Logic 8 - Pro Tools - and back again... suggestions?

Hi all,
I have the opportunity to add real drums, recorded at a really nice, professional studio, to my songs. I have a modest home studio centered around Logic and live drums just aren’t a reality for me at home.
This studio only runs PT. In the past I’ve moved from format to format by bouncing all the audio tracks from bar one / beat one (because I’ve never been able to just import the raw audio files into the new app and have them line up) to new audio files and importing them into the new project. This can be very time consuming, so here’s my question:
Is there any faster / better way to get from platform to platform? It seems this "OMF" thingy might be of some help but I've never used it before and I know very little about the way PT works. I know that I can just mute the sequenced drums I already have and bounce a stereo mix for the drummer to play to in the PT session. It’s getting all those track of drums out of PT and back into Logic at home that I’m wondering about.
Thoughts? Musings?? Anecdotes? All help is appreciated, and thanks a lot!!!

To expand on David's excellent advice...
Bounce a stereo track from within Logic, that your drummer will play to. Just make sure the bounce starts at bar 1, beat 1, as indicated in the locator boxes from the bounce window.
Note the tempo of your song.
In a new Pro Tools session, set the tempo the same, and import the stereo track you bounced from Logic. Make sure it is placed at bar 1, beat 1. (I believe it imports to this location by default).
Record your drums.
When finished, consolidate the files (option/shift/3 in PT). These will create contigous audio files that start from bar 1, beat 1. Just make sure you select ALL the drum tracks, and that the start point in PT's locator window is at bar 1, beat 1.
You may also need to Export the drum tracks, if they were recorded to the studio's HD. After consolidating, hit command/shift/K. This will bring up a navigational box, asking you where you want these newly consolidated audio files to go. Select your external drive.
When you get back to Logic, simply import all the drum tracks. If you took several takes, utilizing PT's playlists, you'll notice that PT puts a 1 after the names of the second playlist, a 2 after the third playlist, etc...
So you'll have sometng like Kick (take 1), Kick.1 (take 2) Kick.2 (take 2), etc...
You can then import all these audio files into Logic, placing them at bar 1, beat 1.
If you want to sift through the seperate drum takes, put each take into a folder. Do a search here, as that method of comping drums from wihin Logic has been discussed in deatail many times here.

Pro Tools and FCP

Hi All
Anyone doing the roundtrip from FCP to Pro Tools and back again regularly? Is it as easy as an exported OMF to PT and then an exported final audio track in the desired format back to FCP to be synched with the video?
My organization is changing from Pyramix to PT, and the aforementioned workflow is what we have used with Pyramix, will that also work in PT?

Unnecessary nowadays for ProTools. It was the best way to get your audio, with your levels and pans and keyframing, to ProTool prior to FCP 6. But FCP 6 and now 7 have a more robust OMF that includes those. Now it is more used for Avid to FCP, or FCP to After Effects, or FCP to Avid...stuff like that.
There still remains that 2GB file size limit...just FYI.

A very interesting article Ken, especially the comments about compound clips within compound clips.
I've never experienced the horrific problems some folk have claimed but then I never put compound clips within compound clips.
In fact, until today I had never made a compound clip!

I bought Logic Studio from a pawn shop with Pro Tools and an iLok. It didn't include the serial numbers, which I thought were on the iLok. Is their any way to us this as an upgrade from like eBay?

If it sounds fishy, it probably is. Serial numbers from eBay typically don't work, because they are stolen, reused, etc. Logic Pro has nothing to do with iLok. And Apples doesn't offer cross-grades or upgrades anymore. If you want their software you go to the Mac App Store application and buy it. That's the only way.

Hi there, I want to installed Logic Pro 8 ( an upgrade version ) on my Macbook Pro with OS 10.8.2 and when I click on the installer on the DVD, the message is : You can’t open the application “LogicStudio.mpkg” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. Is that mean that it is no compatible ? what can I do ? Thanks.

I had this issue as well.
Check your Logic 8 packaging and see if you see "Universal Binary" written on the back or spine of the box.
Logic 8 in later releases was both PowerPC and Intel supported. However I get the error "cannot run PowerPC applications" on OS 10.8 on my new MacBookPro.
The cause of this is most likely that the installer was a PowerPC application, and Apple assumed at the time you could just run Rosetta for the installation.
Solution: install Logic 8 on an older Mac, run a Timemachine backup of your mac, then plug your Timemachine harddrive into your new mac and run Migration Assistant (Under Utilties)
Works perfect, even the plugins and Apple Loops carry over. It works 100% perfectly good. If you have the "Universal Binary" version there is no need to buy Logic 9.
I wasn't really "wow'd" with the new features of 9 and thought I would hold off until 10 to upgrade. This was 3 years ago. I still use Logic but it's amazing how cutting edge it used to be, and how far Pro Tools and Cubase and FL studio have come in the mean time.

Well, how have to determined no signal is being recieved to your mac?
Have you got something that shows the actual signal? Or have you just been trying to control a VST? What software are you using by the way?
I personnally went with a AKAI MPK25, because it's made already mapped for logic & ableton etc, so it just makes things incredibly easy.
I would suggest you return it if you can as a dead unit & perhaps look at something else a bit easier?
Otherwise, if you just want to get this working we can have a look a bit deeper.
And driver? OS X driver?

Yea I am. I deleted Logic Pro 9 and moved the App to the Trashcan like normal. Then when I go to install it, it says its already Installed. When I do this with other apps; it works fine, the install thing comes back up like it should once you have deleted the app

M-Audio Fast Track USB interface not compatible with Logic Pro X and Yosemite

Hello All!
I've been trying to simply record some guitar and vocal tracks onto the latest version of Logic Pro X. It worked before I downloaded the update of Yosemite, however now, I can't find a solution to my problem. I've tried everything! Installed new drivers onto the M-Audio and even tried to search for a later update of Yosemite. I have read a few things online about how Yosemite doesn't accept 3rd party drivers. So any USB plugged in to the macbook/mac that isn't mac based it doesn't accept.
Please can someone help me solve his issue!

I know many, many of us who are running things just fine.
I have to be really honest with you Ben and say... Where are you getting that idea from because it simply isn't so.....
I have a quite large client list of Logic users from all over the world... and of those that have attempted to use Logic Pro X and Yosemite together... over 80% have had to revert back to a previous configuration because of performance and/or stability related issues...
I personally, have on test here at the studios... 7 different Macs ranging from 2010 Mac Mini i7 Servers to 2011 32GB 3.4Ghz iMacs.. to a maxed out 2013 i7 MBP to a top of the line 2014 Mac Pro and all have demonstrated issues regarding performance and stability with LPX and 10.10.x using a variety of different Audio/Midi interfaces, all of which have supposedly 10.10 compatible drivers... and all of which have no such issues running LPX under Mavericks...
Just a quick scan across the various forums.. indicates that very few people are successfully running LPX under Yosemite without performance problems.... so that's why I am asking where you are seeing 'many many people" because I am just not seeing that myself...

How to uninstall Logic Pro 8 and Reinstall Logic Pro 7.2?

For numerous reasons I'd like to uninstall Logic Pro 8 and return to Logic Pro 7, the reasons for which I'd rather not discuss, as I'd like to focus on the reinstallation task.
Apple states that Logic Pro 7 still functions, but this is not entirely correct. Since many instruments were replaced, the complex 50-track songs that I painstakingly mixed on pure LP7 (prior to the upgrade) now sound completely different in LP7 post-LP8 install (as well as LP8 as you can imagine). It seems that the levels are actually different on some of the EXS and other instruments. Yes, Apple says they are richer and better, but I really don't care. I am in the middle of a CD and need to return to the state I was in prior to the upgrade.
Ultimately I'd like to reinstall Logic Pro 7 and/or its content in order to get all of my original instruments back.
Does anyone have a procedure for this? Should I uninstall Logic Pro 8 and then perform a complete reinstall of Logic Pro 7 following Apple's procedure? Or should I simply use Pacifist to replace the content files that were replaced? Will any of my preferences (plug-in settings) be lost during a reinstall? Should the rest of Logic Studio be uninstalled as well?

I just spoke to Apple and they recommended an "Erase and Restore" of the entire system, and a reinstall of Logic 7 in order to get me back to where I was - do you agree? *Yes, that is the preferred method but only if you are willing or in a position to start from scratch i.e re-installing all 3rd party apps, hardware drivers ect. Remember to back up all your important files.*

I purchased Logic Pro 9 and now want to put it on a new machine

I purchased Logic Pro 9 and now I cannot download it on to another computer. I do not want to purchase Logic Pro X. I chatted with someone in tech support and they confirmed that I could no longer download from iTunes. Does anyone know how to copy a program to disc and transfer to another computer? Any other suggestions?

Sorry, Apple Support are wrong and Bluebury is right.I'm looking at all my app purchases right now on my friends machine. He logged out of his iCloud and I logged in under my account name and I can see (and install if I wanted to) any of the apps I have purchased. This includes Logic 9.
You did buy Logic 9 through the app store didn't you, meaning, it wasn't the DVD boxed set?
Make sure you are logged in with your iCloud account, select iTunes Store, select 'Home' for your account. On the right hand side of the screen you will see Quick Links and under this 'Purchased'. Click Purchased and Logic should be in there.
The Apple support person either does not know what they are talking about or was confused about buying Logic 9 from new.

Has anyone ever synced LP8 and PT Le together? I would like to record vocals in PT 8 and use LP 8 for midi. Logic has a lot of plugin capabilities which I would like to use.

Do you mean plugins as in "virtual instruments"?
I think that would be problematic and unnecessary. Consider recording everything in Logic then bounce the files out as audio, import into Pro Tools and mix there.
There is no difference in recording quality between the applications.
