Logic 7.1.1 Step Input

Why does step input work, even if in my environment NO cables are connected to sequencer and through? There are no cables coming out of my Physical Input object either.
Step input seems to listen to all MIDI in ports, no matter what. Shouldn't this be configurable somewhere? It's a huge mess when using the IAC bus...

  • Step input key commands active all the time - really annoying

In Logic X, I'm experiencing a problem where the step input key commands are overriding the global key commands, even when the step input window is not open.
For example, when I'm looking at the main Logic window, with the step input window closed:
-I press the space bar, and the playhead advances one division value
-I press the T to change the tool, and it creates a region and puts a tiny F# there (!!)
-I press Y to open/close the library, and it creates a region and puts a G# there.
The only way around it right now is to edit my key commands and delete all step input commands that are getting in the way of the more universal ones.
    Has anyone else encountered this?

    Yes, I am.
Actually, I haven't even really been using the step window.  The problem seemed to start out of nowhere, and I noticed by looking through the "Edit key commands" window (opt-K), that what Logic was doing was using all the step input key commands instead of the global commands.

  • Step Input Problem

    Greetings,
    Perhaps someone can help me.
I'm transcribing some of my written scores into logic. I have a score window open with the step input keyboard visible. I have assigned the number keys to pick the note values to mimic Sibelius and have keystrokes to increase/decrease the step division. When I press these keys the step input keyboard accurately depicts the keystrokes. However... no matter what note value is selected or current division I can only input quarter notes. Strange, yes?
Is this a known bug or am I missing something? Any insight will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

    Holly,
Have you opened the Audio MIDI Setup app on your mac? It's found in your Launchpad app (on your doc) and Other folder it should be in there. Make sure your MIDI keyboard is recognized and configured for the mac. Also look at your MIDI settings within Logic as well.

  • Must use Step Input Keyboard prior to using midi controller? When I attempt to use my midi keyboard conteoller for step input, it won't work unless I input the first note in each track via the Step Input Keyboard. This doesn't seem right...

  • Step Input Recording via an external keyboard?

    Hi there.
I'm having difficulty with inputting data from my midi keyboard to logic express. when i play the notes from my external MIDI keyboard notes register on the transport bar and I can hear the notes, however they will not appear in the piano roll window. I have followed the instructions from the brilliant book by David Nahmani and I have also read the manual and I cannot seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I have the MIDI in button enabled and I also have the instrument track record enabled and I have the empty MIDI region created in the instrument track which I created using the pencil tool.
I saw a video online, which showed that the step input will not respond to the external keyboard until you actually go to Options - open the step input keyboard and press one of the keys and then your external MIDI keyboard can input notes.
I tried this and it worked, however I can just play the one note and the play head will move but when I play another note on the external keyboard Logic will again not register the note.
Can you please help me solve the issue
Sorry for the long winded question. I hope It makes sense and if not just ask
    Thanks in advance

The best place to ask would be in the Logic Express forum.

  • Step input, chord mode not working?

    Hello Gurus!
I'm using Logic with a midi Keyboard and the Step Input Windows and I have a small but significant difference between the two:
When I use Step Input Windows with chord mode selected the playhead correctly doesn't move if I hit more note on the Step Input Windows but If i input the notes with the midi keyboard (with the chord mode on) it moves!
I tried also with the musical Typing windows and the Keyboard windows, same result. Chord mode seems to work only with Step Input Windows as note entry tool.
Is something wrong here or is only me?
To me is illogical this behavior, if chord mode is selected the playhead should not move, indipendently on what tools one use to insert the notes.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks

  • Problem with step input using MIDI Keyboard

    Hi,
I'm new to Logic Pro X and wanted to know how I can use my MIDI keyboard as a source of Step Input Recording.
I created a new software instrument track, then open Window - > Show step input keyboard.
If I click the keyboard on the screen, it records notes with no problem. However, if I play my MIDI keyboard while on-screen keyboard is shown, it does not record anything even though I hear the sound I played.
Is there anything I can do about this?
    Thanks!
    -Holly
EDIT : Actually I could solve the problem. I needed to click "MIDI IN" button on "MIDI Region" window.

  • Shortcut  - Step input keyboard

    Hello!
I'm going to use StepinputKeyboard to write some parts in Logic 9.
Can I use the numpad to set the value of notes?
    Ex:
    1=1/8 5=quarter note etc...
    Can I do it?
    Thanks a lot.

I don't think you can use the Num Pad, but you can assign your own key commands to all aspects of the step input keyboard.
Open the Key commands window in Logic Pro : Preferences : Key commands
In the Options menu select Collapse All.
Click on the triangle next to Step Input Keyboard. You can assign key commands to each of these elements in the Step Keyboard by selecting a command and clicking on Learn by Key Label. Then type the key command you want to assign to it.

  • MIDI Step Input Recording

Whenever I initiate step input recording Logic creates a one-bar region. If I enter notes beyond one bar I can see the notes in the piano roll editor and event list editor but not the score editor. After I finish I have to manually expand the size of the region. Is that the way it's supposed to work?
Also, the documentation says that to initiate step input recording you just need to activate the midi input in one of the editors. The only way I've been able to do it is bring up the step input keyboard and play at least one note on the keyboard. Otherwise I cannot do step input from my external keyboard. Again is that correct?

    I have the same results.
After step recording, Have to manually expand (drag right to lengthen) the midi region in the arrange.
But, before I can step record, I have to manualy insert the blank midi region, open it as matrix (piano roll) and then engage midi IN button, play keyboard and notes are entered. I don't have to
bring up the step input keyboard.

  • Step-input: some of the notes of a chord are erroneously deselected

    Hi,
I have to step-input an existing score and tried it with the step-input-window in combination with midi-input from an usb-keyboard.
Most functions work fine but if I play a chord (3 or more notes) then the software decides in some cases not to select every note of the chord but only some of them. This is annoying when I want to raise the length of these notes (hold button - key command).
I often have to reselect the complete chord by mouse and then change the length.
    I use two different usb-keyboards.

  • Step Input issue

Hi folks...i have a very annoying problem...many times...while using a multi timbral instrument....on one of those hybrid aux midi channels that i have routed to kontakt....step input does not work via my midi keyboard....it works on the on screen step input keyboard...but not through my external midi keyboard ...i've made sure the midi in option is selected...anyone else faced with the same problem....seems to be a glitch and its really getting in the way of my workflow especially when doing harp arpeggios while scoring

I dont think that this has directly something to do with LSMW.
It is more related to the transaction your try to post in the batch input.
Search OSS with the error message number. I had seen some notes for number SE001, but your message is actually twice in the message table, and you did not tell the message number.
If it is message SE001, then you may find programm corrections in OSS.
Otherwise just log out and in again and try, or open a message at OSS yourself if the problem still persists

Will anyone know why my step input keyboard does not show the musical notes. It is showing some weird red symbols including commas, and quotations.

Hm - sounds like a font problem to me. Check if all fonts are properly installed.

Tsk tsk, Nigel, don't you see: this is a story - with a cliffhanger... he said he tried... but he never clarifies if he succeeded or not... but still, he has to do it. It's stronger than him, bigger than him, there's no escaping the step-input and midi-input via usb-keyboard scoring... it's fate I tell you! Fate!

  • Step input in GB?

I have a MIDI KB and want to input some scores that I have.
Not being skilful enough to "play" it in I would like to put it in in "Step" mode.
That is one chord at a time for a piano score.
Is there a simple way to do that?
I googled and search GB help but no luck so far.
    TIA
    Peter

GB has no step input. You can slow down your song as much as you want, if that helps, or enter notes in the graphic piano roll or notation modes.
