  • Powerbook 17" G4 1.67ghz - dead logic board, or dead DC board?

    Hi there,
    I have recently come in to the possession of a Powerbook G4 17" 1.67ghz, given to me by a friend in an attempt to fix it. The problem is simple: it won’t turn on! when plugged into the power cord, it makes the green illuminated rim on the flex turn off. I then have to turn the power supply off and on again to get it to work on other machines. I have been told it could be a DC board issue, or it could be logic board... If anyone could shed any light on the issue I would be grateful... Would prefer not to have to splash out on a new logic board!

    I went through this last year.
    Power's up - but the light around the power plug flickers green all the time - even when charging.
    Won't charge when it's in sleep or turned off.
    Thought DC board - logically - but nope logic board.
    Then found out bluetooth wasn't working either.
    Well I thought 800USD is a lot to pay to fix those 2 things - so just living with it now.
    So even if it appears to be DC board - it might not be....

  • Is it possible to run my computer if the logic board is dead?

    Some water spilled in my computer a week ago and it stopped running. I sent it to repair to an authorized dealer and they said the Top Case and the Logic Board where broken. Anyhow, they gave me an expensive budget and I didn't fix my MacBook Pro.
    I have bootcamp installed. When I came home I turned it as Mac and it turns out the screen is working but it got stuck at the grey apple icon with the loading wheel. I turned it off and booted as Windows. Everything went fine with Windows. I'm actually writing this from windows. Sound is working, keyboard is working, screen is working. It seems fine.
    Is it possible that they gave a wrong diagnosis? How can I fix my Mac partition without format?

  • Can logic board die slowly, or is it black'n white?

    My Macbook Pro 15" i7 of early 2011 seems to have a major problem related to the logic board.
    in a nutshell, in case you don't have time to read the details:
    The computer stopped starting up after quite a few restarts, AHT, PRAM reset, safe boots, new RAM and new SSD. This all happened withing 3 days.
    Apple service guys will look at it tomorrow, but they already said it's most likely logic board failure and will need replacement.
    the long story:
    symptoms I faced along the way:
    - less than two weeks ago, screen started freezing forcing me to force-shut down.
    - started repeating within hours, occasionally giving Kernel Panic message.
    - within a day, frozen screens had several varieties which would either come after a few minutes of working or at startup: blue screen with vertical bars of different shade blue, or same with yellow tones, or the last seen screen with a couple inches of the of the right side of screen having shifted to the left side with a thick black bar in between the two (i could still move the mouse for a while but not able to click).
    - started also having sessions where the computer would not start up at all (blue screen or gray screen with wheel turning)
    - in between these steps I ran the computer on safe mode mostly successfully, did Apple Hardware Test 3 times with nothing wrong diagnosed (took 18 mins each), I did PRAM reset a few times too
    - i tested these with different peripherals and power cable attached and not attached (normally i have a USB external and one or rarely two firewire drives attached for my video and photo work).
    I realized that the computer would still be working after the freeze too. I use the MBPro to share internet for my iPhone and while it was frozen I still had internet.
    I was following the suggestions on these forums to diagnose the problem.
    Some suggested that it could be the RAM.
    Coincidentally, the new 16 GB RAM that i had ordered came with the 246GB SSD just then.
    As warranty ended already some months ago, I did the replacement with my dad who is an electrician and would know where to touch where not to.
    The computer came back to life, super fast with the new SSD. I installed Mac OS X on it, set up the older HDD which I placed in place of the old DVD drive and started moving files around to configure my stysem.
    after several hours the screen freezing came back again.
    then after repeating the above steps of AHT (which took 2 hours), PRAM etc, it stopped starting up. It won't start anymore. Freezes in the early blue screen.
    Just before new year's, I took it to Apple Service in a local store. They said they will have to look at it thoroughly after the 3rd (tomorrow). But the guy said the symptoms which I wrote above pretty much tell already that the logic board is dead.
    Can it die in a slow manner like this?
    It will cost me at least 750$ and I am not even sure if shipment and labor is included in this (I live in Cyprus). This is a very expensive price to pay for a relatively new machine for which I already paid over $2000 when I bought it 18 months ago.
    I read Apple has a tendency to call all such symptoms a 'dead logic board' and just rip people off unfairly. I am aware this was mostly for 2007 and 2008 models but I worry they would still do it. I just spent my savings for the SSD and new RAM. So this is a major bummer.
    What would you all suggest for me to try? How should I talk to the Apple Service guys?
    is it better to just sell this 'as is' and try to get a new or properly working pre-owned one?

    Sometimes some posts just seem to slip through the cracks... if you're taking your machine to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and they simply 'reconnected' the logic board and you're still having problems, it sounds as if you need to get the logic board replaced. Since you're out of warranty and you, apparently didn't purchase the AppleCare extended warranty, the repair folks will charge you for a logic board replacement.
    $750 sounds a little steep, but if that's what it costs then it doesn't seem as if you've an alternative but to pay the price. I don't know about Cyprus, but I do know that in the US there is an Apple flat rate repair pricing scheme in which Apple will repair anything on the machine for less than $350. You might want to look at the article and ask one of the managers about this program and whether or not you could get the 'deal'.
    Good luck - sorry that you're having such a bad experience. Just let it be a lesson to always purchase AppleCare - particularly with Apple notebooks.

  • MacBookPro2,1 Firewire / Clock Battery Issue... maybe Logic Board?

    Hello,
    I have this MacbookPro 17" since late 2007.
    It has had the logic board replaced twice by Apple Service.
    This happened over a year ago.
    The cause at that time was that my hd suddenly was not working and after further diagnose it turned out to be the logic board.
    The same day I got it back from Apple Service Firewire ports were not working... so I had to wait for another 2 weeks and finally got it back.
    A couple of months later I noticed that the clock would reset to 1969 if I removed the battery and the magsafe cable.
    A couple of months later I noticed that the firewire ports didnt work at all. ( FW400 / FW800 ). I didnt have the 2 weeks needed for Apple Service to do a diagnose and another 2 weeks to do whatever it is they do to fix it so I had no choice and stuck with the problems.
    Now I finally got me another machine and can try and fix this. Any ideas?

    Are you still under warranty? If so, Apple is obligated to fix these problems under warranty. Did you ever report back to Apple that you still had problems or get a case number?
    You probably have the same MBP that I do, since I bought mine new in September 2007.
    Regarding the FireWire ports, try the tips in this article:

    See if you can get them working again.
    Regarding the clock, it sounds like the backup battery on the logic board is dead or discharged, so you are dependent on the main battery and the power adaptor for keeping the time. The backup battery probably needs to be replaced.
    On general principles, it wouldn't hurt to do a PRAM reset and a SMC reset:

    These resets will return everything to default values, and sometimes will cure some problems.
    If nothing helps, then it sounds like your last logic board replacement is defective. I believe that both the 400 and the 800 FireWire ports are attached to the logic board, as is the backup battery for the clock. The battery can be replaced as far as I know, but I don't know if anything can be done about the ports.

  • Kernel panic.. with new logic board

    Hi,
    So I recently replaced my logic board after trying EVERYTHING to fix a somewhat frequently occuring kernel panic. Now however.. it has happened again.
    Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I honestly feel like I've tried everything. Could it be bad RAM? I've changed the hard drive, done a fresh OS X install (perhaps its something in my settings from migrating my old stuff back over?), new logic board.. reset PRAM, every suggestion I could find.

    Cheers - I've run Rember a few times and it hasn't come up with any errors, but I've heard it's not a 100% accurate test. Looks like that's the only thing left it could be!

  • The logic board of my macbkpro 10.6.8 (OS ML) has died. I want t migrate info to another McbkPro (OS Snow Leopard) but is asking me to update to same OS. Can I update the latter to Mavericks and migrate the info from Mountain lion? thanks

    Hi i took my macbook pro to an apple store because it would not start correctly. The veredict was that the logic board was dead. As this is a very expensive item to replace, I have decided I will buy a new one but I am currently overseas, and will wait a couple of months when I get back home. This is a macbookpro 15 inch early 2011, running on Mountain Lion OS. I have another macbook pro 13inch running on snow leopard. At the store we tried to migrate the info using an ethernet cable (using the "T" command on startup) but the system asked for an update of the OS. The guy at the store told me I had to update the OS so that the two macs would be on the same OS - mountain Lion. As the newest (and free) OS is Mavericks, I wonder wheather I coud update the 13 inch mac to mavericks and perform the migration. The guy at the store was explicit to say that if the OS were different it would not work. But reading on the apple website it seems that mavericks support this kind of migration altough is not explicit about it. Can you please help?

    As this is a new issue for me, I believe I had the incorrect approach, maybe you can help me. What I want to do is recover a few files in my desktop, and some information i had on the iCal application and the Mail application as well.As I do not want to do a full migration into this computer (which is not mine) I believe that starting the damaged MBP in Target mode should allow me to search and cop the files I need. But:
    1. Can I open the Ical and mail apps to look for the info I need while reading it as an external HD  ?
    2. Do the target machine (my friends) still need to be updated to ML o Mavs so that it recognizes my MBP as an external drive if starting it in Target mode ? (no migration assistant)

  • Battery won't charge?  Logic board?

    My 800MHz G4 iBook no longer charges the battery. It will run from the battery, but not get charged when plugged in. Is this a logic board issue or a DC in board issue? I can change them out myself, I just don't know which one might be the culprit.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    This happened to my iBook when the DC input board
    needed to be replaced. Its a tricky process, but I
    can post you a link to DIY directions. When you plug
    the AC adapter into the DC input hole, does it seem
    loose and not want to stay in?
    If it was your Logic Board, you would have different
    symptoms. Faulty logic board problems manifest
    themselves one day as garbling the screen image and
    quickly result in total failure of the machine to
    boot up or otherwise function.

    Yes, the battery not charging is my only problem. I just hated to spend that much on a new logic board and not have this fixed. Replacing the DC in isn't that difficult since I've opened up several iBooks before.

  • Powerbook G3 Pismo-Bad Logic Board?

    Hi. My powerbook G3 pismo suddenly refused to work last week. It chimes at startup, but then only gets the "grey screen." I took the hard drive out and put in in an external enclosure......it's fine. I took out an extra RAM chip I had added a couple of years ago....still no go. I have attempted to access the disk in Target Disk mode...no go. I've also tried to start up from a different startup disk by pressing the option key at startup...still no go! The Apple Hardware Test CD that came with my Pismo never gets past the "loading....." stage. I am writing in hopes that someone can tell me what the problem is. I'm assuming it's the Logic Board and am ready to purchase a replacement off Ebay, but would hate to buy one if someone thinks or knows for sure that it is not the Logic Board. I guess what I'm asking is this......What exatly happens when your Logic board fails? Are the symptoms similar to the ones I've described above?     The HD ribbon cable would have been such an easy fix, but unfortunately I think the logic board is now the only fix as Cornelius has suggested.
    Please keep in mind that the logic board contains multiple components and you can have a failure of one component without affecting the rest of the board. The FireWire bus is controlled by the PCI bus bridge whereas the internal HD is controlled by a separate I/O device controller. Even a partial failure of the I/O device controller is possible as evidenced by still having functionality of the optical drive.     You can tear down the Pismo to replace the logic board or continue the inconvenient use of the FireWire HD. There is another alternative, however; buy an expansion bay HD enclosure and install your current HD in the enclosure. Since the optical drive interface still works, the media bay HD should have no problem. However, I would check with MCE first.

  • Is there a fix for a dead ethernet port besides a new logic board?

    My ethernet port went dead on my IMac.  I unplugged the ethernet cable and plugged it into my laptop and it worked instantly.  I am still able to connect wirelessly.  I bought an apple USB to Ethernet converter and plugged it in.  It worked for about 3 days and then it went dead.  Once again I was able to unplug the ethernet cable, plug it into my laptop and instantly had a connection.  Is there a fix for a dead ethernet port besides a new logic board and if not how do I figure out which logic board I need?

    This problem baffled me. I kept getting the "ethernet cable unplugged" error after testing my cables good. Was abut to write it off as port gone bad when I found this thread.

    Basically go to SETTINGS/NETWORK. Then highlight your ETHERNET port and click the ADVANCED button. From there click the HARDWARE tab.
    Set
    CONFIGURE to MANUALLY
    SPEED to whatever your ethernet speed is, in my case 1000baseT
    DUPLEX - FULL DUPLEX, FLOW CONTROL
    Leave MTU at Standard
    Hit OK.
    Then don't forget to hit APPLY. I didn't do this the first couple of times assuming hitting OK applied these settings. You gotta hit APPLY.
    In about two seconds, my Ethernet connected again.
    I went back and reset it to AUTOMATIC just to test and after doing so got the cable unplugged error again. So I am leaving it on manual and it's working.

  • Replacing/ fixing the Logic Board yourself

    Hi there, I have taken my iBook (dual USB, @ 700MHz, 20 GB HDD) to this Apple Store in Buenos Aires, which I'm pretty sure has a fried Logic Board.
    They told me up front that the cost wil be around 700 U$S, and that the warranty will be 90 days. I'm not thrilled at all for the warranty, I expect to be a lot longer after spending all that money!
    Anyways, a couple of questions:
    1- Is 90 days a regular warranty period, or am I being robbed?
    2- Aside from replacing the Logic Board with a new one, is there anything I can do to fix a Logic Board?
    (Anything I can solder, for instance; or something like that?)

    No, the iBook does not show the "classic" Logic Board symptoms, it simply does nothing at all when plugged and the power button is pressed, nothing at all. (Tried with two different batteries, w/o batteries, w/o the extra RAM, w/o the AirPort card... Nothing, in any case)
    Left it on the Apple Store, they will open it for 20 U$S and let me know on Thursday what it is going on with it, and see if I accept the charges for the repair.
    The problem of getting a MacBook is that if repairing the iBook is expensive, getting a MacBook costs some 2000 U$S down here
    I guess if everything goes bad with the local Apple Store here (have to pay 700 + U$S for the job, etc. pretty much what I expect) I'll wait and see if I can send it to DT&T, what they offer is simply amazing, not only the price, but also the 6 months warranty.

  • (HELP) Dead MacBook Pro.. possibly something to do with the logic board.

    I had been noticing my MacBook Pro's performance degrading lately.. for example whenever I dragged a file into a folder it would lag for 5-6 seconds and then copy over. It started to bug me so I guessed that maybe a reinstall would fix the problem. After reinstalling and rebooting, I got no video on the display.. keyboard wouldn't work.. only things that happened was the disc drive made a sound, light came on the font and could hear the HDD spinning a little.
    I then took it to the Apple store as thats what Apple told me to do on the phone. So we took the loverly 3 hour drive(there and back) to the closest Apple store just to have the man take it out the back for 2-3 minutes and then come back to say "It's possibly the logic board that is dead".
    I am out of warranty by 2-3 months and so he told me I would have to pay £700 or so to repair. As a full-time student I don't have that kind of money.. I don't even have £60. - I find it annoying how they didn't even fully check the problem out.. just a "possibly the logic board".
    So what if I manage to click my fingers and have £700 appear right before my very eyes? I pay for the new logic board just to find out thats not really the problem? or maybe have the same thing happen again right after the 90 days that logic board is covered for? meaning I have to fork out another £700.
    I am a massive fan of Apple.. I love their products. I have brought so many products of theirs.. now just 2-3 months after my warranty runs out.. I get this. They didn't even say sorry for selling me a faulty product and didn't offer to help out in any way. When I spend £1,299 on something I expect it to last A LOT longer than a year and 3 months.
    I need my MacBook Pro very badly for College but now I can't do my work and if I want to do my work, I have to pay £700 for it.
    What do I do? Who do I talk to? Is it possible to get it fixed without having to pay that kind of money?
    I can't settle for anything less than a Mac. I love the OS way too much and need so many of the apps that are Mac-only. So no way am I going to forget this and buy myself some cheap PC CrapTop.

    Unfortunately, if you cannot boot from the disc, it won't be possible to do any diagnostic tests yourself.
    It might be worth getting a second opinion. Is there an Apple authorized repair shop anywhere near you? If so, possibly you could take it there and see if they can diagnose it. You may need to pay a small fee for them to do this. But possibly someone might take a little more time with it and be able to give you a definitive diagnosis.

    I don't know if this would help or not--there are not many things to do when the computer is unresponsive and you can't use the keyboard or a disc.
    Unless the problem was reported to Apple while the MBP was still under warranty, I don't think there is any way that Apple would be able to fix it under warranty. Did you ever take it in for any problem under warranty that might relate to its current situation?

  • Dead for no apparent reason - logic board AGAIN?

    So last night, after I had installed all my software updates and restarted successfully, I decided to pop in a new airport card b/c mine had been giving me trouble (and I wanted to find out whther it was the card or the logic board that was failing)
    Well. I found out. The thing successfully shut down without a problem, and replaced the card without a problem, plugged it in. hit the power button. nothing. nothing nothing.
    not even a hum or a chatter.
    I've been poking through the discussions here, and I understand that this is likely a logic board failure.
    I've already had my logic board replaced, twice I think. The funny thing is that my poor 'book worked for 3 yrs. without issue and now it's been failing close to once a year.
    I'm kind of at a loss as for what to do, I really can't afford to keep getting it fixed like this! Also, I have two exams this week, and yup, of course I take all of my notes on my laptop. Distressing, to say the least.
    Well at least that was cathartic.

    If it's the recognized logic board failure, it will usually start up at least. You may have to wait overnight for it to start up again. I did on two of my three logic board failures.
    You may know that enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from this problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If your iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.
    If you are past the three-year time limit, try calling (800) 767-2775 and ask for Customer Relations (NOT Customer Service--they can't help you) and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
    If the answer from Apple is absolutely, positively, "NO!" DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California offers the cheapest repair I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.

  • Retrieving info off ibook with dead logic board

    our ibook's logic board died, so we bought a new macbook. now we are trying to retrieve stuff off the harddrive of the ibook with firewire.
    i followed the steps to use target disk mode, but the ibook starts up with a blue screen and a floating firewire symbol, and nothing shows up on the macbook at all.
    the repair guy said nothing was wrong with the hard drive, so why can't i access it?
    please help!

    The C clamp method works for some units because of an open circuit short on the logic board isolated at the video card chip in the lower left hand corner of the unit, about dead center 1.25 inch approx. away from the left/bottom edge of the iBook. By appling pressure to that area the chip is forced back down into the logic board, closing the circuit, and enabling the computer to startup, use the display and not go into kernal panic from a open circuit short. As far as getting data off of the HD, the local tech claimed my HD was erased and there was nothing viewable on it. I took it home, applied some pressure with my my hand and viola all my data, user account etc like nothing had happened...its sad but I am sitting next to my old computer clamped to the table with some cardboard shims for protection. Guess its a desktop now until I get it fixed!

  • 3 times dead logic board and now you are on your own.

    My G5 is dead for the 3rd time.
    1st time it was fixed at CompUSA. They told me that the logic board was under recall and they fixed it. They told me that they had seen a bunch of these. OK.
    2nd time logic board. they open it at apple and say, yup popped capacitors. I call apple to complain, they say you are covered.
    3rd time logic board, AGAIN. they will fix it this time.... AND YOU WILL ONLY BE COVER FOR 90DAYS AFTER THIS, IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY NOW.
    When you buy a computer that has a know problem and you let them try to correct it, is this how you should be treated? Has any one else been treated like this?
    what should I do?

    Miriam offers sage advice. Contact Apple at the number provided and firmly yet politely state your case.
    You may also want to research your local consumer protection laws. Often manufacturer's are given three tries to fix the same problem then must provide you with another solution in either a refund or a replacement unit.
    On a related note, I have never been impressed with Apple service as provided by CompUSA. Apple will always try to point you to the nearest facility but you do have the option to choose another service provider.
