[SOLVED] Kernel panic for an unknown reason
[Solved] Steps done to solve it:
0. Panic because I couldn't play starcraft2 (this step is sooo important! ;)
1. Updated my mirrorlist.
2. Forced a refresh on the package list from the new mirrorlist. "pacman -Syy"
3. Downgraded the kernel.
4. Deleted the latest kernel package from the pacman cache.
5. Updated the system. (pacman -Syu)
6. Thanked lilsirecho for helping out!
7. Profit
Hi all
I just did a "pacman -Syu" this afternoon and after that I'm getting kernel panics for unknown reasons.
edit: I had kernel 3.0.4 befure syu and I have kernel 3.0.7 now. I tried downgrading wine and the kernel with no success.
It first happened when I tried to run StarCraft2 with wine. I even created a post looking for help because of that.
Later on I tested another game, just in case, and it crashed too.
Looks like a wine problem, right? Or even a graphics driver problem.
That's what I thought too. But then I tried to update with "yaourt -Syu --aur" and in the first package compression it freezed once again. And it does fail everytime I try to update with yaourt during the compression phase.
What do this situations have in common?
My opinion is that they all require a lot of resources. StarCraft 2 puts my PC at 100% almost all the time. The other game is pretty old, but it freezed during an "environment loading" phase, right when the map was loading. The compression phase of yaourt also consumes a lot of resources.
This is my view of this problem, but I could be completely wrong.
What I need is help finding what is the real source of this kernel panics. I don't know where to look for the logs or the error reports when a kernel panic occurs.
I hope someone can help me trace the problem somehow. I think I'm lost
ty in advance.
cheers!

Possibly caused by a mirror download.
Perhaps you need to revert kernel and insure you have the latest mirrorlist and then syu again.
When I saw your response I thought: "Why should that be true? I downgraded the kernel with no success. Doesn't make much sense".
But then I did what you said:
Downgraded the kernel back to 3.0.4.
Moved the latest mirrorlist.pacnew I had to be the mirrorlist in use.
Then did a "pacman -Syyu".
And, miraculously, it works fine now.
How in the world did you know that could be the reason? It would have been the last possibility I would have thought about, no doubt about that
Thank you very much lilsirecho. Your post really helped me.
Not gonna mark this as SOLVED yet. Yesterday I marked my other thread as solved too soon and I regretted my decision.
I will leave a 1week time-frame to be 100% sure that it is fixed, just in case. -
The enic driver version 2.1.1.41 which comes with driver iso ucs-bxxx-drivers.2.1.1a is resulting in Kernel panic for RHEL5.7
When RHEL5.7 OS is installed, the kernel version that gets loaded with the iso that I have is 2.6.18-274.el5 x86_64 whereas the kernel version expected by the enic driver provided by Cisco is 2.6.18-164.el5(supported distribution). The Cisco documentation says : If kernel version does not match, the enic RPM cannot be installed.
The enic driver that comes with OS is ver 2.1.1.9 whereas the one Cisco provides is ver 2.1.1.41 . The system crashes for non-matching distribution after loading the driver version 2.1.1.41 .Here are some other details:
root@rhel57 cisco]# rpm -ivh kmod-enic-rhel5u7-2.1.1.41-1.0.x86_64.rpm

Recurring kernel panics for the past 6 months - help!
HI all,
So I purchased a non-manufacturer refurbished mid-2010 MBP about 6 months ago. It came with a 1TB hybrid SS/SATA drive and way more software than I will ever use(i.e. entire Adobe suite) but basically since I got it it's been restarting intermittently; black screen, restart, "your computer restarted because of a problem." It seems to particularly hate switching between apps (especially with Mission Control) and occasionally when composing a new email in Mail. I ignored this for long time because I was a new Mac user but it is pretty **** irritating not being able to switch between apps easily or compose an email without restarting. It also gets ridiculously hot so I have temperature and fan control app installed that works pretty well; the hottest I've ever seen it is 92 degrees and the trackpad stopped working, but was fine after an hour or so of being switched off (I'm not sure how relevant this is, but additional information can't hurt right?)
I check for updates daily; I've reinstalled from Time Machine and the problem is still there, and it carried over from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. I've seen some people recommending deleting drivers but I'm reluctant to interfere with stuff I don't understand for fear of breaking it completely. At this stage I genuinely cannot afford to get it fixed - I'm afraid that any Genius recommendations are going to be pricey and/or ineffective, so I'm open to suggestions. Here is the most recent kernel panic log;

As a student I'm relying on my Mac for absolutely everything. If this can't be fixed then I'd like to know if it's going to get any worse, but if anyone could help me decipher the log and/or suggest a fix then I would be eternally grateful! Two possibilities, the RAM needs replacing, with high quality RAM*:
http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
The GPU needs replacing, which means a logicboard replacement (expensive).
This is the risk you take with a non-Apple refurbished. And unless you purchased it in 2011, it is unlikely you have any warranty, unless you purchased with a credit card a card that extends the warranty. -
Kernel Panics for months now!
Before we get started, don't tell me to zap PRAM, do a permissions repair or a hardware test, I've done them all. I did replace a failing drive a while ago that was giving me trouble. Since I replaced it, the panics have been less frequent. I even re-installed my OS, which also helped a bit, but it still happens. The hardware test showed that all my hardware was fine, which I don't actually believe. It seems to me that the CPU or GPU are at fault, but if the GPU were at fault, I figure it would only occur when it was in use. I'm hoping it's a software issue. I'm a video editor and this happening is totally unacceptable. I'm clearly not the only person it has happened to either. I am frustrated beyond belief and refuse to have my computer shipped in to have repairs done as it is the source of my living. Even if a kernel panic occurs once in a while, I can still use it for work. It's a 2010 i7 MBP with a hi res screen. It's running 10.8, but I experienced this with 10.7 as well. Also the panics occur more frequently when the computer isn't plugged in, even at full charge.

I had the same thing happening to my MacBookPro6,2. Search here or elsewhere for "NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100" and find that you and I are not the only ones.
KPs can happen for a number of reasons. I'm not saying I can read all the logs, haha, but the one you posted here I can read very well... -
Kernel Panics for 2010 MacBook Pro 15" can anyone help?
This has been going on for a while now after the hard drive was originally replaced back in the summer. Tried fixing it myself, however no luck and it keeps coming back. Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks

You have got a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, and your log is showing that the NVIDIA GPU is damaged.
Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro have got a damaged NVIDIA GPU that may cause unexpected restarts, kernel panics, black screens... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Apple is repairing all of these MacBooks Pro for free if they were purchased less than 3 years ago, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. Also, print the log and take it with you -
Kernel Panic for a powerbook driver, but i have an ibook...
I was having trouble with my Finder in 10.2.8 so I was told to get a 10.3 disc to do the Archive and Install feature. I got a hold of the discs and went to do the install and a Kernel Panic popped up. Here's a copy of it:
Panic(cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: “Powerbook2,1”.

I went to Dr. Smoke's website and figured out that it's a problem with the System folder. My questions are: a) does this have anything to do with my finder problem in 10.2.8? and b) why does the powerbook divers matter if I have an ibook clamshell?Mike--
Sounds to me like you got hold of 10.3 discs for a specific PowerBook, not the a universal installer, or the 10.3 discs for your particular iBook.
As a general rule here's how it goes: you can't use the installation/restore discs that came with a particular Macintosh with another model Macintosh. It doesn't have all the drivers. For example, a PowerBooks' disc would have different drivers for fans, etc., than would the disc for an iMac G5. However, if you can find Panther retail discs, then you'd be fine, as the retail versions would have the proper drivers for all compatible Macintoshes that were released before it.
As to why it says "Powerbook2,1", at that low of a level, the kernel sees portables as Powerbooks. They use the same logic more or less on the desktop Macs, where the iMacs and Power Macs are both "PowerMacN,N" with the Ns distinguishing between models. The Rev. A iMac G5 is PowerMac8,1.
This isn't necessarily so, by the way, for the Intel Macs, where so far the strings are a bit more specific...

Kernel panic for unknown reason on internet
My computer has been freezing and flashing a kernel panic every few days. I can't seem to find a common factor. Sometimes its when I'm checking my email. Othertimes, I'm surfing the internet on Safari. Once it did it when I was trying to send a report back to apple support about the problem. It always has the same report:
panic(cpu 1 caller 0x001A49CB): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 1, Type 14=page fault), registers:

Analyze kernel panic for me?
I'm running 10.4.11 on my Powerbook G4 15"
I haven't installed any hardware lately. I've tried trashing the finder prefs. I've started up from install disc to use disk utilities. Didn't help.
Weeks ago at some point my mac would no longer shut down normally and had to hold down the on/off button to get it to shut down. When it starts up it reports a kernel panic. here are the details.

Do you have the original discs that came with the machine? If so, pop in Disc 1, reboot with the D key held down and run the Apple Hardware Test that will pop up. Let us know what that finds.
Does the unit kernel panic often? Does it boot at all? Some more details may be helpful to rule out some things. -
Can anyone decode a kernel panic for me?
Hello all,
Below is a kernel panic I have been having on trying to boot from a Panther install (Full Retail) on my imac 15" flat panel, 256MB,currently running 10.1.5 on a clean install. Would be very grateful for any clues. My AHT comes up clean, but this is not a well pooter (applications often quit 'unexpectedly'). My nearest Apple repair person is 40 miles away and I don't drive, so I'm trying to exhaust all possibilties first!

panic: we are hanging here
Very grateful to anyone who might be able to decipher it.You may also be having a problem with a badly corrupted hard drive. I would recommend you reformat the hard drive before installing OS X. Do the following:
1a (If this is the startup drive.) Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu if using Tiger.) Be sure to use the installer disk for the version of OS X you intend to install.
1b (If this is a non-startup volume or external drive.) Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size. -
Logging Kernel Panic during startup.
Occasionally I have Kernel Panic while the Loading Modules stage. Can I redirect the error to a file (it is quiet large)? I don;t have a serial port to connect a terminal.
I've been trying to find some way to capture panic info without a serial port, too. The best thing I came up with was kdb/kgdb. It will page through the panic and stack dump, and let you look at the kernel log buffer in memory. I just looked, and I think it's running at that point in the bootstrap.
kdump/kexec might be another possibility, but I don't know about loading a panic handler that early..
If you find anything, post back. I'm interested, too. -
Frequent Kernel Panics for Macbook Pro (Late 2013)
Hi,
After a clean install of Yosemite, I'm experiencing frequent kernel panics. I'm using MBP (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with 2 Ghz and 8 GB RAM. Looking at the problem details, there is no third party software that affects the system.
Things that I did:
Reset PRAM
Did a clean install of Yosemite
Ran hardware diagnostics (No issues)
Thanks. I appreciate any help.

Crashing with Kernel Panics for no apparent reason - HELP!!
Hello - new to this forum, and I hope someone can help me resolve a problem I've been recently having with my PowerMac G5.
It all started when I installed some an additional 2GB of RAM (bought from Crucial, which is always very good and reliable) to add to my existing 2GB of Apple RAM, and soon afterwards, found the Mac crashing with the 'grey veil of death' happening quite a lot.
I ran Memtest several times, which showed n problem with the RAM, but I removed it anyway, to see if it was that which was causing it, and the Mac still keeps crashing with either a grey veil of death, or just a total freezeup, requiring a hard-reboot.
I have tried everything - removing all attached devices, resetting the PRAM, pressing the little reset button on the logic board, removing the battery and unplugging the Mac for a day, swapping the Apple RAM (which has always been fine) into different slots.... nothing seems to work.
At the weekend, the Mac wouldn't even boot up, and kept turning itself off during startup after in the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning radar-wheel.
I got it to boot up OK from an external firewire drive I have, but Disk Utility said it couldn't fix the drive and Diskwarrior also said it was irreparable.
I did manage to get Techtool to repair it though, which took about 9 hours but it did successfully rebuild the volume structure and the Mac would then boot up fine and all seemed ok, but it still crashes randomly and for no apparent reason.
I never did put the new RAM back into the machine so it's all as it was before all this trouble started, and I have no devices attached to the Mac anymore, except the original Apple keyboard and mouse (which I don't normally use, but my wireless one doesn't let me start up from an external drive or reset PRAM or anything...).
I'm going mad trying to figure out what is wrong with this thing, and I have just read how to get a crash-report (although it means nothing to me), so am posting it here.. I hope that's OK....
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!
Thanks
Matt

The line which starts "BSD process name corresponding to current thread...." says something different in most of the panic logs, so it doesn't seem to be constantly mentioning one app or anything....
Does any of this make sense to anyone?!
Thanks
Matt -
Can someone help decipher a kernel panic for me please?

Can someone help decipher this kernel panic for me?
This has been happening too much lately- several times an day, or more when i get busy, it seems. I thought it might be bad memory or bad video card. the guys at the computer shop did an Apple video card and memory test and said it's fine.
Can someone read this and tell me what's going on? Thanks and sorry if I posted this in the wrong place.
