Log & Transfer or Log & Capture?

At College we're using Final Cut Pro 7, I've never used it before, I've only used Final Cut Express 4.
They're very similar, so there's little more to learn (I used FCE4 for a while, until I moved to Premiere Pro; I understand Final Cut decently well), but FCE4 didn't have the Log & Capture option of FCP7, so I was using Log & Transfer.
About 2 weeks ago we set up a folder for ourselves on the computers, there's only one MiniDV tape per group, so only one person was able to import the video. Our technician told us how to set it up, but told us to use Log & Capture. I'm not sure if the person importing it pressed a button by accident, but it ended up in 1 file. I want to know if Log & Transfer will seperate each take, or if there's a button to seperate each take using Log & Capture...there's no way the College is going to get me to edit with a single file!
I will ask my teacher about this next time, but for now I'd like to know why it was just one file and if Log & Transfer will seperate them. I don't have FCP7 with me (Nor FCE4 either) so I can't test it. I'll probably be doing it tomorrow.

Log and Capture is the tool to capture from TAPE.
Log and Transfer is the tool to capture from TAPELESS MEDIA, like P2, Compact Flash, SD cards.
Unless you log the tape first...break up the tape into chunks.  This is something Final Cut Express didn't do.  Final Cut Pro allows you to watch the tape, make in and out marks, make clips that you capture later.  So you only capture what you want, and you can break the tape up by scene and take, or by subject matter.  So you can log all the clips first, then Batch Capture.  Look this up in the manual, it's all laid out.
Now, why won't the college let you edit with a single file? That makes no sense.  YOu can also make SUBCLIPS of that single file.  Mark IN and OUT on the file, then Make Subclip (CMD-U).  name those what you want.  they will be individual clips, but they all point to the single file.

  • Log & transfer won't capture all of my clip

When using the Log & Transfer tool with P2 data, it seems to be chopping approximately 2-3 seconds off the end of each clip. Any thoughts? All of the data in the clip shows during playback within the log & transfer window, but when you add it to the Queue it seems to chop off the last 2-3 seconds. If I manually set in points and out points for the last 3 seconds it will bring in the correct data, so the information is there, it just won't bring in the whole clip if I do a simple add clip to queue.

If you have iTunes open and click on Library then at the bottom of the window it should tell you how big your library is.
Is that bigger than what will fit on your nano?

  • Using Log&Transfer with QuickTime files?

Has anyone tried this? Is it possible? I have been given a drive with .mts files converted to quicktime. The file names are utterly meaningless. Example: I have 30 QT's with duplicate names in different folders, from different shooting days. Obviously I need to relog everything, give it scene/take info. Wondering if I can use Log & Transfer to log the QT files?
The footage was shot 1080p, should I just bring in the .mts files thru log&transfer, ProRes?
Suggestions and guidance very much appreciated.

Thank you for your reply -
The .mov files are Apple ProRes 422(HQ).
As mentioned earlier I also have the original .mts files. Everything was shot AVCHD 1080p.
Short of slogging through thousands of incorrectly labeled .mov files I was thinking of just starting fresh with Log & Capture of the original .mts files.
One of the reasons I'm thinking of working with the .mts files and Log & Capture is that I can rename the clips while retaining the metadata of the original .mts files. My understanding is that this will preserve the link between the 'work print' and the camera original 'negative' so to speak. It will also afford me the easy ability to work in ProRes proxy and uprez later, tho I assume I can bring in the 'mov as proxy and do the same thing?
I've been known to be totally wrong and thus, I am here seeking wisdom.

  • Lost Log & Transfer information

    searched forums but didn't find:
Was logging clips in Log & Transfer from firewire drive. Had dragged many clips to queue to batch with the intention of actually importing them on another machine. I saved my project, and was hitting appleS every 5 clips or so. FCP quit unexpectedly (its never expected) and when I reopened the clips were gone. Tried restoring; no help. Tried two different auto-save projects; no help.
Again, hadn't done anything except log a lot of clips and place them in the queue. Can ANYONE help me recover them, or are they gone in the ether? BTW, have been on hold with Applecare for almost 1/2 an hour.
Should have done it on an Avid...
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks, David. I was hoping that comment would be taken in the spirit in which it was intended. Obviously, I'm using FCP for the right reasons. Just don't know it very well, yet. Hence my mistake:
I talked to a tech at apple care who told me that when using "Log & Transfer" (NOT Log & Capture) you do not record any of the metadata until you actually transfer the clips. In other words, you can't add a bunch of clips to the queue and come back later and transfer them. If you close FCP without running the transfer you lose all clip information that you've collected.
In this instance I was logging clips from a LaCie external drive loaded with P2 media, attached to the MacBook via firewire.
So the bottom line is that I wasn't using the software correctly, which is 99 times out of 100 the case with problems like these.
Appreciate the help, and pardon the sloppy posting, but I was trying to get my client back up and running. So, for future reference, I'll include it.

  • Configure log file transfer to downstream capture daabase!

    Dear all,
I am setting up bidirectional replication among 2 database server that are Linux based and oracle 11gR1 is the database.
I am following the document Oracle Streams Administrator Guide, Have completed all the pre-configuration tasks but I have confusion with this step where we have to configure log file transfer to downstream capture database.
I am unable to understand this from the documentation.
I mean how do I configure Oracle Net so that the source database can communicate with each other in bi-directional replication?
Configure authentication at both databases to support the transfer of redo data? How can I do this?
Third thing is the paramter setting that obviously i can do
Kindly help me through this step.
    Regards, Imran

    and what about this:
Configure authentication at both databases to support the transfer of redo data?
Thanks, ImranFor communication between the two databases, you create streams administrator at both the databases. The strmadmin talk to each other.

  • Log & Transfer Captures Every Other Clip

    Mac OS 10.6.7
    FCP 6.0.6
Trying to Log & Transfer AVCHD footage from a SDXC card.  When I batch "Add the Selection to Queue", the status bar goes through the process as if it was capturing all the clips.  However, only every other clip shows up in the FCP bin and on the Media Drive.
Would appreciate any help as in the middle of production and need to off load some video so I can reformat for more shooting.
I shot the footage on a Panasonic AG-AF100 (5).  Log and Transfer worked beautifully the first several imports.  Just noticed this yesterday for the first time.
    thanks,

Did you ever reprt this as a possible bug?
You should use the "Feedback" page : http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html
or better still, the Radar Bug reporting page (preferebale because it affords you some degree of feedback from Apple on the status of the bug investigaion, but you'll need to create free developer account to use the system) : https://bugreport.apple.com/

  • Log & Transfer of AVCHD fails to transfer - Write TimeCodeTrack Error -2008

    Hi,
I'm testing out my new Canon HF11 and copied the AVCHD directory for a test shot onto my hard drive, created a new project in FCE 4.01, created a Bin, set it to default capture bin, then started Log & Transfer.
When I select the AVCHD directory I see the two clips I recorded, and I can preview them in the L&T preview window. Dragging them to the Transfer Queue works, and I see the spinning disk to indicate it is being processed. After the progress bar reaches 100% the disk stops spinning, but there is nothing in the Bin.
When I click on the clip in the transfer window it changes to indicate there was an error.
Looking in the COnsole log shows:

  • Final Cut Express Log & Transfer Error No Data

Hello all, after hours pouring through the threads with similar questions, I have had no luck. I have been using FCE for nearly two years, and have never seen this error message "No Data"
Last night, I was in the middle of transferring clips from my Sony hdr xr520v using my MacBook Pro capturing on my external HD with over 200GB available. The transfer was going smoothly, but VERY slow - slower than I remember it ever taking. I thought I would be a bright one and switch from my Firewire port to my USB (I had been capturing via USB for about 6 months when my logic board fried and external drive was not visible via Firewire only USB) In any event, I'm boring you with the details so you can replicate the scenario. The transfer was working with Firewire but I switched back to USB illogical I know since Firewire is faster than USB, but I was going with prior 6months experience. When I connected the HD with the USB, all of a sudden I got the No Data error message. I promptly switched back to Firewire, but I am still getting the message! What have I done?
I checked my settings - Log & Transfer is set to AVHD Plug in and Plain Stereo. Both audio and video are checked, FCE is set to HDV- AIC 1080i50.
I can not log & transfer ANY clips into FCE (not even the ones already imported last night) I can, however import all into iMovie (which I know doesn't care about all the stuff FCE cares about but helped me eliminate the possibility of corrupt clips).
ANY help would be MUCH appreciated

I thought you had to use USB 2.0 to log and transfer AVCHD . . . . definitely not Firewire?
I suggest you trash the preferences as detailed in the link below and start again with the correct Easy Setup and using USB 2.0.

  • Log & Transfer Spanned Reel?

I'm trying to Log & transfer clips and I get a message on one clip that is 5 minutes in length that reads (Spanned) with Red caution sign. The footage was captured on one P2 card. I thought spanned meant when taping moves from 1 card to a 2nd card. Can anyone help me out on this. Do I have a corrupt file?
    Thanks!

Then use the cameras REPAIR function to repair the card. Then see what happens.
Might be an issue with the LASTCLIP.txt file, since this is what FCP references when it looks for spanned media.

  • Mac OS 10.5.5 or QT 7.5.5 breaks P2 ingestion w/log & transfer

    The title says it all.
I just upgraded a Mac Pro 2.8 dual quad-core with Mac OS 10.5.5 and QT 7.5.5. Everything worked spiffy before. Having been around the block several times, I performed all the usual routine maintenance stuff before the upgrade -- repairing permissions, etc.
Now, the machine will not ingest P2 media using the Log & Transfer function on FCS 6.0.4. I can still view, select, trim, rename -- but I can't ingest the clips. When one adds the selections to the queue, the program starts the process. The status window in the log & transfer function shows a spinning wheel as normal, but when the process is finished, the wheel freezes. An exclamation point then pops up. It's like the program has captured it, but then doesn't "build the file." FCS is not completing the process, in any case.
I wish Apple's left hand would tell the right one what it's doing!

We updated to 10.5.5 for security reasons and bugfixes, not so much because of a "compelling workflow change." In our opinion, 10.5 really wasn't ready at all for "prime time" when it was first released. Maybe we didn't have to upgrade to QT 7.5.5; but over the years we've found that QT upgrades tend to be more stable when system software point upgrades are done at the same time.
To answer your other question -- we don't tend to do complete HD backups, simply because they're a PITA. Sure, we've got the external drives to do it; we just don't have the time in many instances. I'm not saying we never do them.
Our digital video experience goes back to the Mac IIfx, the bad old days of Truevision Targa boards, and Premiere 1.0, so we tend to rely on our brains and our wits to get out of hardware and software issues. In this case, we still had the P2 clips, and if needed, could have ingested them on a different machine (fortunately we were not on a time-critical deadline). Call it hubris if you like, but our approach to troubleshooting works okay for us.
In our shop we have several machines to shoulder the work, and can afford to use one to test things before upgrading the lot of them. This was the case in this instance.

  • Does Log & Transfer exist in FCP 5??

This seems like such a noob question, but I've searched my manual and all my menus, as well as looking all over this forum, and I can't find "Log & Transfer" in FCP5. Log & Capture won't work with my Canon Vixia HF10. I got that.
I can import video clips into iMovie '08 and move them over, but that seems way high on the lameness scale, and in looking at the movie properties of the resultant .mov file, looks like I lose something in the import.
I would rather not shell out the bucks to go from FCP5 to FCP6, but if I must... sigh.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

You will need to upgrade for Log and Transfer. It is a new feature for FCS2 / FCP 6.xx

  • .MTS via Log & Transfer - ISSUES

I am creating a project from AVCHD files. I have imported some via L&T directly from different SD cards. Other .MTS files have been given to me as data archives (ie: no AVCHD file structure).
When I open the L&T window and try to transfer the [archived] .MTS files (now residing on one of my external drives), they are grayed out. I assume this is because the file structure that can be read by FCP L&T is not present as it was when I captured from the cards.
So what are my options? Is my only option converting these files with Toast or a similar program?
Your wisdom and suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!
    cheers!

    Hello,
I'm shooting with a new Panasonic HMC150 onto an SDHC Class 6 card. I'm having the same problem the above user is having even after copying the entire folder structure as it is shown on the SDHC card directly onto my hd. The Log&Transfer still won't read the .mts files. It reads through all the folders until i get to the stream folder containing the light grey .mts files which are un openable
I'm reading about this same problem from other users and can't seem to find any real explanation. Why do I have to buy toast when I'm supposed to be able to transcode to prorez 422 proxy from FCP7 log and transfer? I'm depressed and aggravated at this point and have resorted to heavy alcohol consumption. Any good advice will make me cry fermented tears of joy. Thanks.

  • Viewer window for Log & Transfer disappeared

    Hello from Bonnie.
I am capturing on P2 cards using the log & transfer.
My viewer window which lets me see the clip & trim it disappeared, & I cannot find it.
Does anyone know where this switch is.
    Thank you.
    Bonnie

    Hello Shane,
This is an old post but I tried to find the the FCP preferences in my library & there weren't any there.
    I am using FCP 6
Still can't get the trim/viewer window in my log and transfer from P2 Cards.
    Thanks for any info.
Also I am trying to render a 45 minute timeline that is a year old & had lots of 3D VFX. I keep getting General Error & it won't let me render.
I have had this problem over the years.
Even if I close all other tabs, I get this.
I really need to render this.
    Anyone know what to do?
    Cheers,

  • Log & Transfer of Canon HF 11: error message

    Hi guys,
I just got a new canon HF 11 (basically the same as the HF 10) and i tried to import footage using Log & Transfer but every time I click "add clip to queue" it spins a grey icon for a few seconds which then turns to a red circle with an exclamation mark inside and says "Error: No Data". I have tried giving the clip an in and out mark but this doesn't help.
    Any ideas,
    Thanks

I have had a similar problem with my Canon HG21 which has both hard disk and 32GB flash drive. My method is to copy files from the Hard Disk to the flash drive and then place the flash drive into a card reader. I was able to see FCE downloading in log and transfer for a second or two and then it went into an idle mode and never downloaded the file.
My solution was to delete ALL from from the flash drive followed by copying the videos and stills from the hard disk onto the clean flash drive. I realize you don't have the luxury of the hard disk, but perhaps you can extract the files using the Voltiac tool to clone the Canon structure from the camera and see if log and transfer will work directly from your hard disk on the Mac.
