Log in to a Public Network with Safari

I have tried to log in to a Hotel airport network with Safari and get the 'Site doesn't exist" page and it will not go further. I have a strong signal and the correct IP numbers. On a whim I switched to Firefox and Bingo there was the login page. I presently have both browsers open and they both work now that I'm logged in. Can anyone explain this behavior to me.

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
Done - it does not address my issue
Also try this - Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Done and done; does not resolve the issue.
To clarify: I am trying to log into an existing home WiFi network. Signal comes in to a  (DSL) modem/router ["ZyXEL P-600 series" 802.11 b/g}. This is administered via a Windows PC (running a Czech localized version) directly by Ethernet cabling.
There are 2 password protected networks "on" this account.
17" MacBook Pro sees both channels, and can log into either. (and auto-connected as a remembered Network from a previous visit, to one channel)
15" Macbook Pro sees both channels, and can log into either.
BOTH of our IPad 2's see both channels. Both of the iPad 2's present a password entry window when selecting either channel. I enter the exact same password that I entered into the laptop(s), for the appropriate channel.
"Unable to connect to [channel name]" is the consistent response.
Again, the iPads see the network options, and I have typed in the correct passwords using the US English and the Czech QWERTY keyboard options, and the iPads will NOT connect, whereas the laptops work perfectly with the same Network channel passwords.
I would understand an alphanumeric password being a potential snag, given the different key mappings, but the main account is a simple 5 (five) digit numeric password.

  • Unable to connect to network with Safari and Software Update

A user I support has encountered a problem with networking. He is unable to connect to the network with Safari and Software Update, but IS able to connect and surf with Foxfire and some other programs. Another unusual symptom is that he actually can connect to one web site (which is in his Bookmarks Bar) with Safari, but can't connect to anything else. He's also unable to navigate off of that one site he connects to. When he runs Network Diagnostics, he gets all green lights (no problems). He has fixed permissions, deleted Safari Cache and .plist, rebooted - not fixed yet. He's using 10.4.8 on a PowerPC G4. Any ideas appreciated (this is the wierdest I've seen in a while!).

Here's what he did. After reading your post, he created another location in his network preferences, entering EXACTLY the same info that was in his old location (he even used the old DNS addresses), except using a new location name. Then he chose the new location and "everything worked". It's one of life's great mysteries. Thanks for your help - it is appreciated.

  • Is this type of set-up possible - private and public network with Airport

We have an office network with Airport. We have internet with a cable modem with routers plugged to it. The network is not now shared with anyone outside the business.
But would it be possible to add a public component to our setup that would give others access to the internet but never, never, never allow them to enter/see/ mess with the private side?
    Tim

Sorry to intrude, I came across this thread while I was looking for some other information and thought that there needed to be a point of clearification to identify some major security vulnerabilities.
With the current config, Cable Modem->Wan port of Router A->Router B plugged into LAN port on Router A
    1. Traffic from Router A would see all traffic sent from router B out to the internet, if I was able to sniff the traffic on router A then I would see everything that router B was passing to the internet...not good idea if Router A is public, (traffic would not be encrypted since this is a hard line pass to the cable modem).
    2. Router A will always be able to see the interface of router B (have to have it this way to perform the passing of IP traffic from one router to the other.) This means that router B will be open for brute force login attempts and any other vulnerabilities that the router might carry, again since this is being accessed from a publicly accessible network it would be hard to stop from happening in todays world.
    3. Router B subnet - If you NAT all the IP's behind router A on it's on subnet (which would include Router B). Uunless router B truly has two interfaces (internal and external) you would not be able to use different subnets and expect to pass traffic all the way to the cable modem because it would not know how to get there.
Again, this post is not meant to cause annomosity, it is to help educate.
I personally think that the safer bet is to get a second hi-speed connection, physical seperation in this case is the best way to go, saves you the worry of getting attacked or snooped on, and keeps your private information safe from the public...unless that is something that you are willing to risk sharing.

  • Private and Public Networks with DHCP, DNS, AD-DS

Hello, I am a student working on creating a server lab at school and am curious if it is possible to set up a unique testing environment. I will describe what I am trying to achieve below.
I have roughly 15 servers inside of my school lab and want to learn some solid skills as I go out into the workforce. The server lab will utilize one server specifically as a AD-DS, DHCP, and DNS Server and another as a TFPT / Terminal Services Server. This
so that I can set up the rest of the servers as a PXE boot environment (This may not be practical in the real world, but want to get some experience with it.) In order to do this I am using a private network that I have created with the networking equipment
I have (Cisco 1800 Series Router, Cisco 2950 Series Switches) inside of the lab, but need to make sure that the servers in the lab can NOT talk to the rest of the world on the school network that will be plugged into the second NIC. This is so that I can download
windows updates from the school network and hopefully apply them through Windows PowerShell (Is this possible?) to the servers in the private lab network.
I am curious if it is possible to set up a AD-DS, DHCP, and DNS server so that it only communicates through one port and not talk to the rest of the world, as well as if it is possible to create a PowerShell script to check for Windows Updates on the school
network, download them, and then distribute them to the servers inside of the lab environment?
Please feel free to ask questions and any help or insight would be appreciated.

What you are attempting to do is quite common.  A simple implementation can be done with what can be called a 'jump server'.  That server is the only machine in your environment that has access to the internet.  You must log into it first
before you have access to your lab environment.  It's basically how I set up my lab.
The jump server can also host Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).  This is a no-cost capability from Microsoft that can automatically download patches from Microsoft.  I then use a group policy in my lab domain to set the update server of my
domain to point at the WSUS server.  If fact, this sort of configuration is quite common in corporate environments, too.  It ensures that corporate machines are not going out to the internet to download patches, allowing the corporate managers to
download and test the patches to see if they break anything before deploying to the rest of the corporate machines as a whole.  So the jump server has one IP address that is routable to the internet and a second network on your lab's domain network.
The jump server does NOT run any routing software, so no machine from the lab can access the external network.

  • Firefox does not automatically load nor find the login page for a public network (i.e. username and password)

To log in on a public network without a password-key (not secured), a user login is required.
After connecting to the network, the browser, upon opening it, normally automatically loads the login page, in order to enter a username and password and connect to the internet.
Firefox doesn't find the login page automatically, so I need to switch to google Chrome just to log in to the network.
Does this have anything to do with user settings in the options of firefox?
    Any ideas?
    thx!

    Hi,
You can try setting the login page as the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/How%20to%20set%20the%20home%20page Home page] and choose to '''Show my home page''' beside '''When Firefox starts:'''.
Alternatively, and/or to preserve your current settings you could also pin it as an always present one-click away [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-are-app-tabs App tab].

  • Jabber login from public network not working

    Hello all,
i am trying to register jabebr from public network with use of EXP-C and E.
    but facing below error:

thanks fro your response to correct me with configuration.
    1) Configuration as it pertains to the design on the Expressways
i applied as per design and still open all ports between firewall for jabber.
    2) Firewall blocking the UDP traffic.
if no rule define, how can it block and what need to configure for jabber with audio?
First question to you is are you using Single NIC or Dual NIC on the Expressway-E?
    i am using single NIC.
If you are doing a Single NIC design and will have a private IP for the Expressway-E you must fulfill these 4 requirements
    1)    Static NAT Mode Enabled on the IP Configuration page of the Exp-E
i will enable it on EXPE>.
    2)    Static NAT Address Configured on the IP page of the Exp-E
what need to EXPE for this NAT option?
    3)    Expressway-C must resolve the Expressway-E FQDN to the Public IP, not the private
if this is resolving private ip, would be any problem?
    4)    NAT Reflection (Hairpinning) must be configured on the firewall so that traffic from the Expressway-C can be sent to the Expressway-E public IP and that can be redirected to the Expressway-E private IP. Please note not all firewalls support this functionality
please tell me how can enable NAT reflection on firewall to working it?
    thanks

  • I'm trying to log into a public network and while the fan blade shows I have a connection I can not get the user agreement to load in Safari. This was working until yesterday, what changed?

I've reset my network settings. I've cleared cache and cookies in the browser. Before yesterday the login screen would appear anytime I attempted to use an app or program that required internet access. Pretty much every program. Now I have a brick tablet at work. I've reset everything I can find. I'm at a dead end.
I've seen other ipads that had the auto login togle and auto join togle under network selection, my ipad does not have those options. Logging in at home is working fine on my private network. This public network is not being reset or forgotten when I choose "forget network" or Safari is blocking the login page and I don't know how to un block it.

Well, when I join a public wifi, a log in page displays a few seconds later, displaying the user agreement. But, earlier today, I was trying to connect my friend's 3GS to a public wifi, and it did not show up. So. I don't really know what happen. I think you should toggle the auto Join to on.

Moderator note; e-mail address removed to stop the spambots getting it

I just saw your post and I resolved this on mine for my wired connection. I'm willing to bet that the issue is the same for wireless. Here's what I found.
    Issue:
During the installation, iTunes installs some network components related to mobile device support over ethernet(Apple Mobile Device Ethernet Service - netaapl.inf). At the same time, according the logs, the install process removed OEM18.inf. This almost exactly coincided with the time that I saw the network connection die (preceded it by a few seconds).
Basically, iTunes appears to be removing a required network component.
    Resolution:
After installing iTunes and the network connection breaking, remove the network device from Device Manager and allow Windows to reinstall it automatically.
The following instructions are for Windows 7, but they are close enough to follow for other versions of Windows.
    1. Click the Start button (Jewel in Vista and Win7).
    2. Right-click Computer and click Manage in the menu that appears (type your password or click Yes if prompted).
    3. On the left side of hte Computer Management window, click Device Manager.
    4. Click the arrow (or plus sign) next to Network Adapters to expand that section.
    5. Right-click your network adapter and click Uninstall in the menu that appears.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Reboot.
Windows should automatically detect and reinstall your network device on boot.

  • Cannot log in to Google "Accounts" with Safari

I cannot seem to login and use Google Services with Safari 2.04.
This started when I discovered I was unable to log in to google calendar in Safari, and became a support ticket to Google (which is still pending) and is really confounding me.
What happens is that I go to go to http://www.google.com/accounts and attempt to login. Once I hit the submit button, accounts page plainly refreshes. However, if I put in a totaly invalid user or password, I will get a message telling me the user or pass is invalid.
In Firefox, if I attempt the same scenario from google.com/accounts, after submit, I get the page that shows me all the services available for me to use, like gMail, calendar, etc.
    Here's what I've already tried.
    Safari troubleshooting...
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Safari
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Caches/Safari
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfig.plist
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    - backup/remove ~/Library/Cookies
After removing all the above, Safari is basically back to Apple's factory default settings. Even after all this, Safari still cannot log in. The same behaviour occurs when I hit the submit button, I'm just brought right back to the same page I started at, and am not logged in. Calendar never renders, or I'm left looking at the accounts log in screen.
It's notable that this issue does not appear to be specific to my google account, but specific to one particular Mac I use. I am able to login to google/accounts on my laptop, but not on my office machine using Safari.
To make it even more mind numbing, it seems to be specific to a user profile on my office Mac. I tried creating a new user account on this same machine, and with the fresh clean home directory, was able to login to google accounts, calendar, etc. So, obviously, a totally clean home directory, library, app support, etc results in usability.
I'm not sure where else to go with this. Are there other supporting files to Safari within my home directory that I missed removing to set it back to "clean". I cannot imagine the problem being specific to the application bundle for Safari since each user on the computer is using the same one, this behaviour must be related to something within the user home directory somewhere.
Anyone else seen this same behaviour and know how to fix it, preferably without just creating a new user and home dir.

  • How can I use Apple Caching Service on a Network with Multiple Public IPs?

    Hello!
I help manage a network of ~4000 clients for a small liberal arts college in Michigan. I'm looking into the possibility of implimenting Apple Caching Server for our network.
We have one 400mbit pipe out to the internet, and all of our clients are given public-facing IPs to the internet. A caching server would be great, especially on update days. All wireless clients are on the same subnet, which is where I'd like the server to be serving the cached copies.
I have installed Mavericks on a fresh machine, downloaded OS X Server 3.0.3, and attempted to start the caching service. This is what I get.
    Unable to start service.
Caching cannot be run on a public network. Consult documentation.
How can I get this up and running?

The way the Caching server works is that the server will be accessing the Internet and when doing so traffic will be coming from it via a particular public IP address. Usually this will not be the address of the server itelf but your router as for most networks NAT is used. In this by far more common scenario the client Macs (and likely iOS devices) will be going through the same router and hence show up via the same public IP address.
If the client request is the same as the address registered via the Caching server then Apple redirect the request via the Caching server.
The setup would look something like this -
               Internet
                    |
                Router (with NAT)
                    |
      (LAN)     +------Caching Server-----Client devices
With this setup because everything is using the same public IP address Apple can reasonably assume everything is on the same network and trigger a redirection to your Caching server.
If you try a setup like the following with the Caching server having its own public IP it will not work because the Caching server and client devices will have different public IP addresses
               Internet
                   |
               Router (no NAT)-------------------+
                   |                                      |
                Firewall (with NAT)       Caching Server
                   |                                      |
                   |                                      |
    (LAN)     +-----Client devices-----------+-----------
Your configuration as described is more like the following
               Internet
                   |
               Router (no NAT)
                   |
    (LAN)     +------Caching Server-----Client devices
With yours not having NAT each device has its own public IP address including the Caching server and Apple cannot redirect traffic as it thinks they are on different networks.

    Hi,
    I am using a T61 7662-cto with Windows 7 Professional
When the T61 is connected on the home network with the wired network, I am not able to log into it remotely from another computer. On my second computer, I see the T61 with Windows Explorer but instead of getting the login window, it appears a Network Error with the message:
“Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network.” With a error code 0x80070035, “The network path was not found.” I tried the “Diagnose” button but it doesn’t give solution.
When the T61 is wireless connected, there is no problem. I can access it from my second computer.
