Logic and Motu

I have been using Logic and my Motu 896mk3 successfully for months now. My bass player has a motu 828 of an older model i connected it to the 896 via firewire and they showup in the motu app. In logic however my inputs 1-8 off the 896 all function but 9-16 do not?
Motu support says they are compatible.... is there something in logic prefs I need to set for this to add the next 8 inputs from the 828?

I opened "Audio Midi Setup" It lists both motu 896 and 828. There isnt much to configure there... my "thru" checkboxes are active but everything else is dormant.
I tested 828 with logic by going to Preferences:audio:devices:coreaudio(tab) and switched the Input device from 896 to the 828 and my 828 then became the default inputs 1-8.
so separately the units work but I need to record 16 simultaneous tracks together.

  • Noob needs help with Logic and Motu live setup.

    Hello everyone,
    I'm a noob / semi noob who could use some help with a live setup using 2 MOTU 896HD's and Logic on a Mac.
    Here's the scenario:
    I teach an outdoor marching percussion section (a drumline and a front ensemble of marimbas and vibes). We have an amazing setup of live sound to amplify and enhance the mallet percussion. There is a yamaha PA system with 2 subs and 2 mains which are routed through a rack unit that processes the overall PA balance. I'm pretty sure that the unit is supposed to avoid feedback and do an overall cross-over EQ of the sound. Other then that unit, we have 2 motu896hd units which are routed via fire-wire. I also have a coax cable routing the output of the secondary box to the input of the primary box (digital i/o which converts to ADAT in (i think?)..?
    Here's the confusion:
    There are more then 8 inputs being used from the ensemble itself, so I need the 16 available inputs to be available in Logic. I was lead to believe that the 2nd motu unit would have to be sent digitally to the 1st motu unit via coax digital i/o. Once in Logic, however, I cannot find the signal or any input at all past the 8th input (of the 1st unit).
    Here's the goal:
    All of my performers and inputs routed via firewire into a Mac Mini running OSX and Logic pro.
    I want to be able to use MainStage and run different patches of effects / virt. instruments for a midi controller keyboard / etc.
    I want to be able to EQ and balance the ensemble via Logic.
    Here's another question:
    How much latency will I be dealing with? Would a mac mini with 4gb of ram be able to handle this load? With percussion, I obviously want the sound as latency free as possible. I also, however, want the flexibility of sound enhancement / modification that comes with Logic and the motu896hd units.
    Any help would be REALLY appreciated. I need the routing assistance along with some direction as to whether or not this will work for this type of application. I'm pretty certain it does, as I have spoken with some other teachers in similar venues and they have been doing similar things using mac mini's / logic / mainstage / etc.
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

    You'll definitely want to read the manual to make sure the 896HDs are connected together properly. ADAT is a little tricky, it's not just a matter of cabling them together. Go to motunation.com if you need more guidance on connecting multiple devices. Beyond that initial hookup, here are a couple of quick suggestions:
    1. Open CueMix and see if both devices are reported there. If not, your connections aren't correct. Be sure to select 44.1kHz as your sample rate, otherwise you are reducing the number of additional channels. For instance at 88.2kHz you would get half the additional channels via ADAT.
    2. You may need to create an aggregate device for the MacBook to recognize more than the first 896HD. Lots of help on this forum for how to do that. Again, first make sure you have the 896HDs connected together properly.
    3. As for latency with Mainstage on the Mini, no way to know until you try it. Generally MOTU is fantastic for low latency work but Mainstage is a question mark for a lot of users right now. If the Mini can't cut the mustard, you have a great excuse to upgrade to a MacBook Pro.

  • Logic and Motu help.

    Hi guys, new to the forum. I have a pretty specific question that I've asked on a lot of other boards and everyone is pointing me to here, so I'll give it a try. First let me give you the background information. my set up includes an M-Audio octane running into a MOTU 828 mkII via adat litepipe connection. The MOTU runs into my friends G5 via firewire. When opening the cue-mix mixing console software that comes with the motu, I can see and here the 8 adat tracks as well as the 10 audio inputs, but when trying to assign where to record from in logic, I can only see the 10 audio inputs. I ran the set-up assistant a few times, but couldn't understand how to get logic to read the adat. I have logic express 7, and i'm wondering if I need pro to do this. Feel free to bash me if I'm saying something that has been asked before, the search function wasn't working on this computer. Thanks for you help!
    Ben

    This may be straying a bit oblique to the immediate topic, but the way I have my MOTU Ultralite set up, I'm running all eight of my preamps and comps into its analog ins, and selecting Main 1 and 2 in, via the firewire signal chain, into the iMac and Logic Express, and Main 1 and 2 out,(to the Logic monitor buss, which then passes throught the MOTU outs to my active monitors) in the MOTU setup window.
    In Logic, when I go to grab any track, and I want to use my Beyer M160, which is plugged into the Ultralite's analog in number 5, and sent down the line through the firewire on Main 1 and 2 ins, according to the MOTU setup, no matter which audio track I've grabbed in Logic, if I tell that Logic Audio Track to take number 5 in, my Beyer M160 will be coming in through Logic Audio Track input 5. No matter which Logic Audio Track is being used for this connect. It's always that way. Same with all my other mikes into their respective preamps, comps, and into the MOTU in's. I bypass the preamps in the MOTU completely because I've a Langevin DVC in MOTU's 1 and 2(which are the only two preamped inputs on the Ultralite), cuz I don't need any of the MOTU preamp, just line signal, and they'll go in to Logic's track inputs 1 and 2 when I assign those inputs to any Logic Audio Track.
    Just use the input assign on the Logic Audio Track window. So if I need to use more of the DVC I just select input 1 or 2 on a Logic Audio Track when I go to record. Again, that's no matter which Logic Audio Track is being used. By the way, anyone with an Ultralite, you have to use an XLR connect on inputs 1 and 2 on the MOTU if you want balanced +4 ins. If you use a TRS into the Neutrik, it'll be balanced, but -10. This way, I never have to repatch a mike. I just select the input that mike is hooked to via the MOTU to Logic via the firewire. Setting up the 'sequential option' in Logic's setup may facilitate this,,but I can make any input chain go to any Logic input by selecting the input in the Logic's Audio Track Window selection box. Hope this helps.

  • Fixed a problem with OSX-Logic and a MOTU 828MkII

    I was having problems with my 828MkII using it with a new G5 and OS10.3.9. There were massive drop-outs.
    It was a new computer and everything was installed correctly and cleanly - there was no other hardware installed other than the MOTU, and no other software other than Logic 7 - everything was done properly and tested over and over, but the problem persisted.
    I still had my old G4 with an older OS9 version of Logic, and when I went back to try the MOTU with this set up, it worked flawlessly. This fact made me suspect that the core audio driver was the problem, so I tried all the tricks I've seen in forums - reset the MOTU - uninstalled and re-installed. Upgraded my firmware. Even tried OS10.4 with old drivers new drivers, and still nothing worked.
    Then out of desperation I tried a new firewire cable and everything worked fine.
    I went back and tried the set up on my OS9 machine a few times and the MOTU worked flawlessly under the Asio2 drivers. What I learned is that OSX and core audio must use firewire differently because the cable did not work with that set up.
    I couldn't believe it. It's like finding out that a guitar cable only works with a Les Paul or something wierd like that.
    I'm sure someone out there must know the technical difference and why this cable works fine under OS9 (Asio2) but not OSX (core audio).
    I'm posting this because if I had read such a post - I would have tried a new cable as the first thing - but I had myself convinced that it could not be the cable. I still don't believe it. ! Luckily it was the cheapest fix.
    Scott.

    Same thing happened here when I check all items to install at once.
    After the installation failure , L7,L8,Waveburner .. everything unexpectedly quit then I decided to replace the entire OS to cloned back up.
    I tried the installation again and xxxx happened again. This time, I installed only applications (overwritten) again and it fixed the problem.
    Then I installed only JamPack on FW and went smoothly.
    I called Apple Tech and now I am waiting for the new installer DVDs of Audio contents only by regular mail.
    Hey, do we have similar serial number?? Apple script got damaged or something? I have no idea.

  • Thunderbolt and motu 8pre

    Hi
    Does anyone know how to get the MOTU 8pre to work with a Firewire 400 to 800 and Thunderbolt adapter on a
    2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 Imac?
    Motu support suggest a 400 -800 cable but I have tried this and it just doesn't work!!

    yes MOTU comes with the "Cue Mix console" which is used to create a no Latency headphone mix from all of the inputs and outputs on the hardware, but it does not effect the audio passed from the MOTU through the firewire cable to the MAC unless of course you engaged the bounce back feature that sends the monitor mix to the mac. But that would not be set by default. for more info go here:
    http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/8pre/cuemixdsp.html
    Also there is the MOTU "Audio Setup Program" which allows you to set sample rate and clock source and so on, but all that is set in logic anyway. as soon as you change the settings in Logic, the MOTU audio setup is updated. From there you can also set the the headphone output to monitor the main outs or just what is assigned to the headphone channel. Also from the "General tab you can change the names of your inputs so instead of a generic "Analog 1" you can change the name to something more descriptive
    Hope this helps

  • Importing Synth Names into Logic and the "environment"

    Logic 7.2, OSX.4.something...
    I'm brand spanking new to Logic (migrating from Opcode's Vision...) and I have 3 questions:
    1) The Environment: I've read the user manual chapter on "The Environment" and I'm totally lost. Is there not a way that Logic can read what's attached to it via your MIDI interface/OSX MidiCore setup and create an environment based on this automatically? This would be a good starting point at least, but there's no mention in the manual of this function and it seems crazy that one would have to create each instrument, define each channel and so on down the line.
    2) Once my synthesizer and their channels are defined how do you get synthesizer patch names into logic such that when I pick an instrument from the track or arrange window, I can see a list of all patches available in any given bank for that instrument and pick my sound (ie: send the bank or program change message....) This is not explained anywhere that I could find and I'm curious if there's a way to import via sysex or a universal librarian. I'm an old school Opcode Vision user and I have patch names for all my gear and I can't imgine having to type all the names and even if I did, there's nothing that explains how to do this and assign patch change and bank change commands. Can sombody explain or point me to a resource that explains in laymans terms how to set up ones MIDI environment based on their MIDICore setup and get patch names to come through.
    3) Librarian: I can't find anything that talks about a way to manage patches and instruments within Logic and I need some method of being able to manage and get patches into Logic. Does Logic have a librarian or do I need a 3rd party program? If it doesn't have this, can somebody suggest a program that would meet this function and integrate with Logic such that I can import and manage patches?
    I hope this makes sense to somebody....
    Thanks WAY in advance....
    G4800 quicksilver Mac OS X (10.4.7) Dual boot system

    Hi and welcome fellow former Vision user. I too came from Vision a couple years ago
    to answer
    1) Yes, the 1st time you open logic it looks at your audio midi setup (AMS) to make a basic environment from the info there. if there no hardware synths listed there they will not show up in Logic. Unfortunately Logic does not come with any synth device lists to add to your AMS so there is none to choose from. you will have to define them or you can use the MOTU list. you can download a copy here http://www.digicake.com/midnam/ download the MOTU.sit MOTU uses these midnam files for bank and patch change info. Unfortunately Logic does not use the bank and program information in them, it sure would make setting Logic up much easier
    2) To Get patch names into logic you can type them in one by one or use a word processor doc to import the names Pages 216 and 217 of the manual explain this
    3) Librarian? well sort of... Emagic had one called SoundDiver that I think is still in beta testing for OSX but I am not real familiar with it do a google search and see what you come up with
    I am hoping that someday Apple will use .middev and .midnam files to address outboard synths the same way DP does. That is why I use DP when I want to make standard midi files for outboard synths. DP is very similar to Vision in that way. but for everything else Logic rules

  • Logic and Audio Desk

    I have been using Motu traveler with PC for couple of years...just seen the light and got a mac with Logic Studio - it has just dawned on me that Motu Traveler came with Audio Desk software that I ignored coz I was on a PC......now Logic is probably fine but I was wonering whether Audio Desk has any use in my setup?? Is Logic better anyway or thare there certain aspects of Audio Desk that are great and should be used in conjunction with Logic or are there parts of project that could be better run with Audio desk etc.....I have no experience with Audio desk so any experiences would be good........ta

    yes I have some time off work now so am going through the David Nahmani and David Dvorin books - definte learn Logic and use it first and foremost.
    Just wondering whether there is anything that Audio Desk does a lot better?!?!
    Should I do everything in Logic or is Audio Desk good for recrding audio and importing to logic or not worth it and record direct tologic...is audio desk better for mixing....probably not and I should ignore it but just wondering if it has a use or just redundant now that I have Logic Pro 8.

  • Logic and MPC2000 tap tempo feature

    Does anyone know how to setup logic pro so that I can emulate the tap tempo feature that the mpc has. I have downloaded the mpc groove templates and have become very skilled at using the Exs24 and Motu mach five samplers. Only feature I'm missing before I sell my mpc is the tap tempo button. For the hiphop stuff I create this feature is needed for hats and weird sounds sometimes.

    try going to the matrix editor
    set the grid to whatever resolution you want.
    use pencil tool to draw in the note that you want
    copy/duplicate the note so that all the beat subdivisions are filled (all 1/32 or 1/16 or what ever
    delete the notes that you don't want.
    using logic arpegiator is a good idea as well

  • Logical AND in MDX Reporting Services Parameter

    Hi, I would like to implement logical AND on a cube parameter. I have seen examples of hard-coded logical AND in MDX.
    (http://salvoz.com/blog/2013/12/24/mdx-implementing-logical-and-on-members-of-the-same-hierarchy/)
    But I'm not sure how to apply this to a parameter's MDX dataset.
    Here is an example of the automatically generated MDX which uses logical OR:
    This is the drop down parameter:
    WITH MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterCaption] AS [Department].[Department].CURRENTMEMBER.MEMBER_CAPTION MEMBER
    [Measures].[ParameterValue] AS
    [Department].[Department].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterLevel] AS
    [Department].[Department].CURRENTMEMBER.LEVEL.ORDINAL
    SELECT {[Measures].[ParameterCaption], [Measures].[ParameterValue],
    [Measures].[ParameterLevel]} ON COLUMNS
    , [Department].[Department].ALLMEMBERS ON ROWS
    FROM [MyCube]
    And the demo report dataset is:
    SELECT NON EMPTY { [Measures].[CompanyTbl Count] } ON COLUMNS,
    NON EMPTY { ([Product Level No].[Product Level No].[Product Level No].ALLMEMBERS ) }
    DIMENSION PROPERTIES MEMBER_CAPTION, MEMBER_UNIQUE_NAME ON ROWS FROM
    ( SELECT ( STRTOSET(@DepartmentDepartment, CONSTRAINED) )
    ON COLUMNS FROM [MyCube]) WHERE
    ( IIF( STRTOSET(@DepartmentDepartment, CONSTRAINED).Count = 1,
    STRTOSET(@DepartmentDepartment, CONSTRAINED), [Department].[Department].currentmember ) )
    CELL PROPERTIES VALUE,
    BACK_COLOR, FORE_COLOR, FORMATTED_VALUE, FORMAT_STRING,
    FONT_NAME, FONT_SIZE, FONT_FLAGS

    Hi,
    I can see there just one parameter @Department@Department in your script. But if you had two parameters that should return resultset affected by two parameters. You can do it as either select from subselect from subselect.
    Example 1
    SELECT
    {x} ON COLUMNS,
    {ROWS_SET} ON ROWS
    FROM
    (SELECT StrToSet(@Param1) ON COLUMNS FROM
    (SELECT StrToSet(@Param2) ON COLUMNS FROM
    [CUBE_NAME]
    Or crossjoin between 2 parameters
    SELECT
    {x} ON COLUMNS,
    {ROWS_SET} ON ROWS
    FROM
    (SELECT StrToSet(@Param1)*StrToSet(@Param2) ON COLUMNS FROM
    [CUBE_NAME]

  • What is a  Logical and Physical file path in sap?

    what is a  Logical and Physical file path in sap?

    Hi,
    Physical file is what you see from the OS level.
    Logical file is what ABAP code can call certain functions to read/write.
    Transaction FILE would link them together. Typically the logical path ends with "<FILENAME>", and the logical file refers to the logical path.
    To extract the physical path from the logical path name
    DATA: lf_mandt TYPE sy-mandt,
            lf_opsys TYPE sy-opsys.
      lf_mandt = sy-mandt.
      lf_opsys = sy-opsys.
    To extract the physical path from the logical path name
      CALL FUNCTION 'FILE_GET_NAME'
        EXPORTING
          client           = lf_mandt
          logical_filename = p_unix
          operating_system = lf_opsys
        IMPORTING
          file_name        = gwa_input
        EXCEPTIONS
          file_not_found   = 1
          OTHERS           = 2.
      IF sy-subrc EQ 0.
      Concatenating the physical path and the input unix file name
        CONCATENATE gwa_input p_file INTO gf_file .

  • Logical AND not working in the forum search box

    Logical AND of search terms does not seem to be working in the MSDN forum search box. Example: I go to the Project Customization and Program forum and type the word
    subproject
    in the search box. I get a lot of hits. So now I try to reduce the number of hits by typing
    subproject AND read
    Surprisingly, I now get MORE hits than before.   The same thing happens if I enter
    subproject & read
    Do the MSDN forums not support the standard logical AND combinations of search terms?  If they do support these combinations, what is the syntax?

  • Logical and physical clear in ASO

    Hi There,
    I found one statement for Logical and physical clear in essbase dbag
    The process for logically clearing data completes in a length of time that is proportional to
    the size of the data being cleared.
    The process for physically clearing data completes in a length of time proportional to the
    size of the input data, not to the size of the data being cleared
    What does size of the input data actually means? How it is different from data being cleared.
    Thanks.

    What is interesting with these statements is based on them, you would think a logical clear would be slower than a physical clear. In reality, it is vastly faster. I took a 30 minute physical clear down to about 40 seconds with a logical clear. Logical clers create offsetting entries from the main cube in a slice to produce a result whila a physical clear deletes the actual data. The one thing about logical clears is rather than have #missing for cleared intersections you get zeros

  • Logical AND in Java Regular Expressions

    I'm trying to implement logical AND using Java Regular Expressions.
    I couldn't figure out how to do it after reading Java docs and textbooks. I can do something like "abc.*def", which means that I'm looking for strings which have "abc", then anything, then "def", but it is not "pure" logical AND - I will not find "def.*abc" this way.
    Any ideas, how to do it ?
    Baken

    First off, looks like you're really talking about an "OR", not an "AND" - you want it to match abc.*def OR def.*abc right? If you tried to match abc.*def AND def.*abc nothing would ever match that, as no string can begin with both "abc" and "def", just like no numeric value can be both 2 and 5.
    Anyway, maybe regex isn't the right tool for this job. Can you not simply programmatically match it yourself using String methods? You want it to match if the string "starts with" abc and "ends with" def, or vice-versa. Just write some simple code.

  • BEx Formula Use of 'Logical And' and Calculation for Gross Margin

    HI Bex gurus.
    Having an odd time with what should be a simple formula to handle the display of gross margin (GM). The goal here is to display GM% properly and the requirement is as follows
    If GM <= 0 then 0.0
      Else
    If GM > 0 and Sell > 0 then ( ( sell - cost /sell ) * 100 )
      Else
    If GM >0 and Sell = 0 then 100
    I am familiar with bex formulas and have referenced the help docs on booleans here -
    Boolean Operators - SAP Business Explorer - SAP Library
    But what is odd is that if I use a calculation or a CFK in the IF, THEN with a LOGICAL AND, the formula does not report correctly
    If I put in a static value, like 77, the expected logic is followed.  I have tried making sure have extra parentheses and changing the order of the statement, to no avail!  I could use some extra brains on this puzzling matter, so you help is greatly appreciated and will award points!
    Thanks
    lee lewis
    Here are the formulas in text and below screen shots.  Wish could copy and past formulas to and from editor!
    GM%77
    ( ( ( 'Order GM' >0 ) AND ( Order Sell  >  0 ) ) == 1) * 77 + ( ( ( 'Order GM'> 0 ) AND ( Order Sell == 0 ) ) == 1) * 100 + ('Order GM' <= 0) *0.0
    GM%
    ( ( ( 'Order GM' >0 ) AND ( Order Sell  >  0 ) ) == 1) * 'REF GM%' + ( ( ( 'Order GM' > 0 ) AND ( Order Sell == 0 ) ) == 1) * 100 + ('Order GM' <= 0) *0.0
    'REF GM%
    (order  sell - order cost /order sell ) * 100 )
    GM%77
    GM%

    Shouldn't you change on of the brackets in your REF GM% ?
    'REF GM%
    (order  sell - order cost /order sell ) * 100 )
    I would put that as
    'REF GM%
    (order  sell - order cost) /order sell  * 100 )
    Not sure what you mean with those red arrows... but in both cases you would be dividing by 0 (order sell = 0).
