Log ldap queries and authentication on Windows Server 2003

Good afternoon
I am in the process of decommissioning a Windows 2003 R2 domain controller and I want ensure that no custom applications are using this DC solely for authentication and LDAP queries (unfortunately this is not documented anywhere), and if there are find out
there IP's so I can get there configuration changed to point at another domain controller.
Could someone recommend a good way of doing this? Perhaps a 3rd party tool?
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
without any documentation about fix use of this specific DC you can just plug the network cable and wait. Inform users about this and ask them to report asap if they realize not working programs.
Additional check login scripts, GPO settings and other scripts that may run with scheduled tasks on every server.
Best regards

• Cucm 9.1.2 and Active Directory(Windows Server 2003 Standart Edition SP2)

      Hello!
Can CUCM 9.1.2 support an integration with Active Directory(Windows Server 2003 Standart Edition SP2)? How do I have to write down LDAP Manager Distinguished Name? I can find supporting only Active Directory 2003 in documentations without reference to Operation System.

Yes, it is possible.
Check this how-to if you have any doubts about the process.

• After MS13-098 and SecurityAdvisory(2915720), Windows Server 2003 Remote Desktop(TermService) cannot start service

I have trouble with Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard. I installed the KB2893294(MS13-098) patch, and I changed the registry that is suggested actions of Security Advisory(2915720) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisory/2915720
Suggested Actions:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Wintrust\Config]
"EnableCertPaddingCheck"="1"
After rebooting the event viewer(system) says:
     Event Type: Error
     Event Source: TermService
     Event Category: None
     Event ID: 1014
     User:  N/A
     Description:
     Cannot load illegal module: C:\Windows\system32\rdpwsx.DLL
After I cannot use Remote Desktop Connection from other client.
So I check the all security patches and other hotfixies. I checked the KB2653956 and KB958476.
But TermService do not recover the error.
And then, I delete the "EnableCertPaddingCheck" registry and reboot systems.
TermService have no error. I can use Remote Desktop Connection from other client.
After KB2893294 installed, Remote Desktop Connection cannot use from other client that "EnableCertPaddingCheck" registry set to "1".
Other Windows Server 2008 systems do not effect the KB2893294 patch. But All Windows Server 2003 systems cannot use the Remote Desktop Connections after the KB2893294 patch.

Update on this issue:
The debug team has accepted the issue and has identified it as a regression.  Right now they're targeting *June* as the release date for a fix.  I'm attempting to educate them that customers don't just install patches the day (or even month) they're
released and that the fix needs to be moved up in priority to give a minimum of 60 days to install the patch before the time-bomb explodes.
In the meantime, a workaround has been provided that will turn off the new functionality.  Note that I have not yet had a chance to test this.  It entails creating a new DWORD registry entry--UseLegacyPE--and setting it to 1.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ImageHlp\UseLegacyPE
I will update this thread when I have further information.

• Running Forms and Reports 6i on Windows Server 2003

Hello,
Has anyone managed to get Forms and Reports 6i (running on 9iAS web) to run succesfully on Windows Server 2003? If so would you mind sharing what you needed to do to get it to work. I don't care about any of the other components of 9iAS other than forms and reports. Also is it possible to run on the 64bit version of this OS?
The problem I'm encountering (on the 64bit version of Windows) is that I can't get our webforms to launch any reports. The forms run just fine. I can run the report manually using rwrun60.exe and entering all the parameters by hand. BUT when I run the report from within the form a rwrun60.exe process starts and runs at full cpu. After a bit it dies but the form still continues to wait for it. The only way to get out is to close the browser and forcefully kill the form instance. If anyone has any ideas on what this could be any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Jan,
I haven't tried to run Forms and Reports on Windows Server 2003, but I have worked on Windows XP and UNIX with F/R 6i 9i and 10g. I never had much luck with 9i Forms and Reports, 10g rel 1 was better, but 10g rel 2 is best. I recommend you bite the bullet and convert to 10g AS, Forms & Reports 10g rel 2. After running your 6i F/R to 10g through the converter, you may need to adjust fonts and colors.
Regarding your specific question, I am surprised that the rwrun60 works at all with 9i AS. And rwrun90 probably won't run the 6i version of your reports without recompiling in the 9 version.
Hope this helps,
Frank

• Which VMware support Windows 7 as Host and Windows Server 2003 as Guest OS

Folks,
Hello. I need to install PeopleSoft PIA in Windows Server 2003.
Because my laptop is preinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium Editon and cannot dual boot multiple Operating systems. I have to install VMware in Host Windows 7 and then install Windows Server 2003 as Guest OS for PIA.
I have installed VMware Server 2.0.2 into Host Windows 7 and Windows Server 2003 as Guest OS. Everything works fine for a while. But VMware Server Home Page https://mylaptop:8333/ui cannot display any more.
I have found that Windows 7 is not a supported Host Operating System for VMware Server 2 and strange thing might happen anytime. I found that "VMware Player 3" is fully supported Windows 7 as Host OS but is not supported Windows Server 2003 as Guest OS.
Does any folks know which VMware product support Windows 7 as Host OS and Windows Server 2003 as Guest OS ?
Many thanks in advance.

Hi,
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
1.
Ensure the printer is compatible with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2003 and the drivers are up-to-date.
2.
Try the following method:
Printers that use ports that do not begin with COM, LPT,
or USB are not redirected in a remote desktop or a terminal services session
Hope this helps. Thanks.
Regards,
Nicholas Li - MSFT
That doesn't apply to Windows 7 Machines. I'm having the same problem as Acer_, I have a RDP Session from a Windows 7 Machine to a Windows XP machine and the local printer was available a few days ago but isn't anymore. The drivers are installed on both PC's
and are compatible with Windows 7.

• New Windows server 2003 Hyper-V guest fails to boot

Hello,
I'm currently doing some virtualization experiments on my new server hardware. The host hardware is:
IBM x3650 M4
x2 Xeon E5-2609
32GB RAM
x2 480 GB SSDs
Server OS: Windows server 2012
I'd like to test some legacy app virtualization. I've configured a VM and have installed Windows server 2003. The install is done via DVD. The issue at hand is that after the initial installation, the server fails to boot. The VM goes into a reboot loop
and so far the only error logging I'm able to find is in the hosts event log.

Hi ,
First , please refer to the supported guest OS of windows 2012 hyper-v :
http://technet.microsoft.com/library/hh831531.aspx
2003/R2 should be with sp2 and max 2 virtual processors .
"'LegacyTS' was reset because an unrecoverable error occurred on a virtual processor that caused a triple fault."
If the issue is not due to the above items , you can try to check the "CPU compatibility " in that VM settings for troubleshooting:
     Hope it helps

• How to Expand the Screen of Windows Server 2003 on VMware Server 2 ?

Folks,
Hello. Because Windows 7 is not compatible to be installed PeopleSoft PIA, I have to install VMware Server 2 and then install Windows Server 2003, that is compatible with PIA, on the virtual machine.
But when I open Windows Server 2003 on the virtual machine, the screen of Win2K3 is very small, and its size is about 1/4 of the screen of my computer screen. This is not comfortable to work for a long time.
Does any folks know how to expand the screen of Windows Server 2003 on VMware Server 2 virtual machine so that its size covers the entire screen of my computer ?
Thanks in advance !
Lucy

Did you already installed the VMWare tools onto your VMWare guest OS ? Generally, it helps a lot to be able to redefine a larger screen definition.

• Issues with creating PDF's (Acrobat 8.1.6. and 9.1.3) in Windows Server 2003 (32 bit) and Windows XP (64bit)

We have a report package that generates customised reports
We generate the PDF's by simply "printing" to the Adobe PDF printer
In Windows XP Pro (32 Bit) the report creates the PDF perfectly
In Windows Server 2003 (32 Bit) or Windows Xp Pro (64 Bit) the PDF is created 90% perfect but some of text has slipped on the page.
Whilst we are looking into the report writer (Dev Express) I would like to rule out any Acrobat issues.
With thanks
Mark

I think it will work fine if you use the "Enterprise" authentication option.  It may have dependencies on 32 bit components.  So, that's why we must run IIS in 32 bit mode even though it's on a 64 bit OS.  That means CR supports 64 bit OS systems only if you bring down other components that CR uses to 32 bit levels.  I'm not sure if that is considered "full support".
We are trying to use the LDAP authentication option, but that tab is disabled.  Other tabs such as Active Directory and WinNT are disabled as well.  There maybe another component that we must bring down to 32 bit processing.
Is there a way to enable the LDAP authentication configuration tab?
thanks

• I am trying to remote into a Windows Server 2003 from a Windows 7 machine and having issues

I am trying to remote into a Windows Server 2003 from a Windows 7 machine.  It says "The terminal server has exceeded the maximum number of allowed connections".
My first stop in trying to solve this problem was here:
howtogeek.com
And it says:

This problem happens because Windows only allows two remote terminal services connections when you are in administrative mode, and you’ve either got two people already on that server, or more likely, you’ve got a disconnected session that still thinks
it is active.
The problem with this error is that you have to actually get on the server console to fix the problem if the server isn’t in a domain. (If you are in a domain, then just open Terminal Services Manager and log off or disconnect the sessions)

So it seems to suggest that all I have to do really is to run the  Terminal Services Manager but I cannot find it.
This web site from mssqltips.com (click here) says all I need to do is first execute "mstsc /
admin" from the command line.  But, when I do that, I get a message when I try to remote to the server, that says this: "To log on to this remote console session, you must have administrative permissions on this computer".
So, what now?  What do you suggest?

Hi Bobby,
Yes, it is by design. By default, Windows Server only accepts two concurrent administrative sessions (Administrative Mode). It means that only two administrators can work on the server at
the same time.
If you would like more concurrent sessions, you need to purchase RDS CALs, install Terminal Services related server roles with proper configurations on the server.

• Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition 32 bits Service Pack 2 never finishes searching for updates and use 100% of CPU.

Hi everyone, I am having issues updating a clean Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition 32 bits Service Pack 2, so any help with be appreciated cause I've already tried all my cards for the past 5 days in this particular issue without success.
All I did so far is installing Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with Service Pack 2, open IE to update, it keeps searching for updates and never stop, after 20mn to 30mn the process svchost.exe start using 100% of my CPU.
I already tried the following scenarios:
1-  Install IE8, install the update KB927891 and the Windows Update Agent 3.0 (I already had this one installed). Reboot and run windows update trough IE8 and the problem did not solved.
2- Install those 2 software "MicrosoftFixit.wu.MATSKB.Run" and "MicrosoftFixit50777", open IE to update, it still hangs and continues eating my CPU. This is the output of "MicrosoftFixit".
Windows Update error 0x8007000D(2014-01-06-T-06_06_34A) --> Not Fixed
Cryptographic service components are not registered (This service is actually running successfully) --> Not Fixed
3- I found the following script that would register some DLL, deleting the "SoftwareDistribution" and forcing windows update to solve the problem and nothing happened either.
Link to script:

Herein is the root cause of your issue. A topic that's been discussed in several blogs, forums, and even in the media since September regards a known issue with attempting to patch IE6 RTM via Windows Update.
Aside from that particular issue... browsing the Internet with an unpatched instance of IE6, especially from a Windows Server system, is also asking for a world of hurt.
Might I suggest the following:
Download the IE8 for Windows Server 2003 installer to a thumb drive.
Download the latest Cumulative Security Update for IE8 for Windows Server 2003 to a thumb drive.
Reinstall Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2.
Upgrade to IE8 from the thumb drive installer and apply the
Cumulative Security Update.
Now your machine is capable of safely browsing to Windows Update to install the rest of the updates (well, maybe, there's also all those other Security Updates from the past seven years that your machine still has vulnerabilites for -- even those seven
years of updates are going to take a Very Long Time to scan for, download, and install).
Why don't you have a WSUS server? -- noting, wryly, that you've posted in the *WSUS* forum.

• Windows server 2008 R2 x64 Authentication failure while try to access Windows server 2003 R2

Hello,
I try to access Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard from Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 standard using integrated windows authentication . And because my application tries to read SQL server i'm getting and error that user is not trusted. Then I tried to open a
simple shared folder on  2003 and none of the users is able to do it. Both servers are part of common workgroup in the same IP range. Using domain is not an option. Migrating 2003 to 2008 is not an option either. The specific DB provider I have to use
supports only windows authentication, so creating user into SQL server is not an option too. I have tested many applications and cases which requires/uses windows authentication and non of the manage to connect.
Any help is very welcome because things are urgent!

• Out of memory using Windows Server 2003 and Oracle 9.2.0.3

Hi,
I just installed both Windows Server 2003 and Oracle 9.2.0.3. The server I am using has 4 gigabytes of memory installed, and windows shows that to be the actual physical memory on the server. The paging file is 8 gigabytes for a total of 12 gigabytes of virtual memory.
Using the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant, I create a new database using default values. After verifying the installation worked OK (database started, queries ran), I attempted to change some of the memory parameters and was able to start the database using about 1.4 gigabytes of total SGA, with the O/S using about .3 gigabytes for a total of 1.7 gigabytes. I then attempted to change the buffer cache + 1 gigabyte for a total of 2 gigabytes. Now the database will not start and I get an out of memory error ora-27102 with an additional O/S memory error of "O/S Error: (OS 8) Not enough storage is available to process this command".
So, I have two problems:
1) With 4 gigabytes installed, and the O/S using only about 300 megabytes, why isn't Oracle able to take advantage of the memory on this machine past the 1.7 gigabytes (as reported by Windows task manager).
2) How do I change the spfile memory parameters so the database will start using spfile? I can start the database pointing to a pfile with lesser memory parameters, but I don't know how to effect change on the spfile, since I cannot start with the spfile.
Both these technologies (9.2.0.3 and Server 2003) are new to me, so any insight would be appreciated!

CREATE SPFILE
Purpose
Use the CREATE SPFILE statement to create a server parameter file from a client-side initialization parameter file. Server parameter files are binary files that exist only on the server and are called from client locations to start up the database.
Server parameter files let you make persistent changes to individual parameters. When you use a server parameter file, you can specify in an ALTER SYSTEM SET parameter statement that the new parameter value should be persistent. This means that the new value applies not only in the current instance, but also to any instances that are started up subsequently. Traditional client-side parameter files do not let you make persistent changes to parameter values. Because they are located on the server, these files allow for automatic database tuning by Oracle and for backup by Recovery Manager (RMAN).
To use a server parameter file when starting up the database, you must create it from a traditional text initialization parameter file using the CREATE SPFILE statement.
All instances in an Real Application Clusters environment must use the same server parameter file. However, when otherwise permitted, individual instances can have different settings of the same parameter within this one file. Instance-specific parameter definitions are specified as SID.parameter = value, where SID is the instance identifier.
The method of starting up the database with a server parameter file depends on whether you create a default or nondefault server parameter file. Please refer to "Creating a Server Parameter File: Examples" for examples of how to use server parameter files.
See Also:
CREATE PFILE for information on creating a regular text parameter file from a binary server parameter file
Oracle9i Database Administrator's Guide for information on pre-Oracle9i initialization parameter files and Oracle9i server parameter files
Oracle9i Real Application Clusters Administration for information on using server parameter files in a Real Application Clusters environment
Prerequisites
You must have the SYSDBA or the SYSOPER system privilege to execute this statement. You can execute this statement before or after instance startup. However, if you have already started an instance using spfile_name, you cannot specify the same spfile_name in this statement.
Syntax
create_spfile::=
Text description of create_spfile
Semantics
spfile_name
This clause lets you specify a name for the server parameter file you are creating.
If you do not specify spfile_name, Oracle uses the platform-specific default server parameter filename. If spfile_name already exists on the server, this statement will overwrite it. When using a default server parameter file, you start up the database without referring to the file by name.
If you do specify spfile_name, you are creating a nondefault server parameter file. In this case, to start up the database, you must first create a single-line traditional parameter file that points to the server parameter file, and then name the single-line file in your STARTUP command.
See Also:
"Creating a Server Parameter File: Examples" for information on starting up the database with default and nondefault server parameter files
Oracle9i Database Administrator's Guide for Windows (or other appropriate operating system specific documentation) for default parameter file names
pfile_name
Specify the traditional initialization parameter file from which you want to create a server parameter file.
If you specify pfile_name, the parameter file must reside on the server. If it does not reside in the default directory for parameter files on your operating system, you must specify the full path.
If you do not specify pfile_name, Oracle looks in the default directory for parameter files on your operating system for the default parameter filename, and uses that file. If that file does not exist in the expected directory, Oracle returns an error.
Note:
In a Real Application Clusters environment, you must first combine all instance parameter files into one file before specifying it in this statement to create a server parameter file. For information on accomplishing this step, see Oracle9i Real Application Clusters Setup and Configuration.
Examples
Creating a Server Parameter File: Examples
The following example creates a default server parameter file from a client initialization parameter file named t_init1.ora:
CREATE SPFILE
FROM PFILE = '$ORACLE_HOME/work/t_init1.ora';
Note:
Typically you will need to specify the full path and filename for parameter files on your operating system. Please refer to your Oracle operating system documentation for path information.
When you create a default server parameter file, you subsequently start up the database using that server parameter file by using the SQL*Plus command STARTUP without the PFILE parameter, as follows:
STARTUP
The following example creates a nondefault server parameter file s_params.ora from a client initialization file named t_init1.ora:
CREATE SPFILE = 's_params.ora'
FROM PFILE = '$ORACLE_HOME/work/t_init1.ora';
When you create a nondefault server parameter file, you subsequently start up the database by first creating a traditional parameter file containing the following single line:
spfile = 's_params.ora'
The name of this parameter file must comply with the naming conventions of your operating system. You then use the single-line parameter file in the STARTUP command. The following example shows how to start up the database, assuming that the single-line parameter file is named new_param.ora:
STARTUP PFILE=new_param.ora

• Tiger 10.4.4 or 5 and Windows Server 2003 Services For Macintosh unstable??

We are running these tested Mac clients here:
macMini 1.5Ghz 10.4.5
G4 Quicksilver 800Mhz 10.4.4
G4 Dual Mirror PowerMac 10.4.4
They mount volumes on these servers:
Dell Windows Server 2000 (SFM)
Dell Windows Server 2003 (SFM)
Xserve G4 OS 10.3.9 Server
Macs sleep settings are this:
Computer sleep=1 hour
Display sleep=1 hour
Hard drive=sleep
Symptom:
When the Mac goes to sleep, the 2 Windows Mac File servers volumes are
disconnected. Upon wake, the error message stating they were disconnected are waiting.
The Xserve volume is untouched. This should not be a problem
since the Windows servers are running Appletalk via IP not
native Appletalk protocol.
Comments:
Might be related to the lookupd bug in Tiger? http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/macosx1042/topic3108.html
Here’s the system log from the macMini: (13:47 is when I woke it and manually mounted the volumes)

• Windows Server 2003 and problem with SSL connection (TLS)

Hi,
We are forcing a problem with SLL/TLS connection on a machine Windows Server 2003 SP2.
We spent hours trying to solve it without any result.
SYMPTOMS
No SSL connection can be established in any application since last year, e.g.:
we cannot do any windows update, because there is a time verification over SSL on the windows update website (there is an error that the time is incorrect while it is up-to-date)
we cannot open any website in Internet Explorer over https
when we try to connect to the SQL Server (database SQL 2008 hosted on the same server) with Management Studio it fails with an error: "A connection
was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake.(provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - Could not
contact LSA)(Microsoft SQL Server)"
in a custom applications which sends requests over https we receive an error: "Could not establish trust relationship for SSL/TLS secure channel"
Everything seems to point at some SSL problem somewhere deep inside Windows.
We installed several patches, but without any result.
Can anybody help?
Regards,
Dawid

Hi, thanks for answers,
- In IE both SSL2.0 and TLS1.0 are checked. We tried to disable TLS1.0 - with no results.
- In  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\Schannel both SSL2.0
and TLS1.0 are enabled. We also tried to dislable TLS1.0 on the Client side - with no resuts.
- In
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL EventLogging is set to 3, so it should log warnings
and errors. But we cannot find any related logs in EventLog
Unfortunately we are still in the same place.
