Logging onto Neighbor's Wireless
My airport will sometimes log onto my neighbor's wireless instead of mine because theirs is not encrypted. Is there a way to delete it out of my list of wireless hotspots?
Dear Ben:
By "your airport," I assume you mean that your computer logs into their wireless signal. Under OS X 10.4.7, you can edit what are called the "preferred networks" that your computer tries to access.
Open up "Network" in "System Preferences." At the top of the screen, there will be two pull-down menus. In "Show" choose "Airport." Here you have another pull-down menu, offering "automatic" or "preferred networks."
If you select "preferred networks," and list your network first, your computer will try to connect to your wireless network whenever it's in range. If you highlight your neighbor's network and click the "minus" sign that appears under the list of networks (between "+" and "Edit"), your computer should stop connecting to their network automatically.
I think the process is extremely similar in the last few releases of OS X, but I specified 10.4.7 because I'm running that now and so can report with the most precision. I hope this helps.

I am trying to log onto my wireless connection but it keeps telling me I'm unable to locate any wireless network. I know there are several networks nearby. Is this a problem with my phone or my router?
I found a solution that has worked on both iPhone 4's I have that have had the same issues, and also including not being able to download updates in the App store.
Go to Settings > WiFi and turn it OFF.
Next go to General > Cellular > Cellular Data and turn it OFF
Next go back to Settings > WiFi and turn it ON, (wait a few seconds for it to sync with your network)
Finally go back to General > Cellular > Cellular Data and turn it ON.
I had the same issues on both my wife's phone, and my own, and it fixed it immediately without changing any proxy settings or reboots, (which I did try on my phone and did not work, but did not try on my wife's phone)
Hope this helps! -
Problem with Windows 98 logging onto wireless network
I have a unique issue that I am having some issues trying to fix. I have a
PC that is running Windows 98SE that connects to the network via a Cisco
Aironet 350 wireless card. I removed this card from another PC and it was
working fine a week and a half ago. I place this card in the other PC and
install the drivers and Novell Client 3.40 and I can't log onto the
network. The PC can associate to the AP though. I can also put in a regular
10/100 ethernet card and get on the network. We use 128-bit WEP encryption.
I have checked my WEP key and it's correct. I have set the client
properties based on another PC that is connected so that shouldn't be the
issue. I have 15 other PC's with the same card and client version that are
getting on the network just fine. Also when we look at our AP through the
web interface, in a column where it usually lists the authenticated
machine's IP addresses, it only says Unassigned for this machine. I am at a
loss of where to go next with this issue. I have been looking around not
only Novell's site but Cisco's as well and no dice there.I would truly
appreciate any help anyone could give me.
Thank You

Bound applies to Protocols in general. (W9x versions, Not XP)
Open "Network". (You can right click "Network Neighborhood", select
Properties or use the control panel)
Inspect the "Properties" for each adapter listed on the Configuration
Tab.
Do Not change anything at this time, and ALWAYS choose CANCEL for
safety . Once you have it figured, you will make and save changes :)
There are 3 groups of entries. Clients,Services,Protocols.
You choose to "Bind" a particular protocol(s) to a adapter(part of the
Adapters properties).
Not all protocols need be bound to the SAME adapter (nor is it
desired). Example: Bind PPOE to dial-up, TCP/IP to the Wireless
adapter, IPX to the 10-100T WIRED adapter. << Example, do NOT really
do this.
802.11 wireless DOES NOT support the IPX protocol. If your printers
use IPX (only), then you will need a Print Queue on the server for
that printer and PRINT to that PRINT Q from the wireless (or IP only)
devices.
Ah!

Start with getting a Internet connection to work.
That will also indicate that TCP/IP is working.
When you don't use DHCP, you have to do everything (settings)
yourself, CORRECTLY :^)
IP (no clash with existing stations)
Subnet mask, same as every one else on the network.
Gateway the A/P
DNS as needed, one should be your ISP's suggested.
Is the A/P correctly configured for your Non-DHCP network?
*AND* are you sure you have the proper adapter drivers for W98(se)????

Computer on wireless cannot log onto domain but if i change name it works.
I have an XP machine that can not log onto a 2003 domain with the a certain name. I have narrowed it down to the name and on wireless. If i put this on the wire it works fine and if i change the name it works fine on wireless. Due to our naming convention this machine needs to be named this and i can not change it. I have included the debug log but i can not make heads or tails of it. Has anyone else had similar problems and what did you do to resolve it?
That is the part that gets sticky with me.
1.) truly a bad password
if this was the case then changing the name would still render the computer useless wouldn't it? In this scenario if i change the computer name the wireless works fine so i would assume the certificate is installed correctly.
2.) ACS hasn't been told what directory to check on non-internal accounts
this is an internal computer and again changing the name works fine changing it from xx-xx-ms20 to xx-xx-ms33 allows it work fine. I choose 33 because the last computer in that lab is 32.
3.) Windows using the cached credentials, with a non-domain login to the profile
i can not even log in as it says "domain not available"
There is no where that ACS or WCS stores a computer name as disabled or something like that is there? I see a disabled list in ACS but nothing is in there but i was curious if there was as super secret hiding place Cisco put in that i cant seem to find.
also thank you for all your help. -
Mac keeps logging onto neighbour's network!
I have an Airport system connected to my hi-fi, which correctly appears as a network option. However, a rogue network has also appeared (I assume a neighbour).
I am a bit concerned about security and the like, so I'd like to set my Mac to not ever log onto the neighbour's network, and to only search for my own one.
I have tried SYSTEM PREFERENCES - NETWORK, but oddly the network names don't appear in the PREFERRED NETWORKS box. However, they do appear in the Finder's top taskbar.
How can I tell the Mac to only log into my hi-fi network (or - more importantly - ignore the rogue one).
Thanks!Very amusing. My daughter has an iBook with Airport. I'm not wireless, or wasn't over summer when she kept conveniently accessing the internet. Never the tekkie, I assumed it was by some invisible force ("magic"), courtesy of the amazing apple. Turns out she was innocently airporting off of several neighbors (pick anyone at any time); only one of them had put in a password, but sometimes she was limited if the non-password folks had their computer off. We didn't figure out what was going on for several months, when a tekkie's visit discovered it. She never did any mischief, but I agree with those concerned about security. Appreciate the info in those replies; we'll do that when I get upgraded.
I have Airport Extreme base station now, so neighbors are not necessary, LOL.
G3 converted to G4 Mac OS 9.2.x non-wireless but have Airport Extreme for wireless laptops in household -
Avoiding picking up neighbor's wireless internet connection
How do I lock out or exclude neighboring internet connections when using WiFi in my home. My Macbook constantly picks up my neighbors unsecured connection. I discovered this when my network printer would not print and, after investigation, I discovered that I was logged onto my neighbor's network, rather than mine.
As another poster suggests, you need to look in the "Advanced" section of the Network Preference pane. When you open the Network pane, you will see a list of your Network Port Configurations. Select Airport, then click the "Advanced..." button at the bottom-right.
The dialogue sheet that appears should start out with the "Airport" tab selected. Here, there is a list of every network you have joined. Simply select a network, then click the "-" sign below the list to remove it (you must first have opened the padlock in the main network pane, if it was locked).
You can also drag wireless networks into a desired order, but this probably will not stop your Macbook from sometimes connecting to the other network. It would be best to remove it entirely.

EAP-TLS and getting a new user to log in on a wireless network
I have setup EAP-TLS using AP1232 + ACS + CA + Active Directory + some wireless client machines. Works fine.
My issue is when I have a new user, who has never logged onto the client workstation. I know that if I attach the workstation to a wired network and have the user login, request a cert, issue it, and install it, the wireless will work once I have the wired connection disabled and wireless enabled. However, that kinda defeats the purpose of a WLAN.
How can I get my new users in? After all, getting associated to the AP depends on the user cert, which depends on the ability to get to the network in the first place to request/install a cert.
After further reading and research, I believe that my delima will be fixed by configuring EAP-TLS Machine Authentication. What I'd like to know is whether the CA in this scenario MUST be an Enterprise Root CA or can it be a Standalone CA?
Parascheck the below link and read server requirements.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814394
The stanalone ca needs to be trusted by AD
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.win2000.security/browse_thread/thread/1cf098c0dfa97ca0/b964dd05c12fd3fb?lnk=st&q=eap-tls+certificates+standalone+root&rnum=2&hl=en#b964dd05c12fd3fb
What windows are you using? The default behaviour of windows is it do user authentication. You would need to play with registry to make systems to do only machine authentication.
You would need connectivity when you want install the ca certificate, or else allow open authentication on the access point to have the connectivity and once the certificates are installed disable it.

Unable to log onto MSN messenger
Hi,
I am currently experiencing major problems logging onto msn messenger at home. The funny thing about my problem is that msn works fine using other wireless connections. I have called up my internet provider (tiscali), apple technical support, and belkin (the company that makes my wireless router). No such luck yet. Apparently I have managed to figure out that it isn't that program that is at fault, nor is my computer. I can log in fine with other wireless networks (e.g. school library). The tricky thing is that it isn't the fault of my internet provider. There is no problem in me surfing the web (logging into hotmail to check my email)and using internet wirelessly in the house. I downloaded adiumx, amsn, fire, and msn messenger for macs. none of the will allow me to sign in with any user name ending with @hotmail.com from what i have concluded.
it just won't read my hotmail address when i type in my username and password.
my internet provider is tsicali and since it did not come with a wireless router, i bought a belkin one on my own. the belkin technicians have put down all the firewalls (dmz settings?)and security settings and I STILL can't log on to msn.
there are no firewalls on my macbook by default. so there's nothing to disable.
tiscali does not block any sites for their users as an internet provider.
I have even gone into utilities and to the terminal icon and switched the mtu setting to 1400
what more can i do right now?
does anybody have any idea what could be wrong?
my computer? router? internet provider?
please advise!
mucho gracias
p.s. my flatmate uses the wireless internet just fine. she has a pc laptop and can log on to msn messenger no problem

Website/software that prevens you from logging onto the Internet
Recently I read about a website or software that allows you to disengage from the Internet for a period of time.
Do you know the URL for this site or product?
Thank you.Your question says that you want to prevent logging onto the internet...that is very easy to do, simply unplug the cable to your modem. Or turn the AirPort card off if you are using wireless.
If you are looking for software for another purpose, such as parental controls, that is a different topic and there are various ways of preventing unfettered access to the internet. -
I can't log onto my WiFi with my Touch
I'm using my Touch, AirPort Express and the remote app to control iTunes and play music through my stereo.
I like it but I'm having some problems. For some reason I can't log onto my own wifi with the touch when I have the wireless network secured, even when I type in the networks password. When I have the wireless security disabled it works fine but when I make the wireless connection secure I can't log on.
Does anybody know how I can solve this problem? I love the set up but it does me no good if I'm vulnerable to hackers. What am I doing wrong?
I don't know if it matters but I have a Linksys router.I have a PC if this helps.

It says I'm logged onto the internet but...
We got a new modem for our pc today because our old one died. Trying to use the wireless connection to get my Macbook back online it said that it found the connection and the connection had full strength, but when I try to use Safari it says that I am not logged onto the internet. When I go to airport the dot next to it is yellow instead of green and says that I may not be able to get onto the internet because of Airport's IP address, which I can not find. That was not an issue with the old router. What do I do?
I'm having the same issue but I don't have a new router and it was working earlier today. I posted a question asking about it because I didn't see this. I hope someone can help us with this.

Hi,
I cannot log onto Pandora suddenly. I have checked and have Safari 4.3. Pandora requires 4.0. I have cleared cookies and cache and still am having no luck. Just started 2 days ago or so. Any advice?Glad to hear that you found it.
Unfortunately, when we try to help folks...we usually stumble around for ideas, especially when we don't have the "whole picture". Your router/modem security setup was the wild card.
In your case, it was particularly odd that wife's PC could get out to Citrix through the router's firewall, but Mac couldn't.
But I'd be willing to bet that there's a FAQ section at GoToMyPC, that will explain this for you. But when you're up to your ears in alligators...well you know the rest
(Do you have a firewall running on both the Motorola and on the wireless router? Or don't you have a router, as such, and the network is provided using just the Motorola? Something to think about. Two firewalls are not necessarily better than one).
no reply needed...just glad you're "in". -
My MacBook Air, once pressed the power button, comes up with a file containing a question mark. I have tried re-starting it but this logo continues to appear and will not go. I cannot log onto my mac. Any suggestions as to what this is please?
You need to reinstall OS X:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
For the last couple of weeks every time I log onto firefox it is in Dutch. Someone is accessing my facebook account from Amsterdam and that also appears in Dutch. Hopefully that one has been resolved but it is a big worry. I did nothing to change my login to firefox so why is this happening as it is a major irritation!

My safari v 5.0.2 just crashes once i log onto facebook, within minutes of logging onto facebook, safari shuts down without any warning what so ever, n its not only the facebook tab or window, all the windows quit themselves and then this creen comes up with an error message, i am pasting the error message below … i had googled this problem earlier and o the discussion forum i had found someone mentioning that safari should be run in 32 bit, so i have even done that, but of no use, it still quits. Also if i open facebook on firefox, it works absolutely fine, no problem what so ever, but only safari keeps quitting. Safari has quit before aswell when i was on some other websites, but i do no remember which website it was, however the facebook quitting happens without fail, each and everytime. Please help.
