Logic 7.1.1: Ability to place downbeats? (Film Scoring Question)

Here is my situation: I'm scoring a film and the director loves my music in this particular cue, and wants me to add a few more bars to the beginning of the cue as a lead in. My music currently starts on bar 5 at 109bpm in 4/4, however, in order to get it so sync up to picture, the first bar is running at 120bpm in 5/4 and bars 2-3 are running in 4/4 at 150bpm, with bar 4 used to set the cues 109bpm in 4/4 tempo. (I dont remember why I did this, but it works)
I obviously want to leave my music in sync with the picture, so I have locked all currently composed regions to SMPTE, however, when I change bars 2-4 to the proper 109bpm in 4/4 time in order to create more music in the beginning, the locked midi regions no longer start on downbeats (or any beat at all for that matter)
This exactly what should happen, as the regions are locked to SMPTE and are thus ignoring logics beat maps. However, I need to compose more music, and thus would like to have the cues function within logics beat maps once again. Is there a way to tell logic where the downbeats of bars should be, e.g. just drag and drop the barlines directly on a midi region? I believe digital performer has this ability (or it did back in 2002) and thus I was wondering if logic does as well.
Sorry if this is confusing. Any ideas on how to get the final result I'm looking for would be greatly appreciated. I thank you all in advance for any information at all.

Justin, thanks for referring to my method as a "method" LOL.
Yeah, it's a method I guess... here's how I did it.
First, I started with a new song and simply recreated Jonathan's tempo and time sigs as he described in his post, which made the tempo map look as follows:
1 1 1 1 Tempo 120.00 at 01:00:00:00    (5/4)
2 1 1 1 Tempo 150.00 at 01:00:02:15    (4/4)
3 1 1 1 Tempo 150.00 at 01:00:04:03
4 1 1 1 Tempo 109.00 at 01:00:05:21
5 1 1 1 Tempo 109.00 at 01:00:07:27
He said his count-in started at bar 4, first music at bar 5. So I made note of the timecode number for bars 4 and 5.
So I'm looking at this and thinking, "if bars 2 and 3 were at 109 bpm instead of 150, that would give him 2 extra bars in front of his count-in, making 3 good bars of 109."
OK, so I changed bars 2 & 3's tempo to 109! While I knew that this would change the SMPTE location for bars 4 and 5 (as well as 2 and 3), at least I was getting somewhere with the idea of establishing additional measures in front of his existing cue at the right tempo.
So the only question remaning was, "what tempo would bar 1 have to be changed to in order to make bar 4 (and 5) line up at their original SMPTE locations again? Using the mouse I adjusted the tempo at bar 1 until bar 4's SMPTE number was the same as it was before.
That's it! The map then became:
1 1 1 1 Tempo 234.00 at 01:00:00:00 (5/4)
2 1 1 1 Tempo 109.00 at 01:00:01:08 (4/4)
3 1 1 1 Tempo 109.00 at 01:00:03:15
4 1 1 1 Tempo 109.00 at 01:00:05:21
5 1 1 1 Tempo 109.00 at 01:00:07:27

You can select 5 (or more images) and place them by dragging in Adobe InDesign. After creating document go to File > Place, navigate to images and select them. In InDesign start dragging and press right arrow key couple of times then release mouse button. You can export file as PDF, JPG, PNG image from File > Export.

  • I am running Logic Pro 9.1.7, and I use a Roland RD700GX keyboard to input midi data into Logic.  How do I set up Logic to record the Roland's own internal Grand Piano sounds into Logic, while retaining the ability to make midi edits? By Eggie

I am running Logic Pro 9.1.7 on a mid-2011 Intel iMac running OS10.7.4. I use a Roland RD700GX as my midi input keyboard.  How can I set up Logic to record The RD700GX's own internal Grand Piano sounds, while retaining the ability to take advantage of Logic 9's midi editing capabilities. I am a relative newcomer to Logic, and I haven't been able to find an answer in The Logic 9 User Manual. A step by step procedure would be much appreciated. Thank you.
    Eggie0379

Create a new External Midi Track, set the MIDI port to the one being connected to teh RD700. Now,create a new Software Instrument track. Select the external instrument plug-in. Set the MIDI destination and the audio input inside the Plug-in. Now, you can record the MIDI notes and hear the sound of the RD700. Once you've editied, you can bounce the track.

  • General place for newbie datamodeler questions?

With the production release of SQL Developer Data Modeler I'd assume that this forum will draw a bunch of new users. Is there a better place to ask some pretty simple, newbie like questions that won't bother the more seasoned members?
For instance, I am working in a Rails environment, which has some stringent naming conventions, one of which is that all of the primary key columns are numeric and called "id", with the foreign key linked columns called <table_name>_id.  When engineering a logical model to a relational model, the added foreign key columns are all "id#".  Is there a way I can define a naming rule to keep me from having to redo the relation column names?
Also, we have a standard set of columns (mostly Rails related) which appear in every table. Can I define a generation rule which automatically includes these tables?
    Thanks

Thank you. I will try changing that setting.
IS there a setting which tells the relational model to automatically create pk and fk indexes? I haven't seen one, and manually setting them up is a tedious task. --sw

  • Logic 7.1 and Pro Tools...a few questions...

    Hi everyone,
I just have a couple of questions regarding Logic and Pro Tools. My employer has commissioned me to upgrade his studio from Logic 5.0 (mac os version) to the latest version, which is now 7.1.1 (but we may stick with 7.1 just till I'm sure it won't mess up his setup). I thought I'd post just to get a bit of clarification.
Here are the details of his main theatre studio:
    Pro Tools 6.4.1
    2 x Digidesign 888 I/O Interface
    OS X Panther 10.3.5
    Dual 1.25 GHz G4
    1 Gig DDR SDRAM
I've read and seen a lot of posts regarding big problems running Logic and certain configurations of Pro Tools in conjunction, however until now this has not been a concern for me as my studio is purely based off of core audio Logic 7.1 and Reason 3.03. So here are the main questions I have:
    1. How much is the upgrade going to be? Is is just the standard upgrade or is he going to get shafted and have to buy the whole program again (NOTE: he does have the dongle and all the necessary paperwork from Logic 5.0 mac version)
    2. Are there known problems with the configuration that I've outlined above, I really don't want to suggest he go ahead and a) upgrade b) buy the the program again if he must, if there is going to be a problem, he predominantly works in Pro Tools and Logic will just be available as an added selling point to his studio, and composition ablity.
Any information about this or clarification would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance,
    Graham Campbell
PS - if you need more info to answer don't hesiate to ask.

    Hi Justin,
thanks for the advice/info...I got the quote for the upgrade it'll be 435 Canadian after tax (Just curious if we order the upgrade will it upgrade to 7.1? or do we need to get that seperate, I was confused by your wording).
As for the setup my employer hasn't used Logic at all in a professional setting. He had 5.0 Platinum in case any of his clients needed it however that hasn't been the case, he said it was working fine though. As for Pro Tools, his setup the one I mentioned above, has been rock solid all the way up to 10.3.9 (which he has on two of his other editing sweets). So hopefully that will be the case for Logic as well. I've told him that I think he'll need to address the RAM issue as I'm sure he'll be suprise how quick Sculpture etc eat up the RAM.
My main concern was wether running Logic not using the 'built in audio' driver but rather say the Pro Tools interface would be incompatible, hope that makes sense I haven't done any Pro Tools with Logic set ups before so the wording may wrong. Thanks for the reply though, cheers,
    Graham

  • Logic pro 7.2.3 and 10.4.8 Upgrade question

im running logic pro 7.2.3 with mac os 10.4.8 on a g5 2.0 dual core (non-intel ppc) 5gigs of ram. I would like to upgrade both logic and the mac to the latest versions but i am concerned about performance etc. anybody using same specs and successfully upgraded. thank you in advance.

You'll be able to run Logic 9.02 and OS 10.5.8. Beyond that we are both out of the upgrade path until we get intel macs. It runs pretty well for me. More stable than 8.02, but less stable than 7.2.3. Save often. Time Machine is great though.... no more manual backups. The new features in 9.02 are worth it .

  • Faces / Places and Mobileme Gallery question

Hi all, i could not find much on this but my question is when using faces / places and Mobileme gallery does this actually take up hard drive space ? With faces and places does that actaully create another image or is it just linked to your main library ? And for Mobileme Gallary does that actually download the images to your Mac ?
    Thanks

Drop them on the desktop then upload directly from the MoMe Album.

  • Logic Pro X - The "Force Apple Lion 10.7 support" question - your opinion

    Hi.
Now, that Apple has released Logic Pro X, we Pros have to learn that the minimum system requirement is set to OS X 10.8.4. In my book this is an asolute no go, with no reason other to impose Apples App-store power onto users to buy new hardware. So the questions for me are:
    1. Why is the minimum requirement not 10.7 ? There are a lot of MacPros and other out there capable of only 10.7, yet still capable machines for production (remember, Final Cut Pro X runs fine on the first gen MacPros…)
    2. I do not swallow it that the arguemnt might be that feature xyz didn't work out in 10.7. Let's make it clear, Logic Pro X should have been Logic 9 really, but Apple did not do their homework. Just like Avid released Protools 11, which should have been Protools 9 already. At least, Protools 11 runs fine on first Gen MacPros with 10.7.
    3. I believe - yet can't proove - that the installer just looks for the installed system. Yet the core code might run just fine. Why is there no Trial download as with FCPX ?
What is your opinion ? Is it worth the effort to generate pressure to reduce minimum system requirement to 10.7 ?
    PS.: Stay calm and relaxed
    Regards

I'm on an original Mac Pro with an HD 5770 and 12 GB of RAM, and 4 x 1TB drives running FCPX with zero problems.
    I also own a MacBook Pro i7 running 10.8.4
After using Logic since the eMagic days I will now have to investigate shifting to another DAW simply in order to be able to run the same software on my tower (studio machine) and laptop (live recording). There's thankfully no great rush as Logic 9 is no less capable today than it was yesterday, but I think today is a very sad day even so.
    Things I believe:
Apple could, had they chosen, have released a Lion compatable version of Logic Pro X. If they can do it for FCPX, they can do it for Logic Pro X
Apple could, had they chosen, have released a version of Mountain Lion compatible with EFI 32 based Mac Pro's - if hackers can do it then of course Apple could. Had they bothered to do this, then right now they'd have something to really boast about.
Apple have an ethical and environmental obligation to do what they can to support older machines, so long as doing so does not cripple current machines or future development. Doing so might take a bit of ingenuity and maybe even some style and panache. I thought that was what Apple was about - and I think it used to be, but clearly things have changed.
People are running Mountain Lion on machines like mine. Unsupported of course. But its still possible.
That Apple chose not to do these things shows quite clearly what they think of their professional customers - and by professional I do not mean "rich" - I mean people for whom a computer is a creative tool which needs to be stable, reliable and capable - and just work when you switch it on and get ready for a productive day.
I have to wonder how many other professional musicians (who let's face it really don't NEED screamingly fast machines - not compared to the video world anyways) are going to be feeling equally sad and let down over the next few days as word of this spreads.
    Just some thoughts

I've tried to install Protools 7.3.1 but I always get different DAE-errors in Logic 7.2.3
Who is already working with Logic 7.2.3 and Protools 7.3.1 on PPC (not intel?)
    Is it working fine?
How have you installed it? Only Protools 7.3.1 above an older version of protools or everything (also Logic) from scratch?
I work in Logic with DAE en DTDM enabled (no core audio).

  • No good place to post this question

Sorry, but I did scour all of the topics and couldn't find a good place to ask this
My company is building a website that will be of interest to college students. We are going to accept advertising at some point. In the interim, we're going to seed the site with free ads. One thing we'd like to do is include some of the great ads that Apple produces, at no cost, of course.
So, is it illegal to put Apple ads at a website? A quick Google search sees lots of people posting them here and there. Is it okay, or is it something Apple just doesn't pursue because free publicity is not a bad thing?
We, um, don't wish to be sued by Apple, of course, and I suspect this forum isn't the place for legal advice, but I figured perhaps someone here could enlighten us on a few rules or point out a direction for us to pursue this. After all, the more people who see the ads, the better, no?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

    Hi, Rob.
    > ... I suspect this forum isn't the place for legal advice ...
Generally speaking it isn't, although that doesn't always stop us from adding our two cents. ; - )
But rather than offer my opinion on the matter, here are a few links that might get you in contact with the appropriate people:

The Discussions are laid out based on Apple Products. Does Apple make a product that does this? If not then I would post on the forum 'Using Mac OS 10.4' where more general questions can be asked. Though the best place to look for help with an issue like this might be elsewhere - for instance on the Mac OS X hints forums:

  • I sure hope this is the right place to ask this question.

    Hello.
Is there a place where I can record and then listen to the recording of my voice? I need to say something into it for an assignment at school.
    Thank you.

    Hello
    Open GarageBand
Click New Music Project, choose a location and click Create
In the bottom left hand corner click the + symbol and choose Real Instrument, click Create.
Click the Red record button ◉ in the bar at the bottom. You are now recording.
When you're finished click the pair of scissors ✂ in the bottom left hand corner of the window to open the editor and you can then use cut, copy and paste commands to edit as required.
Then if you need to burn to disc:
Choose Share menu > Send song to iTunes
    Open iTunes
Create a playlist by clicking the + symbol in the bottom left hand corner of the window.
Click Burn Disk ☢ in the bottom right hand corner.
    Hope that helps.

  • Right place to ask tuning question?

I have a query running that takes 2 minutes.
    It hits seven tables, of row counts 11, 3890, 8049, 9374, 9386, 9510, and 26460.
By all means this is a small query. I have no cartesian joins (but everything is a nested loops outer), and get 7160 rows output.
I believe that there should be no way that this query takes two minutes based on the size of the tables it hits and
the simplicity of it. Unfortunately, four of the tables are 'joined in' as views that are filtered by a date from a one row
table that is always cached. I have tried inline views instead of using the views, and putting an index on a
table (just because it was doing a full table scan and nothing else I had done had changed the plan), and that
gives me about 2 seconds faster response. I don't think I need an index on this table, but if it makes it go faster then
    I'm all for it..
I've tried CBO (currently it's hinted to use RULE) and PQO, and they all go way out of proportion and take a lot
longer than two minutes. Is this the place to put table descriptions, the query, and tkprof output? Would anyone be able
    to assist me?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

Thanks, we analyze weekly. I'm trying to get off RBO (as it is really not improving at all between versions (has not been for awhile actually)).
This is one of few views that have RBO, and the query time seems unreasonable for the amount of data it's pulling. I really expected to
    see a Cartesian Merge Join.
    1. Using Oracle 8.1.6.3 (in about two months, 9iR2).
    2. Have you been on my system??? We've had views 12 levels deep, with the 'outer' view doing 25 union alls. That was a mess. Fortunately,
I did not design it so I can say it sucked (not that I'm saying I could have done anything better). This is fairly simple: here's the
tkprof explain plan. This is the original plan. Adding the one index had much the same plan, but had a index range access on C_BKG_ADDRESS.
C_BKG_ADDRESS is a MV I put this at the end. All the other C_ views basically select * from the base table where effective and expiration dates are between extract_date,
which is a value in a one row cached table (table is only one row, one column and is cached).
