Logic 9.1.6 and the Apogee Ensemble

Has anyone had any issues with updating to 9.1.6 and the Apogee Ensemble interface?

Yes.  I have just gone through two Apogee Ensembles and unfortunately I don't think they like Mountain Lion very  much.  I wish I could get a refund, but I went through 6 MONTHS of tech support before getting this replacement unit and it's still having issues on my two computers running ML.
The issue on both my computers is that Maestro 2 often will not recognize the Ensemble is connected.  You have to turn it off and on and then restart the computer before it recognizes.  As well, sound will sporadically drop out and the Ensemble needs to be restarted.  Also, the Ensemble has on occasion crashed and holding down the power button for several seconds is the only way to get it to turn off and on again.
BIG headache.

  • Logic Mics, Aggregate Devices and The Input Issue

There is a lot of discussion about Logic's inability to accept simple microphone inputs, and I ran into this for two frustrating DAYS of trying all the things in the Logic Express 8 Docs to fix it—to no avail.
But now it is solved, so I'm trying to create a DEFINITIVE list of steps and principles here so others may quickly blast past this issue.
The equipment I have seems to be emblematic to the problem. The Blue Snowball is one of those USB mics that simply doesn't automatically show up in Logic's Preferences > Devices > Core Audio >Device list. The fix for this is never mentioned in the Logic manual or Getting Started docs that I can find. There is a passing reference on page 100 that is virtually zero help, and does not bother to mention how this Prime Gotcha can bring you to your knees.
Principle #1: Logic uses the Preferences > Devices > Core Audio >Device (list) process to identify which microphone you can record with. The list has to have in it an entry that makes sense for both the incoming audio and the playback path that Logic uses to feed earphones or an external monitor.
Normal items on that list look like this:
    Built-in Output/Line Input
    Built-in Output/Digital Input
    Built-in Line Output/Input
    Built-in Line Output/Digital Input
    Built-in Digital Output/Line Input
    Built-in Digital Output/Input
The Built-in Output is the computer’s inner speaker or headphones. The Built-in Line Output is the computers stereo jack for feeding to an amplifier. The Built-in Digital Output is the fiber optic feed that can also feed an amp with up to six parallel audio channels (okay, 5.1 channels).
Nothing on that list will show a fully functional USB microphone that is being viewed on the computer’s System Prefs > Sound > Input page, even though the metering dots there show that the computer sees a live, active microphone.
Selecting the Mic in the Sound prefs page does nothing to pass it on to the Logic > Preferences > Devices > Core Audio >Device list of selectable items. This is frustrating, since GarageBand sees the live mic without any problem, but GB is a simpler program that has fewer options while Logic has many other potentials, so a one-size-fits-all solution may not be its best default setting.
To get the mic into Logic, you have to go into the Audio MIDI Setup utility program where a peculiar option appears that is called “Aggregate Device”.
This keyword is not found in the Mac docs, and understanding it seems to be a big secret. Even the Audio MIDI Setup help page will show you how to find it, but not how it works or how to use it for Logic. Ahem.
You open Audio MIDI Setup and under its header bar Audio is only one item, sure enough, Open Aggregate Device Editor. That opens a window that has two sections, an upper window with Aggregate Devices / In / Out across its top, and a lower window that shows all the options that the computer is aware of. The lower window is called “Structure:” and columns show Clock / Use / Audio Device / In / Out / Resample.
A default item “Aggregate Device” shows in the top panel, and you can add others and double click on one to change its name. You can make many variations here.
By default these will be present:
    Built-in Line Input
    Built-in Digital Input
    Built-in Output
    Built-in Line Output
    Built in Digital Output
At the bottom of this list any other audio input devices that are plugged into the computer should show up. If they can be seen in the System Prefs > Sound > Input page, they’ll be here, too.
When I plug my Blue Snowball USB mic into the computer, it shows up here as Blue Snowball.
You create an Aggregate Device by clicking on your sound source, in my case, the Blue Snowball, then adding one or more other options.
When you click the Use check box for any entry, it pops to the top of the list.
Principle #2: An Aggregate Device is used by Logic to “see” both an audio input and an audio output path at the same time. The Device you’re creating at this point must include an input Audio Device AND at least one Output item to be fully functional for Logic. A Help page in Audio MIDI Devices called “Combining multiple audio devices” explains this in bare bones, but you can’t see that help page unless the Audio MIDI Devices utility is open.
In my case, I’ve checked the Blue Snowball and Built-In Line Output, so I can use that combo in Logic to define where the mic is coming from and where the Logic audio output should go to my line-input amp and speakers.
In the Audio MIDI Setup utility, simply selecting the Blue Snowball as the “Default Input:” device and/or the “Properties For:” options shows that the Audio Output area of the page has this cryptic message: “Output is not supported.”
At this point, you’re almost ready to go, and you can close the Audio MIDI Setup utility. But there is at least one more “gotcha” to conquer.
Principle #3: Logic ONLY looks for its list of usable Core Audio Devices when it starts up. If you have it open right now, all the choices made for Aggregate Device will not show up as selectable. Save any work in Logic, shut it down, then boot it up again.
Now you can use Logic's Preferences > Devices > Core Audio >Device list to see your Aggregate Device. I’ve named mine “Snowy Line Out” to trigger my recognition of what it contains. Another one is called “Snowball + Line + Digital” and it has both line and digital outputs aggregated to the Snowball mic input.
You can make one in the Aggregate Device Editor that combines a microphone plus earphones (Built-in Output) plus Line and/or Digital Outs, too. You'll have to switch among them in Logic as you work, but each will carry the live mic direct to recording.
I hope this gets you through the frustration of not knowing what to do when confronted with the lack of clear docs and complete steps to get a USB mic or other seemingly opaque input issue. Feel free to add to this so others in my former state of bewilderment can gain understandings.
If Steve Jobs were to encounter the level of opacity, ambiguousness and frustration that setting up a simple USB microphone can create in Logic, you can bet that the several programs and their intimate interdependency would be either automated or fully explained in the documentations that followed his fiery analysis of the issue.

I don't know of another way to get the Blue Snowball USB mic to show up in Logic. If you can do it without having to go through the Aggregate Device route, feel free to post here how to get that to happen.
I didn't have a different mic available when I started trying to do what seemed to be the simplest of things -- record and play back an audio track -- and nothing else seemed to work.
There are a lot of Aggregate Device threads around here, many associated with Blue Snowball, Blue Snowflake and other things, but none of them laid out the principles of how Aggregate Device Setup needs to work or what to do to force it into compliance.
As I said, the clues in the Logic docs and in-mac docs are minimalist, at best, none of them bringing instant head slaps of success readily.

  • What is the difference between logic studio academic version and the normal version ?

what is the difference between logic studio academic version from the other versions ?

No difference... the Academic version cannot be upgraded to the next major revision.
If you had putchased the Logic 9 academic version you get all the updates 9.0, 9.03, 9.1, 9.3...etc
When Logic 10 rolls around you would have to purchase the application at full price, your version isn't elgible for the upgrade price.
Same software as the retail version though.

  • I have an ipad2 and logic pro 9 but my iPads GarageBand exports but 1. Logic cannot find it and the files are hidden so I don't know where they are ,  I've looked all over my iTunes structure which is easy since I just installed everything and it's empty

So yea title says it all
Logic doesn't see the GarageBand files and neither do I .... So I reattempt saving it and my iPad sees the files there so .... They're there
But you shouldn't need GarageBand to access it on my Mac IF I OWN LOGIC PRO

    Hi
With your iPad connected, open iTunes & select the iPad
Select the Apps tab, and scroll down to File Sharing.
Select the GB songs you wish to get onto the Mac and click "Save to"
By default, these seem to go to <User> Documents, but you could save them anywhere (Check where you setup is saving them).
    Open Logic, and then File:Open
Navigate to wherever you saved your GB songs to, and select one. Open it
Logic prompts you to save this new project somewhere... done.

  • Apogee ensemble and logic studio

I got a new apple desktop pro quad 2.66 and Logic Studio.
I have been using a Motu 828mk11 and logic 7 pro.
I was considering using the Apogee Ensemble and was wondering if anyone using Studio has any luck with Ensemble and if they think the switch would be worth the investment.
I also Use an API A2D preamp with the digital outs.....any news on how that might work with Ensemble?
anyway, just a note, if anyone cares, the UAD Nevana X2 works really tightly with Logic Studio and its WORTH the purchase price. amazing.

If you use outboard gear for mix and processing i.e you route out your Software Instruments thru some of the Apogee outputs (analog/optical or digital), process them using some external analog or DSP processors and route back the processed sound to the Apogee Inputs ( i.e Logic Mix track ), then the mix may be different, rather than the Logic native Bounce.
If you use Logic bounce, then Apogee is just a monitoring device as was mentioned before. I agree if you have several devices and play same (previously) bounced Logic audio file thru the different devices they may sound different - this the test the audio engineers make in the laboratories.
Personally I own several devices and I prefer to use one for final mix monitoring (which is most "true" not "sweet or pumped"), some for recording, other for internal DSP processing, depends on the situation...

  • Musical Logic Pro Task Bar with Apogee Ensemble

1.)Since I installed the Apogee Ensemble unit, a musical note sounds when I start up my MAC, when I press the Start or Stop button in Logic Studio, etc. What option do I need to reset to turn this off?
2.) When I use Input 1 on my Emagic AMT Midi interface unit and press any key on the external MIDI keyboard, the screen starts flashing until I select the close song option. What feature is causing this, and how can I turn it off?
    Thank you

This was due to a bad fader on my Mackie MCU Pro. I installed this at the same time as the Apogee unit. Mackie sent me a new fader, and once I replaced this both problems were resolved.

  • The cable between the logic board and the 3G board  was removed can I convert it to a Wifi only?

I have a Ipad 2 3g. someone detached the cable between the logic board and the 3G board can I convert it to a Wifi only?

The ipads that have 3g have an extra section attached to the logic board by a glued on wire. I bought this at a tag sale. Someone was apparently trying to repair their iPad and they did not know that when you removed that glued strip attaching the 3g antenna to the logic board you would never be able to re-atach it again later. So basicaly my 3g logic board is now in two pieces. the main logic board with wifi and the cdma 3g antenna. Now their is no differnce between the logic boards in either wifi only or wifi and 3g devices. I attempted to restore the device with the ios for wifi only, because there are 3 different ios versions depending on if you have wifi only wifi 3g with SIM card, or wifi 3g cdma.

  • How do I get 5.1 optical out (DVD Player) into Apogee Ensemble?

This should be the simplest thing to do.
I've set the DVD Player prefs to Digital Audio out.
Plugged an optical cable from the out of the Mac Pro to the in of the Apogee Ensemble.
Opened Audio and Midi prefs and tried various logical settings. Opened Maestro and done the same there. Tried changing the clock to optical - nothing (but flashing light on Apogee).
It works fine in stereo through the Apogee connected just by firewire, but it's not what I had in mind...
Any help from someone who knows the Ensemble would be gratefully received.

Cig is right, I'm not seeing anything about your device that states it's 5.1 or DTS certified... also, if you are trying to use a commercial DVD, then you might also be running into DRM issues...
I think you are still leaving out part of your workflow here. I'm Understanding this: DVD Movie > DVD player.app > Digital Optical Audio > Apogee Ensemble > to what????
It should be: Stand alone DVD player > Digital Audio > Mac Pro > Sound App.
Yes, you can output with the Ensemble, but to what? this is meant more as a device to input audio, not to act as a reciever.
contact Apogee for confirmation on this if you like. there are other ways to playback the audio or inport the audio, so long as you own the copyrights, of course

  • Apogee Ensemble or Interface help

I have been looking to create a home studio. I'll be using a Macbook Pro and an iMac both with Logic Pro8. I have some very nice mics and a compressor but my main issue is a interface. I'd like to go with something that is firewire. I have fallen in love with the Apogee Ensemble but it is a little pricey and to be honest I am not that up on interfaces. All I know is that the pre's sound great. What would be a good alternative that would still have great sounding pre's but less of a price tag. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apogee in general have some of the best converters (the actual AD/DA that is). I can't speak for their Mic Pres because I don't have them, but I do use the Rosetta 800 and used to use the MOTU mentioned above, and to me the sound difference is astounding. The Ensemble uses the same converters as the Rosetta. It is worth the price, and I would not short change myself on the interface. If you like it and like its sound, then I would suggest waiting until you can afford it and get it, as opposed to getting something that you're not as in love with and feeling like you made a mistake.
Short of going to a Prism converter... Apogee is about as good as you're going to get, especially with the close integration within logic... but it's all a matter of taste and opinion.

  • StudioLive 16.4.2 or Apogee Ensemble?

Hello, friends! What would you recommend, the StudioLive 16.4.2 or the Apogee Ensemble? They are both around $1999, but the StudioLive 16.4.2 looks like it has more features and better preamps. What is the Ensemble better at doing than the StudioLive 16.4.2? Just trying to figure out which one to get. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
    James III

    Someone give a helping hand,
The iMAC 27" (mid 2011) OS X 10.9. update to 10.9.1 totally lost firewire connection between Studiolive 16.4.2.
1.) How to rollback or disable the OS X update?
2.) How to check the firewire connection abilty?

  • Apogee Ensemble vs Protool HD

They said we have no latency with protool HD because the card are done to send the audio signal right to the software. My question is: the apogee ensemble do the same or not because we have no driver for it, so the latency is like a protool HD not like the Le version with a buffer at 128 or 64.

I have a Metric Halo 2882 +DSP, and it is wonderful in this application.
Prior to getting my MH, I split my signals coming out of my preamps to an analog mixer.
Actually, I still use an analog mixer now, I just use the Metric Halo internal mixer to group which outputs go to which channels on my analog board.
    I love the setup.
The MH mixer (and recording) application is great.
I can use the MH DSP plug ins with so little latency as to be negligible for performers.
I highly recommend checking Metric Halo out, as if that weren't obvious!
And no, I am not associated with them in any way, other than being a pro who relies on their products daily.

  • Icons for both Logic 9.2.0. and 9.1.1.

When I upgraded to Logic Pro 9.2.0., it created a new icon for 9.2.0., as opposed to updating the previous version of Logic. This left me with two Logic Pro icons. Now that I have upgraded to 9.1.1., my original Logic Pro is updated, and the Logic Pro 9.2.0. is still there.
I assume I should just delete the 9.2.0., but why is the installer creating new icons.
Does the 9.1.1. update include everything in 9.2.0.?
    Thanks in advance.
