Log & Transfer Prefs. P2 Plugin / P2 AVC-Intra Explanation please.

Can anyone explain what to choose.
I am importing AVCHD footage from my Sony HDR-SR12E camera
AVCHD - Apple ProRes 422
...but I don't understand this *"Log & Transfer Prefs. P2 Plugin / P2 AVC-Intra"*
What exactly is it and which *P2 AVC-Intra* should I choose? default "Native" or the same like I have chosen for "*AVCHD - Apple ProRes 422*"?

No, you should ignore anything in the AVCIntra section as you aren't shooting that format. AVCHD doesn't have a native editable format...you must convert to ProRes or AIC. AVCIntra does have a native format, but FCP doesn't support it (odd that they included it though).
But ignore AVCIntra...you aren't shooting it, so don't worry about what it does.

AVC-Intra help, please:-)

Please Help me.
I have big problems with AVC-Intra 100, when I select sequence AVC-Intra 720p 25p inside CS4 Premiere 4.2.1 and drag some clip onto the timeline it becomes red and all 4 sound tracks are completely empty of sound without any peak drew up. Then out of nowhere without any reason, some of it appears, some of the sound and then completely disappear again (randomly).
The video is also not playing without stuttering and without all frames intact (25frames/sec) more like 12frames/sec???
All this is the same when I try to render out a master, stuttering video and no sound.
When I look at the same files inside my HPX301 the files are playing just fine with perfect sound so it’s not the recorded files that are wrong.
System mode: 720-50p.
Rec Format: AVC-I 100 /25pn.
This computer is flying with big, big complex projects of 10 bits Cineform files so it’s not the computer that can’t handle it (this is with CS3 Premiere 3.2 on another disk thougt).
Now is CS5 better to handle the AVC-Intra codec then CS4?
My computer setup:
Processor: Intel i7920.
Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe V2.
Ram: Corsair 12GB 1600MHz.
C drive: Intel SSD G2 80GB with Windows Vista64 Ultimate.
Raid Card: Adaptec 3085.
Raid Disk: 4 x 1000GB in a raid 5 for video with Adaptec.
Graphic card: ATI/AMD 5870

I use "CS4 Premiere 4.2.1", so is there any solution on this in CS4 or is CS5 better to handle AVC-Intra????

AVC intra 100 in FCP

Tried to "log and transfer" a Panasonic HPX3000 P2/AVC-Intra 100/ 1080x1920 60i/24P file but Final Cut Studio 2(6.0) didn't read it What did I d wrong?? have the latest Macbook Pro intel computer, I have uploaded the Panasonic AVCintra Decoder in my mac succesfully.
I have i my Audio / Video setting chosen : Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 24P 48 Hz.
What am I missing??
Anybody know?

Do you have have FCP 6.0.2? The latest upgrade?
How about FX Factory by Noise Industries? Do you have that? I ran into an import issue with P2 DVCPRO HD and a version of those plugins. They have been updated to fix that issue.

Log & Transfer suddenly veeeerrrrryyyyy sllllloooowwww

Never had this problem before in 4 years of using FCP. Shooting on the panasonic AF-100. set all the log & transfer prefs to the lowest possible resolution and the problem persists. please help!

No, that is the strange part. I had been using log & transfer with this camera since January and it was behaving just like it used to with my old HVX200 - fast. then suddenly, last few weeks, it got super slow. FCP 6, yes. I feel like if it WAS working and suddenly STOPPED working, that something changed. but I am not aware of anything having changed.

I would love to have a DVCPRO HD to ProRes transcode option in the Log & Transfer prefs similar to the RedCode & AVCHD option. SInce I work with the AJA ioHD I like everything to be ProRes for speed.

But you do know that DVCPRO HD has a much LOWER data rate than ProRes, right? 720p24 is about 5MB/s, and 720p60 is 12MB/s. 1080i is about 12MB/s too. And ProRes is close to 16MB/s and HQ is about 25MB/s.
DVCPRO HD is a very speedy codec to edit with.

Using AVC Intra for Log & Transfer

Just checking,
Can you use the AVC Inra setting in Log & Transfer for XDCAM instead of AVCHD and if so what is the difference the two settings?

The reason I asked this question is I was told that when importing XDCAM ftg I should use the AVCHD setting in Log & Transfer . I just noticed the AVC-Intra setting and thought this was a new flavor of AVC and thought I might use this as well for my XDCAM import.

Final Cut Studio 2 and avc-intra

I am using Final Cut Studio 2 and am having trouble with .mxf files. I downloaded the avc-intra decoder drive from Panasonics site and a majority of the files ended 3/4 of the way through with sever audio noise at the end. I sent the drive back to the cameraman to see if he had better luck, turns out he did... Though I saw that he was using Final Cut Studio 3 and the quicktime files he provided back were formatted as AVC-Intra 100M...which is neither playable in quicktime or editable in Final Cut Studio 2.
What am I missing? Time to upgrade? What can I do in the meantime.

Well, you can't use the file he sent unless you upgrade. But if you get the card dumps back, you should be able to LOG AND TRANSFER to ProRes on your system fine. Or was that the issue? They had garbage at the end?
Trashing preferences fixes a lot of FCP oddities.

AVC-Intra to Prores- or not?

I have a project that was shot AVC-Intra.
Can I use the native codec or should I convert files to prores 422?

AVCIntra NATIVE is an option in Log and Transfer. The issue is that there are no AVCIntra sequence settings. You'd have to use ProRes...so why not encode to ProRes so there is no rendering while editing?
You cannot use Compressor on P2 media...you have to bring it in via Log and Transfer.

Apple avc-intra codec?

Hey there, I just got some quicktime .movs that will not open on my mac. The codec is Apple AVC-Intra. Final Cut wont recognize it, nor does quicktime. I'm running FCP 6.06 and Quicktime 10 on Snow Leopard. I've found a codec but only for older versions of FCP. I believe the footage was shot on an HVX300.
Usually when I get this codec, i think its from P2 cards, which log n transfer works with. But these are in quicktime movie form, like they have been transcoded already.

Sorry, that codec is only available with FCP 7. You will have to get the client to injest the footage as ProRes, or get the originals to you so that you can do the same.
I find it odd for people to choose that codec anyway, as FCP doesn't have sequence settings for that one...not even in FCP 7.

Im using a dual 2.5 GHz Power PC G5 8GB ram OSX 10.4.11 and FCP studio 2 w/all the latest

I get a WARNING " AVC-intra codec is unsuported on PPC" when I try to log and transfer
a avc 100 file from my 32GB P2 card .
I downloaded the codec from panasonic but its not working.

Avc-intra ingesting problem ou may be just confusion....

And when i import the content using log and transfer (final cut 7!!!) with avc-intra native plug-in, all that, to apple ProRes 422 hq compression the size of the video is like 14 mb/s is that right (and the video is full of color and complex)? and the quality doesn't look so good too, but this i fink is because of my computer.... AND THE INFORMATION OF THE VIDEO IN THE INFO WINDOW (more info part) IS SAYING:
DIMENDION 1920x1080 --> this is ok but....
CODEC: AI16, LINEAR PMC, TIMECODE ---> why not apple Pro Res 422 (hq) ???
COLOR PROFILE:HD (1-1-1) ---> This should't be 4-2-2 ?!?!?!?!?!

When you import AVCIntra into FCP 7, you have many MANY options. To see these options you need to go into the Log and Transfer preferences, located in the sprocket drop down menu. You can import as AVCI Native, or ProRes, ProRes HQ, ProRes LT, ProRes Proxy, Apple Intermediate Codec... Now when you say that the codec is AI16...that might be Apple Intermediate, not ProRes. Go back and make sure the preferences for that codec are set right.

It is because the video is HD and complex...yes. To get the footage to an EDITABLE format that FCP can decode and encode, you need to go ProRes, and yes, it can have a higher data rate than AVCI Native.

That is because computer monitors do not show you full quality. And FCP doesn't either. It lowers the resolution in order to play back all the frames. To see the full quality you need a capture device and a high quality monitor.

Unable to install AVC-Intra codec

I'm trying to play a file created on a Panasonic P2 camera using the new AVC-Intra codec. I downloaded Pro Apps Quicktime Codec from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1396. Specs say it requires OS X 10.5.6 or later and QT 7.6 or later.
I have a Mac running OSX 10.5.8 and QT 7.7 (1680.25). It is an old PowerPC G5, but everything about the system meets the published specs I've seen for running this codec. I haven't seen anywhere that an Intel Mac is required, which is the only "gotcha" I am able to imagine at this point.
ProAppsQTCodec will not install by clicking on the .pkg file, but in researching on the net, I saw that this was a common complaint and that using the program "Pacifist" to install was recommended. Installing the codecs via Pacifist did work, but the AVC-Intra .mov files in Quicktime Player play only audio with a black screen.
I went to the Genius Bar yesterday and the Tech tried several (to me) exotic methods of dealing with the problem, including a Network boot and manually re-installing the codecs. The result was the same, audio-only playback.
The files are good; they play back correctly on a more current Intel Mac system in both Final Cut Pro 7 and in Quicktime.
For what it's worth, I had originally intended to use these files on my 4-year old Intel Mac, but neither Final Cut Pro (version 6.0.6), the operating system (OSX 10.4.11) or Quicktime (7.6.4) which have served me well in every situation other than dealing with these P2 files, seem to be upgradeable at this point. :-(
I'm at a loss how to proceed on this and would appreciate any suggestions.

The calibrated{Q} AVC-Intra Decode allowed me to view the files in Quicktime, but as far as I was able to determine, not to use them in Final Cut Pro 6. We spent a morning at the 'Genius Bar' puzzling through things, but although the machine, the OS and the QT version all met the published spec for this software, and it looks like it *might* have worked, it would have involved some work-arounds. I finally decided to try to update the Intel machine instead.I was not able to do it on my own, but they were able to beat it into submission at the bar. After several hours on each of two additional days at the Apple Store, they were able to update the OS on my Intel Mac enough to allow me to install Panasonic's AVC-Intra codec. Apple's own ProAppsQTCodecs is supposed to allow these P2 files to play on this machine, but it didn't. I'm currently in the process of re-Log&Transfer-ing everything into FCP6 successfully.

HELP! AVC Intra 100

I received a hard drive with some Quicktimes that are in AVC-Intra 100 format.
So I went to the Panasonic site and downloaded the decoder.
But in QT player I only get audio, and in FCP Log and transfer I get "unsupported media or invalid directory structure"
I am running FCP 6.0.6, OSX 10.4.11, Intel 8 Core
From what I gather I have 2 choices:
-Bring the drive to a fully up to date suite, using FCP7 and convert all the clips to ProRes
-Get the P2 cards copied with their file structure intact to a drive, then do a Log and Transfer
Is there any other way I can deal with the videos?

If I recall correctly, the native AVCINTRA100 QT players only work within FCP, and cannot be played separately.
Not certain but that's what I thought.

AVC INTRA 100 INGESTED CLIPS SHOWING MYSTERIOUSLY LOW DATA RATES

Just finished my first P2 chroma key shoot using AVC Intra 100. I have ingested and transcoded using log and transfer using Pro Res 422 HQ (we shot 1080 25p) Each clip is showing a data rate of around 20mbps, yet the white paper on Pro Res suggests 200mbps data rates. Even the AVC intra files are showing data rates of around 20mbps-despite the 100mbps AVC Intra- IHow come the files are showing such low data rates? How come they are not reading 200mbps??? What did I do wrong or what am I not understanding about data rates??? Thanks

Using 8 cores in Log & Transfer

Is there any way to set up Final Cut Pro 6 to be using all 8 cores of a MacPro when doing Log & Transfer operations? I.e. R3D to ProRes or P2 MXF to Quicktime.
Last I checked L&T only distributed across 1 core -- Compressor was needed to use all 8. Has anything changed?

At the moment I'm converting a large amount of AVC-Intra footage from P2 cards to ProRes on a Mac Pro. FCP's current CPU usage hovers around 525% in the Activity Monitor. It's evenly split among the 8 cores. At the bottom of the window, I'm seeing 30% of the CPU idle. I didn't do anything special to set that up. I don't know how well FCP currently uses the CPUs on other L&T jobs.
