Logic 9 - Snow Leapord to Lion Compatability

I'm currently running Logic (32-bit) on an older Macbook Pro (Intel...about 3-years old) using Snow Leopard and am looking to upgrade to a new Macbook....which would come with Lion of course. I've hesitated upgrading my current mac to Lion because my system works fine and I've heard there are issues with Lion, but I need more horsepower.
Don't want to reload Logic, all my 3rd party plugins and recreate the wheel so my original thought was to clone my current drive over to the new mac, but thru other discussions on another board it's my understanding I can't do this because SL is not compatible with Lion in that fashion....and if I were to do this, Lion apparently would not be able to boot up. Furthermore, I'm told you can't even load SL onto a newer macbook pro and change the operating system. (the thought was to do this, clone my exist drive to the new macbook so everything works identically and then "upgrade" to Lion if need be....)
Three Questions:
1)      All I want to do is upgrade my machine and have everything the way it was w/o having to reload everything, creating aliases and recreating my current setup. Is this possible between my existing SL Macbook Pro and a new Lion equipped version. Don't want to put the $$$ down if it's going to be a major pain.
2)     I'm considering setting up Network Node between the two machines to get more horsepower between the two. This is the reason for upgrading to a newer MBP anyways....the older MBP doesn't have the memory to do much apparently....it bogs down with most software instruments. Does (would) the logic node work between these two machines running different OS's and/or is it even worth it? I've read pros/cons regarding network node, but have never used it myself.
3)      I'm currrently running in 32 bit and know 64 is out there. Is there any advantage to switch over if I bite the bullet?
Thanks in advance....

Hi There are several solutions for this: (but first make sure that all drivers, plugs and applications are Lion compatible. Download all updaters ready for the switch, and have them handy for the new setup.
A Start the new MBP in Target Disk Mode, connect over Firewire to the old one. Wipe the new Drive, clone the old one (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper). Do not restart the new Mac. Download the Lion Installer on the old Mac, run it but CAREFULLY select the new drive for the installation.
B Clone your old Mac to an external drive, startup from that drive, download Lion and install it on the External drive. Start the new Mac from the external, wipe the Internal drive and then clone the external to the internal.
C Download the Lion installer on your old MBP. Do NOT run the installer. Control click on the Installer (Show Contents) and find "InstallESD.dmg" (the installer itself) inside SharedSupport. Use Disk Utility to burn a DVD of the LIon Installer which you can then use to start and install on your new MBP after cloning. Start the new MBP in Target Disk mode (hold down T when you start it up), connect the 2 Mac's together with Firewire, wipe the drive on the new one and then clone (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) the old one over to the new one.
Restart the new one using the Lion Installer dvd that you made earlier (Hold down C on startup), and install Lion.
The main advantage of this method is that you end up with a boot disk for Lion that can be used anytime you need to start up the mac from a second source.

Logic node does work (with some restrictions covered in the manual), but you may do better to investigate the game-changing Vienna Ensemble Pro from VSL.

  • Difference between snow leapord and lion

Hi .. I am trying to analyse the wifi driver code for mac os x and I am not getting what is the exact difference between snow leapord and lion in driver side.. I could only find the differnce in framework of ioctl .. could anyone tell me what is the exact difference other than features.. i mean in driver code..
    Thanks in advance...

You can greatly reduce your level of concern, if you use an external drive to make a cloned duplicate of your current internal drive.  You can use Carbon Copy Cloner
    http://www.bombich.com
It seems to no longer be free (it was voluntary "donationware" before), but you can use it for free during a 30-day trial period.  A "clone" is an exact duplicate of a hard drive volume, such as your usual internal startup disk.  You can also use Disk Utility to make the duplicate, but using Carbon Copy Cloner is more straight forward.
Once you have the clone on an external drive volume, you can go to System Preferences Startup Disk pane and set the clone as the startup disk.  Restart from the clone to confirm it is working properly.  Once you are satisfied, start up from your usual internal startup disk and perform the system upgrade.
If there is a problem with the upgraded system, you can start up from the clone (on the external drive volume) like you did before, and "clone the clone" back to the internal drive.  Since the clone is a duplicate of your startup disk immediately before you upgraded, you will be "back to square one."
NOTE:  You should also use Time Machine for ongoing backups.  You can also use your Time Machine backup to restore your system back to a previous state (in this case immediately before the upgrade).  However, you cannot start up from a Time Machine backup, so having a bootable cloned backup feels safer.  But, if you use Time Machine, it's good to know that you have a secondary way to restore the state of the previous system, if needed.

  • External hard drive Snow Leopard and Lion compatibility?

I am going to install Snow Leopard on my Mac (so I can then purchase Lion and install THAT into my Mac) but it only has 975 mb of memory left. So, I've decided that I need to purchase an external hard drive so that I can transfer some videos, songs, etc. to create more space on my Mac. My question is, what external hard drive will be compatible with Snow Leopard and Lion? I was going to purchase a Western Digital external but I've heard many problems of it being incompatible with Lion. What's a reliable and compatible brand that I could purchase? I'm looking for an external hard drive that hold at least 500 gb.

I think your analysis is kind of harsh, kurt.
    'garbage'? really?
Sure, some familiar paradigms have changed, and change brings pain - or at least, unfamiliarity - but that doesn't necessarily mean they're bad.
Of all the changes you mention three things that you consider abominations...
UI changes more in line with iOS. Sure, and this is bad because...?
It's clear that Apple see the iOS as the future, and it makes sense to unify the experience - at least where it makes sense. You don't actually mention which elements you consider bad, BTW.
The scrolling seems to be the one most often cited, but to me it makes way more sense to manipulate the document directly, rather than manipulate a scroll bar that works inversely. I'm not sure what other UI elements you're concerned about.
As for the Save As... issue, the change to Duplicate makes a lot of sense when you understand the concept of automatic file saving and versioning. There's never a need to 'save as' in order to create a point-in-time backup since you automatically get point-in-time backups just by using the OS. The only reason it makes sense to to force a branch and for that, 'duplicate' makes sense. If it bothers you, just read 'duplicate' as 'save as'.
The big break here is that versioning requires application support - the developer needs to add it to their app code - and that creates inconsistencies in the short term because not all apps support versioning. That will fix in time as developers release updates to their apps.
As for bugs, the current release is 10.7.2, so that's two revisions past the original. Any major release (of any applications, not just an OS) is going to have some number of issues and some people avoid any .0 release just for that reason. I think the concensus is that by the time you get to .2 most of the issues have been resolved. Can you point to any bug in 10.7.2 that directly affects you and your use of the OS? or are you basing your statements on outdated material?
In short, every major OS release, from every OS vendor has some number of changes that confuse and upset users, and some number of short-term pain while application developers and users get up to speed. Lion is no different in that respect, and if you look back in history you'll see the exact same sentiment for Snow Leopard's release, and Leopard's, and Tiger's, and..., and..., and...
To call it garbage, though? I think not.

  • Apple mail hung up after switch from snow leapord to lion

While converting from Snow Leopard to Lion and from ME.com to iCloud my Mail on my MacBook Pro went into an "updating your mail database" and has been stuck in this position since.  I've forced quit mail and restarted but it picks back up in the same place and just "sits" there.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Sorry ive fixed it. After restarting the mac, mail put the mailboxes in users; library; as per usual. I disabled some of my older mailboxes by stuffing them temporarily into the bin, and  restarted mail, which worked fine, ill enable the restr of themailboxes one by one to see which one carries the bad bad argument. thanks for looking

  • MacBook air reinstall snow leapord over Lion - back to how I bought it???

Wondering what the heck is going on with my MacBook Air end 2010 model.  I want to wipe it.  Reinstall the correct software and give it away.  Nothing is allowing this seemingly simple pricess to take place.
I have Lion installed on it now - seemingly to cause of my frustration.
Using the disc share on my iMac, it wont let me  install snow leapeard.  Using the included key drive, it wont let me use any erase features OR install on the 64 gig SSD.
    Seriously?????
    I need help.  bad.
    thanks

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Flash Drive. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. After erasing the drive quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

  • Cant use CCC to clone Snow Leapord mac to Mountain Lion mac

    hello all,
I just bought a MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 not retina), and it came with Lion OSX. I recently installed Mountain Lion OS and it appears to be working welll except I am having trouble using a cloned external drive. I cloned my 2007 MacBook (Snow Leapord), using CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner), onto a Seagate 320GB eternal USB Hard Drive. When I plug the drive into my new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion, and go to system Preferences, startup disc, select the coned drive, and click restart, the computer shuts down and appears to be starting to restart, but it just stays on the white screen before the apple symbol shows up and the apple symbol never even pops up, it just stays white forever without booting up. Now, I tried using the drive as a startup disc for my dad's 2008 MacBook Pro with Leapord and it worked like a charm and also tried it on my sister's MacBook Pro (Lion) and it worked fine there too. Is there something about mountain lion that could be causing this problem? I even tried using Target Disc from my old mac (that i cloned) to my new one and it wasnt working either. If anyone has any ideas, please help! Are there any particular tricks to using CCC for Mountain Lion? Thanks for the help!!!

Thanks that makes sense, however, my sisters Macbook pro worked with it and hers is a 2011 and came with Lion, so I'm not sure what to make of that.
Right the Early 2011 model MBPs came originally with Snow Leopard installed and Apple updated SL to 10.6.8 to work correctly with the newer hardware in the Early 2011 models. Then in June Lion came out and then all shipping MBPs came with Lion Pre-Installed but they would still run SL if you had the 10.6.8 version of SL. Since the Late 2011 models were basically the exact same computer, just upgraded CPU and some other minor changes, as the early 2011 models even though the late 2011 models came with Lion Pre-Installed SL would work on those if you had the 10.6.7 or .8 version of SL.
Now with the newest Mid 2012 models all of the Base hardware was changed to the most current versions available, New hardware. Even Lion that worked on the late 2011 models will NOT boot on the Mid 2012 models.
The 2011 version/build of Lion does not have the correct driver package to work on the new hardware.
Apple put together a Special build of Lion to work on those newest system with an updated driver package for the newer hardware.

  • I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lighroom 5 if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?

I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lightroom 5 okay if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?  What will happen to the applications that aren't 64-bit compatible?  Also the Eye-one Display 2 colorimeter to calibrate the monitor will not run on Lion, so that will be an expensive upgrade to an i1DisplayPro. Is the upgrade important enough to offset the expense?  I have an Epson R2000 printer.  Will there be problems with the drivers if I upgrade to Lion?  It would be great to hear from other mac users who are also photographers and who print their own photos.

Before upgrading to Lion be sure to read this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
    Adobe lists these requirements:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html
Looking at http://www.everymac.com/ even the earliest 2008 iMac was fully 64 bit, even though Boot Camp doesn't support 64 bit Windows on that machine.

  • HAVING TROUBLE SAVING ITEMS IN LION AS IT IS DIFFERENT THAN SNOW LEAPORD... CAN ANYONE SHARE THE CORRECT PROCEEDURE?

I'M HAVING TROUBLE USING THE SAVE FEATURE IN LION AS IT'S MUCH DIFFERENT THAN THAT IN SNOW LEAPORD, CAN ANYONE SHARE THE CORRECT PROCEEDURE TO SAVE A DOCUMENT?

Revert back to Snow Leopard would be the ideal choice.
Not writing in all caps would be nice too, it's SHOUTING
Thirdly, Lion introduced auto-save, so you have to duplicate the file, then open the duplicate to make changes.
    Wonderfully asinine.
Quit the program, it will ask you to save.

  • What do I need to go from OS 10.4.11 to lion or even snow leapord with my imac

I have not used my iMac in almost 2 years and have OS 10.4.11 installed on it. What do I need to upgrade to the latest OS? Can any of this be done off line or do I need to get it onlne first. Should I go to just snow leapord or go to lion and is there a benefit of going to lion?

The lastest Mac OS X is Lion v10.7.2. You would have to upgrade to Snow Leopard v10.6 in order to do this.
First, make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements.
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space

I would like to leave my iMac on Snow Leapord to use Power PC software, and run Mountain Lion on my Macbook pro. I am getting an iPhone 5. Is there a way to use mail on all of them with the same accounts?

Any IMAP e-mail account can be accessed from all devices just fine. You don't need to upgrade from Snow Leopard to be able to access an IMAP e-mail account. However, Snow Leopard won't have built-in support for iCloud. As mende1 points out, you can still read your iCloud e-mail from Snow Leopard, but you have to set it up manually. You won't be able to do things like sync your iCloud calendar or addresses with iCal or Address Book on the iMac, though.
