Log Out Freeze

I have seen this topic discussed, but no resolution.
It seems that whenever I update an app (as I did for Default Folder a few minutes ago) that requires you to logout, the logout begins but then freezes. Only way out is to reboot.
Permissions repaired--!
Any thoughts re: a solution.
Thanks for your time.

This morning I tried again to log out and it did not freeze and switched to another account. I realised that the issue could had been caused by a conflict with an external Iomega USB drive, that prior to log out I had disconnected in the trash, but when logging out, it seemed that the system was looking for something that it did not find to switch to the accounts mask.
Actually, before the recent OS update I used to switch from an account to another with the hard disk connected, and I did not get any problem with that, but last night I did.
How does it sound to you?
Thanks

when I open itunes and try to log out it freezes.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • All animation freezes after Log Out used

I've searched and searched and cannot locate another issue similar to this...wondering if someone could offer advice. After I took the iTunes 7, Front Row, and QuickTime updates recently, my dock animation, menu animations, etc freezes after using Log Out feature and switching to a different account. When I log into another account (or log back out and into my main account), all animation is gone with the Dock, menus, etc. I have to re-boot in order to get animation back. What is weird, is that it appears to just be animation. Functionally, I can still click on items in the dock or menu bar and have them do what they should. Just no animation. Not even the blue highlight as I move down over menu items. I have repaired permissions with nothing out of the ordinary. Any other ideas for me? Thanks in advance.
PS: I do not have fast user switching turned on. I always use log out user when needed.

Just one bump here for the weekend. Anyone else encountered this or can offer suggestions? Thanks.

  • My computer freezes when a user logs out

Since I updated to Tiger (10.4.5) from Panther (10.3.9) it often happens that, when a user logs out from his account, the computer freezes. The mouse arrow won't move, so it's not possible anymore for anyone to log back in. I have to hold the start-button to force the computer to a shutdown. After restart everything works fine.
There are 3 other users (the kids) apart from my administrator account.
Any idea what to do ?

I suggest reinstalling the 10.4.5 COMBO update, repair permissions after restart, and restart again.

  • Mac desktop is freezing, crashing, auto logging out

While playing a game last night my computer crashed the app and the computer automatically logged out. Ever since that, whenever I try to log on to any account it freezes and logs out immediately. When i safe boot it everything works, but it says all of the games I usually play, can't be run due to not sufficient specs. I tried a pvram reset and repaired my disk even though I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I'm running out of ideas and thought id post something here before taking it into an apple store. It's currently running on 10.9.3, and it's a late 2013 model, 27 inch. Any suggestions are helpful at this point! Thanks

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Mountain Lion won't sleep, shut down, restart, or log out.

    Hi All,
After Mountain Lion my 2010 iMac 27" won't sleep, shut down, restart, or log out.
Basically most functionalities of clicking the apple icon are disabled - "About this Mac" doesn't work either.
    Please help!
Before Apple fixes this, is there another way of putting my Mac to sleep or shut down?

Just adding another voice to the chorus.  Since upgrading to Mountain Lion my computer will not sleep.  The cursor freezes when I try to invoke sleep but the computer and monitor remain on.  The cursor unfreezes when I tap the spacebar the way I would normally do to wake from sleep.  Fortunately, shutdown, restart and logout function normally, so I guess I should count my blessings.  This isn't my only problem with Mountain Lion, but I didn't want to muddy the waters on this thread with other issues.

  • Problem deleting photos and cannot shut down or log out

I have managed to put a whole lot of photos on my desk top which I want to transfer to the trash can (over 5000). When I moved them to trash an error message "Item ....jpg is used by Mac OSX and cannot be opened" and you have to press OK. This is happening for every photo. It won't let me shut down or log out. I don't want to have to press OK 5000 times. Can anyone help?

Dr Bettina, I had similar problems with Mavericks. I installed it on a Mini and a 13" MacBook Pro. I can't speak to your disdplay issues, but I can confirm the inability to logout, shut down, or restarft without a forced, power button shut down. I can also report frequent System Prefs freezes and finder issues, like folder contents taking half a minuite or more to render, or not appearing at all. And while a few Adobe CC apps actually ran faster, InDesign ran like molasses uphill in Decemner.
I tried uninstalling or disabling numerous 3rd party apps and pref panes. I unplugged everything but the keyboard, ran DiskWarrier, repaired permissions, did fsck -f, trashed various preference files, reinstalled the OS... You name it, and I tried it — short of a potion using eye of newt.
After two days of totally hosed productivity, I restored OS 10.8.5 on the Mini so I could actually get some work done. However, I've decided to leave Mavericks on the MBP as a sort of crash dummy, and will install and thoroughly test all updates until stability has been achieved. Then — and only then — will I upgrade the Mini to Mavericks, even if it means waiting 'til a .2 or even .3 update.
    Good luck to you...

  • Log Out hangs

Log Out is constantly hanging, forcing me to constantly force a shut down.
    Any ideas?

    Hi papa-kostas,
Based on your post, it seems you are experiencing slow performance and freezing when logging out of your Mac. I have linked to an article that provides a series of potential fixes:
OS X Yosemite: If your Mac runs slowly
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has easily available. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Memory. See the help that came with the app to see its system requirements.
To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click Memory, then click Memory Upgrade Instructions in the lower-left corner. documentation that came with the app to its system requirements.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Overview.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click Displays. The name of the graphics card in your computer is displayed in the middle of the window.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, move files to another disk, then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If you have problems with your disk, use Disk Utility to verify and try and fix any issues.
Use Activity Monitor to see if a particular app or activity is making a large demand on your Mac.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • What do I do to straighten out this problem... When I try to access Firefox after having logged out of a previous session I get a msg that Firefox is still running and I have to restart the computer in order to access internet.

What do I do to straighten out this problem: When I try to access Firefox after I've logged out of a previous session I get a msg that Firefox is still running and I have to restart the computer in order to access internet...

All you need to do is wait. While Firefox appears closed, it's not. It doing house cleaning. Cleaning out cookies and cache. How long it takes depends upon how much garbage you have collected.
If you start the Task Manager and open the Process window, you will be able to see when Firefox has finished up and closed down.
If you forced Firefox to close using the task manager, then the house keeping process seems to freeze up.
Also, as you've already found out from the above link, some programs and plugins will prevent Firefox from closing properly. I've found this less common then simply being in a hurry. But you need to also consider it.

  • Client logging out not working

I am having two issues , the first happened quite recently but I don't know if I caused it. Users on client machines cannot fully log out. The computers stop the logging out process when they get to the desktop image, The second issue is that when some clients log out the show up as disabled/asleep in server administration. This prevents them from logging in later, without me manually disconnecting them at the server. I work in a school and we have set students with the restriction of not having mutiple log-in privileges. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • Subscribe to CC, logged out, logged in and now all apps are trial versions.

Adobe recommended I log out of my CC account as a solution to application freezes. When I logged back in, I'm told I have trial versions and they need serial numbers. What the heck?

Adding to previous resolution, just wanted to mention that do check the host file too as they block Adobe at times.
Creative cloud do not need a serial number.
In case it is not signing in successfully please try the following:
I don't know which operating system you are working on so i am giving you some steps windows and MAC OS:
       Windows:
In windows 7 navigate to following location:
         /windows/system32/drivers/etc
       1. look out for "Hosts" file
       2. Open it with notepad
       3. Check if you have any entry for Adobe
       4. Remove the entries and try again launching any product from CC
       Mac:
       1. Please click on "Go" and navigate to /private/etc
       2. Open "hosts" file and check out for any entries for Adobe.com
       3. Remove the entries and save the file
       4.  try again launching any product from CC

  • Unable to log out

The computer does not allow me to log out and then it freezes to the point nothing can open or be shut down.   I am using mountain lion.  When I open force quit only finder is open.  Any help would be great

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash this file:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    Immediately test log out.

  • Blue Screen with Turning Wheel appears when logging out

This started happening when I partitioned my HD to run Windows, but continued after I reset Boot Camp. When I log out, rather then going to the log in screen(shared computer), the screen turns blue and a small gear wheel starts turning in the bottom portion of the screen. After about 10 minutes, it stops turning and appears to freeze. It takes almost half an hour to an hour to log back in once the blue screen disappears. Is there anyway to get rid of this?

Zap the PRAM and Reset  the SMC Then, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8963.htm and http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html for more info..
