couldn't do anything so after waiting for some time I had to hard reset using the button on the front of the tower.
Then, on reboot, after logging in it started to load the desktop then went straight back to the login screen, then froze with the spinning coloured circle. I managed to get into safe mode and changed a few things (removed the desktop picture and set stuff back to default) but that didn't help at all.
So I booted from the DVD and restored the full system from Time Machine (archives are on an external disk) for 12-hours before Frontrow crashed. Now when I boot I get a blue screen and a corrupt login box. Typing user name and password just returns me to the blue screen. It will no longer boot in safe mode (well it boots to the login screen but then when I log in it just returns me to the log in screen again) so the restore has in fact made things worse.
I only recently came across from the PC and I've no idea what I'm doing in all honesty - can someone advise anything please as this is getting very depressing! I migrated to Mac as I was told 'they just work'.
Many thnaks,
Rob

*I'm baffled as to how a full restore from a much earlier time can still have the same issues.*
There are several very good possibilities - a program or driver that's incompatible with your computer or a munged installation or configuration file top the list. Another possibility is that TimeMachine itself is the culprit - or at least the backup it has made. For that matter, unless you take the time to use your computer a while before you perform the TimeMachine restore, you can't even be certain the computer is stable. It could be a hardware issue.
I know you hate the idea but wipe the drive and reinstall the OS one more time and take the time to do some troubleshooting at each step. Disconnect everything from the computer but the mouse and keyboard - and Ethernet cable if that's how you connect. Don't perform any software updates & don't do a restore. Just surf the net for a bit. In fact, use this time to check out whether there are any new updates to the software, printer, and other peripherals you may use. (This may be the root of your problems.) If the computer is stable then go on and perform the Apple software updates. Again, take some time to make sure the computer is stable. If it is, connect your peripherals and install the drivers - make sure they are the latest you can find. Again, test the computer for a bit.
Remember, after every reinstall & restore you've been left with an unstable computer. At this point, I don't think you can trust TimeMachine - not for your applications anyway. Rather than performing an automatic restore, I recommend that you manually copy your data - and just your data. Copy the contents of your Documents & Pictures folders from the TM backup. If you must get your mail and bookmarks, don't grab the entire Library folder, look inside and get just those files. Using TM for your data shouldn't create any instability - and if it does I'm running for the hills!
Reinstall your software manually one at a time and test. This sounds onerous but there are three basic possibilities: your computer has a hardware issue, your original installation of OS and/or software had an issue, or there's some program gumming up the works. Taking it slow gives you the best possibility of determining what the problem is.

iPad 1 Safari Crashes Constantly and getting worse day by day.  Has Apple come up with a solution?  Now I am hearing its also happening on the newer models.  My company is about to buy a lot of tablets and I will not recommend Apple anything until they fix the problem.  Granted 30 or 40 iPads is not a huge impact but i promise once the outside world hears about this BS things will change.  There are plenty of other tablets out there that do not have this problem.  At the very least we should have the option of rolling back to a stable IOS...

I have already tried all the things mentioned above as well as other things such as other browsers etc.  Its is obviously a problem with the hardware.  I also borrowed a brand new 4th gen iPad and it does the same thing.  Even after upgrading it to 6.01.  An occasional crash is one thing and can easily be waved off but this is clearly systemic and the problem appears to be related to graphical images and videos.  Both iPads are the 64gb versions, the only difference other than model is the iPad 1 has ATT cellular.  The new version is clean i.e no other APPs loaded other than what came with it.  I have 7 more coming but im seriously considering sending them back in favor of an Android tablet or the MS Surface.

  • Desperately slow broadband, and getting worse!

Hi folks - the common problem here, going by the forum - desperately slow broadband.
I'm about as far from my local exchange as it's possible to get and still receive broadband. My connection is a maximum 512 kbps and has been in place for years now. My usual download speed would have been 120 kbps on a good day, and a gaming ping on 54 - 58.
This last month it's been terrible, and getting worse. Download speed dropped to 50, and this morning is 28.9. An update from the Apple website took 34 minutes for 32.9 Mb. I'm getting repeatedly booted off my gaming servers for a high ping of 300 or so; sometimes the orange light on the router flashes repeatedly before going green again.
I run two computers from the router, both on ethernet, but only one ever surfs at any time; however I used to be able to surf both - not any more. Frequent "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and "diagnose connection problems" messages appear. Some webpages - for example the eBay home page - take over a minute to fully load. It reminds me of my old dial-up days.
BT Speedtests a few months back gave me a speed of 394; three days ago it was 194, this morning it did not complete the test.  I'm getting very frustrated.
Struggling with less than 50 KB/s… a quarter of what it used to be.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I tried the master socket two days ago hence the recent disconnection; the end plug on my cable is a small squarish one not the longer rectangular one that the phone uses so it won't fit the master socket. Before that the router had been connected for weeks with no improvement. This problem has persisted for almost six weeks now with no return to the old faster speeds. It can't be software as I run an Apple Mac and a PC alternately through both ethernet connections (unused computer is switched off)
If gaming the game goes very slow, or freezes, I get booted by admin for high ping, and sometimes - not every time - if I watch the router the broadband light flashes orange before reverting to green again.
I've been connected for years at a good speed (for this area) but since July / august it's really dropped to the present annoying stage.

You can't gift it, gifting can only be done from within the store, not from within your library.
Puchases are considered final but you can try the 'report a problem' link to contact iTunes Support and see if they will refund or credit you : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • Finder issues and Get Info refusing to show the number of files on items on the main hard drive.

I am having finder issues. Mostly on the main hard drive. It takes ages to find things and I get the spinning wheel every time I open a folder.
So I moved all of my files to a external drive.  When I had finished transfering I hit get info on the files on the external drive and on the same folder on the main drive.  To ensure that it has copied over all the files.  Because it was acting up and not copying all the files.
Get Info refuses to show the number of files within the folders on the main hard drive. It hasppily tells me everything on any of the external drives.
I have reset, the imac.  I have re indexed 3 times.  I have deleted the finder plist files.  I have reset finder using terminal commands. I have moved nearly everything off the main hard drive. But nothing is working.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what could be causing my finder and get info issues.
    Any help wpuld be appreciated.
Running Mountain Lion on a late 2009 Imac

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Tons of issues with iTunes 7.5 - And Getting Worse?

Problem 1 - Upgraded to iTunes 7.5. For some reason lost my music library, so now if I synch with my iPod I wil lose all my music. I will have to reload my music to iTunes, but that is the least of my issues....
Problem 2 - When I could get connected to the iTunes store I get this error. "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store".
Problem 3 - After trying to troubleshoot problem 2 and re-installing iTunes I am now getting the error iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store.
Problem 4 - When I remove iTunes during troubleshooting it is also removing my CD-RW drivers as well and when I restart Windows after removing iTunes my drivers have to reload.
Problem 5 - During the breif moment when I could connect I bought a movie and since it things the network is not there it won't restart this.
I have now spent hours trying to troubleshoot this and am getting no where. I am so frustrated I am about ready to trash my iPod and iTunes and go buy a Zune...now that's frustrated!
What I have done so far:
    A - updated iTunes to 7.5.0.20
    B - updated Quicktime to 7.3
C - updated DirectX to 9c (already was, but I re-installed just in case)
D - update to the latest video drivers for Radeon 9600 7.11
E - update to the latest version of the ATI Catalyst Suite (and tried without, currently I have removed this)
F - Checked my display to be sure it is 32bit and at full acceleration.
    G - Ran dxDiag
H - Unistalled and re-installed everything at least once, some thing more than once.
I - Turned off my Firewall.
J - Ran iTunes Network test, which says the network is fine!!

  • My Mid 2007 24" iMac has been a bit laggy on Yosemite and getting worse every day, so I went to the Apple Support pages on Apples website looking for help and thought I'd found some. This is what I did and it made everything 100 times worse :(

So here is what I found and what I did to try to alleviate the RAM eating upgrade named Yosemite. This guy has helped quite a few people, you can read all the comments and I gave it several tries this morning.

I post this hoping to help those users who, like me, are experiencing high CPU usage and massive memory leaking with OS X core services and apps, leading to slow performance and battery drain.
I've tried everything mentioned, but found the right combination of steps to follow. I've tried this with seven different Apple computers, including mine, and has worked well so far. I applied this method yesterday to give these process a 24 hour window to fail again, so far everything good.
First step: disconnect any external or secondary monitors, if any is present. The video memory allocation leak can also happen if you have a system with an integrated card, like Intel, with no external monitors attached.
Second step: Shut down your machine and enter Safe Mode (press shift once you turn on your computer again, more info below). Once you're there, fix your disk permissions.
Guide of how to access Safe Mode: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Third step: From Safe Mode turn off your machine again and reset your System Management Controller (SMC). There are different methods, depending on machine, to do this. To know what method applies to yours read the following guide.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Fourth step: Once your machine completes a full boot after resetting the SMC turn it off again and reset your PRAM (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP, BUT THE PREVIOUS ONES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ONE TO WORK). The PRAM stores small bits of data that indicate our Apple computer how to interact with the devices connected to it, including monitors and video cards. It also affects software.
To reset it you should hold the OPTION, COMMAND, P and R keys in your keyboard immediately after turning on your machine again. You'll hear the start up chime, continue pressing the keys until the machine boots and the chime starts A SECOND TIME, then release. IF YOUR YOSEMITE INSTALLATION LOCKS UP AT A BLACK SCREEN AFTER THIS, DONT PANIC! It's normal, just turn off your computer and let it boot again.
More info about PRAM: OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
Voila, reconnect your external displays and enjoy your system.

I hope to hear from anyone even to knock me in the head, lol. Thanks in advance and I'll be around trying to figure this out.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Firefox automatically crashes after 4 hours of use and only when a textbox is being used - problem now daily and getting worse

This has been going on for a few weeks and started of it's own accord. I have not recently installed any new plugins or scripts, and my PC is protected by two antivirus products and so my system (WinXP) is malware free.
I can browse firefox for up to 4 hours, and then it crashes. No matter what sites I am using, what I am doing or even if I'm at the PC... so long as there's a text box on the page then firefox will crash if the 4 hour time limit expires. I can be just about to save an hours worth of photo captions and lose all that work due to the crash, or can be in the middle of a background download but it'll still crash... daily.
I thought this was a plugin issue, as I have disabled all plugins for javascript handling, flashgot, etc, but still it crashes. (previously on startup Firefox would hang for 5 to 10 minutes and the system would "bing" at me if I tried to click on the firefox window... eventually a 'non responsive script' window would appear relating to a flashgot script). The crash used to go whereby suddenly the page would freeze for a few seconds, followed by a minute or two of safe working, then 2 minutes of freeze and 30 seconds of safe working, with the ratio of freeze-tim:working time working in 20 seconds increments until firefox crashed... now though there is no warning, the page freezes and then it's gone. I have updated firefox several times and still the problem persists. On a previous computer, Firefox degraded to the point where it froze for 4 minutes on any page with a Flash application... now on this computer it has degraded by itself to the point where it crashes after 4 hours of use.
I'm presently using Internet Explorer to type this question because firefox crashed again and I'm not going to sit waiting for it to reload just to get a few numbers from an information screen... therefore further info like crash ID's etc will be update in due time....

Cool, I'll try using the wall adaptor just as soon as I get a convertor for it to convert it to our socket type. It's nice to hear that someone else has experienced the same issue.
I am not using it as a phone in Australia, just the ipod and wifi.

  • Im painfully getting shocked constantly by my macbook pro and getting worse

I am constantly getting randomly what feels like im being electrocuted by my macbook pro. Started just as my finger tips going numb but now waves of tingly painful pinpricks and jolts that go up my arms and legs. I can sometimes feel it in my jaw chest and ears and it is pretty painful. I dont know what to do or how to make it stop i live in a hot climate but use a humidifier b/c of allergies. I always use the 3 pronged cord and it can happen at any places i use my computer wether plugged in or not. I love my mac but this is starting to get ridiculously painful now. Anyone else w/ this problem or have an idea of how to fix?

    Hi l,
If it's under warranty, contact Apple.
If not, an easy workaround is to get an external Bluetooth keyboard so you don't have to touch your Mac. There is obviously a hardware issue inside of it.

  • Bad and getting worse

So I've  been thinking, and wondering if anyone else has thought the same thing. It seems like since Microsoft bought Skype it has been getting better and better for windows and increasingly bulky, hard to use, and generally more full of issues for mac. I wonder how long it will be before mac users (or any non windows users) are completely screwed over and stuck with something that will hardly work and Microsoft won't even care... oh wait I think that's already the case. Lately the calls have been dropping like crazy on both ends of several of my contacts, when we are just typing back and forth we are constantly getting stuck on pending, and as of last night one of my contacts couldn't even get his video or screensharing to load. It would be one thing if there weren't people paying for subscriptions, but they are and those people who are on something other than windows are getting screwed over and it's just wrong.

Hi nostalgicmelody I'm a Mac-user and a Skype user. I have absolutely no financial involvement with Skype. I simply participate in this community as a private person. When you ask if it's a solution to roll-back to a version of Skype that will be stable with your OS, I think it's a great idea. After all, the main point is to have a trouble-free set-up. But please don't get me wrong. I'm not telling you to roll-back your Skype. My only business here is to suggest ways to make 'things' work, user-to-user. The latest Skype is a beta-version. In this business, beta means not completely finished, but ready for user-testing and feed-back. Personally, if I have more than one crash on a given software, I wouldn't hesitate to go back to a stable version. I prefer a solid Mac-environment instead of the latest thing. As an examble, I'm running Snow Leopard (but for other reasons). It doesn't keep me awake that the rest of the world is running Mountain Lion. For your situation, the rules for a free world applies here: It's your own choice  Good luck!    How to pay for this free (user-to-user) service ?If this answer was helpful, please mark it with Kudos.   If the issue is resolved, please mark it with solution.  This will help other users find this answer more easily.

  • I have no sound in Firefox, but sound does work everywhere else. The mixer on Win7 is not showing a firefox volume option. Where do I go to fix the issue and get sound on the browser, can't find any menu's for this fix.

New system, just setting up. Trouble shot hardware and everything works fine, just can't get any sound on the browser and have no obvious volume control for Firefox. All other volumes are at full

Hey! well funny enough, After doing a Semi format (That cool function that WIN 8 has to refresh your PC) .. I could hear sounds,!!!! Yay super happy!! .... so I continued to download all my programs once again....and then today, I went to watch a movie trailler.... and I had no sound... again... but obviolusy once the Razer synapse installed, It must have something wrong with it and its not letting me hear stuff!! and I know this becasue I borrowed a headset, a Turtel Beach x12 and now I can hear stuff all the time!! YAY! .. Ive been switching between one and the other, and the Kraken dont work! Lol
Thanks everyone for reading and helping! :D

  • After installing OS X Mavericks, my cursor has been not working, by not even having a triangle cursor, just a set of lines, that expand across the whole screen when it goes over a random thing! Working on and off and getting worse, what should I do ?

    please help, need suggestions

    Hi sean981024,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your cursor isn't working as expected, there are a few steps that can help isolate or resolve the issue.
First, try booting your computer into safe mode:
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
If the cursor is working normally in safe mode, this usually means OS X is fine, and the issue is caused by conflicting software in your user account.
Next, see if Finder behaves normally in a new user account. The steps in this article also apply to creating a new user in Mavericks:
OS X Mountain Lion: Create a new user account
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11468
If the issue persists in safe mode and a new user, I would recommend reinstalling Mavericks:
OS X Mavericks: Reinstall OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13871
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

  • Some thumbs not showing - and getting worse!

Hi. I have just imported a roll of photo's off my camera and I got a message saying my hard drive is near full. I got rid of a few files and created a bit of space. Now a whole lot of the thumbs won't show. Initially it was only off the new roll but now more and more in my library are disapearing! It just shows a dashed box. If I click on the box then the photo shows up but it makes it impossible to know what photo you are about to view. Any help would be great.
My iphoto library is a mess. I seem to have the same photo's stored in 2 or 3 different places. iphoto seems to only look at the file; under the library called modified and original. To tidy things up I imported the photos from the other folders so iphoto could see them and then added the photos to the trash. I then added the file with the duplicate photos in it to the trash also. I haven't cleaned my trash yet in case I've done something wrong again. Result of this is I have all my photo's now under one file the iphoto looks at and not doubled up. Have I done the right thing?

    nakiwoody:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If multiple rolls are involved then you may be better off creating a new library and importing the entire Originals folder from the old one as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
In the future Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Ipod skipping to next song and getting worse, have done 5 r's 3x  HELP!

I have a click wheel ipod that has worked fine for years. However, since I have transferred everything from Windows to my imac, it seems like my ipod has a virus...it skips from one song to another and then it seems to be more and more songs and albums as time goes by. Progressive, you know? Like a virus? I have followed all the directions I could find on this site and done the 5 R's three times now.
So, I'm at a loss, please help!

Did you ever get any relief?
Okay my situation, my buddy has a PC ipod, I have a Mac and Mac Ipod. He bought the wrong adapter for his adapter and we charged his ipod on my computer. I didn't sync his up, just charged it.
Well poor guy goes out for a run and his ipod is shuffling through every song before it even plays a note.
Any ideas? Did we kill his ipod?
