Logic 8 hardware choice: iMac or MacBook Pro

I want to run Logic 8, but I can't afford a MacPro at the moment. My selections then become the iMac at either 2.4 or 2.8 at 4GB RAM or the MacBook or the MacBookPro.
I am a beginner with high ambitions so the ultimate in power is not needed. But I also don't want to unpower the hardware so that nothing but frustration results.
What do you recommend? Should I consider a notebook when compared to the iMAc if portability isn't an issue? If so, which one? And if you recommend an iMac instead, should I really pay for the 2.8. Finally, is a 20" screen OK, or will I wish I got the 24"? Lots of questions, but I am finding mixed responses to these when I ask around. Sorry if it's been asked a hundred times before.
Thanks in advance to all. Bob

While everyone has their opinion, this thread seems to be full of misinformation. For example:
"...If you can go for the 2.8 GHz iMac, you can get the 2X2.0 GHz Mac Pro, which is better..."
Why is a 2.0 dual processor Mac Pro better than a dual processor 2.4 imac? From a performance viewpoint, the core 2 duo imac should be better.
"...ok...imac doesn't have the expresscard expansion so only one firewire buss....will this be a problem for you???...who can tell...for me at the moment it's ok......i did, however, buy a fw800 drive for the extra speed only to discover that with my interface plugged into the fw400 port, the drive defaults to fw400
the imac is built componants of less quality than the mbp or mpro...again, don't know if this is a problem for ya.....i doubt that it's, in any way, shoddy
The imac and Macbook Pro are built from mostly the same components. If anything, the imac has a bit more room inside so things are not quite so crowded. Better for air circulation. It is a myth to think that the expansion card actually gives another Firewire bus. There is only one firewire bus on an imac or Macbook Pro. You can check it in system Profiler. So plugging more drives into the express card doesn't gain you anything except more ports. The only way to get firewire 800 drives to operate at full speed with FW 400 devices is to daisy-chain the FW 400 devices from the FW 800 drive and have NO FW 400 devices plugged in to the computer at all. I have tried this in numerous combinations and verified that this is true.
My advice (as a recent purchaser of an imac 24" 2.2 GHz and 3 Gig RAM) is to go for the imac. As a Logic beginner, it will be a while before you maximize its capabilities, and the price is right. Get a white refurb 24" and load it up with RAM and make some music. If you get good enough and start making some money with it, then consider moving up to the Mac Pro if you need it. It's over kill for you and your wallet for now.
That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it...

hardware test using an external optical device (iMac) on macbook pro 9 years old via firewire. What to do? and how to do it?
I thiunk the graphic card is defective and need to run hwt

    You don't.
Need a internal optical drive and the Hardware Test on disks is old and outdated anyway.
Your machine has lasted a long time, congratulations, they usually only last about 4-5 years.
They get clogged up with dust and overheat, kills the video card, there is nothing you can do as it's hardware damage over time.

  • IMac or Macbook Pro? Help

Okay, so I need a new mac. I run Logic Pro 8 on my 1.33gHz Powerbook G4 w/ 1.25GB RAM, and basically My computer is soo slow its affecting my creative juices. I Know I knwo... I should have upgraded a long time ago.
I am Debating Whether to get a new (24") iMac 3.06gHz w/4GB RAM to run Logic Pro, or a (15") Macbook Pro 2.8gHz w/4GB RAM?????????? I Use Logic mainly as a sequencer. Average: 30 Track Sequences, roughly 10 tracks playing simultaneously. I need to be able to record vocals with 4-6 effects (especially Pitch Corrections) in addition to the multi track sequences. It would also be nice to add new track sequences thru a MIDI keyboard with minimal latency on top of that.
So, Please Let me know which would you prefer. iMac or Macbook Pro, Pros and Cons. Incorporating Snow Leopard in the Answer is also very much appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance!

disagree - I own a macbook pro and a iMac. And the macbook pro's runs logic like ****. My iMac is over 2.5 years old and is much faster and more stable than the MBP. I never had system overload errors on my iMac. I get them every 5 min on my macbook, even on projects with 2 tracks sometimes. My mbp is the version before the unibody.
(Turn off the I/O Safety Buffer on the MBP)
Also the biuld in audio card of my mbp is noisy and create radom noise signal when nothing is played back. (maybe they changed it with unibody).
But the problems with the mbp are also happening when i use my duet.
The mbp are good notebooks and can run logic 8, but are far not as optimal as an iMac.
I couldn't disagree more. It's interesting to me how many people assume that if their setup behaves a certain way, then EVERY computer will behave that way. This is the wrong way to think about it and often not other peoples experience.
I have a MBP 2.33, 2 generations before unibody, and it smokes Logic. I have a test project with 16 automated space designers and 4 Sculptures, and they all can run simultaneously on a 64 buffer with absolutely no pops or drops. I know MANY people who run Logic 8 on laptops with awesome performance. If your MBP has a faster processor and as much or more Ram as your iMac, then there is something wrong with your MBP. In fact, I'm pretty sure that the iMacs and laptops share many of the same components.
I have a 24 inch cinema display, and when I'm home I plug my MBP into it, and have an awesome desktop with a big screen. Then I simply unplug and go. It's awesome.
To the OP: if you need portability, get a MBP! If you set it up correctly, you'll have awesome performance from Logic.
And yes, I have owned Powerbooks, iMacs, and Macbook Pros, and run Logic on all of them.

  • IMac or macbook pro? for architecture

Study architecture and work with autocad and 3dmax (and other Autodesk products), I want to know whether an iMac or MacBook Pro these programs work without problems, because most tells me it's much better version in the window, I saw another option for is there that allow the boot camp, but idk if diminish performance or would have any problem. Thanks and please I love apple products and I have a couple of them but not in this case and tried the mac and I need answers and considering what you'll use.

I agree the Mac is good for some many things especially for consumers and light business needs, ranked very highly but it's not for everyone and perhaps for what you require a more specialized Windows machine is better suited.
Windows 7 will get support until 2020, Apple tends to upgrade their OS X versions annually, so that's a slight drawback for someone who needs stability in their software amd investment.
The only somewhat 3D capable laptop Mac is the 15" MacBook Pro and it's video card isn't as powerful as PC models for specialized professional needs. Neither is the one in iMac for that matter as Apple customers have more or less gone for thinness, style and lightness verses uber performance, which mean thicker and heavier.
The MacPro hasn't seen a update in two years, PC's with Xeons have outstripped it for performance. Apple recent issues a press statement it's being pulled from European markets for not updating to meet new EU requirements (set nearly three years ago.)  So perhaps a powerful Mac tower is out and a PC one with Windows 7 is better suited to your professional needs at this time.

    http://www.cbscores.com/index.php?sort=ogl&order=desc
Also then comes the operating system and programs tailored for it, which you really would have to run Windows 7 on the Mac in Bootcamp, but may have issues etc for hardware compatability also problems with tweaking things and custom drivers etc., as Mac's are not generic PC's although they can run Windows 7 in BootCamp
I can make some suggestions for some uber PC machines for awesome professional results.
HP has a line of Elitebook 8770w Mobile Workstations with some truely awesome video cards for fast rendering speeds costing upwards anywhere up to about $6500 if you so need it, plus the displays are larger and  detailed.
Sager has some awesome machines anywhere from $2000-$5000
Dell has their Alienware series, but that doesn't sound so professional
Asus has their The Republic of Gamers line of powerful prebuilt desktops and laptops, but they all don't look like 3D gamers machines.
Not exactly as nice as a Mac for the thinness of hardware, but they are performance powerhouses for specialized needs, and they should come (request it) with Windows 7 Professional (so you can run XP programs too).
Windows 7 is not a bad operating system, everyone seems to love it, even Mac users like it.
It does need the services of a professional Windows geek to make sure it's crapware free and anti-virus installed, System Restore Disks and images made before being used online. I also suggest Deep Freeze if you really want a almost trouble free PC, a simple reboot resets the machine back minus any changes.
I hope this assists and perhaps you will consider getting a Mac or iPad for less intensive requirements.

  • What's the best way to share my Aperture and FCPX projects between an iMac and MacBook Pro?

    Greetings,
I own both an iMac and MacBook Pro and I'm interested in figuring out the best way to have access to my iTunes, Aperture and Final Cut Pro X files not only when I'm at home using the iMac, but when I'm out and about with the MBP.
I'm sure there are others among us who require a similar setup so I was hoping you guys could share with me how you solved this little problem, and also inform me of any potential negatives for your method so that I'm well prepared. Thanks.

Best is a subjective term, as it will ultimately come down to preference. The fastest however, would be to wait until they market has a few thunderbolt drives available for purchase...
But like the first poster stated, a firewire 800 drive, would be the more convenient choice for now. Or you could set the shared folder on your iMac to be avaible on your network and use it to allow your MBP to access it wirelessly.
Obviously whatever you change, just save it back to the same folder on the iMac. Keep in mind it will not be as fast as the first suggestion (unless it is a wired network), but may be usefull for smaller files.
However, you should have everthing backed up via an external drive, that is always useful...

  • Dragging from iMac to Macbook Pro

I'm trying to copy some files between my iMac and Macbook Pro using Finder. The files are both owned by the same user, and I'm dragging between identically named folders. The files do NOT exist on the MBP when I start this operation.
When I try this operation, the first thing that occurs is that I am asked to enter my password, which has never occurred before (I just replaced my old Macbook with the MBP, which is the only change since I last tried to copy files from one system to the other). Okay, maybe this is due to the fact that the user numbers don't match (I'm user 501 on the iMac, user 503 on the MBP thanks to a Migration Assistant battle), so I go ahead and enter my password.
The next thing that happens is I get a dialog that says "A new item named "blah" already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you're moving?" When I started the copy, "blah" did NOT exist on the MBP - it was created sometime after I began the copy. The file is empty on the MBP, so I click the Replace button.
I now get a new dialog that says "The operation can' be completed because an item with the name "" already exists." Note that the filename is apparently an empty string. At this point, I have no choice but to click OK. The copy is terminated, and I'm left with an empty file named "blah" on the MBP.

It turns out I can drag something from the remote system to the local system (i.e., Macbook Pro to iMac if I'm sitting at the iMac), but not from the local system to the remote system.

Can you do something about these problems
It's problematical that one can't communicate directly with Apple to resolve these problems

  • IMac and Macbook Pro no longer connecting to the Wifi?

    Hi there,
I've been in London this weekend, only to return home to find issues connecting to my wifi. Weirdly, it's only the iMac and Macbook Pro having trouble, everything else is connecting fine e.g iPad, Phone, Android Tablet etc.
I'm getting disconnected around every 20 seconds and cannot figure it out! It's so frustrating as I'm wondering if there's been an update released for OS X that it has downloaded recently? Especially seeing that when I run windows from bootcamp on my iMac, it doesn't disconnect. And I also don't believe it's an issue with the hub.
Has anyone got any suggestions? I've tried removing the network and re-adding, help for about an hour but still not much use.
    Thanks, Matt

  • How do I share my docs, pics, music from my iMac with macBook Pro?

New Apple user...finally ditched Microsoft. I have an iMac and macBook Pro. I want to share all my files between the two so any changes will reflect on both machines. I don't quite know how to get the information into iCloud. I use to use Google Drive with my pc but the account was compromised and I removed all data from it.  I am concerned about having all my stuff "out there" but I'm told it's secure. • HT1420 I have 5 computers already authorized with my Apple ID.  How can  I add one more.  My home has 1 IMAC, 2 Macbook Pros, 1 Ipad and 2 Iphones.  Why are you now limiting me to five computers on my Apple ID when I am clearly an Apple product supporter.

I have six products in my home.  I can only authorize five using my Apple ID.  All my products are Apple - 1 IMAC, 2 MacBook Pros, 2 Iphones and 1 IPAD.  This doesn't seem right - We are so Mac'd out in our home and yet we are now being limited to the number of products we can have using the same Apple ID.  Any advice as to how to find a workable soliution to this?
    Thanks

  • Imac and Macbook pro can no longer see one another

I'm not sure why, but all since I upgraded to Yosemite, I can no longer see my iMac on my Macbook Pro and vice versa. I could always see the computer that I needed to connect to in finder, or I could connect with my iCloud password. As of today, I can no longer access my iMac from my Macbook Pro and that's a problem. If someone could provide directions (dumbed down version) explaining how to connect the computers from scratch, I would greatly appreciate it. I am fine with setting it up again but I can't recall how I did it.  Thanks so  much. I did upgrade both my iMac and MacBook pro to Yosemite over the weekend.

My Imac and macbook pro stopped accessing my MP640 via the home wifi set up, so I sent all the canon software to the trash on both computers, thinking I should reinstall the software I got with the printer, but the software does not recognise os 10.7.5. • IPhoto not working after trying to share iPhoto between iMac and MacBook Pro

I tried to share my photos on both my iMac and MacBook pro. It deleted all my photos in my MacBook and now it won't let me even open iPhoto in my iMac and gives me the following message "You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
How do I rectify this? Purchase iPhoto from the App store?

What version of iPhoto do you have on each system?
It sound like you propbably have a newer version of iPhoto on the MBP - and thay you opened the iMac iPhoto library using the newer iPhoto - if you did you were warned that doing this would convert the library and that the older version of iPhoto could no longer open the library - the error message you list says that this is what you did
If you did the only options are to restore your iMac backup from before you converted the library, upgrade iPhoto on the iMac the same version you have on your MBP purchasing from the App store or use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to downgrade your library

By default, OS X does NOT come with Java installed nowadays. You need to open the Java Preferences app found in Utilities; when you do that the first time, it will inform you of the fact and offer to install the product for you.
Afterwards, due to a major security issue we had back in the first quarter of the year, the plugin is disabled by default. You need to revisit the Preferences and enable manually. It will auto-disable if unused in awhile.
Lastly, you may have to adjust which Java instance is being used, the 32-bit or the 64-bit. Default is 64-bit, but some applets crash & burn or outright refuse to run in such a platform. You can prioritize which version you prefer by dragging on top in the Preferences.
