Logging clips with DV converter set in easy setup

Quick question on using DV converter to capture clips from VCR device with no time code to Final Cut Express 4. When I set the quick set up to DV converter option, I can capture, but I have no control of the logging options in the capture window (i.e. can not change bin name, reel name etc.). As a result clips as all captured as unknown1, unkown2, etc.
Is there a work around to save clips with a different name?

Yes I cannot change the reel name before or during capture. Yes I can also change the names after in the bin file but it is not easy when there are 50 to 100 clips.

DVD capturing - What setting on Easy Setup?

Hello,
I'm caputuring video from my DVD player which is : connected RCA to a Canopus converter box : out firewire and into the Macbook.
When I capture the video, I get the message saying "Audio/Video rate may not match sample..." after I'm finished capturing.
I have no idea which setting in Easy Setup to choose from.
It is currently set at: DV - NTSC 32 kHz
Any suggestions?

If you are capturing via a box like the Canopus ADVC-110 (any model, actually), you should use the DV NTSC DV Converter easy setup. (Assuming you're in the US, that is.) Select this easy setup BEFORE you create a new sequence and/or try to capture anything from the Canopus. Also make sure that the Canopus box itself is set for NTSC, not PAL.
You should NOT use the DV NTSC 32KHz easy setup.

Exported clip with alpha - no setting produces composited output

1. launch Motion v3
2. choose any resolution / media preset
3. put some scrolling text into a layer
4. export the clip out as H.264, 8bit color, +alpha (this info from Motion itself)
5. import the clip into FCP v 6
6. bring into any simple slideshow, composite text over slides
7. render - no compositing
8. cmd-9 change alpha properties to any of the other three (default is to none) = still no compositing

H.264 does NOT allow for alpha channel on export. You need to select a codec capable of embedding the alpha channel.
You should not be editing H.264 in FCP anyway. It's a web delivery codec, not an editing one.
your easiest solution is to import the Motion project file into FCP and add it to your sequence like a clip. Transparency will be observed without any exporting necessary.
In addition, you can open the clip in editor to make changes to the Motion project which will be updated in FCP as soon as you save.

Jerky capture with DV converter

I'm using a Canopus 55 to convert VHS-C tapes, which look fine on the TV monitor. I have a Macbook Pro connected to an external drive using Firewire 800 which daisy chains to the Canopus using Firewire 400. The Canopus connects to the video recorder using SCART.
I have DV-PAL DV Converter selected in easy Setup.
The capture is jerky - it runs OK for a few seconds then it'll shimmer or the frame will slip upwards. It's unusable.
Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

First, check the DIP switch settings on the ADVC-55. For PAL video, SW 1 and 2 should be ON, SW 3-6 should be OFF. NOTEs: Only change the DIP switch settings when the ADVC is disconnected from power. Power is normally supplied by the FireWire cable (unless you bought the optional power supply.) The Mac's Firewire bus is powered even when your Mac is shut down, so you should disconnect your Mac from power before connecting or disconnecting your ADVC from your Mac.
Second, "shimmer" and "frame slips upwards" are usually caused by a signal problem from the tape or deck; or an old or bad tape. Check all your cables & connections. Check your tape. Check the SCART adapter too. If you are using the S-video out, try the Composite out; or vice-versa.
Third, capture 5 or 10 minutes of video. Then open the video in the FCE viewer and play it. If it plays fine there, your video is ok. The video in the Capture Window during capture is not always completely smooth - that's normal.

Any way to re-capture logged clips to anamorphic setting?

Hello-
I have an FCP project with containing clips with a 16:9 aspect ratio captured with 4:3 aspect ratio setting. I'd like to recapture all of the logged clips using the anamorphic capture setting. However, all the capture information is embedded in the clips, so, even if I set the capture preference to anamorphic, the clips still come through as 4:3 when I attempt to re-batch capture.
Is there anyway to globally change the capture setting to anamorphic with clips that have already been captured at 4:3?

If you are talking about DV, there is absolutely no need to recapture. The difference between 4:3 and 16:9 DV is really in how FCP interpretes the pixels- they are both 720x480.
Go to the Browser and you can add a check mark in the ANAMORPHIC column. Voila, you now have anamorphic clips without recapturing.

edit: I'm slow slow slow. To elaborate on what Tallguy said, if you need to fix the aspect ratio of the clips you've already placed in a 16:9 timeline, select all the clips in the timeline, right (control) click and from the popup menu select: Remove Attributes>Video Attributes>Distort.

Have you tried your spam folder? it could have gone there by default. also, are you sure you put the correct email in for iCloud?

FCP7 HELP - Exported quicktime mov plays differently than what I edited on the timeline. The playback shows the clips with ins and outs that are different than what I set in the clips when I edited - some are too early and the clips don't playback

Please help ASAP.

Processor 2.4GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 -- Everything is edited, sourced, and stored on an 2TB external hard drive to make things go faster.
Editing with FCP 7
When I export the sequence I edited with quicktime, the playback video is very different from what I edited on the timeline. The playback has the clips with ins and outs that are way off than what I cut, and some of the clips don't show at all or have changed transitions. However when I play in the timeline in FCP, the sequence is fine, just the way I cut it.
The source of the clips was one long .mov that I cut into clips for the timeline. Everything has gone smoothly but the exported .mov is just so different.
How can I get the time codes of the clips to be the same in the exported .movs? I just want the quicktime .mov to represent my edit exactly.
This video is due tomorrow - if the solution is too time consuming, can I play within the FCP player window and Log and Capture?

What is your source material? Is it H.264? FCP does not work correctly with that material.
Click on a source clip in the FCP Browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties, or take a screen shot of the item properties, and post that here.
Next, click anywhere in your timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see your Sequence Settings. Either report those Sequence Settings, or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings and post that here.

You need to install Java for your Mac OS version, and/or make sure it's enabled in the Java Preferences application and your browser's preferences.

You need to set the option to create a mobile account using the Directory Utility app.

I have converted m2ts files to .mov to edit in FCE (4.0.1) When I drag the clips into the timeline they need rendering, as much as a minute for a 30 sec. clip. Is this normal? I am using OS 10 . My easy setup is apple intermediate codec, 720p30. Any help

To what codec, frame size & frame rate did you convert the files in Streamclip?
If it isn't AIC 720p30, you'll need to render.

I live in an apartment complex and the router is in my roommates room. ANY suggestions? I'm at the point where I may return this because it has been nothing but a hassle. I'm very annoyed and just want the product that I paid for to actually work.
The ABOUT section says Network Time: Skipped (reachable) and Activation: Failed (skipped)
I'm also using my MacBook Pro as the homesharing with iTunes up to date.

I had a similar issue wuth my new Apple TV. If you (or your roommate) are able to change the router firewall settings, do that first. I don't know the ports that you need, except that 123 is one of them (to set the time). Then restart the Apple TV. See if that will get you through the activation process. I actually ended up restoring mine to factory settings, but I'm not sure if that step was really necessary.
I understand your frustration, though. Getting the Apple TV to work was such a pain -- it almost feels like it is not really an Apple product.

FCP 7.0.3 Easy Setup audio setting issues

I have created two custom Easy Setups.
SD:     DVCPro50 PAL with audio set @ 48.000 kHz, 16-bit, 16 chan
HD:     DVCProHD 1080i 25fps with audio set @ 48.000kHz, 24-bit, 16 chan
I open FCP, load the SD easy setup. I then click on Audio/Video settings.
Select "Audio/Video Settings" and view "Capture Presets Summary"
     - Audio format is listed as 48.000 kHz 16-bit 16-chan
Select"Edit" and "Capture Preset Editor" comes up.
     - UnderQuicktime Audio Settings:
          - Device: AJA Kona 3
          - Format: 48.000 kHz 16-bit 16-chan
If I then select the HD Easy Setup, and then "Audio/Video Settings"
Select"Edit" and "Capture Preset Editor" comes up.
     - UnderQuicktime Audio Settings:
          - Device: AJA Kona 3
          - Format: 48.000 kHz 16-bit 16-chan (THIS SHOULD BE 24-bit)
Select the "A\V Device" tab:
The audio device has defaulted to the 16 bit setting as well.
It appears that FCP or AJA is keeping the audio bitrate from the previous Easy Setup.
Even if we close FCP completely, and reopen into a new project, load the HD Easy Setup, the bit rate still shows as 16.
I have tried deleting the following:
apple.finalcutpro.plist

The camera definitely recorded in SP, that icon was visible on the viewfinder...
What settings should i be using in FCP to capture the video? From attempted research i found most comments suggesting to use a basic Firewire settings. i have used this in PAL format but the results are poor.
One thing I am confused about is the 32khz or 48khz settings. Which should i be using? I have an older version of FCE 4 where there are many settings for both 32khz and 48khz for DV FireWire but in FCP7 there are only options for 48khz.
Any advice would be welcomed at the moment.
I am also willing to upload clips of what I have to demonstrate visually the poor quality video I am capturing from the Canon

Digitizing Pre-Logged Clips: Drop Frame/Non-Drop Frame Discrepency

I have about 100hrs of DV NTSC footage that has been logged and now I need to capture it.
Everything seemed good to go:
• I ctrl+click the clip intended to capture
• Select 'batch capture' (it initializes)
• Settings are (apple setting) DV NTSC 48kHz
• I click okay and I get an error message that reads:
"WARNING: You are about to capture drop-frame media to a non-drop frame clip. If you proceed, you may experience changes in logged in and out points, problems relinking media, or removal of master clip relationships."
Now, the setting noted above is set at 29.97 not 30.
I tried to see if there was anything I could select/deselect in the logged clips and came up dry.
I made duplicated the apple setting and changed the fps to 30. This yielded no error message but did on the second clip I tried.
Does anyone have any idea on how I should be troubleshooting this?
Due to the high volume of footage, and workflow schedule, I'd really rather not screw this up.
I turn to you my faithful FCP gurus.

p.s. I'm running FCP v.5.1.4

Just check your timecode accuracy before you get any further... i.e. does the timecode in the captured clip match the code that's on the tape. If so, you're good to go on... if not, I'd recapture using the proper TC... it's pretty easy if you do it from the tape in the Log and Capture window.
