Logging Clips in Final Cut Express HD

i would like to log my video clips separately - without capturing - and put them in my browser for later video capture. in my old FCP3 version i could do this and just batch capture later. is this possible to do in FCExpress? it is very tedious to capture each clip individually rather than just batch capture. any assistance here would be greatly appreciated.
Dee

There is no logging function in FCE. You can either
do as Martin said capture large sections and break
them up after the fact, or capture individual clips.
ok. got it. i guess i should have asjed the university buy me FCPHD instead. at any rate, thank you gentlemen for your help.

  • Does anyone know why Log & Transfer in Final Cut Express is cutting clips short?

I am using Final Cut Express 4.0.1. For some reason, Log & Transfer in Final Cut Express is cutting short my clips. It's only a few seconds on each clip, and I've noticed it cuts off more the larger the clip is. However, I does not appear to cap my clip length or size, which means it is not due to some maximum size import setting.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated, as this is really frustrating!
    Thanks!

    Hi Cade,
SD card readers should work fine to Log and Transfer the footage in FCE, as long as the SD card stores the full file directory.

  • How to use You Tube clips in Final Cut Express?

I'm trying to use some You Tube clips in a Final Cut Express project - purely personal.
    What I'm doing is this:
    Play You Tube Video
Capture it as a Movie using ScreenSnapz Pro.
Saving it as a DV / NTSC quicktime movie - w/ 48 hz audio under Screensnapz options.
When I put it into the Final Cut Express timeline, it does not require rendering (I have loaded the DV/48hz sequence preset). But... the audio seems slower than it should be and the video is VERY much slower than it should be. The audio and video are not synched).
Other clips imported from other sources (such as video taken from a DVD using DVDxDV) is working fine.
    What am I missing here?

Don't use ScreenSnapz Pro, anything you get from that is not going to be as good quality as simply downloading it directly from the source.
    1. Use [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com/|click here to download] to get the file from YouTube using its "Open URL (Cmd-U)" function.
    2. Export to Quicktime (Cmd-E) using these settings:
    Compression: Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Quality: 100%
    Sound: Uncompressed Stereo 48kHz
Use a DV-NTSC sequence within FCE.

  • Cropping Single HDV Clips in Final Cut Express

    Hi,
I am using Final Cut Express to edit short HDV clips (max 6 sec) of microscopic biological specimens for web viewing. For my purposes I use HDV for a higher resolution but I would still like to change the frame size (width and height) of my clips in the Canvas before exporting. In order to remove unnecessary background to reduce file size and retain a high quality clip. In older versions of FC (Pro 2 or 3) you could go to Sequence Settings and change the frame size by changing the apect ratio to custom but FCE doesn't have this option. I need to know if it is possible to do this in FCE before exporting so I can adjust my frame size multiple times if necessary.

FCE is not a resolution independent application. It is resolution specific HDV or DV. You can also crop for final output on export with an application that has a cropping function.

  • Applying video filters to multiple clips in Final Cut Express HD

Is there a way to select multiple video clips and add a video filter to all of them? Example: we have a movie that was recorded in 2 different widescreen aspects ratios. Can I change them to the same aspect ratio easily?

I can't say for FCE, you may want to post in that forum. But in FCP, the method for applying filter(s) to multiple clips is to apply the filter to one clip then make the needed adjustments on the filter(s) in that clip. Next, right-click on that clip and select "Copy" from the contextual menu. Next, select all of the other clips to which you want to apply the same filter(s) and settings. Right-click on one of them and choose "Paste Attributes" from the contextual menu. When the Attributes window opens, choose Filters, then click OK.
To apply the same filter to several clips (without settings) at the same time, select the clips in the Timeline, then drag the filter(s) from the Browser to the clips.

  • Rendering imported iMovie clips in Final Cut Express

I'm learning FCExpress with a previous iMovie project as my footage. The clips/edited sequences dragged/dropped to the browser from an iMovie need to be rendered, but when I click "render all" a menu appears with a list of checkmarked and uncheckmarked options that I cannot find explained in either the Help window or the hardcopy manual. Maybe there somewhere, but haven't found it. Is it detailed somewhere? Or can you briefly explain the menu options and what the checks mean? Thanks. This has gotta be a dumb question, but I'm stuck there.

    Dear Tom,
I did the exact thing of importing iMovie Clips to FCE HD and I had to render the clips before I could add any effects to them.
    1) I did this because I had problem with capturing clips from my DV camera using FCE. I had error message like "bad source tape". Any advice for this?
    2) After importing and rendered from iMovie, FCE HD could not work Real time with my rendered clips. Every transition or video effects had to be rendered. Shucks, I'm perplexed.

  • Canon AVCHD to final cut express on macbook. Help.

I just bought a CANON Vixia HE R20 AVCHD camera. I used log and transfer to get the clip onto final cut express 4. But when I add the selection to the queue, an icon comes up under status that says: error: no data. What do I do??

The files have not been converted, they were taken straight off the camera.
And I'm not really sure what you mean by media specifications, because I don't know much about the camera I'm using.
    No, I only have 4.0

  • SH inputting on Panasonic GH1 into Final Cut Express

    Hi
I have just bought a Panasonic GH1 and I am struggling to import (Log and Transfer) clips which have been filmed in "SH" mode, which is 720p format (50fps). The clips are AVCHD. When I film in "FHD" mode, which is 1080p it imports these fine, with no issue at all?
I have altered the setting in the Easy Set up menu, but every time I try and drag the clips in, Final Cut Express crashes?
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?
Any direction or support is much appreciated.
    Many thanks, Martin

    FCE4 does not support 720/50p, only 25/30p ..
according to Panas press release your device offers 1080 as 50i/60i not p ...
    FCE4 supports 1080/50/60/i

  • Importing Files into Final Cut Express

I have a technical issue that I hope someone can assist me with...
I recieved 2 harddrives full of video clips that were shot in HD from a video production house. Here is the content on the drives: CARD 1 (folder), inside this folder there are 2 items (CONTENTS & LASTCLIP.txt) in the CONTENT folder are the following folders : AUDIO, CLIP, ICON, PROXY, VIDEO, and VOICE.
My question/dilemma: Can I import these clips into Final Cut Express to edit? I have an older version of Final Cut HD that won't work with these files.
Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

HELP ! Anybody, please help !
As you can probably guess. I've reached the limit of my "expertise" with your files ....... ".XML" sounds familiar but you will have to hang around for someone else to tell you whether and how they can be used.
One thing I am sure about (I think!) is that the latest version of FCE will be no better than the older one you have.

  • New 27" iMac with  Final Cut Express 4

    Hi there,
Wow, the new iMac has just came put ...
I am getting tired that my macbook pro (2.53 GHz i5 core with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 256M) takes so long to render the HD clips in Final Cut Express 4:
Can I know between these two:
    _*(1) 27-inch: 3.2GHz DUAL CORE*_
    3.2GHz Intel Core i3
    2560-by-1440 resolution
ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 512MB
    and
    *_(2) 27-inch: QUAD CORE 2.8GHz_*
    2.8 Intel Core i5
    2560-by-1440 resolution
ATI Radeon HD 5750 with 1GB
which one is faster to render the files in FCE4 ? Will there be much difference between the two ?
Btw, has Apple solve the problem with their 27" iMac ? I heard that they have some issue for the previous 27" iMac, has that been solved ?
    Thanks

I haven't received my i7 iMac yet and don't use FCE, so I can't tell you my experience in that regard. However, you can look at some benchmarks of the October 2009 i5 and i7 iMacs (which are the same as the i5/i7 found in the currents iMacs, only a tad slower - 2.66/2.8 GHz vs. 2.8/2.93 GHz):
    http://www.barefeats.com/imi7.html
As you can see, the quad-core machines are much faster than their dual-core counterparts in Compressor, and even more so in After Effects (also, the i7 provides a noticeable speed boost over the i5 - 15-20% faster despite a 5% higher clock speed only, presumably thanks to Hyper Threading).
I don't know whether FCE is as well threaded as Compressor (you could ask in the FCE forum - which I just realize you did) but if it is, a quad-core processor will be a great advantage, and the i7 option could be worth the extra price.

  • Final Cut Express Log and Transfer files not playing audio on another mac

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro for video editing for work, and am having some issues with it. Previously i was working on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.11, on Final Cut Express 4.
I used Log & Transfer to get the AVCHD videos from my Canon HF 11 onto my mac, and had no issues. Where my problems started was when I moved my video files to my new Mac Pro running OS 10.5.6. Now when I open those video files in either Quicktime or FCE, the VIDEO plays but _not the audio_. I thought maybe the video files were bad, but when I tried the original files on the new Mac, they still didn't work. I don't know if there's some codec that isn't on the new mac or if there's some other problem... I just know that my new amazing machine cannot play the files that my 3 year old one can. I'm not new to computers, but I'm not an Apple guru. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I can try trashing the files, but I can't log and transfer the files again, as it's months of footage that aren't on the camera anymore. But i did find something else out. The files that were recorded with the camera's built-in mic recording is fine and with sound, but the files that I used my wireless mic setup had no sound. I don't know why that is, because they worked fine on the MacBook Pro. I tried log and transferring a new clip on the Mac Pro wit;h footage using the wireless mic, and still no sound.

I am using final cut express 4. It seems that any clip over a certain length, say 5 min, does not fully transfer! All shorter clips are perfectly fine. Is there some reason why longer clips are not fully transferred? (a half blue circle shows up on the transfer list, indicating that the clip was not fully transferred. When I check in the capture scratch folder, sure enough the whole clip is not there!
Is there some glitch in final cut express that only allows short clips to be transferred in full?

Thanks for the reply. I'll try to answer all the questions (I am a relative novice). Your help is appreciated.
By the way, the other reply I received suggested the following:
In Final Cut Express>System Settings>Scratch Discs make sure the Limit Capture/Export File Segement Size To: is not checked.
I did this and it was already unchecked. So this is not the answer...
The strange thing is, I have been logging and transferring with FCE for 2 yrs without any problems at all with shorter clips, but have come up against the problem with long clips (over 5 or so min)  the whole time. I got around it by simply making sure I stopped recording after less than 5 min while shooting footage. OR if I accidentally got a long clip, I import into imovie and then import into FCE. Not very streamline and I worry about compressions altering quality!
I am now trying to import a 20 min and a 17 min clip and it only transfers around 3 minutes of each, I have re-tried several times and it happens repeatedly. The blue circle in the transfer list shows up as a half blue circle instead of full. Clip cuts off after 3 or so minutes.

  • Why does Final Cut Express 4 quit automatically when I open Log and Transfer window?

I'm using a Sony NXCAM and I am editing on a Mac OS X. The clips I have recorded are in MTS format so I understand I must use the Log and Transfer setting to import my clips. I plug the camera into my computer, go into Final Cut Express 4, turn the camera on, and then go into the Log and Transfer window. Once I open that, Final Cut quits and an error message pops up that reads, "Final Cut Express quit unexpectedly." Final Cut quits too fast for me to even click on anything in the Log and Transfer window. I really don't understand why it does this. The only thing I can think of why Final Cut is quitting is because I have over 100 clips on the camera, so maybe that is too much for Final Cut Express 4 to handle. However, I wouldn't think that would be the case. If anyone knows of anything I could do to fix this problem, then please send me a reply. I've looked around the internet to see if anyone else has had this problem, but I haven't found anything. Thank you, any responses will be greatly appreciated!

Shooted videos directly saved to the SD memory card is no problem, the log and transfer window immediately recognizes the sd card and I was able to convert the videos. I will check later today if this were 25p, 50i or 50p footages.
Strangely enough is that transferring the .mts files from the internal memory to the sd card (using the Mac finder, I don't know if it is possible within the camera itself) won’t help, the log and transfer window doesn't the recognizes the transferred files, strange!
I hope that this problem will not occur using Final Cut Pro X, which I will start using soon.
I'm curious what the exact problem will be.

  • Made a 2 minute edit on Final Cut Express but at the 30 seconds (after I exported), there's a clip showing up that is not in my project, a clip i don't want in there, a glitch, how can I correct this problem? I don't want to start over again :(

    Basically, I have 2 problems:
    1) When I export it shows this clip that's not in my normal project and it ruins my project by having this clip in there; it's like a glitch. I tried to change the clip, and and still doesn't make the project normal again. Tried a new sequence and dragging the project into HD Mode and to no avail.
    My camera:
    HD: 1080p
    Settings: At Hd
    2)
Also, it's only displaying black bars above my project, even after exporting at 720p. I just don't want this random clip in my project or the black bars. I'm using Final Cut Express. Does anyone have any possible idea what this could be? Any help woud be much appreciated! I'm clueless on this.
IS ANYBODY OUT THERE?  : )

    1) Is it a video clip? Something you recognize?  To be clear, it's displaying at a point in your exported movie but doesn't appear at all in the sequence?
    2) What are your sequence settings?  Right-click your sequence and choose "Item Properties" to verify.

  • My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created with a older mac os x (lion) and converted them to import into fce. after doing this as well as putting clips on the fce timeline when playing back t.h

My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project.  After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline.  When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
    1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
    2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio.  I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce,  it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio.  Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline.  I've never experienced this before.  Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly?  If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.
