Logic 7 songs sound different in Logic 8 - why?

i am not guessing. bounce, phase invert, mix the two, and it is really strange.
what i've seen quickly, that the adaptive limiter plugin has changed a little.
setting a -0.1dB ceiling in 7 causes -0.1dB peak, in 8, it will be 0.
but there must be something else. or is it the adaptive limiter plugin that has changed?
can't be. the comparsion above shows it will be something else.

1) Did you try phase canceling the bounces b4 converting them to Mp3? If so What happened
2) Have you compared the wave files at close zoom - to see if they seem to differ somehow
3) Did you bounce without any plugs running at all - if not it would surely interest the H out me if you were to.... and then compare
Hi Steve,
This was all mentioned in that original thread, but I realize it got kind of long, so I'll reiterate here.
First off, all my tests were done with 24 bit/44.1k files. The mp3's only came into existence once I decided to post the files on-line.
My first test was to bounce a section of that song in version 7, using no plug-ins. I then opened that same mix in version 8, and hit bounce. Phase flipped the mix in version 7, against the mix done in version 8, and it completely cancelled.
I then added some Logic EQ's and compressors, as well as one Space Designer verb (used only a bit on the snare) in Logic 7, and then bounced. Opened the new mix with plug-ins in version 8, and then bounced. Phase flipped those two mixes, and they did not cancel.
I never did look closely at the waveforms to see if anything visibly was happening. Although the mix that didn't null wasn't "almost" nulled, the acoustic guitars were quite audible, and the drums, although they sounded distant (which I chalked up to the use of the Space Designer verb) were very audible as well.
What I found REALLY interesting though, was I had some compression on the bass, and some EQ on the electric guitars, and both those instruments completely cancelled in the null test.

  • Song sounds different on another mac

I am trying to play a garage band song on another mac and the horns section sounds completely different. Any ideas?

figured it out. Didn't have the instruments downloaded on the other machine....
    doh.

  • Any new technology for volume adjustment so all songs sound the same?

It's the age old question about volume adjustment and playback - when all songs sound different. And we all know the sound check feature doesn't work that well - especially when you have songs in different bit rates. I play my iPod over a very large sound system and the differences in volume are shocking.
It doesn't look like anything works, after all these years. Someone recommended putting ALL the songs up to 100% in the volume adjustment ... but that can't possibly work, can it?
Have there been ANY improvements in sound adjustment??? Or am I still stuck adjusting each song myself?

Are you speaking from experience? From what I've seen, it's 30 bucks ... with mixed reviews. I use the iPod for broadcasting over a large sound system - maybe it's not the way to go (as some have recommended NOT using iPods to broadcast over public places) - but is there ANY foolproof method? If iVolume does, indeed, work ..... I have no problem shelling out $30 for it. Or is the human ear still the way to go??? (I currently, painstakingly, adjust each song - one by one!)

  • My Sine Wave File sounds different in Logic than iTunes

I am working on creating musical compositions with embedded sine wave patterns (which I am generating in a foriegn application). These sine waves are designed to entrain the brain to different frequencies to facilitate in stimulating meditative states of consciousness in the listener.
Unfortunately, when I import my sine wave audio file (in .wav format) Logic changes it and the rhythm is frequency is twice as fast! When I play the file in iTunes it sounds just the way I generated it, but when I import it into Logic through the audio bin or simply drag and drop onto the arrange window, it sounds different and cannot work for the precise control I require for my compositions.
Does any one have any idea why this is happening or what I can do to import my audio file without changing it?
Thank you so much for any ideas/assistance,
    Devlin Dewitt Donnelly

    Hi DD Smooth,
you should check sample rate settings on your original audio files and make them match the sample rate settings on your logic project prior to importing them. Sounds like you are generating 48khz .wav files in your foreign app and Logic must be set to 44.1khz by default. Or the other way around

  • Midi Apple Loops sound different when dragged on to song

When ever I drag a green midi loop from Apple Loops to my song it sounds different. All the effects are gone. I tried to put som reverb on it but it doesn't sound like it does wheyn played in the Apple Loops bar.
How can I use the green midi loops from Apple Loops as they sound there with that effect. The blue audio Apple Loops works fine.
I had this same problem in Logic Pro 9

There are some differences between the audio file previews contained in the loop and the actual data, sometimes by error, sometimes intentionally so.
For instance, if you preview an orchestral instrument, you hear it with reverb, as that's kinda how it's intended to sound, but when you drag it into Logic proper, you don't get reverb - because you will have one global reverb you send all the orchestral instrument too, rather than a hundred individual reverbs on each instrument.
Stuff like that. It varies, but there's nothing broken as such.

  • My final mix in itunes doesn't sound the same as in Logic. Why?

Having trouble with the difference in Logic and when I listen back in iTunes , it sounds so different. I have the flat EQ  set in iTunes

just checking... is "Sound Enhancer" in iTunes Preferences switched off???
Otherwise it will definitely sound different than Logic...

  • MIDI Loops sound different in preview

I'm a new user to Logic, and I'm confused about the green (MIDI) loops. When I preview one it sounds one way, but will sound different when I drag it to my arrangement, even when having it create a new track. On many of them it sounds like it's just missing some reverb, but the change is more drastic in others, eg. "Desire A Cellos", where it sounds like the wrong samples have been loaded.
Also I noticed that it loads instruments like "strings" and "piano" where I would expect it to be using the more sophisticated EXS sampler.
    Is this normal?
If I listen to a loops like "Concert Hall Piano 4" it sounds way more realistic in the preview than it does when I let it play the MIDI in my track. My first thought is that this must be because the "Piano" instrument doesn't know how to handle the extra midi data such as expression.
Is anyone else having this problem, and what can I do to fix it?
    Thanks,
    -Emil

To answer this question, loops are created to be used with Garageband, so all of the instruments selected will use Garageband instruments.
The other more important question....I DON'T KNOW! Great question, I'm having the same issue with mine. I hope someone can shed some light on this. If you double click the 'strings' instrument in the channelstrip where you have your 'Desire A Cellos' and select the 'Cellos Pizzicato' preset instead of the 'Cellos' preset that is selected, you get much closer. It seems like it has defaulted to the wrong setting. Your right though, there's definitely some verb there too. And also, if you then change your song key, the loop in the arrange window should change with it, but mine is not.
HOWEVER....If you drag a GREEN loop into an audio channel instead of a MIDI channel, it will create an audio file loop (like the blue loops). As far as I can tell, they sound exactly as they should, and they do change keys. Still though, very strange. Perhaps tis a bug??

  • Why audio sounds different in the Mountain Lion over 10.6

    Hi
I just upgraded my system OS 10.6.8 to the latest 10.8.4, and I found that audio on the 10.8.4 sounds different.
I did some tests and I can say that audio when listening on the 10.8.4 has less bass content and the hi-mids are more agressive.
I running the audio studio on my Mac Pro and this was a big dissapointment for me.
Also I rendered audio file from Logic Pro 9 on the both system and they are the same, but when you listening on the 10.6.8 it sounds correct while on 10.8.4 sounds different. I have the same audio drivers from RME Fireface 800 on both systems. In tests I used identical Logic arrangement file on both systems.
I just don't like the sound on the new system at all. It is worse than it was on the 10.6.8.
I switched to the Snow Leopard again and I regret that I puchased your latest OS. Why it is done? Apple?

  • Audio sounds different since 8.1 update

My concern is with a HP Envy Touchsmart m6-k015dx Sleekbook. I don't use this laptop for too much because I mainly do light schoolwork on this and leave most of my other tasks to my more powerful notebooks. I first noticed something different since i left this at a friends house and his little bro managed to update this to windows 8.1. Luckily, none of my work was affected but i immiediatly noticed a difference in sound( i am very "attuned" to sounds i guess) and it just did'nt sound the same. I checked the settings and equalizers and everything was set exactly how i had it. I know the built in speakers are already bad but when i hook it up to speakers, it also sounds different and my friend agrees with me. When i check for driver updates, there are none. And recently(like 2 days ago) ill hook my speakers up and the song will play wierdly and start stuttering whenever heavy bass starts playing. I hooked my speakers up to my Envy 15 and Razor and i do not encounter this problem. Im wondering if it's just a driver needing an update or if my audio card is shot somehow. Pls. tell me i can fix this, i mean it's not that big a deal but i hate when things dont work!

  • Is it possible to group songs from different albums?

Can I create a copilation ALBUM out of songs from different albums, which are already in the iTunes Library (I mean without changing the album name for each song) ? Or, if possible, without making duplicates. It sounds more like linking songs together in compilation albums. Kinda like creating playlists that are actually albums... compilations. Is it possible?

In iTunes each track can only be in one album. If you want the same song to appear in multiple albums you'll need to make copies. An album in iTunes is any collection of tracks with the same album name and the same album artist (or marked as a compilation). Track order within an album is goverened by disc & track numbers.

  • Converted song sounds slower than original

I have a song in WAV format, and when I try to convert it using the feature in itunes to do so, the song sounds slower and the original and is listed as being more than 2 minutes longer than the original. I've never tried using the convert to MP3 function before, so I'm not sure where the problem might be.
What can I do to make it sound the same when I convert it to a different format?
      Mac OS X (10.3.9)

That might be a problem, since 96 kHz is a very high sample rate--great for recording, but not usually used for final export. Maybe iTunes doesn't recognize it.
I looked in the custom mp3 conversion options in iTunes. The highest bit rate listed is 48 kHz. So it may be that if you had iTunes set to for "auto" sample rate (the default setting, which is supposed to use the same sample rate as the original file), it couldn't actually make a 96 kHz mp3, and made a 48 kHz file but didn't cut out any samples.
Can you re-export the file from your recording software at either 44.1 or 48 kHz? If not, you could try using either QuickTime player or, better, an audio editing application (like Peak) to downsample your WAV.

    Hi Dennis!
I have a couple of steps for you to try in order to get those songs transferred to your iPod touch. First, make sure all of your software is updated with the latest versions. If the songs were downloaded from iTunes, you will also want to delete the songs from your library and then download them again from the list of past purchases on your iTunes account. An article about doing that can be found here:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If you try a sync after those two steps and are still seeing the issue, then I would like you to try syncing the iPod by setting it to manually manage. An article outlining more information on manually managing your iPod sync can be found here:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
If you are still having issues after that, I have another article that can outline some other reasons why your songs may not transfer to your iPod, and it can be found here:

  • Midi loops in browser sound different in arrange window controller messages

I have a problem with controller messages as well with fx
I audition a midi loop it has FX and then drag it to arrange window
sounds different, I know of ther is another topic about the FX,
But as well controller messages not being read right
say a Timpani loop, foot controller is not reading
so the timpani roll is gone

This is not a problem, it's intentional design.
The preview audio contains reverb for these instruments, because the sound is in context - it let's you hear it how you are typically going to use it, and use can use it as an audio loop without problems.
When you load it as MIDI, it does not add another reverb to the channel because it assume you are going to use a global reverb, rather than add individual reverbs per channel - this is the generally better way of doing it, and avoids new users having a hundred reverbs on individual channels when they only need one.
As for articulations switched by MIDI, the preview audio can contain only one sample, but if there are different articulations, they need to be played/switched accordingly.
It's not a bug, it's the way it works for flexibility in the main. You have to remember, that when stepping up from a entry-level program to a professional one, a lot of hand-holding that the entry level programs do is no longer there, and so you can feel like the pro version is "less good" than the entry one. This is not the case - professional users do not need hand-holding, and that generally gets in the way.

  • I upgraded iTunes and now my songs sound horrible - help!

I was prompted a couple of times to upgrade the version of iTunes that I have on my computer - I upgraded at least twice (if not three times). Recently I tried listening to some of my music from my computer by selecting songs from my iTunes library and the songs sounded horrible - the songs sounded like I was listening to a scratched up CD, but I know that isn't the problem because the CDs are fine and the songs on my iPod (which were never updated after I updated the version of iTunes) are fine. What's the problem and what can I do to fix this? Thanks!

have you tried working through the suggestions from the following document?

  • Can't burn with iTunes 8.2 or 9.0-- songs sound fuzzy

Recently, when i bought my iPod Touch, I was instructed to update to iTunes 8.2; upon doing so, I found I could no longer burn CDs; the songs all sounded fuzzy. Today, I updated to iTunes 9.0, and the same thing happened: the songs all sounded fuzzy on the burned CD.
    Other things you should know:
    (1) I tried to burn a CD using Windows Media Player; those songs sound fine. Thus, I have reasonable assurance the problem is with iTunes.
    (2) For some reason, I have no problem burning CDs with my laptop (which I also updated to iTunes 8.2).
Can someone help me out with this? (And please don't say to download it again. I downloaded 8.2 twice and now 9.0 once, and nothing has improved.)
Thank you for your anticipated assistance.
    MRD

Fuzz or static on iTunes-burned audio CDs can often be corrected by burning at a lower speed, such as 2x.
