Logic 9.1.3 and M-Audio 1814

Im about to go on tour and i want to use my 1814 to out put 3 sets  of stereo outs on stage one stereo 1/2  for Drums and stereo 3/4 for Keyboard parts and stereo 5/6 which i can select in  logic on the tracks but i don't seem to know where to plug the cables in at the back  of the Firewire 1814, i only see 1/2, & 3/4 as outputs... is it the Spidif cables that come separately with the 1814 i have to connect and then plug RCA cables to get the audio out?? is this the 5&6 output channels? im assuming but im not sure if this is the case can anyone enlighten me here need to get his right before i go on the road or may be forced to get the Fast track Ultra which im sure has 1/2,3/4,5/6 obviously at the back of that interface....

I have similar issues here aswell. My audio wether recorded or imported never sync in time with the arrange window. This makes editing a real problem, any thoughts???
This is a different issue, you need to start your own topic, more people will see it and you will stand a better chance of finding a solution.

• Logic i/o midi AND audio?

im trying to use the Logic i/o plug in , not sue if im doing it right?
I have a sound module thats going into my 828mk2 inputs (11&12) and midi set up.
I can play the module fine from Logic but i thought that when you used the i/o plug in you could set up ONE track to use (like a internal plug in) that became the midi and the audio in order to record the track?
Do i have to record on a MIDI track the part from the module and then use a different audio track to capture it?
Im sure once i used a instrument track with the i/o on it and it became a midi/audio track all in one for outside gear? so i could record/midi all within the one track?
Am i being stupid?

so how do i use the external instrumnet and the i/o together?
External instrument on the instrument slot on a software instrument channel. This handles both MIDI and audio routing. What do you want to use the I/O plugin for? If you want to route to external hardware, then put the I/O plugin on one of the FX inserts on that software instrument channel.
Can i make my hardware become like a VST? and if using both utilities can i render a file to audio like i can a vst?
No, you have to record it in the conventional way.
or does it have to be real-time bounce only?
Yes, external instruments have to be played in real-time. Logic cannot yet speed up the universe to perform faster than realtime bounces - at least, not in Logic 8...

• Installing Logic and the audio interface

I will finish reading all the manuals one day soon… but meanwhile, and because I haven’t found anything on the subject yet, can anyone please tell me if I should I install Logic first and then install the Audio Interface (MOTU 828 Mk3), or should it be the other way around? Or is it of any difference??
(I know with Cubase u must install the Audio interface first – but that’s a totally different scenario)
Thanks

Install both, in whichever order you prefer, then restart and configure *Audio MIDI Setup*, and/or any dedicated MOTU software (drivers, control panel) and Logic (audio and MIDI preferences/settings).

• LOGIC STUDIO AND M-AUDIO PROJECT MIX

Hi guys,
I purchased a new imac yesterday, 2.4ghz intel core duo with 4gb of ram and 320gb hard drive.
I also have a m-audio project mix which I bought around 4 months ago. I used to use this on my PC with cubase, however I cant get the project mix working at all now. I have of course ensured switched to logic mode lol.
I'm also using mac os x 10.5.2 and downloaded the update for logic pro 8 as well, I believe its 8.0.1
I installed the beta version drivers from m-audio website, which appears to work. I switch on the project mix, double click the m-audio firewire from my apps folder and thats ok. If I switch off the project mix theres a pop up which then says project mix not found so i'm guessing my mac is recognising the hardware. Also when I switch the MIX on and check the audio midi setup from utilities it is showing in there also.
On logic i have set the preferences/audio correctly i think. The core audio check box is ticked, the device states project mix multichannel, I/O buffer 256 and 24 bit recording is enabled.
When I go to preferences/control surfaces/setup and try scanning though nothing is found! When logic is opened none of the sliders on the project mix flick to start as they would with cubase and none of the transport buttons etc work! im getting really frustrated lol
any help would be really much appreciated
thanks for your time
phil

Based on the fact that I don't see it listed under Preferences>Control Surfaces>Setup>New>Install and the MAudio website says that, in the case of Logic, "DAW software must support Logic Control, Mackie Control, or HUI protocols" here http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/ProjectMixIO-main.html , I suspect that you will have manually add a Mackie Control/Logic Control in order use the Project Mix with Logic. Just set the input and output ports to the control i/o on the Project Mix. Or teach the Project Mix everything you want it to do manually under Preferences>Control Surfaces>Learn.

• Are Logic's instruments and effects Audio Units yet?

I quote from the logic manual: +"Audio Units is the standard Mac OS X format for real time plug-ins. It can be used for audio effects, software instruments, and Generators. The Audio Unit format is incorporated into the operating system, and installed Audio Unit plug-ins can be simultaneously accessed by all applicable programs. Logic Pro supports all Audio Unit format plug-ins."+
If this is the case, it seems odd to me that the "audio effects, software instruments and Generators" that come with Logic are not Audio Units (or weren't in Logic versions < 8).
"Why do I care?" you might ask? Well, mainly because I'm interested in using different Audio Unit hosts -- specifically, I'm playing with "live coding" (see www.toplap.org), and the instruments and effects in Logic would be wonderful to be able to live-code to.
I just scanned through the manual (it's nice that it's posted), but it mainly focuses on the Audio Unit host features of Logic, and doesn't mention the components.
Can anyone answer whether this decision has been changed yet?
thanks!
dylan

You're confusing an API with a set of Plug-ins. Yes, Logic's plug-ins are all AU's. They all conform to the AU specs. However, they are exclusive to Logic. To believe that the plug-ins will ever be available outside of Logic is more folly than anything else. It would go the same for any DAW. Logic is no exception to the rule.

Can anyone tell me what's going on ............!?!?
"When I try to record in some audio and press "R" it chnages to the letter "P" and no audio is coming through ?!?"

This is because you have Punch on the fly enabled under Options (top menu)>Audio>Punch on the Fly.... signified by the letter P instead of the letter R

• M- Audio 1814 Ouput Question

Hello there,
I have M-audio 1814 and apogee mini-me. I cant´see 1814 in my preferences window. In Audio Driver section, there is only built- in audio and apogee mini-me. I use also logic pro 8 and there it works fine. Any ideas?
-Janne-

Hi,
I used to have M-Audio in my workplace...but after having so many problems...and having the techs contradict their own advice...I packed the M-Audio products and bought other stuff (Digidesign).
They "repair" by replacing with new boxes...and the WORST of their problems has always been their software DRIVER implementations...I have no clue why they think replacing hardware when the SOFTWARE is the problem...will fix it.Someone needs to rethink their customer support solutions.
The last straw was when they blamed ProTools(made by AVID,their new owner) of my particular problem, after I had told them I was NOT running ProTools...Again...why are they blaming or pointing their finger at something that has NO bearing on the problem...I gave up at that point.
So,after my illustrious rant,I would recommend you walk,no better yet RUN and get another brand of audio interface. And don't look back,or you might turn to salt...(sorry for all you religoius types out there for the reference).

• M-Audio 1814 FireWire issue

I've got my M-Audio 1814 plugged into the back of my Mac Pro with a 6 to 9 pin FireWire cable. Whenever I plug in any other kind of FW peripheral, my box starts freaking out and my sound cuts in and out. I have the latest drivers installed but can't figure out what else I should do. Any ideas?

Yes, according to MAUDIO Drivers @ http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support&tab=driver&serie_ID=2&PID=3dd58569d8 828cee4e812013e47dbb55&OS=77#tabs
Your audio device has been supported throughout Mac OS 10.5.2/.3/.4/.5 and now Mac OS 10.5.6 with the MAUDIO Drivers. The thing of it is, the Mac Pro (Early 2008) have been around all that time and has supported Mac OS 10.5.2/.3/.4/.5 and now supports Mac OS 10.5.6. So, bugs and issues have been worked out throughout all those MAUDIO driver updates for the Mac Pro (Early 2008). I am certain that the driver would be more reliable from MAUDIO for Mac OS 10.5.5 on a Mac Pro (Early 2008) 8 Core 3.2 GHz or 8 Core 2.8 GHz. The Mac Pro (Early 2009) was only just released with a customized version of Mac OS 10.5.6 only for the new Mac Pro (Early 2009). Whether or not MAUDIO provides the driver support reliably for the customized version of Mac OS 10.5.6 only for the new Mac Pro (Early 2009) is an expensive question to answer. So, the MAUDIO drivers are suited better for the Mac Pro (Early 2008) model. The hardware has been around longer and I have had no issues with my system for Apple Logic Pro and other audio production software on my Mac Pro (Early 2008) 8 Core 3.2 GHz. Besides, you won't need to deal with issues to do with using a 6 to 9 pin FireWire cable on the Mac Pro (Early 2008). They provide two firewire 400 and two firewire 800 ports.

• Logic Pro 7.2 and Tascam FW-1884 Not Working

I recently upgraded to Logic Pro 7.2 and I'm using a Tascam FW-1884 as my audio interface / Control Surface. Everything was working fine in 7.1.1, but now it doesn't work correctly. When I press buttons and faders on the Tascam I see MIDI information changing in Logic, but not in any of the correct places. When I click on the screen controls in Logic the Tascam does reflect the same on the board, but not the other way around? I updates the Tascam Plug-In (.bundle) file, the Control Panel, and even the Firmware. Still does not work. The faders go up on boot-up and down when I quit the program, but that is it. Any help would be greatly appreciated? I'm using a Mac G5, dual 2.7ghz processors, and 2.5 gigs in RAM. My gut is telling me it's something with the upgrade, but maybe others have resolved the problem without reprogramming every control one by one.

Mr. Walden,
I recently switched to Macintosh and am learning to use Garage Band. I have an 1884, as do you, and I plan to invest in Logic Express. Do you have any comments or suggestions concerning the marriage between Logic and the 1884?

• Logic 9.1.5 and Lion. Interface unresponsive.

I'm experiencing a very strange issue with logic 9. The interface becomes unresponsive, I can't click on any buttons in plugin windows / transport bar / mixer page.... anywhere while the project is playing. The keyboard is equally unresponsive i.e. I can't stop with space bar etc. The clicks / keystrokes are being recognised by them system as after a while, usually about 5-10 seconds, the messages get throughout to logic. If a 'stop' message get though from the keyboard or transport bar stop button, as soon as the project stops... I can see all the clicks/keystrokes in the buffer all get executed at once in a bulk dump, which can be in the hundreds of commands if I get pareticulary frustrated. This is not a problem with overloading the audio engine. My quad core mac is only showing 1 or 2 notches of activity on all cores in logics system performance meter and activity monitor shows I'm only using %10 of available CPU. The rest of the system is unaffected. Safari / Mail etc work as usual. Closing any other open apps doesn't help. It happens on my MOTU ultralite and Apogee Duet. It happens at any I/O buffer setting and any size reasonable size project. I have one open now with 15 tracks and about 20 or so plugins, my mac should barely even register this on the performance meter.
Other users are reporting the same issues here and note the Logic 7's interface is near instantaneous on the same system.

Anyone have any ideas?

I was joking... sorry for my english
anyway: I'm running a top of the line Imac, Mac Os 10.7.1 (that came preinstalled) and Logic 9.15. a full Apple rig... It's not unrealistic to expect a normal performance. IMO it's a little sub-par.
Regarding Logic, the last thing I want is they make things "simpler"... It ussually means less options. If I'd want a simpler interface and less options I'd go with protools in a breeze as it's the de facto standard and it's a lot simpler.  If somebody wants even simpler things Garage Band is the way to go...not Logic.  Why people don't ask for a more complex GB instead of a simpler Logic?. The program has TONS of places to improve: PDC is a mess, there are LOTS of bugs, and I can think not less than 20 real improvements. None of them makes things simpler. IMHO it has to be professional, not "simpler". Playing piano is very simple, but it takes time and effort to master it.  I don't agree with this childist society thinking that everything has to be so simple that any ignorant can drive it. This is a professional tool for professionals, or it should be.
That said, I also like the new features in Lion. Problem is: I use my machine for work not for some eye candy. If that were the case I'd buy an Ipad.
regards

• Logic Pro 8 Crashes from Core Audio - Tried Support Info

This is my first question but I've been a Mac user since 1993. I have a MBPro 2.16 with 2GB ram. I have Logic 6.4 installed and it has been working well with the USB dongle. My factory HD was only 100GB so I just upgraded to a 500GB hybrid drive. I have Logic Pro 8, NI Komplete 5, Sampletank 2XL, MOTU Mach 5 and several other plugs that work fine on my G5 Dual 1.8. I upgraded the HD on the laptop so my Logic setup couuld be portable for use at my job as a band director.
I installed the new HD in an OWC external case. I started with a clean install of 10.5. The laptop still had the latest version of 10.4 (11?) as the OS so I wanted to start from Panther. After the fresh install of 10.5 I restarted from the external drive and had my settings transferred to it. Everything worked fine with either drive as the startup device.
I then installed all my music software from the original DVDs ending with Logic so it would see all the plugins on it's initial start up. I then ran software update several times until no new updates were found. I had no problems registering the plugs or getting them to work independently of Logic. I then transferred the new drive into the MBPro as the primary drive.
When Logic starts it crashes when Core Audio is initialized. The program never did authorize a single plugin as i never makes it to the setup program.
I have:
1. Started Logic with the Control key and it works fine (with no plugs or driver functions). The support documentation offers that help but does not specifically mention what to do afterward to get to full functionality.
2. I have tried to access the Audio Units Mamager in the Preferences but noting happens when I select that item (Tried many times)
3. The Support documents mention a key command that will select the AU Manager but there are no keys assigned and the Key Commands window will not let me add any so forcing Logic to initialize Core Audio has been a bust.
4. I noticed the mention in one of the support docs that there might be an issue with the language selected and made sure engligh was at the top of that list.
5. I have removed all the plugs from the library folder and tried to start without them to test for a conflict with one of the plugs.
6. Today I tried reinstalling Logic (over the old copy) with no change.
I'm at a loss of what to do next. Does the Core Audio need to be upgraded somehow seperately from the OS? Could the old version of Logic be causing problems? I've tried starting the 6.4 and it hangs at the Initializing Core Audio also when started from the new drive. Could the Hybrid drive be an issue? Thank you in advance for your help.

Pancenter - You hit the nail on the head. I had not heard about the Rewire conflict. As I was installing all of my music software I discovered a Digi/Avid extras disc that came with my Digi 003R. I had not intalled that originally when I installed Protools LE so I went ahead and added it as I upgraded to Protools 8. I believe the Propellerhead software came from there. Removing those files freed up Logic. Everything verified/loaded properly except the MOTU Mach 5 and all of my Bias Peak plugs. I belive the Bias plugs work fine with my G5 in my home studio but I use those more for mastering than music creation so I may not have needed them in Logic. I will troubleshoot those in the Macbook tonight. Thanks so much for your help.

• Logic 7.1.1 and MIDEX8 USB MIDI Interface

Anyone had experience using the Yamaha/Steinberg MIDEX8 USB MIDI Interface with Logic? I've just moved from the PC to Logic on the Mac and since I already own the MIDEX8 I wanted to check first to see that it worked well with Logic before trying to install it. I was advised by the store who sold me the Mac that this would work OK, but was also was advised to get the M-Audio MIDISport 8x8USB as a better choice.
Thanks in advance.

• Routing Sound Output  - M-Audio 1814

Hello,
Just got a Mac Book Pro and am using an M-Audio 1814 as my sound card. The 1814 is connected to my stereo via s/pdif, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to change the output in the system preferences so sound from the web, itunes etc. comes through the s/pdif output rather than the analog channels.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Problem solved...this was the answer for future folks in need:
In the FW 1814 control panel set the the Digital Port Selection to SPDIF
Set the SPDIF input port to the desired selection
Then go into you computers HD and go to Applications>utilities> Audio Midi Setup
Mske sure you are in the Audio Devices window and click configure speakers
Set left front to 5 and set right front to 6, then click apply down below
