Log & Transfer 5D Mark II Footage

Hello all,
Well I just bought an Imac 27" and Final Cut Studio in order to work with my Canon 5D Mark II video files. I've been a PC guy my whole life so I'm trying to figure out Final Cut Pro which is pretty similar to Adobe Premiere. Anyways from what I have gathered, I need to Log & Transfer my files but convert them to ProRes422. I see the option in the Log & Transfer area to choose ProRes but there are 4 different choices.
ProRes422 (HQ)
ProRes422
ProRes422 LT
ProRes422 Proxy
I'm guessing I want HQ but I'm not exactly sure what the difference is between these choices. What would be the best choice in order to edit 5D Mark II footage in FCP for the web and or DVDs?
Thanks!

It'd be great if you did a side-by-side comparison and posted your particular findings. For a while now, the standard answer has been "ProRess 422" but it seems like some folks are getting acceptable results with going to LT.

  • FCP Crash when opening log and transfer with some AVCHD footage on a card

    Hi,
I'm using a freshly (re)installed version of FCP 7 on a brand new macbookpro loaded with 8gb ram and equipped with a small 2ghz Intel Core i7
I get footage shot on Panasonic ag-hmr10 minicams coming on SD cards as AVCHD footage. Sometimes the files are quite big, 17gb of compressed footage.
When I go to log and transfer, to convert the footage in apple prores, the l/t window opens, I see a preview of my footage, than the spinning beach ball of death shows up and FCP crashes every time. I've tried deleting the preferences and reinstalling the software. Still, it keeps crashing. Now the same file on a different computer equipped with FCP will be processed, slowly but surely.
Now I know I can work around this problem by going to toast as an encoder, but I want to fix this issue so I can operate from FCP. I've seen this problem posted before but never found any good solution.
    Any suggestions?

Have you tried setting the L&T AVCHD audio conversion prefs to plain stereo?
    Open the L&T window.
Click on the gear icon towards the upper center of the frame.
Select "Plain Stereo" For the AVCHD plugin.

  • RED footage ProRes Log&Transfer VS ProRes Red Alert

Anyone noticing a quality difference between RED ProRes encoding in log & transfer compared to Red Alert ?
Looks like Red Alert images look far more crisp and more contrast.

Well, if you use Red Alert or Red Cine, you can do a one pass on the footage during the transcode, and if you use log and transfer, you can't... I sort of like doing the one pass if you don't have a Kona card to add a LUT with.
If you like the look better in the RED software, use it.

  • When you Log & Transfer 720p 25pN footage it shows as DVCPRO HD 720p50

    Hi,
When I Log & Transfer 720p 25pN (native format) footage it shows in the Browser as DVCPRO HD 720p50 (though with 25fps). Why is that? Is that a mistake?

The COMPRESSOR is 720p50. The FRAME RATE is 25... right? That is right. The FORMAT is 720p50...because it is based on a tape format. But the frame rate...the rate it is playing, is 25fps.
Things are fine. Nothing to worry about. If it said the RATE was 50, then it'd be 50fps...but it is 25fps.

  • Log & Transfer of Canon HF 11: error message

    Hi guys,
I just got a new canon HF 11 (basically the same as the HF 10) and i tried to import footage using Log & Transfer but every time I click "add clip to queue" it spins a grey icon for a few seconds which then turns to a red circle with an exclamation mark inside and says "Error: No Data". I have tried giving the clip an in and out mark but this doesn't help.
    Any ideas,
    Thanks

I have had a similar problem with my Canon HG21 which has both hard disk and 32GB flash drive. My method is to copy files from the Hard Disk to the flash drive and then place the flash drive into a card reader. I was able to see FCE downloading in log and transfer for a second or two and then it went into an idle mode and never downloaded the file.
My solution was to delete ALL from from the flash drive followed by copying the videos and stills from the hard disk onto the clean flash drive. I realize you don't have the luxury of the hard disk, but perhaps you can extract the files using the Voltiac tool to clone the Canon structure from the camera and see if log and transfer will work directly from your hard disk on the Mac.

  • Big black marks after rendering  DNxHD Codec after using some effects, using Eos Mark III footage on FCP7

    Dear All,
I hope you can help me. Working on an IMac with FCP 7. It's the first time that I am using footage shot with Canon EOS Mark III. I did not expect this to be such a problem as it was almost impossible to edit with the footage, as I kept on getting the beach ball and then it would crash. Finally fixed the problem by downloading the DnxHD Codec and was able to do a rough edit on a compressed timeline to make the job faster and show a rough cut to the client.
Now I am trying to cut an HD version, where I'm using the same footage with matched timeline settings and when I don't do anything and render it, it looks fine. The minute I use an effect (e.g colour correction or a simple crop) and render, I literally get big black blotches or marks all over the image. Any advise on where I should look to fix the problem?
    Many thanks!
    Amanda

Convert the footage to ProRes LT before editing.
Your camera shoots H.264 and Final Cut Pro does not like that one bit.
You can use FCP's Log & Transfer function to do this (you might need to install a Canon Plug-in first) or you can do the conversion in Compressor.

  • Random crashes when doing routine editing, then log & transfer

I have been experiencing crashes when performing simple editing then returning to Log & Transfer to pull in more footage into the project. I did a permissions repair which seemed to work for a short time - but now it is crashing again. I also followed Shane's advice to disable the Remove Advanced Pulldown and Multiple Frames setting in the Log & Transfer preferences. I have a new MacBook Pro 2.66 ghz and new Final Cut Studio with Final Cut Pro 7.
Here is a portion of the error log - this is basically the same error when the crash occurs:

  • Log & Transfer w/Canon t1i

I've installed the CanonEOSPlugin & changed the cameras.plist as described here:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11691022&#11691022
When I go to FCP File>Log & Transfer, the screen comes up, but nothing shows up in the queue. If I try to add a folder & point to any of the folders via my card reader, I get a warning message that says "... contains unsupported media or contains an invalid directory structure..."
My footage is 720p. I'm using a card reader & other info is listed below in my profile. Anyone else have any luck with this plug-in &/or suggestions for getting it to work with my setup?

Yes, I performed the hack. Here it is... does it look right to you? I read somewhere to move the T1i to the top so I did. See below.
Yes, I copied the whole card. There were 2 folders & I dragged them both over to a new folder I created on the external hard drive called Rebel. When I point to that Rebel folder, I still get the warning message.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Log & Transfer with Mac OS 10.6.2

Having previously had a fully working, and it has to be said impressive, installation of FCE 4.0.1 I attempted to ingest some new footage recently. I had not used FCE for about 3 months as I had no need to.
FCE started up great and I was able to create a new project as well; but when I opened the Log & Transfer window and attempted to add the folder I'd copied from the camera's SD card, nothing. The folder name does not appear as the source at the top of the window and no files appear in the top list pane.
Now to troubleshoot here's my line of thought:-
    1. The latest footage is corrupt.
    2. The system has changed since Iast used FCE. (This is true and I will come to this soon)
    3. The FCE install is corrupted.
So here's what I've done to address each of the above steps.
    1. I returned to the last footage I'd successfully ingested and I could not add that footage's folder to the L&T window either, as a precaution I then trashed the preferences and tried again, still no good.
    2. As stated above my system has changed as since the last time I used FCE I've upgraded to Mac OS 10.6 and subsequently 10.6.2 also I've installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0. So to troubleshoot this I needed a test bed and so used a spare internal SATA drive as a new Startup Drive and performed the following.
    i. Erased the drive and re-formated as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    ii. Installed Mac OS 10.5.
iii. Patched 10.5 with three iterations of Software Update.
    iv. Installed FCE 4.0.
    v. Patched FCE to 4.0.1.
vi. Tested FCE and it worked perfectly, interesting but not the solution I would like.
vii. Installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 and then tested FCE and it worked perfectly.
viii. Updated Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 and then tested FCE and it worked perfectly.
ix. Upgraded Mac OS to 10.6 and then tested FCE and it failed to add folders to the L&T pane.
    x. Patched Mac OS to 10.6.2 with three more iterations of Software Update and then tested FCE and it failed to add folders to the L&T pane.
Ok a short pause in the overly detailed breakdown of what has occurred (I don't want anybody to be in any doubt as to my veracity in troubleshooting).
So as far as the above sequence is concerned Mac OS 10.6.x does not support FCE and AVCHD media, as an added 'feature' after two attempts at adding a path to the footage FCE crashes completely.
Maybe a 'clean' clean install is what is needed.
xi. Erased the drive and re-formated as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) again.
xii. Installed Mac OS 10.6 and patched with three iterations of Software Update.
xiii. Installed FCE 4.0 and patched with Software Update to 4.0.1.
xiv. Tested FCE and it still will not add a path to any media and crashes after a handful of attempts at getting it to do so.
So the third of possible causes i.e. FCE install corrupted is excluded as cause 2 Mac OS problems are the culprit.
Am I the only person with a professional spec (albeit a little long in the tooth, yet very capable) machine; built with the latest OS as per manufacturers recommendations; FCE software installed as per best practice and the media stored on a dedicated drive in the AVHCD file structure (as a footnote the software will not "see" the camera either) who is unable to use FCE as it will not do what it says on the tin. Unless the tin is 10.5.
Spleen vented is anybody able to help?

Impressive - you've been very methodical & thorough - I wish most posts were as thoroughly detailed as yours! But something else is going on. I have FCE 4.0.1 on 10.6.2 and it's working perfectly; ditto for a lot of other people here.
You mentioned that you +"attempted to add the folder I'd copied from the camera's SD card"+ - have you tried Log&Transfer directly from your camcorder? If not, try that and let us know what happens (or not).
When you copied that folder from your SD card, did you copy the +entire folder structure+ (all the way from the root of the SD card) or just the folder containing the video? That could be the problem (you need the entire folder structure for AVCHD video, not just the folder containing the MTS files.) What camcorder are you using?

  • FCP 7 crashes when Log & Transfer MXF files

I just got a new MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio that includes FCP 7.
I just received footage from my DP shot on a Panasonic HVX200 on P2 Cards and saved as MXF files. I saved all files onto my MacBook with a backup on an external USB drive (another set was saved on a Firewire 800 drive).
    All footage was shot 720p/24fps.
I can view the files on the Log & Transfer preview window - but when I attempt to ingest via Log & Transfer, the transfer begins but suddenly stops (status is idle) and the red ! stop sign appears - obviously the file was not ingested. When I attempt to re-start the transfer or try with another file, FCP crashes.
My understanding is FCP 7 is able to accept native P2 format files (MXF) without transcoding - so it is very disappointing this is not working.
    Easy Setup settings are:
    Format: Panasonic DVCPRO HD
    Use: DVCPRO HD 720p/24
    Portion of error log:
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x00000000ffffffff
    Crashed Thread: 0
I would greatly appreciate any insight!

It doesn't transcode...it wraps the MXF files into a QT wrapper, joining audio and video. DVCPRO HD P2 mainly. AVCintra native support is here too, but you need to render to ProRes.
    BUT...that isn't the case here...try this:
in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

  • Setting Markers in Log & Transfer window

    Hi All
Anyone know a trick/plug-in that will enable me to set markers while I am setting my In's and Out's in the Log & Transfer Window before I 'Add Clip to Queue'? I would like to set markers indicating the interesting moments in the footage.
    cheers
    -j-

Only notes, no markers in log and transfer.

  • Playhead In Log & Transfer Viewer Doesn't Stay Where It's Put?

I've noticed this minor quirk that happens with AVCHD footage in the Log & Transfer window.
If I drag the playhead (in the L&T Viewer) and let go to set an In or Out point, the playhead jumps back slightly on most occasions making it impossible to choose the exact spot. On clips of around 20 seconds, the jump back on releasing the playhead varies between 2 frames and 12 frames. On very rare occasions it stays exactly where it is dropped.
    Is this a normal feature?
It's no problem but it is a bit odd.

Ah, the beauties of trying to edit media with interframe compression. It's a GOP structure. There really only are frames every 15 frames or so. Pick one, any one, try and get close. This is just one of the reasons it's good to get out of this garbage MPEG format.
FCP does it in HDV using a huge amount of processor power and the upshot is you spend forever conforming on the backend of your production or whenever you render.
Live with it. Pick a frame that's close. Don't try and edit in there.

  • Log & Transfer from Sanyo Xacti

I submitted this question to another topic, but I think it needs its own.
I have just bought a little Xacti HD2000, mainly as a research tool, but there are times when I want to include shots in a HDV project in FCP7. The Xacti offers a range of formats from "Full HR" (1920x1080 60fps) down to "TV-SHQ" (640x480 30 fps). It's my assumption that this format is (or is compatible with) AVCHD.
My aim is to ingest the footage using the Log & Transfer window and transcode it from "Full SHQ" (1920x1080 30fps) to ProRes 422 (set in the Preference Pane for AVCHD). However Log & Transfer doesn't appear to recognise the Xacti folder format, it tells me that it "contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."
Is there a way to fix this so it does recognise the folder or do I have to transcode each shot individually with Compressor?

OK, so I've now evaluated a few options including Streamclip, Visual Hub (still works) and Compressor 3.5 (part of the new FCS). I have always been a bit intimidated by Compressor, but after a few tutorials I've managed to sort my way through the labyrinthine interface and set up a Custom Template for converting my Xacti files to ProRes. Using a batch and a virtual cluster I've found it's really just as simple as Streamclip, has a lot more parameters and fits into my workflow quite well.
My original question was about how to ingest the AVCHD files using the the FCP "Log and Transfer" window, which doesn't work because it doesn't recognise the file structure of the SD card. I'd still like to try this our if anyone can suggest a way.

  • Lost Preview monitor in log & Transfer

    Hi,
I'm logging footage in Log & Transfer and have lost my preview monitor. All footage is there. Can anyone help?
    Jeff

    Hi -
Are you trying to import XDCam footage from a camera storage card? Log and Transfer is not the way to do it.
You need to use Sony's XDCam transfer software to import the footage.
Some of the clips show partial, because they are larger than the file size limit of the card, and the complete clip spans multiple individual files - if you use the Sony XDCam software, it will join the partial clips automatically.
    Unless I misunderstand what you are doing . . . .
