Logged off after no activity

It looks like I am being logged off after a period of inactivity. I have turned off energy savings and my screensaver, but I still appear to get logged off automatically after some time (I do not know how long, but it seems to be above 15 mins).
How to I make my system keep me logged in?

Hi
Have a look at System Preferences > Security > General. You may have the "Log out after xx minutes of inactivity" option enabled?
HTH?

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • L512 keeps logging off after inactivity in spite of settings

I'm running Windows 7 on my L512, and I run things in the background that I don't want to stop. (Seti@home, if you're interested.) I set the Power Manager to never log out under idle settings, and it worked for a couple of years, but recently it logs off after about 10-15 minutes (not sure exactly how long). I *think* there was a Windows update right before the problem started, but since there are *always* Windows updates that could be coincidence. What I want: on plugged in status, the computer should keep running until I shut the top or press-and-hold the off/on button. Can do? Thanks. Oh, and I'm something of a n00b when it comes to computers, so talk to me like I'm your grandma, who I probably resemble. :-)

Maybe this extension can prevent that if it happens when the computer is left unintended.

my HP proONe 400 keeps logging off after approx 2 minutes...Help!

    Hi,
If it's logging you out after 2 minutes of inactivity, here's one thing to check.
Right click on an empty area of the Desktop and select Personalize.  Click the Screen saver link in the bottom right.  In the following window you can adjust the time before the screensaver kicks in the  'Wait' dropdown menu and remove the tick from the box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen'.  Click Apply, then Ok to save the setting change.

  • Computer will log off after so many minutes of no usage

My MacBook Pro will log off or the log off confirmation window will log off after so many minutes of being away from my computer. This happens instead of my computer just going to the screen saver. Any way I can change this setting somehow!?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Continually logged off after 10.10.2 update

I just installed the 10.10.2 update and the Mac restarted. When I try to log on, the process looks normal but then I get logged off. I started in safe boot mode and the same thing happens. I cannot log onto and use my Mac. What can I do next?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

  • How do i force a guest account to Auto log off after being inactive for a period of time?

I have a 2010 21" iMac running OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8) in a hotel's guest lounge. I want to have it log off of the guest account after being inactive for 5 mins so that it clears the session info if the last person who used it did not log off when they were done (***this happens very often***).
I tried using the "System Preferences > Security> Log off when inactive for X minutes" option but this brings up the "Delete files and log off" dialogue which unless someone makes a selection just stays there and doesn't timeout, essentially stopping the logoff process.
How can i bypass that dialogue and force the system to log off the Guest User to avoid any issues with other guest seeing info from the previous user?

    Hi daniel,
I don't believe it's possible to do what you want, unless someone could write an Applescript for it. I suspect the best route for now is the old fashioned way, paper and marker, warning guests to log off or their info will be public.

  • ITunes will log off after setting visualizer

Hi there - I have the newest version of iTunes, and use it quite a bit. With the old version of iTunes I used to be able to set the visualizer and walk away from it and it would keep running through my playlists for hours at a time. Now, with the newest version I'll set it up as I always had, and it will only play a song or two before my screen saver kicks in and logs off of iTunes stopping the music - a real annoyance when I'm used to continuous music. Any suggestions? All of my setting haven't changed (security etc...)...
    Cheers

  • Computer logging off after quitting Pages

About one third of the time when I quit Pages, my computer screen goes blue and logs itself off as if I'd logged off and back on again.
Anyone else having this problem? It's making me crazy!
    Thanks in advance…

Try resetting the NVRAM. Directions here:

  • Why do some users get logged off after 5 minutes?

I havde a few users on one machine and they get logged off every 5 minutes. Is this a licensing thing?

Check System Preferences/Security & Privacy/General/Advanced to make sure a log out time hasn't been set up.

  • Automated Log Off - Windows 7/8

    What is your goal here?
There are a couple of different ways to go about this.
One way is, If you set up a policy for the windows 7 boxes to force log off after the user's hours expire (not using the right words here yet) and then update their AD settings so their login times are not between midnight and 1am. That will force the user to be logged out.
Another way is to create a user startup script that will wait in the background until a certain time of day. Once that TOD is reached the vbscript will launch the shutdown.exe /l command. This way the shutdown command is only run when a user is logged in.
Thirdly, create a scheduled task to run the shutdown /l as the current logged in user at 11:59p.

    Hi,
I'd like to be able to log all users out of their domain connected PCs every night around midnight.
I've tried creating a group policy to run shutdown.exe /l, however when the task runs it shows "The operation being requested was not performed because the user has not logged on to hte network".
Is there a easier way to log users that are a member of an Active Directory group off every night?
    Thanks

  • W510 Windows 7 (64) automatically Logs off

When my computer is not active, Windows 7 (64) automatically Logs off after 20min. It does not into hibernation, standby or powers down, but logs off to the log-in screen that requires me to log in again.
Like many others I have had power management problems out of the box with the W510.  Reinstalling the OS and returning to the original BIOS solved most of the problems but not this particular logging off issue. I am begining to think it could be the system board at this point.   Any recommendations?

    Hi GFABIANO,
when you did the OS reinstallation, was it a direct factory restore or a OS repair? Also is your image a default Lenovo image or your office image?

  • Is there a way to force other accounts to log off?

Hi, I see older posts on this but nothing new, and I was hoping maybe newer versions of Mac OS X have solved this.  I have a big family, and often my kids forget to log out of their accounts; eventually, the machine slows to a crawl for all the apps they collectively leave open.  Is there a way to automatically force accounts to log off after a certain amount of idle time, or a way for me to "bulk" log them off?  Restarting the machine or individually logging into each account is one way to do it, but it sure is inconvenient when all I want to do is hop on for five minutes to check email etc.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Another option is to set a idle-session timeout in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General > Advanced, but that will affect all users, including you.
