Logic board issue discussion

Hey everyone, while waiting for answers on my other post, I'm going to start this discussion to see what you guys think of this on going logic board problem. (To see my situation look at my other post.)
I think this logic board problem is very similar to the "Windows Vista" problem. They are rushing to produce so many logic boards that the quality they produce is complete junk. Alot of people are having this problem but why has Apple not yet fixed this issue? I have read alot of posts of getting the board replaced only to find out that the replacement board is also faulty.
Right now I'm just very aggrevated because the closest Apple Store is an hour drive into the city (Melbourne, Australia). I made that trip yesterday and waited as the replaced the Hard Drive and RAM only to find out today that the problem is probably the logic board. I really want to get my MBP working as I am a student and a musician. I thought this was going to be more of a good investment and not a big headache.
Also what is the process to getting the Logic Board replaced? How long does it take? And for people who are out of warranty, how much will it cost?
Luckily, I guess, I bought this Macbook about 2 weeks ago so I am still covered by the warranty but it is a shame that I actually needed the warranty after 2 weeks of the purchase.
I want your opinions! =) I do like Apple but right now I am just really frustrated >=(

Hi Bruce, sorry to hear of your frustrations. First off, Apple doesn't make logic boards. Heck, Apple doesn't make any of the parts under the hood of your computer. I'm surprised that on a two week old computer they didn't just offer you a replacement. Was the computer purchased through Apple or did you buy it 3rd party?
When you say... "alot of people are having this problem." What are you using for your sample size? How many, what proof do you have that there issue is the same as your issue? Is it with the same make/model computer that you have?
A logic board replacement is a pretty straight forward replacement. A good tech can be in and out and have service verification in about an hour (uninterrupted). Typically though the process is a 3-4 (or more) turn around at Apple Stores, simply because they will sometimes need to wait for the part and your machine may not be first in line at the time it is received.
Out of warranty logic board replacements are very costly, definitely the most expensive component to replace in the machine.

  • Is USB part of Logic Board issue?????

I am ignorant about computers, so I just learned this past week that both of the USB ports should have been working all along. I have had this computer for almost 4 years; only one has ever worked and I recently damaged that one. I was told that the 2nd port could not be repaired to work because of the board needing to be replaced. Is this part of the repairs Apple is owning up to?

Hi, Sheila. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No. The iBook Logic Board Extension Program is for display issues only.

  • Graphics card/logic board issues: Macbook Pro Freezing during Apple Hardware Test!

I have a macbook pro that was working fine then the screen started acting funny. It would sometimes "tile" up where you would see the same issue repeated over and over on the screen and then computer would freeze. Sometimes the screen would start to have a strobing look and then freeze. I thought the computer was crashing but once the screen froze but the processor was still running. I knew the computer was still processing because I was streaming a video online and the audio from the video continued to download and play event though the screen was frozen.
I went to the apple store and they said they think it sounds like failure of the hardrive, graphics card, display, logic board. A new hard drive was just put in the computer about 4-6 weeks ago, and if it is the other issues could be $500-$800+ to repair. I tried to use the Apple Hardware test (non-extended test) but it keeps freezes at 2 min 32 secs every time when it starts "testing the main logic board"....
Has anyone seen anything like this and have another way to test what the problem could be? Thanks!

I know you're in denial, but it really does sound like the motherboard or graphics board which is integrated with the motherboard.  Yes, fixing these things will cost almost as much as a new MacBook Pro.  Get a new one, take the HDD out of your old one, and start over again.

  • Logic Board Issue?

Hello. I run an external monitor off my 12" PowerBook G4. A couple of weeks ago after I reconnected the display, it would show the screen but with a green tint. I sent it into Apple and they said they replaced some internal cable after they determined it was a problem with the video-out port (which seems strange because isn't it connected directly to the logic board?) Anyways I got it back yesterday and it worked for about an hour before the external display turned green again. The internal one works fine.
Anyways I was playing Halo today and there were lots of black lines flashing on the screen at times. (been using the game for months and never any issues like it. Also tried reinstalling it but no change) Almost like static. It would happen every 30 seconds or so. I retried the external display today and it work for a second then went green again. Apple told me not to bother sending it in again but to bring it to an Apple store and have them check it out.
So any ideas as to what it could be? The distortion in Halo made me think it might be more then the port. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for your time.

Apple store genius determined it was a bad video adapter.

  • IMac Logic Board Issue...

    Here is a little history:
Bought an iMac G5 1.8GHz in February of 2005. In October of 2005 I had the power supply and logic board replaced. In August of 2006 I had the logic board replaced again. In July of 2007 I had the logic board replaced AGAIN...
I am once again having issues with what I think is a faulty logic board. I had a "Must Restart" grey pop-up yesterday. Did an SMU reset, then restarted the computer. It worked for 24 hours. This morning it did the same thing. I restarted, but it went to a blue screen and stayed there... I did a SMU reset, and a PRAM reset. Then called Applecare and they hinted I should do a disk repair with the install disk... Tried that. The computer won't boot from the disc when pressing C on startup... just goes to Blue Screen after grey apple screen and freezes.
I tried starting up whilst holding the "Option" button. Both the Macintosh HD and OS X Tiger DVD are found, but once again, it won' boot from either. Just to the Blue Screen and that is it.
I am over 3 months from my logic board replacement time frame... besides, I think the last replacement of it should have taken care of it last July, right? I have opened up the computer, and there are 5 leaking capacitors...
I am right in thinking the Logic Board is fried, right?
What would you suggest doing? Trying to get another logic board for free from Apple, even though I am beyond warranty? I DO NOT want to pay 800-900 bucks for sure. Any other tips or suggestions? I figure I could get a SATA/USB2 enclosure for the HD if I get another mac... not to mention I am a pretty good back-upper...
    Thanks!!!

I have a first generation 20" iMac G5; the logic board failed about a year ago and was replaced under the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" program at my local Apple store. It failed again last week; I returned to the Apple store and was advised it would not be covered as it has passed the 3 year mark outlined in the program and was offered a 20% discount on purchasing a new iMac (I did not feel this was a reasonable resolution). I contacted AppleCare via telephone regarding the issue as I felt Apple should support a product with a well documented defect. The "Product Specialist" I spoke to stated "my original logic board had been replaced with an updated one" and "the failure of this current logic board is unrelated to the Extension program failure". He then went on to contradict himself and stated "Apple could not / would not continue to support the logic board failures after the 3 year mark". I was offered no resolution; I am a long time Apple supporter, advocate and evangelist who has advised friends, family and colleagues to purchase Apple products. I am now extremely hesitant to do so after this incident. As this is a recurring and well documented issue with this product, I feel Apple should either replace or offer a replacement iMac at a HIGHLY substantial discounted rate to any customers impacted by this product. Hundreds of posts here and at other forums show there are many unhappy customers.

  • Ibook logic board issue?

I just ran the hardware test on my ibook G4 and it came up with an error code
    2GMC/2/15: built in
Then I ran it again and it came up fine. Any ideas?
    Thansk!

    Hi Matthew,
That is very interesting, I can't say anything except it is possible that Apple might want you to replace your logic board. Anything strange going on with your computer? Any problems? Anything that might have to do with Ethernet, FireWire, USB, or anything like that?

  • Logic Board Issues?

Just got back from Memorial City Mall's Genius Bar. Some old man said my MacBook's logic board is busted and he knows because the MagSafe didn't light up. I plugged in my OEM Charger and it lights up. I Google'd malfunctioning logic board and the results are keyboard and mouse related... I swear that old bag at the Genius Bar around 1:30 PM was on CRACK!!! So does it have any relations to responding to the MagSafe or... I don't think he had it plugged in. All he did has take out the battery, and told me that I fried it when I was replacing the harddrive... It turned on and was fine 3 days ago, and won't boot again since the battery is at 0 mAh. So does everything make sense? I couldn't have fried it, maybe that knockoff MagSafe fried it, but I booted with it... Or is that old man on crack and I am right? The guy didn't do anything except put the MagSafe in the MacBook and not in the outlet, and didn't try an SMC reset or anything.

If it's under warranty, call Apple and send it in for repair. If not, get a second opinion from another store.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch possible display/logic board issue?

Ive had this problem when opening up FaceTime windows or notification center windows. the screenshot is provided (http://imgur.com/1h6fip4). i have run an apple hardware test the normal one and the extended one and it said it has no problems to report. I'm not sure where to go because this behavior is clearly not normal. and if its a display problem it should not register on the screen shot. If any one has any idea what to do or what tests to run, please let me know. if you have any questions regarding the model of my mac, please let me know and i will respond. I honestly do not know whats going on and I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

  • Macbookpro 13" late 2007 logic board issue'

I had this exact same thing happen to me two and a half months ago on an early 2008 MBP. Computer went to sleep during the night, came in the next morning and the sleep light going on and off like normal. I tried to wake up the computer by pressing keys on the keyboard but it wouldn't wake. I held down the power button and the sleep light turned off. I pushed the power button again to turn it on and nothing happened. No screen, no chime, nothing.
    any help

The answer is no for any one who looks at this.

  • Logic Board or Hard Drive Issue?

Recently my PowerBook G4 failed to boot from the internal hard drive. Gray Apple screen, spinning wheel and after a couple of minutes restart is all I get. What happened initially was the computer froze not allowing Safari to quit for restart. I had to manually shut down after all other means did not work (Force Quit, etc.). I have been able to get it to boot from an external Firewire drive running 10.4, but it will not recognize a USB drive, though the USB ports work for a printer and scanner. I was also able to get it to boot from a 10.5 Install DVD that came with my wife's MacBook. Since I bought this PowerBook used, it had no disks included, but did have 10.5 installed. The other thing is the lower RAM slot has not worked from the day I got it. When I run Disk Utility the drive checks out, though there were some Permission repairs. SMART checks verified. I seem to be able to access the internal disk when booted from the external. Reset PMU & PRAM, no difference. Should I try replacing the hard drive or do I have another issue here?

First up, PowerPC-based Macs can't boot up from a USB external drive (per se... there is a workaround and "hack"). Only Intel-based Macs can do that.
Second, since you say it works and boots up when connected to a FireWire external drive, I believe it is a hard drive issue. S.M.A.R.T. status is not ("not") always a reliable indicator from what I've heard. It may say it's verified, but really it's failing. By the same token, it may say failed, but really it's fine.
That is not always the case however. 95% of the time, S.M.A.R.T. status is highly accurate.
If you are so inclined, you can open up your PowerBook, take out the hard drive, and place a new one in there and see what happens. If it works, you're in business. And you only spent a $100 or less on a new drive (which you might end up needing anyway if your current drive is indeed broken).
(If your drive isn't broken, then you have a backup drive ).
If the new drive installed doesn't work, then it is a logic board issue or something else. But since you say it works fine and boots up from a Leopard install DVD, I think it may just be the hard drive. And a new logic board usually starts at $300 so think about that as well. (You could get a new used one for a bit more and sell that one for parts).

  • Is a bad logic board due to a bad power supply?

    Computer specs:
    iMac G5 20", 2.0 ghz, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB hard drive
Back in October of 2008 my iMac G5 Power PC shutdown intermittently and then when I went to go to start it back up, it booted to the blue screen and hanged there forever. So, I did a hard shutdown and then waited and then booted again and it still hanged at the blue screen. I tried booting in Safe Mode, and that worked, so I had a chance to backup everything that I needed to. Then, I took the computer to my local Apple Store to speak to a "genius". They could not diagnose my computer while I was there, so they needed to take it overnight and let me know over the phone what the issue was. The next day they called to tell me that it was a Logic Board issue and that it would cost $900 to fix it. I obviously was blown away at the cost for the problem, and I could not afford that charge so I seeked out other options. I found a shop in my neighborhood that offered me a used 1.8 ghz logic board for half of what Apple was quoting me, so I went with it. Then, 9 months later (which brings us to present) my iMac completely shutdown on its own and would not start up. I ran it through some tests (LED lights on the interior) and confirmed that it was a Logic Board issue again. So, I took it back to the shop in my neighborhood and they told me that the warranty for the part they replaced had expired. So, I called Apple Customer Relations to talk to them about the issue. They confirmed, using my serial number, that I could get my issues fixed for free. They then told me about the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Power Supply Issues" which was news to me. This Program ended in December of 08, meaning I would have qualified in October of 08... the time I initially brought in my computer. So, I brought my computer to the Apple Store to drop it off for repairs, and when going over the history of the machine they confirmed that because there was a used 1.8 ghz part in my machine installed from a non-authorized Apple place that they COULD NOT fix my issues now.
    My question is:
Back in October of 2008 when I brought in my computer to the Apple Store and they diagnosed it with a bad Logic Board, could that have been because of a bad power supply? If that was the case, does a bad power supply cause a Logic Board to go bad?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The short answer is no, but it's actually more complicated than that. The original iMac G5 17 and 20 inch models were plagued by two problems: defective capacitors which affected the logic board, and an unrelated set of defective capacitors which affected the power supply. Rarely were both conditions present at the same time, but Apple decided—when they issued the repair extension authorization—that replacement of both components was a more cost effective approach. By far, the most common of the two problems involved the logic boards.
The REA covered machines for a period of three years from first sale, and ended in December of last year. Yours likely would not have been covered due to the date of sale provision. On a case by case basis, AppleCare representatives did allow coverage for machines beyond the three year limitation, but not past the end of last year.
It's not likely that you have both a defective logic board and power supply, though you may. The combination of these issues is actually found most frequently in the iMac G5 ALS models, none of which were covered by a repair extension authorization.
Your issue is a difficult one, as Apple authorized dealers and service providers have every right—and, actually, a responsibility under their annual agreements—to reject warranty, AppleCare or REA coverage for parts or labor when compatible but not similar logic boards have been placed in your machine. This is because they must exchange these parts for the part they are requesting from Apple on a like-for-like basis, and that part must be associated with your machine serial number. In trying to resolve your issue, the shop in your neighborhood actually created an additional issue for you which would only be triggered in the event of component failure. I have no idea what period of coverage they typically offer, but Apple provides for 90 days or the balance of any warranty or AppleCare extension in place at the time of the repair, whichever is greater.
Your logic board can be refurbished for $ 189.00 if it in fact exhibits the capacitor issue. That process is covered by a one-year warranty. If you are interested in exploring that option, send a message to the electronic mail address in my Public Profile and I will reply with additional information. To help determine additional information concerning your machine, please include the machine serial number if you elect to do write for more information.

  • Random freezing. Logic board failure, or something I can replace?

I managed to get hold of a battered 12" 876 Powerbook. The screen was smashed, but I managed to replace it with one off ebay. All worked fine for a few minutes until it froze. I reformatted and the usual stuff but random freezes kept happening. Sometimes it would not start at all, othertimes halfway through the startup process, sometimes 3 hours later. It turned out to be when I moved the laptop so I assumed something was lose...
After having the whole thing apart(!) and putting it back together, twice, it still freezes when I move it!
I have worked out that if I put down pressure onto the trackpad corner of the DVD-R drive it will start perfectly until I release the pressure. It is not related to the cable for the DVD drive as it will start regardless of whether it is connected or not. I cant see a lose connection between the DC board and the logic board, and I cant see any obviously lose components.
Is there anything else it can be?! Its annoying the **** out of me as it must be something simple! If its definately a logic board problem then I may try and get one off ebay, depending on the cost. I just don't want to spend more money to have the same thing happen again!
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like you might be having a logic board issue. There is a fix suggested in the G3 iBook Dual Forum, but I don't know if it will work on your computer. You will find it in this thread.
To test whether it is the logic board, boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer and run the tests. If nothing shows, run it again, or run it in a loop.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
    Good luck.

  • 13 Inch Macbook Pro Logic Board Failure

I've my 13 inch macbook pro (mid 2010) working fine till last week and all of a sudden it gone off while i'am working with it.
When i tried it it switch it on, it is not coming up back. No response at all, when i press the power button even the brething light is not coming up.
No issue with the battery as it is fully charged and even the MagSafe is connected.
I gave it to Apple authorised service center for repair, they initially asked 1000+ buck (INR) for checking it and after checking it i got a response that it is a logic board issue no power is being send to Logic board and it needs an expensive replacement of Rs 33,600.
Not sure why this logic board can't be repaired rather than an expensive replacement..??? Are they doing service or only replacements?
Bought it for 80k and spending another 35k in 3 years is the most annoying thing   - a brand new windows laptop costs 35k
    Thanks,
    Subbu

Apple or an AASP do not "service" logic boards...everything is soldered in place...they replace them.

  • Power supply vs. logic board?  turns off in sleep mode.

My imac g5 (2004 - 1st generation?) is either turning completely off or going into some un-wake-up-able mode after it's put to sleep. (I have to switch off/on the power strip and turn the computer on all over again.) And sometimes if it's sleeping (power light pulsing on front) it may or may not wake from sleep by pushing the power button. Often touching a key in that circumstance will cause it to crash, so I've quit using that altogether as a method of waking it up. I've reset the SMU a number of times throughout the past few months and it has not cleared up this problem.
Last night after I put it to sleep it switched in to the un-wake-up-able mode. I could still hear something running (not a fan, just an electrical hum) where it seems like it's crashed and can't shut itself off. I had to turn off the power and try to turn the computer back on. It wouldn't respond the first couple times. Then the power light glowed for a while but it still didn't turn on completely. After a few more minutes I tried again. Maybe I held the power button for too long, but I heard a long single beep, the fans whirred, and then everything started up as usual.
I've read a number of threads seemingly related to these issues, but am now not clear about whether this is a power supply issue or a logic board issue. I have yet to open the back and check for bulging capacitors. Just thought I'd ask here first.

I am having a very close issue too (posted also in a more recent thread about power button not functioning). My old iMac G5 20 inches got a power supply that went bad two years ago. I had it replaced and all went fine until two weeks ago.
My wife was using it, while I was away: machine shut down with a 'pop!' sound.
She tried to start it up again, but after pressing the button a couple of times - the last one longer - she had a long strong peep. The machine went on for a while and then off again. Scared, she left it off.
After checking, no reported issue seems to fit to the problems shown: power supply is working; logic board too. The machine is working fine, but on sleep, it dies out. While doing tasks, at undetermined times, it shuts down with a 'pop!'. Sometimes you can restart it immediately. Sometimes you can't and have to wait one or more hours. No evidently bad caps on board, led check returns 1 (no 2 flashing or attempting to turn on) with dead computer, otherwise all working fine. Hardware test also passed. Console messages have nothing relevant or clearly understandable to offer.
Still can't figure out a solution. Many user are pretty fast in suggesting to bringing the machine to Apple. Unfortunately not all around the world we have/need cars. And getting the 20 kg of iMac by feet/metro to the shop it ain't such a nice walk. When I fried the power supply, there was no sufficiently large box on sale to pack the computer and have it send to the shop. I had to wait for the technician - on a convenient day - do drop by and take it (and he knew he was going to repair it)!
Will post, if I have further developments.

  • Kernel panic.. with new logic board

    Hi,
So I recently replaced my logic board after trying EVERYTHING to fix a somewhat frequently occuring kernel panic. Now however.. it has happened again.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I honestly feel like I've tried everything. Could it be bad RAM? I've changed the hard drive, done a fresh OS X install (perhaps its something in my settings from migrating my old stuff back over?), new logic board.. reset PRAM, every suggestion I could find.
Here is the old discussion before I changed the logic board. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3902490
